Claims he wants to be treated as if he were an "African-American:"

Denying that he was drunk and or that he asked the Capitol Police for preferential treatment, Kennedy, a Rhode Island congressman, said he’s prepared “in terms of bookings, in terms of mug shots, fingerprints, whatever they might have me do.”

“It’s what anyone else would have done to them if they were an African-American in Anacostia,” Kennedy said in a shaky voice, referring to the mostly minority neighborhood in southeastern Washington.

Notice he didn't say he wanted to be treated as if "he were not a Kennedy." Had he said that, he might actually have been arrested, fingerprinted, and prosecuted.

But he doesn't want those things to happen, of course.

So he asks to be treated as if he were black. Thus preventing him from being treated as a normal, non-Kennedy sort of drunk driver, because if he is now arrested and prosecuted, he can whip up black support in his favor by saying, "See? This is how they treat black people."

As if white people are allowed to almost hit police cars and then crash into barriers without being hassled by The Man.

So, under the guise of asking for equal treatment, he's actually demanded privileged treatment.

Good piece about what is known, and not known, about the alleged "murders in cold blood."

I didn't know this-- the media keeps using quotes from two American servicemen about the killings, but neither of whom was there at the time. One had been evacuated due to being wounded in the IED attack before the engagement; the other was just around later to move bodies. While both speculate as to the attack, neither saw anything. And yet the media tends to report their words as if they're first-hand accounts.

Haditha is an insurgent stronghold. That doesn't make it a free-fire zone. But it should make claims coming from the locals suspect until backed by physical evidence or dispassionate witness reports.

There's physical evidence that will tend to prove this one way or another. Were the women and children -- presumably unarmed -- shot at close range? Or from far range? The first suggests a deliberate disregard for civilian casualties, the latter suggests collateral damage during a firefight. The latter doesn't get the accused off the hook -- they may still have responded disproportionately and in violation with rules of engagement, but it knocks down the idea that they stormed the house murdering unarmed women and children in cold blood.

CSI, not ABCNBCNNCBS, will decide this.

Correction! The Navy corpsman is implicated in an incident at Hamdaniya, where he and seven Marines are accused of grabbing an Iraqi from his home, shooting him, and placing a weapon on him. It's not Haditha. I guess I wasn't following this very closely, because I thought the seven-Marines-and-one-Navy-corpsman were implicated in Haditha.

Nope. Hamdaniya. Which seems a far less serious case. And yet-- shackling and solitary confinement.
