— Pixy Misa Today's outage is proudly brought to you by Adaptec - "The number one name in overpriced RAID controllers with crappy firmware" - and Western Digital - "Our drives are so tough they eat other disk drives! Also, your data."
This is to replace the insane drive and wipe and rebuild the corrupted RAID-5 volume. Should be about 15 minutes. Once it's done, everything should be good - we have a RAID-5 array and a RAID-1 array and an enterprise SSD for the databases. What could possibly go wrong?
...
No, thanks, I don't want a list.
Update: All done, though as usual fifteen minutes became half an hour. The RAID-5 array is rebuilding now, and will be for several hours (it's 4TB) but we're safe and happy on the RAID-1 array.

— Gabriel Malor Of those who have decided, most say Judge Sotomayor should not be confirmed, according to a Rasmussen Poll conducted Tuesday night and Wednesday:

The public is watching and no one is buying it as she pretends she didn't actually mean what she's been saying for twenty years. Word of her seriously deficient decisions in (among other cases) Ricci, Didden, and Maloney is out.
By contrast, on the last day of Justice Alito's confirmation hearings:

Notice, that many more people have decided about Sotomayor--and earlier--than did about Alito. Part of that is because there was much less reason to; there was no hint in any of his opinions, or speeches, or prior employment that he harbored decades-old animus toward certain groups of people. To that extent, he could be safely ignored by folks not quite as plugged in to politics as, for example, you, dear readers. He wasn't "dangerous" and so there wasn't as much of a pressing need to decide whether or not you liked him.
I can't find data on Chief Justice Roberts for the end of his confirmation hearings, but on the first day of hearings 39% believed he should be confirmed, 26% said he should not, with the rest not sure (exactly the same numbers as Alito). Again, nothing about the Chief Justice set off alarm bells relating to a core American legal principle: you do not prejudge people based on their race or gender.
[A] great many Americans have figured out that Sonia Sotomayor is not committed to the principle that people of all races and ethnic backgrounds [and genders, don't forget! -- GM] should be treated equally. It's almost enough to restore one's faith in the Republic.
Almost. Almost. She's still going to be confirmed, after all.

Did I Say Support? I Meant 50-42 Disapproval
— Ace This really doesn't matter to them.
The left voted them in and they're only accountable to the liberals... and another 10-15% of the liberal-leaning public. They figure the math on this is that our guys need to be appeased -- they are expecting us to do this, and we need to do it, whether it bankrupts the country or not. The remaining 10-15% we can pick up later or just hope they stick with us.
And once again we have to hurry; time will not permit us to consider this carefully.
Everyone’s a bit jaded about The One’s modus operandi by now but it’s worth stepping back to drink this in. We’re talking here about his signature policy issue, the most significant domestic legislation that Congress has considered in decades, and rather than take his time and be meticulous about it, Obama’s trying to ram it through as quickly as he can for reasons of either ego or pure political expediency. That “pass something, anything!” approach could be understood (if not forgiven) in the case of the stimulus recovery “stabilization” bill, since the whole point was to start pushing money out the door as quickly as possible — which didn’t happen, natch. But what’s the excuse this time? What pressing policy consideration demands that this turd be pinched off before August instead of letting Congress take its time? Any lefties want to help me out?
I can help you out, Allah. The trendlines for rising medical costs are projected to bankrupt the Medicaid system in around 2032 or something like that.
Obviously we have to address that now, without pause for deliberation, even though the director of the CBO says these "fixes" will only increase federal spending in this area, not reduce it.
And, oh, while we're "fixing" that, might as well spend some more money we don't have creating federal health insurance for 10 or 20 million more people.
The Obama two-step. Charles Krauthammer complained of this earlier. He announces a "crisis" -- such as the recession -- and then proposes that we pass a raft of legislation which in fact has nothing at all to do with addressing that crisis. We're in a recession? Oh, you know what we need to do immediately? Pass cap and trade and universal health care.
Um-- what have the latter to do with the former?
Now he's warning of us of a coming insolvency in Medicaid -- coming around 2032, remember -- and rather than actually proposing ways to limit Medicaid spending, tells us we need to increase federal spending on health care to more people.
And that, somehow, is going to reduce federal spending on health-care and forestall that coming insolvency.
As a wise man diagnosable retard once said, "We have to spend money to avoid bankruptcy."
Meanwhile the Stimulus Recovery Stabilization of the Downturn Bill is working precisely as predicted so we have every reason to trust these geniuses.
Thanks to AHFF Geoff again.

Can't believe it was only 40 years ago. But even more remarkable (to me anyway), it was a mere 66 years from Kitty Hawk to the moon.
Also, don't jack with Buzz Aldrin (old but still sooo good), below the fold.
Also also: the launch. more...

— Open Blog TonightÂ’s a little truncated since the cable modem has decided to only work 50% of the time now. I tried to reason with it earlier, but its high-impact encounter with a wall didnÂ’t seem to provide much of an attitude adjustment. Meanwhile, hereÂ’s a couple of tales from ABC News (Australia) which for some reason always has on tap odd stories from Germany:
Item #1: First up is a story titled Gnome Probed Over Nazi Salute. Probing gnomes?
”German prosecutors have launched an enquiry into whether a garden gnome with its right arm raised in a Hitler salute in a Nuremberg art gallery is against the law. "The investigation is ongoing and people are being interviewed," Wolfgang Traeg, a spokesman for the public prosecutors office in the southern city, told AFP.”
Unknown who brought the complaint against the gnome. Calls to PricelineÂ’s corporate HQ have so far gone unreturned.
Item #2: HereÂ’s a handy little maintenance tip for you: Man Fixing Airbed Blows Up Apartment.
”A German man has blown up his apartment while trying to fix his leaky air mattress, his city's fire brigade said. The man, 45, from Duesseldorf in Germany's west, used tyre-repair solvent to plug a hole in his airbed and left it overnight. It blew up when he went to inflate it the next day. "A spark from the electric air pump ignited it," a fire brigade spokesman said.”
Caused quite a bit of damage it did. IÂ’m including this as a PSA since most readers of AoSHQ are avid participants of the inflatable culture and quite proud of your collections. The best advice then is to stick with that old standby for temporary repairs (duct tape) until you can get your inflatable item to a qualified repair shop for a permanent fix.

— Ace This foreign policy crisis brought to you by the Obama Administration, thanks to a grant from the Soros Foundation.
A top aide to Manuel Zelaya says the ousted president will set up government headquarters inside Honduras, from which he will lead the "final battle" against coup leaders.Patricia Rodas, foreign minister of Zelaya's toppled government, says Zelaya is en route to Honduras but she did not provide details as to where he plans to set up the alternative seat of government. Zelaya himself will announce it when he deems appropriate.
Rodas spoke Thursday after arriving in the Bolivian capital of La Paz aboard the plane of leftist Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez. Chavez is an ally of both Chavez and left-leaning Bolivian President Evo Morales.
THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE.
Check back soon for further information. AP's earlier story is below.
TEGUCIGALPA, Honduras (AP) — A top aide of ousted Honduran President Manuel Zelaya said he was heading back to the country Thursday, while thousands of his supporters blocked roads to demand his return to power.
Note the updated format; we've gone from "Zelaya on his way back" to "Zelaya to lead 'final battle'" in just a few hours. Partly thanks to Obama's cheerleading.
I think maybe Obama should have heeded his own counsel and refrained from "meddling" in the first place.
Question:
Will US troops be deployed to "advise" in the situation?
Before you say "No," remember, Bill Clinton was on the more-pacifist side of things, too, but whenever the left wing blessed an intervention, he was able to put aside his skepticism about American force. See Haiti; see Mogadishu.
I wouldn't think Obama would be so reckless as to do this -- but he keeps proving me wrong at every turn.
AHFF Geoff, again.

— Ace We already know he didn't mean what he meant when he claimed (and still does claim on his website) that no one -- not a single family in America -- will pay more in taxes (note: "income tax" not specified; taxes, period) than they did in the 90s.
We already know that's false, as he's considering a surtax on the rich that will extract up to 5.4% more from them than they paid in the 90s.
We also all know he's going to raise taxes on the middle class. The MSM knows this as well. It's a wonderment to me they're so quiet about it.
So, now being told that the stimulus was never intended to stimulate, what good is Obama's word regarding his magical cost-decreasing reforms?
How Will the Media Play This Ludicrous Spin? So I asked the cobloggers in email, so I'll ask you guys.
It's obviously embarrassing as hell for Obama to claim this. Note he himself did not claim it; he had Gibbsy do it without cameras rolling -- the spin is so embarrassing that, while they want the media pushing it, they don't want to be tied to it themselves. They definitely don't want Gibbs offering up that soundbite, do they?
It's just as embarrassing for Obama's water-carriers in the media to repeat it.
But what can they do? It is now their boyfriend's official party line. Do they choke on it or down it gamely?
My own prediction is this: They repeat it. Snarky guys like Anderson Cooper give it a little eyeroll, and acknowledge the obvious: This is kinda bad spin.
Then, having acknowledged the obvious, they go on to say: But, as bad as this sounds, when you think about it, it's pretty much true.
See, before you go on to spin so blatantly for Obama you have to first acknowledge you're being spun blatantly by Obama. Spin can only go so far. You have to at least wink in the direction of reality before spinning further into fancy.
So that's my prediction. And yours?
Quote Unquote:
"Then you get the argument, well this is not a stimulus bill, it's a spending bill. What do you think a stimulus is? It’s spending — that's the whole point! No, seriously. That's the point!”-- Barack Hussein Obama on the first non-stimulus stimulus bill

At 2:00 in. I guess this isn't a surprise.
It's also not a surprise that Barney Frank uses the opportunity to make a sexual joke. Which is creepy coming from this big fat gay-John satyr.
MattM. sent it to me to note two other things: First of all Jon Stewart, who had so bravely embarrassed Jim Cramer for his alleged role in causing the political catastrophe, says not a word to Barney Frank about his own role -- his repeated assertion that there was no insolvency risk in Fannie and Freddie and that he wanted to "roll the dice" a little in the direction of extending themselves further.
Also: In part 2, Frank asserts the reason the Stimulus -- oh, wait, Recovery, or is it Stabilization? --bill isn't working is that mean Republican "moderates" insisted on taking out $40 billion of the trillion-dollar bill.
So... the other $960 billion was meaningless. Only that last marginal $40 billion counted.
So why didn't we just spend the $40 billion?
Anyway, here's Frank, noting the White House Message of the Day.
What a shock that a man who never did anything in his life except exist on the fringes of the leftist academic community thinks that cutesy-poo semantic substitutions are the cure for real-world problems.
