Irish D-Day -- oddly enough, the same as Pearl Harbor day here in the US: December 7.

How bad is the shipping glut? Ships have to sail slower than 19th-century clipper-ships just to stay busy. Overcapacity in shipping means lower demand for the finished goods overall. This is also a prime reason why export-driven economies (China, Germany) are in for a pretty dramatic adjustment soon. They've been counting on an economic recovery in America and Europe to soak up all that excess production, but it looks like things are going to stay weak for at least another six months to a year. more...

FYI, today oral argument will take place at the Ninth Circuit in the expedited appeal of the Arizona immigration law, SB1070. The argument starts at NOON Eastern. (Actually, it starts at 9am Pacifica in San Francisco, but I'm on the east coast now.)

Another interesting item of background: Judge Carlos Bea, one of the panel judges, was as a college student ordered deported and had to appeal to get that ruling overturned. That's also the link you want to click if you're interested in projections of how this particular panel will rule.

General background information on today's hearing is here. It will be double-length, that is, one hour long because of the complicated and contentious nature of the case.
