Although he's firm about not leaving the party, he sure talks up the party leaving him:

If Obamacare passes, Stupak says, it could signal the end of any meaningful role for pro-life Democrats within their own party. “It would be very, very hard for someone who is a right-to-life Democrat to run for office,” he says. “I won’t leave the party. I’m more comfortable here and still believe in a role within it for the right-to-life cause, but this bill will make being a pro-life Democrat much more difficult. They don’t even want to debate this issue. We’ll probably have to wait until the Republicans take back the majority to fix this.”

A bill so popular (as Howell Raines assures us) they can't even vote for it. But have to "deem" it voted for.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi told her members Friday to brace themselves for a climatic health care vote as early as next week, warning them to clear their schedules for next weekend and promising to stay in session until the landmark vote, people present said afterwards.

President Barack Obama has postponed an overseas trip until March 21 presumably so he can be in Washington for the climactic vote. Asked about the scheduling change, Speaker Nancy Pelosi said, "I am delighted the president will be here for the passage of the bill. It is going to be historic."

In addition, it looks like House Democrats won't have to vote directly on a Senate bill they really don't like. The speaker hasn't made a final decision, but she told her rank-and-file during the meeting that the plan now is to craft a rule that would "deem" the Senate bill passed once they approve the package of fixes.

That means they would vote on the rule and the so-called reconciliation package, which would make changes to the Senate bill and only requires 51 votes to pass in the Upper Chamber. In addition, the package of changes would also include a student lending bill that was paired with health care through the reconciliation process, leaders told their members on Friday.

All of this could change if the speaker faces major resistance from her rank-and-file, but it would mean Democrats won't be forced to cast a vote specifically in favor of the Senate bill, which included a series of controversial deals. During the meeting, party leaders reassured lawmakers that two of the most controversial deals -- the so-called Cornhusker Kickback and more Medicare Advantage money for Florida -- would be stripped out. But it appeared that additional Medicaid money for Louisiana and a $100 million hospital grant program requested by Sen. Chris Dodd (D-Conn.) will both stay in the final bill.

I have a different point. Liberals are forever congratulating themselves on how nuanced and complex their thinking is. Every time they fail in the marketplace of ideas, they excuse their failure by noting that they are engaging in lofty, arcane reasoning, and that their dreaded foes only won the debate because they trafficked in thuggishly simpleminded sloganeering.

Always.

Fail at talk radio? Ah well, that is easily explained: our arguments are so gosh-darn elevated and eldritch they fly over the heads of the lumpenproletariat.

This has always been a pretty stupid claim. The liberal argument is easily grasped by children, because it rarely includes the ideas of costs or tradeoffs. That's why children and teenagers tend to be liberal in their thinking. Do you want to feed the hungry? Clothe the naked? Heal the sick? Boy do I!!! These are very simplistic propositions, and furthermore come from a place of pure emotion -- empathy. Their is little intellectual thrust behind these impulses. And certainly there is none of the higher-order mathematical-type thinking involved in cost-benefit analysis ad risk management and moral hazard and unintended consequences and the free-rider problem and so on.

But their claims of complex, nuanced intellectual appeals are most spectactularly self-refuted when they trot out -- as they are wont to do -- children to repeat the exact same arguments they make. Children. Look, children are wonderful and all, but if you're rating their intellects, they're basically retards. You know, we measure retardation by noting what age intellectual development is arrested at; an 11-year-old is just lovely and pure and all of that, but if we're speaking of an adult with an 11-year-old's mental facilities, we're talking about a retard.

So these hyperintellectual liberals, whose primary intellectual limitation consists (in their own telling) of not being able to tame their wide-ranging brilliance enough to communicate effectively with their mental inferiors, find that 11-year-olds (retards, in adult terms) are able to make all the same highly nuanced and recursive arguments they do, and more effectively, too.

So: Democratic arguments are so complicated and nuanced that retards can comprehend and regurgitate them on command.

Or, I guess they might explain: Hey, we're too damn brilliant to speak down the level of 90% of the public so look, we've got these undersized retards to do it for us. Set a retard to catch a retard.

Whatever. 90% of the time I hear liberals are so scary-smart they fail only because I am too fucking stupid to comprehend what they're telling me and then 10% of the time they have a kid take a break from learning shapes and colors to parrot their arguments to me.
