Harry Reid... Splitting Atoms-- With His Mind. Now it's not such wonderful news.

House Majority Leader Harry Reid returned to the Senate floor, saying his earlier remarks that "Today is a big day in America. Only 36,000 people lost their jobs today, which is really good," were "mischaracterized by those seeking to score political points" and adding that the lost 36,000 jobs is "devastating news."

I just sent some "really good" news to Harry Reid: You will die alone and afraid and cold.

He replied, "Hey, thanks!"

One less yes vote for ObamaReidPelosi care!

Surely you remember our friend Rep. Eric Massa. I didn't think you can get away with the whole, 'health problems and sexual harassment' thing with a simple retirement in 10 months.

The district he represents in NY is trending Republican but it's likely this whole health care thing will be over one way or another by the time a replacement is seated. So, this is one less yes vote but it also lowers the number necessary to pass the bill. Does that even out in the wash or just lowers the number of 'no' votes Pelosi needs to flip to 'yes'?

Right... [ace] But it's also one gone from the possible no-to-yes list.

In a statement released Friday, Massa directly addressed the ethics issue for the first time, acknowledging that he used language that might have made staffers uncomfortable. But he did not specifically address any specific sexual harassment allegations.

“I own this reality. There is no doubt in my mind that I did in fact, use language in the privacy of my own home and in my inner office that, after 24 years in the Navy, might make a Chief Petty Officer feel uncomfortable,” Massa said. “In fact, there is no doubt that this Ethics issue is my fault and mine alone. But in the incredibly toxic atmosphere that is Washington D.C., with the destruction of our elected leaders having become a blood sport, especially in talk radio and on the internet, there is also no doubt that an Ethics investigation would tear my family and my staff apart.”

That sounds like a little more than some tough language. There are a lot of politicians and high power executives who yell and even degrade subordinates. That usually doesn't fall into the category of tearing one's family apart.

I have to stress, this guy is the School Board President. One would expect him, then, to have a minimum level of education. And a minimum level of familiarity with the English language. (He's native-born, I think, so he can't claim English-as-a-Second-Language as a reason for his lack of erudition.)

Did I mention he's the School Board President? And fighting the changes sought by an outside emergency manager?

We're in the very best of hands, as Instapundit says. Here are some choice emails from Otis Mathis, Detroit School Board President, explaining why he should continue on with sole control over kids' education:

"Do DPS control the Foundation or outside group? If an outside group control the foundation, then what is DPS Board row with selection of is director? Our we mixing DPS and None DPS row's, and who is the watch dog?"

Do DPS control? Do they ever!!!

"If you saw Sunday's Free Press that shown Robert Bobb the emergency financial manager for Detroit Public Schools, move Mark Twain to Boynton which have three times the number seats then students and was one of the reason's he gave for closing school to many empty seats."

We has a lot of reason's kids does not read well.

The emergency manager ended the policy of social promotion. You can see the effects of that policy in the emails written by the school board president. He is, obviously, a near-illiterate.

One can give McCain points for keeping a consistent stance.

But, at the time, McCain's conservative critics noted that Democrats in the Gang of 14 would never honor a similarly consistent stance. McCain, Graham, Snowe, Specter, Voinovich and the others were all being used by the Democrats to protect their own privileges in the minority, we said, but we would never see the reciprocal protection of Republican minority rights that McCain promised.

He's finding out now that we were right.

“Back a few years ago when the Republican side was in the majority and there was a movement toward the ‘nuclear option’ … I stood up as a member of the majority and said we should not erode the 60-vote majority rule that has prevailed here in the Senate for many years,” McCain said Thursday evening.

McCain noted that he took heat from fellow Republicans for standing up for their rights in the minority.

“That was not greeted on this side of the aisle, frankly, with approval by a lot, but what we did then was preserve the Senate,” he said.

The Gang of 14 enraged conservative activists, many of whom still view McCain and Graham with suspicion.

And rightly so, if Democrats, as we suspect, wind up playing McCain for a chump.

Keeping Hope Hostage: Pelosi thinks she has a way to reassure wavering Democrats about a possible betrayal by the Senate, in which the Senate doesn't do anything through reconciliation and instead just forwards the now-passed bill to Obama for his signature.

Her idea? The House can vote in favor of the Senate bill, but they will not actually send it up for the President's signature until the Senate makes changes the House wants through reconciliation.

This, however, just changes which party can screw you -- can Bart Stupak trust that Nancy Pelosi won't send the bill up to be signed into law unless the Senate adds in the Stupak abortion language? That makes me laugh, ha-ha.

And, for that matter, lefties can't trust the power-mad Pelosi to hold out for their precious leftwing changes. Pelosi just wants a win.

That said, it could be the fig-leaf these idiots in the House need to vote America into ruin.

Actually, Rasmussen has both Tarkanian and Lowden beating Reid by similar margins:

The latest Rasmussen Reports telephone survey of likely voters in the state finds Sue Lowden, ex-chairman of the Nevada Republican Party, with a 51% to 38% lead on Reid. Seven percent (7%) prefer some other candidate, but just three percent (3%) are undecided.

Businessman Danny Tarkanian posts a similar 50% to 37% lead over the embattled Democratic leader. Nine percent (9%) opt for another candidate, and four percent (4%) are undecided.

...but I'm in Lowden's camp, partly because she was pretty impressive in a phone interview with bloggers. She had an interesting and crafty line of attack on Harry Reid: Not only is he spending the nation into ruin, but this Majority Leader can't even bring home the bacon for Nevada. I forget the figures she tossed out, but she noted that Nevada was something like 37th in the 50 states in terms of net cash back from Washington (taxes paid in minus benefits paid back). Seemed a pretty good way to neutralize Harry Reid's claims of bringing so much money into the state.

But the Tea Party (?) candidate threatens to keep Reid in office:

A poll from just earlier this week shows Lowden ahead of Tarkanian 47% to 29%, with both defeating Reid, but the twist in the November election could be the Tea Party candidate, Jon Ashjian. A Nevada businessman, Ashjian stands to bleed away as much as 11% of GOP votes. With the Tea Party candidate included in the latest polls, the conservative vote splits. Lowden leads Reid 42% to 37% with Ashjian garner 9% of the vote, and with Tarkanian as the candidate, ReidÂ’s numbers get even better with him only trailing by one and Ashjian pulling 11% in a November match-up.

These numbers, and the strange beginnings of his campaign, are leading some in Nevada think that Ashjian is a part of a Democrat effort to help Reid win reelection by syphoning away Republican votes. The Wall Street Journal reported earlier this week that the Tea Party of Nevada’s secretary is Barry Levinson, a registered Democrat and attorney, who is orchestrating Ashjian’s campaign. The Tea Party of Nevada has only been in existence since January and has many in the GOP suspicious, prompting a response from Ashjian. “I am not for Harry Reid, I have never been supportive of Harry Reid. My candidacy is real, The Tea Party is real, and we are not going away.”

Maybe he is for real, but his backers might have recruited him to split the conservative vote. Lowden, though, isn't conceding Tea Party nation:

She has embraced the Tea Party efforts in the Silver State, even loaning 30 phone lines in her office to Tea Party volunteers during the tight race for the Senate in Massachusetts, so they could make get out the vote calls for Republican Scott Brown. Lowden also says that she has been a regular participant in tea parties herself. She reiterated that sheÂ’s a strong proponent of those who didnÂ’t feel like they had a voice in politics until the Tea Party movement began last year.

The non-binding measure passed despite objections from the Obama administration, which had warned the house foreign affairs committee it would harm relations with Turkey – a Nato ally with about 1,700 troops in Afghanistan – and could imperil fragile reconciliation talks between Turkey and Armenia...

As I wrote just after the I AM DR. AMY BISHOP rampage, I dislike the practice of associating killers and crazy people with either the Left or the Right. I do not believe that Amy Bishop's far Left views caused her crazy or compelled her to commit her crimes. I do not believe that the communist ramblings of Joe Stack led him inexorably to fly a plane into a building.

Nor do I believe that Trutherism and anti-Bush hysteria led John Patrick Bedell to attack the Pentagon today. Patterico did the leg-work there, so click over and see for yourself. I note his stupid beliefs only because idiots among the sinestrosphere will no doubt shamelessly attempt to portray Bedell as a Tea Partier.

In other words, it's important to know this only because our vacuous opponents will not hesitate to slime us by implying a Tea Party or Republican connection that does not exist.

Oh, and at least Bedell had the decency to die following his idiotic attack.

Teabagger Terrorist? [ace] The media is of course pushing the "Teabagger" angle here. Whether he can be determined as having attended a Tea Party rally or not, his politics were stone-cold crank and conspiracy-theorist -- and decidedly anti-Bush.

That doesn't make him a left-winger, either. But it puts him in the Alex Jones/Twoofer camp, whatever that is.
