The Hiroshima Dome That Survived The Bomb

Originally the Hiroshima Trade Promotion Hall it was only 150 meters from the hypo-center yet it mostly survived due to its sturdy construction. Some people in building basements only 100 to 200 meters from the epicenter also survived the blast though the buildings were destroyed. Today you can still visit the dome and epicenter as part of the Hiroshima Peace Museum.

I noticed this morning that conservatism as defined by the leftist media tools was represented by David Brooks and Kathleen Parker on Meet the Press today. Looking for the video if someone wants to put me some. Brooks' major unsupported assertion is that the college educated class is cool with government, but those who barely finished high school are deeply suspicious of government.

He probably means "and those with a degree from East Texas State" are like high school dopes.

Ok, that's kinda true. Still.

This has to be one of the most hapless criminals ever. I count at least 3 major falls any of which should have stunned him and convinced him this was a bad idea. I would say that he had a really bad robbery plan but that's probably giving him more credit than he deserves.

Everyone in the Media Filing Center expected Ron Paul to win the straw poll — and he almost did. Despite bringing a reported 900 delegates to the Southern Republican Leadership Conference, Paul got 438 votes, while Mitt Romney edged him by a single vote, with 439.

Sarah Palin came in third, tied with Newt Gingrich with 18% each. Interestingly, Palin and Gingrich topped the list of second choice selections as well. No one else even came close; Mike Huckabee followed with 4% of the vote. Tim Pawlenty and Mike Pence got 3% each, Rick Santorum got 2%, and Gary Johnson got 1%. After the first and second place finishes, vote totals were not provided.

Ed notes in an update that Certain Fuckin' Doomabee even spent campaign funds (he's still running) at the conference and came up crushingly short.

Romney also managed to beat Herr Doktor on his home turf. Unlike Paul, Romney did not speak at the convention.

President Obama's outreach to the Muslim world is paying off...NOT.

Yemen says it will not hunt down a radical US-born cleric who has reportedly been added to the CIA's list of targets to be killed or captured.

Yemen's foreign minister says the U.S. has not handed over evidence to support allegations Anwar al-Awlaki is recruiting for al-Qaida's offshoot in the impoverished country on the southern edge of the Arabian Peninsula.

Al-Awlaki's sermons were attended by at least three of the 9/11 bombers, first in San Diego and then when he moved to Virginia. Another of his followers and pen-pals was Fort Hood shooter Nidal Malik Hasan, whom he praised after the shooting. Christmas Day attacker to Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab claims to have been personally recruited by al-Awlaki in Yemen.

But Yemeni Foreign Minister Abu Bakr al-Qirbi said today that al-Awlaki is not a terrorist.

You know how bad they are?

One of them threw a brick through my window one night at about 1:00 am! I didn't notice it for a while because I was tweaking out on toad venom-infused vodka and turning my car alarm on and off over and over and over again with the fob-thingy. But when I noticed it, I felt so violated. And of course, I couldn't go to the police. Because I was totally hammered and talking to a microscopic squid in the wallpaper.

Aaaaanyway. So there's some yardwork lined up and outdoor stuff. In reality, this is a welcome change of pace. Yardwork is fun.

What chores you people got on tap for the weekend? Looks like it's going to be pretty nice most everywhere.

While President Obama makes calf eyes at Dmitry Medvedev, Moscow is trying to push the U.S. out of central Asia:

Russia has long dreamed of evicting the United States from Central Asia and a Russian official said on Thursday that Moscow would urge the interim Kyrgyz government to shut the U.S. base.

Suspicions of the Kremlin's hand in the unrest were raised when Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin became the first world leader to recognize the authority of the self-proclaimed government, just hours after it took power.

Washington has been more guarded, refusing to endorse either President Kurmanbek Bakiyev or the self-proclaimed government leaders, some of whom have already raised the specter of shutting the base.

"Russia was very quick to act. Both China and the U.S., by comparison, were caught on the hop," said Nick Day, chief executive of business intelligence firm Diligence LLC.

"Russia is going to dominate Kyrgyzstan and that means problems for the U.S," he said. "Russia will use this as a lever in negotiations with America."

Let's see: Georgia and Ukraine slipping from us. Now Kyrgyzstan is in Moscow's sights and Obama's hands are tied if he wants his precious nuclear legacy to last longer than a week.

No wonder Obama is trying to reassure ex-Soviet bloc NATO allies that he's not abandoning them.

He was to attend the Katyn Memorial. Reports say 97 passengers were aboard, there were no survivors. Apparently there was heavy fog, and the pilot made several attempts to land.
