What happens when vehicles we all drive are legislated out of existence?

Americans behind the wheel die.

According to a 2003 NHTSA study, when a vehicle is reduced by 100 pounds the estimated fatality rate increases as much as 5.63 percent for light cars weighing less than 2,950 pounds, 4.70 percent for heavier cars weighing over 2,950 pounds and 3.06 percent for light trucks. Between model years 1996 and 1999, these rates translated into additional traffic fatalities of 13,608 for light cars, 10,884 for heavier cars and 14,705 for light trucks.12

* A 2001 National Academy of Sciences panel found that constraining automobile manufacturers to produce smaller, lighter vehicles in the 1970s and early 1980s "probably resulted in an additional 1,300 to 2,600 traffic fatalities in 1993."13

Every. Goddamned initiative. Kills people.

Meet Congressman Phil Hare (D-IL). He actually appears to be dumber than the guy who is worried about Guam capsizing.

Very rarely has so much stupid been packed into just a little more than 3 minutes.

Now meet Bobby Schilling, he's the Republican running against Hare.

The district is a Democrat leaning one but not by an insurmountable margin (D+3). It's right next door to the district that's home to Caterpillar's corporate HQ, so I'm guessing the whole $100 million in health care charges thing might come up a time or two during the campaign.

I hope the congressman enjoys his moment in the limelight.

I saw this ad while watching Justified on FX the other night.

In the short ad, I thought it seemed like an uncompensated remake of The In-Laws, with Cruise doing a take-off on Peter Falk's character, particularly the odd cheerfulness in violent situations.

In this longer ad, it's even clearer it's an In-Laws remake, with Cruise's character being described as insane, having had a full-blown psychotic break. Just as in The In-Laws, the Cruise/Falk character tries to explain that that's just a cover story to his unwilling partner, and the partner, understandably, is unconvinced.

Anyway, it's a ripoff, but I don't mind. The In-Laws is one of the best movies ever made and I don't mind that they tried a rehash of it.

Bear in mind the numbers from the census count decide the number of Representatives for each state, and determine the apportionment of Representatives in each state, for the next ten years.

There has been a long exodus away from the Rust Belt to the Sun Belt. Every ten years, we add additional Representatives from Republican territory, and subtract an equal number from Democratic territory.

That's not going to happen if a lot of conservatives have a weird "off the grid" idea of boycotting the census.

When last we heard from Rep. Hank "The Man from Atlantis" Johnson, he was gravely warning us about his "fear" that the Island of Guam was going to "tip over and capsize" from 8,000 new military personnel being stationed on it.

Remember, Johnson's Scientific Theory of Island Stabalization posits that the stability of an island is inversely proportional to the population that gathers upon it at its "least widest" point.

He doesn't like that his theory is being scoffed out all over talk radio and the blogosphere, though. So he has defended it the only way he can: not on the scientific merits of his claim (which, I am told, has the potential of radically reshaping the way man views the sciences of Geology and Vulcanology) but by insinuating that critics are simply too stupid to get the gist of what he was saying.

So speaketh Rep. Johnson (D-I'mSuperSerial!):

“I wasn’t suggesting that the island of Guam would literally tip over I was using a metaphor to say that with the addition of 8,000 Marines and their dependents – an additional 80,000 people during peak construction on the tiny island with a population of 180,000 – could be a tipping point which could adversely affect the island’s fragile ecosystem and could overburden its stressed infrastructure. Having traveled to Guam last year, I saw firsthand how this beautiful – but vulnerable island – could easily become overburdened, and I was simply voicing my concerns that the addition of that many people could tip the delicate balance and do permanent harm to Guam.”

Ahh...he was using a metaphor, you see. He was speaking so gosh-darn figuratively that y'all just couldn't comprehend it.

Like reading Swift to kindergardners. Most of them will go home and ask their Parents how Irish children taste. Stupid kindergardners.

The Tea Party Express has raised more than $50,000 over the past few days to target Democratic Rep. Bart Stupak, whose last minute deal over abortion language in President ObamaÂ’s health-care bill allowed the legislation to pass, the Daily Caller has learned.

The group is in the production stage of developing ads for a major TV and radio blitz throughout Michigan starting April 6th. The group considers Stupak to be their No. 2 target, after Sen. Harry Reid.

“We expect to really juice up all these stops, and make ‘stupaking’ a household verb for putting a spotlight on a politician that sells out his own principles,” said a Tea Party Express staffer of the group’s bus trips across the country.

Kind of Funny: Late in the podcast, starting at 51:25, he starts pitching his movie. It's one of those "Character Goes Blind and Gets Eye Transplant From Other Person Whose Memories Start Becoming the Character's." He calls it Gay Eye, and the idea is that a straight guy gets eye transplants from a gay guy and his eyes keep focusing on dude's dicks.

It's stupidly funny. I think the funny part for me is his apparent genuine belief it's a good idea for a movie. (He's faking that, I'm sure, but he sells his belief in his "project.")
