Calls for transition to "green" economy as cure for ills

Prime Minister George Papandreou stressed on Wednesday the need for a new “green” economic development model and closer international cooperation against speculators.This pommy imbecile is casting about the same excuses Hugo Chavez did/does. Nooooooo, its not our fault for squandering crazy amounts of borrowed money we can't possibly ever pay back, its those other guys, the speculators. THEY are out to get us....“The focus on green economy is no longer just a case of sensitivity towards the environment, but an issue of creating a sustainable economy also,”...
“Due to the experience of the ongoing economic crisis, we realized that a closer international cooperation is needed to develop forward-thinking energy policies, as well as face the speculators who now attack Southern European countries,” Papandreou said...
Equally depressing and nation dooming is the outlook of the Greek people themselves. Recent polling suggests they still haven't come to grips with the harsh austerity measures that would be necessary to pull out of the death spiral vortex threatening to destroy them completely.
An opinion poll released on Sunday showed that most of the Greeks have no confidence in the government's ability to handle the current economic crisis.With a 55% majority unwilling to accept the draconian measures necessary to pull out of this, it would seem Greece's fate is sealed. In the stages of grief they're still somewhere between "denial" and "bargaining" and have quite a ways to go before "acceptance".About 64 percent of the respondents said that they have "very little or a little" confidence that the socialist PASOK government could lead the country out of the crisis and into a better future, according to the survey conducted for the newspaper Paron.
Some 35 percent of the respondents said they do not trust the government's ability at all.
Some 55 percent of Greeks said they are not willing to accept any more austerity measures in the future...
My outlook for Greece after reading all this is very grim, much grimmer than last week. They're going to fail and default because they'll keep electing politicians who keep promising them (comparative) cake and circuses.
Seriously, who other than other sucker governments would loan them a dime with 55% of the public saying they won't accept the measures needed to ensure that dime would get paid back?

— Maetenloch It was one year ago on a night just like tonight that the infamous Memorial Day ONT happened. It shocked even veteran moron-types, brought down anger and pinch-faced scoldery from on high, and damn near got the ONT canceled.
So in memory of that episode, for tonight only the usual ONT rules are partially suspended. So curse all you want and empty out that disgusting potty mouth of yours.
In fact let's make a new rule for tonight - everyone must curse at least once in their comments. Failure will be punished by mockery until the next poor bastard/bastardess screws up. It's not a flame war though, so think love - not war. Oh and Vegas rules also apply - what happens on tonight's ONT, stays on tonight's ONT. Tomorrow Pixy will don his HazMat suit and dispose of it properly. And afterwards let us never speak of it again.

On the one hand, you have an American Army General, receiving the Emperor of Japan under his terms, having for four years spent precious American blood and treasure to bring a vicious aggressor under control, and then embarking on a seven year mission to rebuild their nation as a democracy, and a global partner.
Not to punish them. The fight was the punishment. And it was punishing, and it was just. To defeat them first, to change them secondly, and then, remarkably to embrace them.
On the other hand, you have the leader of the greatest nation in the free world, meeting the leader of our partner nation, an ally, one bound to us by our conscious and active efforts after their destructive perfidy, to make them one of us on the globe, leaning down to kiss his ass as if we owed him an apology for having spent our treasure and blood to bring them into the fold.
I'm sure you see the problem.
MacArthur didn't pose for pictures for the press like a ninny, he knew exactly the message he would telegraph by foregoing the tie, just regular khakis, hell, even his hands "casually" placed in his back pockets. Towering over the Emperor who was attired in his resplendent best "ambassador-like" threads. Mac was sending a message. He did that, he was Mac.
Obama sent a message too, and I'll bet you a paycheck he had no friggin idea what it was. "I should suck up. There's something fundamentally wrong with us, and it'll look good if I acknowledge it right here and now."
He's embarrassed about one of our greatest and most costly accomplishments to mankind, and the nations. Because he is a ninny.

— Gabriel Malor Liberals' ideological stranglehold on public school education is being challenged, so it's no wonder Michael Birnbaum of the Washington Post and Michael Brick of the New York Times resort to outright lies about what Texas' recent curriculum changes require.
Ann Althouse slaughters Birnbaum by comparing his fantastic claims with the actual text of the Texas Board of Education's new standards.
Here's just one example out of many she discusses: Birnbaum writes that the new standards "draw an equivalency between Jefferson Davis's and Abraham Lincoln's inaugural addresses." The actual text, as quoted by Althouse:
Students are required to "analyze the ideas contained in Jefferson Davis' inaugural address and Abraham Lincoln's ideas about liberty, equality, union, and government as contained in his first and second inaugural addresses and the Gettysburg Address." The word "equivalency" is uncalled for. The requirement is to analyze, not to be indoctrinated that the ideas are the same.
Meanwhile, Tom Maguire gives Brick the back of his hand for making similar errors. Once again, simply going to the actual text of the new curriculum standards demonstrates that Brick is living in a fantasy world.

Later: Oh, and California is moving fast to prevent public school students out here from learning about things like the Venona Papers, capitalism, Phyllis Schlafly (!!), and the conservative resurgence of the 1980s.
The California Senate is expected to pass a bill this week that would require the California Board of Education to reject any textbooks that have been influenced by the Texas Board of Education standards.

— Gabriel Malor He just won President Obama's childhood district in the special election in Hawaii after the national Democrats ended up in a civil war with the local Democrats. Obama got 70 percent of the vote there in 2008.
Djou won 39.5 percent of the vote. Hanabusa, the DCCC candidate, got 30.8 percent. Case, the local Dems and union candidate, got 27.6 percent.
Djou will be the first Republican to represent Hawaii in Congress since Pat Saiki, who served from 1986-1990. He will have to begin campaigning again almost immediately, as the seat will be up for grabs again in the November general election.
This breaks the six eleven (see correction) seat special election streak Democrats have been on in the House. Correction: it looks like it was an eleven seat streak (counting PA-12).
