Overnight Open Thread - TGIF Edition
— Maetenloch

Happy Friday all.

Oh and a little ONT update: You know it's gets a little tiring sometimes putting out the ONT 7 days a week, 365 days a year. So with the recent fall in the rupee I've been authorized by blog authorities to bring in a guest blogger to fill in for me for me periodically on the ONT.

So it'll be nice to finally be able to sleep more than four hours at a time without the porn-talk alarm going off and to actually leave the lighthouse for non-court-mandated excursions. I've also heard that on the mainland they now have stores that just carry video games and video game accessories and that's all. Plus word has it that the hookers are particularly fine this year. So I'm hoping to be able to check all that out soon. More details to follow.

The Best Magician Ever?

And proof that a frequently used phrase can actually happen. With magic. Slightly NSFW at the end.

Obama: Ground Zero Victory Mosque? Absolutely, Sounds Awesome
— Ace

He took a break from his grueling golf/vacation schedule to have a dinner.

It was the president's first remarks about the mosque controversy. The White House previously called the matter solely a local one.

At the dinner attended by two Muslim-American congressmen, Obama acknowledged that hot-fire emotions the planned mosque and cultural center have stoked.

"Ground Zero is, indeed, hallowed ground," the president said.

"But let me be clear: as a citizen, and as president, I believe that Muslims have the same right to practice their religion as anyone else in this country. That includes the right to build a place of worship and a community center on private property in lower Manhattan, in accordance with local laws and ordinances.
Obama said Islam is not the enemy, al-Qaida is.

"We must never forget those who we lost so tragically on 9/11, and we must always honor those who have led our response to that attack — from the firefighters who charged up smoke-filled staircases, to our troops who are serving in Afghanistan today," he said.

"Our enemies respect no freedom of religion. Al Qaida's cause is not Islam — it is a gross distortion of Islam. These are not religious leaders — these are terrorists who murder innocent men, women and children. In fact, al Qaida has killed more Muslims than people of any other religion — and that list of victims includes innocent Muslims who were killed on 9/11."

You know who else my enemy is? My enemy is someone who think it's a good idea to advertise the virtues of Islam next door to Islam's Greatest Hit.

Oh: Some of us are debating the actual electoral outlook in this thread, beginning at post 89... In case you care, I'm offering my real opinion on what's going to happen there.

In posts I'll be conservative; in the comments I'll say what I really think. And what I really think is bloodbath.

Ohhhh... And it's Friday, too. So it can be lost over the weekend.

Well, as they say, Praise Allah (pbuh) it's Friday.

So my question is: Do I do a bunch of them, wasting them tonight, or put one up a day for a while?

I guess I answered my own question.

Barbara Boxer: I'm Losing Because Voters Are "Grumpy"
— Ace

So Chuckie Schumer says "sour;" Senator Barbara "Senator Boxer" Boxer says "grumpy."

I think the Democrat Party is in unanimous agreement that the public is irrational.

What was that term I remember from 1994...? Ah yes: Angry White Men. "The nation had a temper tantrum tonight," Peter Jennings informed me then.

Facing the toughest re-election fight of her career, three-term U.S. Sen. Barbara Boxer attributed her sagging approval rating to voters who are "grumpy" about the sputtering economy and an opponent, Republican nominee Carly Fiorina, who "doesn't have a job" and spends her time "going around the state trashing me in every way possible."

The California Democrat's remarks came during an hourlong interview with the Mercury News editorial board, in which she cast the election as a choice between moving forward or returning to the policies of President George W. Bush; suggested she would favor raising the Social Security tax on "very upper-income workers" to help balance the federal budget; and said she favors lowering the filibuster threshold in the Senate from 60 votes to 55 to curb what she called Republican obstructionism.

That's cute. She thinks we'll need the filibuster next January.

By the way: So Carly Fiorina doesn't have a job?

Is that, like, a bad thing?

She doesn't have a job like 15% of your constituents, Senator Ma'am Senator?

Really?

And whose fault is that?

Oh I mean --

And who is to be credited for that particular success?

Today's Democratic Party

You will credit us for all our success.

But first, you will blow me.

Thanks to Artesian.

Keep Those Sweet Sweet Insults Coming: Senator Schumer Announces That "Sour" Voters Refuse To Credit Democrats For Their Successes
— Ace

Bitter.

Clingy.

Sour.

“Sour” voters reluctant to award Democrats for their legislative success are one of the reasons the party is trailing in the polls, according to Sen. Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.).

But Senate leaders will keep trying to change that with a jobs-based September agenda, the Senate Democratic Conference vice chairman said Thursday.

Asked why the Democrats are still expected to lose seats in November after passing major bills like healthcare reform, credit card reform, a fair-pay act and Wall Street reform, Schumer said voters are frustrated and donÂ’t feel the effects of the legislation.

“It’s the world we’re in. It’s a much more negative, critical world, and people are sour now,” he said. “The thing they’re most sour about is the future, not the present. In other words, if people were sure that things would be better five years from now, they’d be less sour.

“Given that, I think people are more negative right now across the board — the right wing is more negative, the left wing is more negative, the center is more negative. That’s how it is.”

It's because they're sour they won't give you credit for your successes?

Wouldn't your successes create a state of non-sourness?

If said successes were real and not, like, just something you see at night when you dream?

Today's Democratic Party

Go fuck yourself, America.

I don't know who tipped me this but thank you very much.

How Bad Is It? Usually Democrats wait until after an election to begin insulting the public that turned them out as stupid, racist, ignorant, and emotionally sour-pussed.

Now they're doing it three months before one.

They're getting their hate on for the public very early.

Real Headline: "Albino Python On Cocaine Confronts Police"
— Ace

It confronted them by saying "It's my life! I'll do what I want!! You're just jealous!"

So here's something.

The snake, which was three metres long and was kept hungry so that it would be more aggressive, was allowed to roam the apartment to scare addicts into paying for their drugs, police said.

Animal services were called to capture the snake, which was tempted into captivity using a whole chicken and sent to a nearby zoo.

The reptile had been resting on 200 grams of pure cocaine, and a further five kilograms were found in the apartment.

AP Says Obama Must Take Vacations to Help Local Economies
— Ace

"Take vacations?" Is that the right way to say it?

When you're on vacation more than work, isn't it less "taking vacation" and more "a part time job with flex-scheduling"?

Anyway, of a piece with this morning's I Feel My Pain duo of Pity Poor Boy-King Obama bleats from the NYT and Katie Couric, here's AP, where the AP stands for Always Predictable:

Obama looks to boost Gulf tourism with family trip

Can I point out? For three days, then he's off to flood-ravaged, plague-sick Martha's Vinyard for ten days.

Feel the healing, Gulf!

I love how Obama's not really taking a vacation to take time off from his busy golf schedule but to heal a whole region.

President Barack Obama is heeding his own advice to American vacationers, taking his family to the Gulf Coast this weekend to help the sagging tourism industry.
The president will arrive Saturday and spend just over 24 hours in the Panama City, Fla., area, a quick jaunt in contrast to the family's upcoming 10-day vacation to Martha's Vineyard, known as a destination for the wealthy and privileged.

White House officials dismiss questions about the length of the family's stay, saying that has no relation to the president's commitment to the region's recovery.

"The president is deeply committed to the folks in the Gulf region," said White House spokesman Bill Burton. He said Obama wants to ensure the people of the Gulf Coast are "made whole again after what was a terrible catastrophe."

Obama's been promoting the idea of Gulf travel as a way for Americans to help the region's recovery. The White House says the Obamas and daughter Sasha (her sister Malia's at summer camp) plan to spend much of their time in the Gulf enjoying the area's recreational activities.

Slublog, who sent this, noted that when Bush traveled places, he was called lazy and disengaged, and not credited with healing the land by his mere traveling through it.

You know what I'm thinking of, right?

No? And you call yourself geeks.

Chinese business argues against corn ethanol scam
— Purple Avenger

I've been meaning to post this for a few days, but have been slacking since Ace was on f'n fire for a while.

Apparently, Chinese business is showing a lot more intelligence and common sense than the US congress which keeps flogging that same dead retarded 3-legged horse.

China's biggest membership association of private petroleum enterprises has made a proposal to the National Reform and Development Committee (NRDC), the country's top economic planner, to halt the corn-to-ethanol project of producing alcoholic gasoline, the Beijing Times reports...

...The PFCGCC said that to enjoy the subsidy of 1880 Yuan per ton of alcoholic gasoline for vehicles and the tax-exemption policy for the corn-to-ethanol project, some plants in China began a wave of buying corn, causing the severe shortage of corn for animal feed and the rapid increase of corn prices.

"In the first half year of this year, China imported 78 million tons of corn, mainly due to the higher domestic corn price than overseas. In July, the average corn price in northeast China was 1845 Yuan per ton, rising by 15.7% year on year" said Zhang Jianbo, a market analyst with Distribution Productivity Promotion Center of China Commerce...

Of course the US has also been criticized for this insane subsidy of corn ethanol as well and blamed for dramatic price increases in corn based products in Mexico, and South/Central America.

The bottom line is corn ethanol makes no economic sense, never did, and when the total environmental impact end-to-end from dirt farm to tailpipe is considered, its even worse than ordinary gasoline. Its always been a lose/lose proposition all the way around, and many of the environmental groups have started to cool on their enthusiasm for it as the real cost/impacts manifested themselves.
