Now, It's Time For The NHL Winter Classic
— DrewM

Washington Capitals v. Pittsburgh Penguins on NBC.

This is the match up the league wanted because it involves the two best players in the league Alexander Ovechkin of the Caps and Sidney Crosby of the Penns.

As much as it pains me to admit, Crosby is simply the best player in the world right now. He just had a 25 game scoring streak ended and he's the guy every team is trying to stop every night. Yes, he can be a chippy player and a whinny bitch at times but his talent is undeniable. Caps coach Bruce Boudreau gave Crosby a great compliment on the last episode of HBO's 24/7. He told his players, it doesn't matter if you hit him or not, he's simply going to play his game. You can't ruffle his feathers, even if he cries about it later.

Ovechkin on the other hand is a much more emotional player and he's a beast physically. Expect to see him flying around tonight hitting people, especially his 'good friend' Evgeni Malkin.

These two teams played as good a mid-season game as you're ever going to see last week. This should be a great one as well.

Okay...scene looks great. I was worried that playing the game at night would suck. Wrong.

For some reason (MONEY) college football has managed to abdicate New Year's Day and the NHL of all people is going to own it going forward. Not quite sure how that happened.

Random thought...Penguins' third jersey is just awful. On the other hand, Captials throw back looks fantastic.

Dear sports teams: Old school red, white and blue is ALWAYS a winner (see the old New England Patriot uniforms).

Not The NHL Winter Classic Game Thread
— DrewM

For the last few years we've used the Winter Classic as a chance for hockey morons to enjoy a moment in the HQ sun.

Today would have been no different, except now the game has been postponed to 8pm tonight because it's 50 degrees and rainy in Pittsburgh right now. We'll do a thread then but for now, here's an open thread.

If you're at all interested in the game, you should check out the HBO 24/7 series leading up to today's game between the Capitals and Penguins. Both teams and the NHL gave HBO total access to anything the wanted. The result is like candy to hockey fans and great TV for anyone remotely interested in what it's like to be a professional athlete.

If you're not up for watching the full hour long episodes, check out these two 15 minute segment from episode 3 highlighting last weeks game between the two teams. Fortunately, it lived up to the hype and the coverage HBO provided from all angles is simply amazing.

Fair warning...players, coaches, and referees were mic'ed up and there are enough F-Bombs to make even the most lurid moron blush a bit.

See you back here tonight for the game thread. more...

Israel game changer: Natural gas find off Hiafa largest worldwide in 10 years
— Purple Avenger

Israel is about to become a player in the world energy market.

...Noble Energy, a US-based oil and gas firm, along with its Israeli exploration partners, have confirmed the discovery of a huge offshore gas field called Leviathan, 130km off the coast of the Mediterranean port of Haifa.

Delek Energy, one of the Israeli partners, said on Wednesday that the discovery was the largest deepwater natural gas find in the world in the past decade.

Leviathan is estimated to have 450 billion cubic metres of gas and could transform Israel into an exporter of gas...

Russian Gazprom extortionists and European foreign policy hardest hit.

Now that Israel has something the Europeans want, and they'd probably be less inclined than Master/Blaster to declare "embargo on" compared to say...the Russian mob, this new year promises some interesting ummm..."modifications" of European positions towards Israel.

21 dead in Alexandria Egypt car bomb attack on Christian church during new year service
— Purple Avenger

Turning the other cheek appears to have fallen out of favor...

...After the explosion, enraged Christians emerging from the church clashed with police and stormed a nearby mosque, prompting fights and volleys of stone throwing with Muslims - a sign of the sectarian anger that has been arising with greater frequency in Egypt...

Meet the new year, same as the old year.
