Afternoon Open Thread
— Ace

I'm really trying to find some interesting stuff. Not having much luck.

I'm going back to an old stand-by from the first couple of years of the blog -- if there's no news, google "study penis vagina breasts" and see what nonsense pops up. Boom: There's always something.

This Is Good: Ben Howe commemorates the second anniversary of ObamaCare.

Let This Pothead Inform You There Really Was a UFO Crash, In Arizona. Or Somewhere. You Know, Air Force One. Dope.

Oily: Obama Claims Credit For Pipeline He's Blocked
— Ace

Trans-Canada is going forward with the southern half of the Keystone Pipeline, because they don't need administration approval for that half.

Obama, of course, has blocked the northern half, the half that actually connects to Canadian oil fields.

So what does Obama do? He goes to where the pipeline is being built, over his objection, and claims credit.

"It takes a special kind of politician to be able to hold a photo-op for a project he’s rejected – twice – and personally lobbied members of Congress to block. The American people are in for just such a spectacle today, as the president continues his tour de farce public relations adventure," House Speaker John Boehner said on Thursday.

President Barack Obama, making a campaign stop in Cushing, Okla., will declare his support for the southern section of the Keystone XL pipeline -- which will not connect to Canada's oil supply unless Obama approves the critical northern portion, which he has twice refused to do.

According to Boehner, Obama "will strain all credibility" on Thursday "by declaring his unwavering support for a private-sector project that heÂ’s single-handedly prevented from being completed."

Understand, I Didn't Bust In Your Mouth

Per se.

Bonus: Obama thinks oil costs $1.25 per barrel.

No wonder he doesn't see the problem.

Smelly Poseurs Put Out Song, "KILL KILL KILL Rush Limbaugh"
— Ace

YouTube hasn't yanked it yet, despite their policy of yanking anything whenever a protected liberal group whines about it.

Is it any good? No. Just generic speed metal and cookie-cutter Cookie Monster growl-singing.

Just more dirties, dirtying everything up.

Sandra Fluke: Gee Willickers, No, I Didn't Know Target Sold Birth Control Pills for $9/Month Within 3 Miles of My Broad Ass
— Ace

She then disputes the relevance of that.

How?

By asserting, with no citation to any source, that she's "informed" that some people with a conveniently-unnamed "genetic" disease can't take those particular pills (which ones? there are a lot of different types available at that price) but must take pills costing "$1500 per year."

Look, as a blogger, sometimes I, well, I don't make things up, but I pass things along without verification.

If I started telling Jake Tapper or anyone in the media things I'd been "informed of" by unnamed people in my comments, would they take it seriously?

No. They'd ignore it. People tell stories. People's stories tend to be those that push their agenda. Absent verification, they're just stories.

Has Jake Tapper or anyone else in the media checked Fluke's main claim -- that many insurance policies won't cover hormonal therapy when prescribed for medical reasons?

Because that's her big claim -- that while birth control per se might be cheap, some women have rare "genetic" diseases requiring birth control hormones for medical purposes, but insurers won't cover these costs. (These are the only conceivable truly high costs of "birth control.")

And yet, has she named a single policy or provider which maintains this bizarre scheme?

No.

And I asked her on Twitter.

She refused comment.

Toulouse Serial Killer Mohammad Mera Dead
— Ace

This article is confusing on the cause of death: it suggests he died due to jumping out of his apartment window and falling to his death, and also that he was shot in the head.

Perhaps both? Well, he's dead. That the article agrees on.

The Al Qaeda fanatic who murdered seven people in south west France died after being shot in the head in a vicious gunfire battle after police stormed his apartment following a 32-hour siege.

The Toulouse terrorist burst out of his flat's bathroom 'shooting insanely' at officers, before leaping to his death from a window.

In scenes reminiscent of a Hollywood film, Mohammad Merah, 23, unleashed round after round from automatic weapons after gas cannisters were thrown into his apartment and police stormed in.

Two officers were injured, including one who is still in a serious condition.

Did he have accomplices? Police are interested in a woman he was overheard speaking to.

The mystery woman is said to have been spotted talking to Merah from a train at the Gare de l’Est on Monday – just before he carried out an attack on a Jewish school.

Intrigued by the conversation – which was about the killing of three soldiers - another passenger is said to have asked the mystery woman ‘Were you talking to the Toulouse killer?’

Investigators are taking the lead ‘very seriously’, according to police sources, because it fits in Merah’s telephone records, which have since been compiled by the police.

I like the Daily Mail's choice to call him a "serial killer." It's good to stress that these are not "revolutionaries" or Holy Warriors or whatever delusional gay-panic romantic claptrap they've convinced themselves of, but simply murderers.

Oh, and Drudge: I didn't notice this. It went right over my head.

Drudge's headline, in all caps, is:

MOHAMMAD IS DEAD

Tami points out that's a baiting double-meaning. Pretty ballsy.

Sarkozy: Islam Had Nothing To Do With This. Are you sure of that, buddy? I think it has something to do with it.

France has shown its indignation and grit but has not allowed anger to take over.

The Muslim faith has nothing to do with the insane acts of this man. Before targeting Jewish children, he targeted other Muslims.

On the other hand, he's talking tough about cracking down on Jihadist websites and recruitment:

We must be implacable in defending our values. We will not allow this ideology to affect us.

From now on, any person who habitually consults websites that advocate terrorism or that call for hatred and violence will be punished by the law.

France will not tolerate forced recruitment or ideological indoctrination on its soil.

Teacher Assigns Virginia Middle Schoolers Task of Doing Opposition Research on Republican Candidates; No Similar Assignment For Obama
— Ace

I don't mind the basic idea of the lesson. It's how politics is actually done.

Why were no students assigned Barack Obama?

Because it's too easy? What?

There's a kicker here, too: They were instructed to send their reports to someone in the Barack Obama campaign, for its use, I imagine.

“This assignment was just creepy beyond belief — like something out of East Germany during the Cold War,” one frustrated father, who asked for his family to remain anonymous, told The Daily Caller.

The assignment was for students to research the backgrounds and positions of each of the GOP candidates for president and find “weaknesses” in them, the parent explained. From there, students were to prepare a strategy paper to exploit those weaknesses and then to send their suggestions to the Obama campaign.

Liberty teacher Michael Denman, who declined to comment, unveiled the assignment in mid-January when he broke the Civics HonorÂ’s class into four groups, one for each Republican candidate. The students were then to collaborate as a group and research the backgrounds of their assigned candidate.

Denman assigned two kids to write a paper revealing the identified “weaknesses,” two to write the attack strategy paper and two others to locate an individual inside the Obama campaign to whom they could send the information.

Obama: We Didn't Create The Program That Gave Money To Solyndra
— DrewM

Looks like the only heat Solyndra is now producing is on our feckless President.

We are doing the all of the above strategy right. Obviously, we wish Solyndra hadnÂ’t gone bankrupt. Part of the reason they did was because the Chinese were subsidizing their solar industry and flooding the market in ways that Solyndra couldnÂ’t compete. But understand, this was not our program per se.

Congress–Democrats and Republicans–put together a loan guarantee program because they understood historically that when you get new industries–it’s easy to raise money for start-ups, but if you want to take them to scale sometimes there’s a lot of risk involved, and what the loan guarantee program was designed to do was to help start-up companies get to scale. And the understanding is that some companies are not going to succeed, some companies are going to do very well, but the portfolio as a whole ends up supporting the kind of innovation that helps make America successful in this innovative 21st century economy. Do I wish that Solyndra had gone bankrupt? Absolutely not. And obviously it’s heartbreaking it happened for the workers who were there.

There was an earlier loan program but as you might recall, the Bush administration refused to give Solyndra a loan under that. They only got the money after a new program was created under the so-called "stimulus" bill.

That Obama feels the need to lie about this shows they know the issue is cutting against them. Time to double down on it GOP.

Of Course: John Edwards Reportedly Connected To High-End NY Prostitution Ring
— DrewM

We can only hope there's no video of this one.

The alleged encounter took place while Edwards was raising money in New York for his failed presidential bid in 2007, and was arranged by a campaign aide, the news website first reported on Thursday.

...

Edwards, who was Sen. John Kerry's (D-Mass.) vice presidential running mate on the 2004 Democratic ticket, is the first name to leak from the alleged madam’s “black book.”

The woman involved provided details about the alleged encounter to investigators at the Manhattan District AttorneyÂ’s office in 2008. No charges were brought against Edwards.

So he was cheating on his mistress and his sick wife? The ghost of Ted Kennedy emails to say, "er, um, dude...that's a little over the top even for me".

I wonder if the late Fred Baron picked up the tab. He was the bestest best friend ever after all.

Oh and don't forget, Edwards is still facing federal charges dealing with campaign fund/hush money for his mistress.

Top Headline Comments 3-22-12
— Gabriel Malor

Happy Thursday.

The NYTimes has no less than three separate Etch-a-Sketch stories in today's paper. One on the front page. One on A18. And one on D9.

Breaking news caveat applies: multiple French news Twitter accounts are saying the Islamist Toulouse killer is dead after police stormed the apartment. Killed while resisting arrest.

Bloomberg News reports that Obama's unnecessary approval for the southern leg of the Keystone XL project will not speed construction, which was already slated to begin in June.

The Daily Oklahoman---which, for those of you not from Oklahoma, could never be mistaken as GOP-leaning paper---slams Obama ahead of his "disingenuous" (x2!) "photo op."

NASA's MErcury Surface, Space Environment, GEochemistry, and Ranging (MESSENGER) spacecraft has detected signs of water ice buried at Mercury's poles. I suppose now folks are gonna want a Mercury base?

They Live! 2012 Edition

To see the world as it really is all you have to do is open your eyes. And put on the special sunglasses.

Pro-tip: If someone ever does ask you to put on some special sunglasses, just humor them and do it. Unless of course you enjoy pointless 5 minute fight scenes that end up with  you....putting on the sun glasses.

Oh and always bring enough gum.
