Longtime friend-of-the-HQ Karol mentioned that there is also a get-together to toast Breitbart's memory on Monday evening in NYC. The details are here. It's not a "moron meetup" per se but I'm sure there'll be several morons there, in addition to many other fine folk. Sounds like a great opportunity for NYC readers to get out of their mom's basements and mark the passing of a one-of-a-kind man.

If you know of any other celebrations of Breitbart's life, let me know and I'll update.

There will be a moron meetup in Santa Monica on Sunday evening and we will toast the memory of Andrew Breitbart. By "we" I mean me (Gabe) and whoever shows up.

True story: back in 2007 or 08, I threw a moron meetup in Santa Monica and invited a bunch of local bloggers and our readers. This was before the Bigs or maybe just when the Bigs were getting off the ground. I didn't invite Breitbart because I didn't know him then. One of the other bloggers mentioned it to him, so he crashed the meetup anyway. He was very cool and he liked this blog even then. He liked you guys.

This is the worst recession anyone has seen in decades. Many people have lost their jobs, their homes, and their businesses.
The price of fuel is spiking, and food is high too.

Most of us are holding it together, hanging in there, taking care of ourselves and family, cutting back on all non-essentials, and making do without a lot of things that we used to take for granted.

But some people can't take care of themselves. They just can't.
We need to help them.

It ain't a full-blown throw down like they do in Taiwan, but oh boy is it good. A Republican minority in the state Senate outmaneuvers the Democrat majority with three Dems on a wire over their budget. A defection of three Democrats let the Republicans pass a budget that was largely written by Republicans, makes $722 million in cuts, and leaves a half-billion-dollar reserve.

The move came during a routine session on the Senate floor Friday afternoon and appeared to take the majority Democrats by surprise. State Sen. Don Benton, R-Vancouver, moved for the “9th Order of Business,” a procedural motion which allows a majority of members to vote to advance bills from a committee to the Senate floor. Republicans plucked an early version of the budget that had been submitted late last year by Gov. Christine Gregoire, as well as three Republican measures necessary to implement the budget that had been stalled in committee.

As the roll call was sounded and the three Democrats announced their votes, it was obvious the battle was over. But majority Democrats proposed delaying motions, including one that required Senate clerks to read the governorÂ’s entire 233-page budget bill in full.

“I want to know what’s in it,” demanded Senate Democratic Floor Leader Tracey Eide, D-Kent.

That was despite the fact that the governorÂ’s bill had been released during the month of December, was widely publicized at the time, and was certain to be discarded the moment the Republican budget amendment was proposed.

I donÂ’t have a personal anecdote to share about Andrew. I only admired him from the flickering half-light at the edge of the campfire of conservative new media; a campfire built by Andrew and a very few giants like him.

What I learned from Andrew is that there are cultural issues (not necessarily any particular social issues) that are inseparable from fiscal issues. He showed me that the ruling class has attempted make itself indispensable to greater and greater numbers, in order to ensure its perpetuity, by incrementally re-making and re-defining culture. This re-definition of our culture is done through a gay little marriage between low expectations, lack of personal accountability, and the government-supplied safety net which makes it possible for people to live well even while making poor decisions.

I have tossed this out as an idea. I don't know if it's true. I think it might be true and maybe we should consider it.

If someone's having a panic attack, the worst possible thing to do, as someone trying to help, is to play into it. To pay too much attention. To act very concerned.

People do that, thinking it's helpful. In fact, in exacerbates the situation.

My point is this: To what extent have we played into and exacerbated this absurd Muslim psychopathy over the Koran?

And to what extent would it be defeated if we simply stopped playing into it, and actually routinized the destruction of Korans (or other shows of disrespect, or, more accurately, "refusing to treat the Muslim religion as the officially sanctified state religion of America")?

To what extent are we encouraging these little spells by playing along with them? By treating the Koran as scared, most of the time, to what extent are we writing our own tragic ending when some stupid book gets burned?

Isn't it dangerous to feed the delusions of the deluded? Isn't the right course of action to insist on a more grounded view of reality?

Shouldn't we set the default, routine, expected mode of behavior as "we are not a Muslim nation and furthermore are forbidden by the Constitution from treating one religion as sacrosanct"?

Sort of: "Get used to it, this is the way it is, and stop acting like monkeys."

I don't know if that would help, necessarily.

But our current policy also seems to not help, and is furthermore repellent.
