The 138th running of the Kentucky Derby will begin at 6:24.

Among the favorites in the 138th running of the Derby are Union Rags, trained by Michael Matz of Barbaro fame, at 9-2; Bodemeister, 7-1; Gemologist, 8-1; Take Charge Indy, 10-1; and Hansen, 13-1.

Hansen is a colt, who a lot of people were fooled into thinking was a filly, and then felt really weird about it later.

Until then, NBC will be showing a lot of hats.

Via Hot Air, Romney writes an open letter to President Obama in the Cleveland Plain Dealer.

Dear Mr. President,

Welcome to Ohio. I have a simple question for you: Where are the jobs?

As we enter the fourth year of your term, unemployment is over 8 percent and has been for your entire term. Nearly 23 million men and women are unemployed, underemployed or are no longer even looking for work. In the face of such challenges, many Americans have simply given up hope.

I recognize, of course, as do all Americans, that you inherited an economic crisis. But you've now had three years to turn things around. The record of those three years is clear. Your policies have failed, not only in Ohio, but across the nation.

The results are a continuing tragedy for millions upon millions of people. Everywhere I go, I meet Americans who are tired of being tired, and many of those who are fortunate enough to have a job are working harder for less. This is not the way it is supposed to be in America. This is not the way it needs to be.

Mr. President, forgive me for being blunt, but when it comes to economic affairs, you're out of your depth. Unlike you, I am not a career politician. Unlike you, I've spent more than two decades working in the private sector, starting new businesses and turning around failing ones. Undoing the damage you've done will be a daunting challenge. But I've learned a thing or two about how government policies can kill private investment and stifle job creation and I have a plan to get government out of the way.

Mr. President, your promises now ring hollow. If you have brought new ideas to Ohio for creating jobs, why have you waited three years to unveil them? Have you suddenly had a revelation, or is it because 2012 is an election year?

Captain Ed continues insisting we should not look at the unemployment rate -- lower than it ought to be, due to millions of people fleeing the American labor market, but at actual employment.

A thirty year low in the number of Americans working.

And this, Obama claims, constitutes "success"?

Lest you think this is only his new routine because he has launched his reelection campaign today (snortle!), there is a chronological archive.

If you search back in this archive, you come to one inescapable conclusion: it is virtually impossible for this man to get any actual work done, with all these trifling and petty interruptions to his duty as head of state! Good Lord, people!

Why, there are large, lofty, looming decisions to be made, and yet - somehow - always there is another fundraiser that takes precedence. Always more jetting around, always more brief remarks to be delivered to some crowd of high schoolers or trade unionists. This must be intensely frustrating to driven, workaholic Obama.

One would think that his speechifyin' is somehow more appreciated by his inner circle than his deft administrative wizardry.

Thoroughbred racing, first weekend in May in Louisville. The 138th run of the "Greatest Two Minutes in Sports." One and a quarter miles.

Here's a Derby thread if you wanna talk about it. I've never seen a race at Churchill Downs, but I have toured it with a friend. Kind of an amazing place.

There's a white thoroughbred running today. They're talkin it up.

Before he absconded with a bottle of whiskey and a single sock, CDR-M informed me that today is Star Wars Day. I don't know much about Star Wars. I've watched the movies, but I don't consider myself an uber-fan. I do know that Orthodox Star Wars Day isn't for another two weeks.
