Home is the sailor from the sea
— Dave in Texas

Home is the sailor, home from sea
Her far-borne canvas furled
The ship pours shining on the quay
The plunder of the world.

Home is the hunter from the hill
Fast in the boundless snare
All flesh lies taken at his will
And every fowl of air.

'Tis evening on the moorland free,
The starlit wave is still
Home is the sailor from the sea,
The hunter from the hill.

-- A.E. Housman

RIP Chris Kyle. Your bride spoke of you in words that were remarkable. May God bless her and your children in the hard time.

We have a land full of broken warriors that we need to help. Chris Kyle understood the need. I hope we rise up to his admonition and courage.

CNN's Don Lemon: We Must Take Seriously Chris Dorner's "Not Crazy" Manifesto
Ex-Girfriend: Chris Dorner is "Twisted" and "Super-Paranoid"

— Ace

Different perspectives.

Don Lemon is a hyperpartisan leftist who has Sympathy for a Devil because he wrote a screed that, while probably all made up, nevertheless satisfies the threshold to engage tribal racial and political loyalties.

On the other hand, someone who had to deal with this psychopathic serial killer (have we lost our minds? he's a serial killer) pronounces him crazy.

In the web posting, Dorner is described as "severely emotionally and mentally disturbed," ''twisted" and "super paranoid." It also said he flashed his police badge on their first date, lives with his mother and hates himself for being black — at one point asking her to act more like a white woman.

"Just be careful because this guy is a police officer and he will probably think that he can get away with anything. ... If you value your sanity, stay away from this guy."

President Obama Reconsidering Democracy, Constitution
— Ace

Why shouldn't the Executive have the power to pass laws without Congress?

President Obama is considering a series of new executive actions aimed at working around a recalcitrant Congress, including policies that could allow struggling homeowners to refinance their mortgages, provide new protections for gays and lesbians, make buildings more energy-efficient and toughen regulations for coal-fired power plants, according to people outside the White House involved in discussions on the issues. Â…

These and other potential actions suggest that Obama is likely to rely heavily on executive powers to set domestic policy in his second term. One White House official said that while the president does not see the actions as substitutes for more substantial legislation, he also wants to move forward on top priorities. Â…

“It is a very dangerous road he’s going down contrary to the spirit of the Constitution,” Sen. Charles E. Grassley (R-Iowa) said in a recent interview. “Just because Congress doesn’t act doesn’t mean the president has a right to act.” …

A "Constitutional law professor" doesn't understand why the Founders wrote the Constitution to deny the Executive King exactly this power.

Piers Morgan, Papal Truther
— Ace

Pope Benedict, who's 85, says he's stepping down due to deteriorating health.

I repeat: He's 85. Human health does indeed often deteriorate in the upper 80's.

You may wonder why I'm telling you something so obvious. I'm not telling you.

Carnival barker Piers Morgan isn't having it.

As a Catholic, I'm not buying this. Popes don't just quit because they're tired. What's going on here??

I assume that means he'll have a show tonight pushing his speculations and conspiracy theories.

Have They Frisked Benedict for Spoons & Artifacts?

Tonight on Piers Morgan, verified photos of the Pope making off with the silver. Like Judas.

Illinois: The Newest Constitutional Carry State?
— JohnE.

In December of last year, a federal appeals court struck down a law that forbid citizens in Illinois from carrying a firearm. Check out this gif to get an idea of the evolution of concealed carry laws in the United States. Illinois is currently the only "no issue" state in the union.

So, what does this mean? Well, if the legislature doesn't move quickly to enact some type of concealed carry law, the state will default to "Constitutional carry" on June 10, 2013. Republicans are taking the position that if they don't get exactly what they want (some form of "shall issue"), then they're content to let the deadline pass. Democrats looking for some new restrictive gun control law don't have a leg to stand on.

Concealed carry “will be a ‘shall issue’ permit, there will be no discretion by some bureaucrat as to whether you get to exercise your right,” he said.

“It will be a statewide permit, there will be no carve-out for Chicago. There will be no carve-out for Cook County,” Vandermyde said.

State Rep. Brandon Phelps, D-Harrisburg, who has authored several concealed-carry laws during his time in Springfield, said the federal court ruling goes even further.

"The clock is still ticking. June 10 is the deadline," Phelps said. "We filed a bill, a lot of people didn't think we were going to because we don't have to. Constitutional carry will set-in if we don't do something."

If the deadline should pass, Illinois would become the fifth Constitutional carry state behind Vermont, Alaska, Wyoming and Arizona.

Meanwhile, in California: Democrats are pushing for new gun laws that would make Andrew Cuomo blush:

1. Ban all semi-automatic rifles that accept detachable magazines.
2. Ban possession of high-capacity magazines.
3. Ban “bullet button” conversion kits.
4. Bans shotgun-rifle combinations.
5. Universal registration of all guns.
6. Background checks on ammunition.
7. Regulating gun loans.
8. Prevent prohibited individuals from living in homes with guns.
9. Cracking down on people who canÂ’t own guns legally but do anyway.
10. Required safety training for handgun owners.
I don't have to remind everyone what historically comes after universal registration, right?

Whoa.

Pope Benedict XVI will step down as of February 28th for health reasons. The last pope to step down was Pope Gregory XII in 1415, under rather different circumstances.

Charles C. W. Cooke has an excellent read over at NRO about Rep. Markey (likely soon-to-be Sen. Markey) and his hysterical obsession with bringing roller coasters under federal regulation.

LATimes is reporting that murderer Chris Dorner is the first domestic human target for drones. Apparently CBP, which has a half-dozen drones for border surveillance, is keeping a look-out for Dorner trying to cross to Mexico.

The White House is trying to force Republicans to negotiate on sequester-avoiding tax hikes. Part of that effort is, apparently, calling on federal agencies to make some fairly incredible claims, like for example the USDA, which says sequestration will cause an immediate two-week shutdown of the meat industry. The lie here is that furloughs would have to take place immediately, that they would have to cover all employees simultaneously, and that they would have to be consecutive, rather than spread out over the rest of the fiscal year.
