I don't expect Enland to "overreact" as the world fretted when we were attacked. But I have to think that Al Qaeda's little safe base in London-- that hook-handed monster, for example, openly supporting terrorism -- has come to an end.

Probably Too Early For Speculation... But based upon multiple bombs apparently never detonating, Confederate Yankee thinks this may have been a more amateurish operation than a full Al Qaeda "holy victory for Allah."

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Laboratories using new tissue engineering technology might be able to produce meat that is healthier for consumers and cut down on pollution produced by factory farming, researchers said on Wednesday.

While NASA engineers have grown fish tissue in lab dishes, no one has seriously proposed a way to grow meat on commercial levels.

But a new study conducted by University of Maryland doctoral student Jason Matheny and his colleagues describe two possible ways to do it.

Writing in the journal Tissue Engineering, Matheny said scientists could grow cells from the muscle tissue of cattle, pigs, poultry or fish in large flat sheets on thin membranes. These sheets of cells would be grown and stretched, then removed from the membranes and stacked to increase thickness and resemble meat.

Using another method, scientists could grow muscle cells on small three-dimensional beads that stretch with small changes in temperature. The resulting tissue could be used to make processed meat such as chicken nuggets or hamburgers.

"There would be a lot of benefits from cultured meat," Matheny said in a statement. "For one thing, you could control the nutrients."

Meat is high in omega-6 fatty acid, which is desirable, but not in large amounts. Healthful omega-3 fatty acids, such as those found in walnuts and fish oils, could be substituted.

Alternately, you could just substitute people.

Supposedly -- and I'm dubious -- a bear has learned to trick his way into households by knocking on the door.

They believe the 35-stone brown bear probably learned the trick while nudging a door to get it to open.

Experts speculate the nudging was mistaken by the owners for knocking and that the bear, pleased by the outcome, repeated the tactic.

The Loknar family from Gerovo in western Croatia said the bear had knocked at their door three times and they were now refusing to answer the door.

Well... duh.

It gets worse: the bear is actually a Jehovah's Witness, and has come to 1) pilfer your honey-jars and 2) just "rap about Jesus."

Around 300 activists from various political groups protested Egypt's rising unemployment on Wednesday and called on President Hosni Mubarak to resign.

Circled by almost the same number of riot police standing shoulder-to-shoulder as well as some pro-Mubarak protesters, demonstrators waved banners and chanted anti-Mubarak slogans in the crowded lower middle class Cairo district of Imbaba.

Dozens of police trucks were stationed in most of the streets surrounding and leading to the protests.

Carrying Egyptian flags and waving a red banner depicting the leftist revolutionary Ernest "Che" Guevara, demonstrators shouted "Oh Hosni Mubarak we are bankrupt. What did you do with our money?"

A bunch of protestors carrying Che banners?

They're learning. They're learning.

It's good to see class divisions splitting the country. It's divisive, of course, but these differences need to be aired, not papered-over by dreams of pan-Arabism and crude anti-semitism and anti-Americanism.

I really didn't intend the "Woe is blogging" post as fishing-derby for compliments. I appreciate them, and I thank you for them, but I don't take compliments well and so, you know, you can stop.

Please stop before JeffB. comes in here (where's he been?) and embarasses himself with his typical JeffB pussy-shit.

I really just meant it as an apology for what is a rather lengthy funk. I can't remember the last stand-alone humor piece I wrote. And the last good one? Cripes, have to go back to The Apprentice parody, way back in November.

And I'm not threatening retirement or anything like that. This isn't really a prelude to some announcement. Just a general cri de couer (that's French for "whining like a little bitch") about how lame this blog has been lately, and my inability to change that, and, to be frank, my lack of desire to do much to change that.

Sometimes I'm just not all that into it. Can't help it. I just ain't got the juice.

Retirement from this is possible, sometime down the road, if I finally decide I just don't want to do it anymore. But it would only be a semi-retirement; I would give up on the quick-posts-n-links sort of thing and just post longer stand-alone pieces when I had something I wanted to say and felt good about the material.

Few seem to retire permanently or completely from blogging. Not only is there the very selfish vanity thing, but there's also the therapuetic side. I don't do personal stuff much, but I vent out my political gripes, and that keeps me from going bananas when I watch the news.

So, really, not really retiring, not really considering it seriously right now, and, while I thank you for the well-wishes, they're not necessary. The biggest compliment you guys give is just clicking on this dumb site every day, except on the weekends, when half of my so-called "internet friends" decide they've got better things to do than read internet blogs.

Again, my main intent was just to say, "Yeah, I know this blog is in the crapper right now, but it's been in the crapper before and hopefully it will come out of the crapper soon."
