Katrina's Saddest Victim: Cindy Sheehan
— Ace

From Sharp As a Marble:

As the deluge of tears threatened to wash away the handful of protesters left, Cindy Sheehan spoke of the horrors the recent flood coverage by the media has had on her cause. Wearing a ‘No Flood For Oil’ t-shirt, Sheehan spoke to a throng of two or three journalism students about the aftermath of the recent Katrina coverage.

“It has been awful,” Sheehan said, barely able to conceal the pain in her voice. “This morning, I woke up and was going to plant another white cross and privately grieve over the loss of my son, Corey…. or Casey… whatever his name was, and there was only one or two cameramen available to cover my private moment. Then, I turned on MSNBC and CNN, thinking I would be able to watch my daily grief session at least a dozen times before my early afternoon nap, but instead they were covering something else. I’m not sure what it was, but there was a lot of unhappy people so it must have been Bush’s fault. Or the Jews.”

More Ideological Looting At The HuffPo
— Ace

Includes a direct hit on Arianna herself, noting that she's slaming the rich from the vantage point of her "...seven-figure home."

But more incredibly, someone is accusing blacks of cannibalism.

But that's okay, because even though there's no evidence of this, and he uses it as a jumping off point for a vicious anti-American screed (this cinches it, he says, though one gets the feeling he wasn't a fan of the US previously), he himself is black, and therefore can make up stories about cannibalism all he likes.

After all, his lie is in service of a "higher truth."

Krugman's Krazy Korrections
— Ace

He's made what I will charitably call "gross mistatements" about the 2000 and 2004 elections.

He's been forced to make two corrections thusfar -- and he's still "mistating" the facts.

Doesn't the New York Times have a policy that an alleged correction should be triply-vetted to make certain the correction is, in fact, correct?

Europe To Tap Oil/Gas Reserves To Aid US
— Ace

A hell of a gesture, and appreciated:

Europe will dip into its emergency reserves of gasoline to help the United States through an energy crisis that began when Hurricane Katrina smashed into Gulf coast refiners, EU governments said on Friday.

Spain and Germany said they were ready and able to send fuel across the Atlantic in an operation coordinated by the West's energy watchdog, the International Energy Agency. The United States confirmed it had requested assistance.

...

"It's self-evident that we support the American bid," German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder told a news conference in Berlin.

He expected a massive two million barrels per day of oil to be shipped over the next month -- more or less offsetting lost output from the Gulf coast's battered refineries.

I don't know what he means by "bid," either. Either way, it's his actions that count.

Gas Spikes Over $3, With Shortages In Midwest And On East Coast: It's Mad Max Days lately -- many gas stations just don't have any guzzoline.

Very bad for the economy. Europe is acting both generously and enlightenedly self-interested in trying to reduce the shortages. But let's focus on the "generous" part.

The Lost City of New Orleans?
— Ace

Interesting article deeming New Orleans the New Atlantis, basically.

I wonder how extensive a civil engineering project it would take to signifcantly reduce the constant jeopardy the city finds itself in.

One problem is that New Orleans' soil is basically sponge-like, and allows surges of water to run through it. Surging water doesn't just spill over the levees; it passes beneath them, and up through the ground, when it becomes supersaturated with water.

In Boston's Big Dig project, they created a lot of slurry walls, deep into the earth. I wonder how expensive it would be to build the levees not just up but deep down as well. Or even if that could help.

I know I owe someone an h/t for this, but I forget who. I've had the article open for a while.

Blogging Aid Auctions End Tonight
— Ace

My Pet Jawa's web-designer will give web-designs to the two highest donors, and Mu.Nu's own stern dictator Pixy Misa will bring in the top two donors on to the Mu.nu domain.

Kinda cool.

And... Defense Tech is trying to bundle $5000 in donations. Noah himself has already kicked $1000 into the kitty.

Da Goddess Loses a Friend To Katrina: A touching tribute.

US Has Three Times The Oil of Saudi Arabia, Locked In Shale
— Ace

Might be time for a shale-oil Manhattan Project.

The trouble is politics. The left makes noises about our dependency on foreign sources of oil, but what they're really against is oil, period, no matter what its source. Indeed, they seem to hate domestic producers more than foreign ones.

After all, domestic producers kill buffalos and use their horns for drill-bits (or something) and also donate to Republicans.

There's also the libertarian strain in economics which says, dogmatically I think sometimes, that we can never favor an industry with government support.

But right now there's an anti-competitive cartel selling us most of our oil, and for the market to truly work, there needs to be some viable competition. And that competition really can't come into being with the cartel willing and able to lower prices to drive them into bankruptcy if there should ever be serious investment in this technology. And then raise those prices, once again, after the competitive threat has been eliminated.

New York Giants Starters Edge NE Patriots' Second String
— Ace

Whoo-hoo! If you're a Giant fan, this is great news. If we play the second-stringers of a quality team, we can manage to just barely beat them.

In other good news:

* Despite rumors to the contrary, the Giants do in fact seem to have at least five men who claim to be offensive linemen. There were fears that the Giants would actually fail to field any offensive linemen at all, lining up five men short up front.

Not so. We do have linemen. Although it does sometimes seem as if there's absolutely no one blocking up front, you can check the tape-- there are guys there with lineman's numbers, letting pass-rushers right by them like skittish matadors.

* Back-up quarterback Matt Tim Hasselback (sorry, got the Brothers Hasselback confused, I'm told) continues to dominate in all QB skills -- scrambling, running for yardage when receivers are covered, throwing the ball away to avoid a sack -- except for the minor skill of actually competing a forward pass for more than five yards. He also occasionally seems to have trouble handing off the ball.

But these are minor quibbles. Great job, Matt Tim! You are the quarterback of the future -- after we have nanotech bionic implants improving arm strength and accuracy by computer control.

* It's very annoying that one of NE's running backs in named "Pass." This leads to commentators saying things like "Flutie to Pass again," and then seeing a guy run right up the middle with the ball after a hand-off. "Pass for three yards" (after a short run), etc.

It will get very confusing on draws. "Brady drops back to pass, no, it's a draw-fake, now Brady goes to Pass."

I kinda hope he gets cut, just because his name bothers me.

The Patriots have been my back-up favorite team for a while. Hey, it's not just bandwagoning; I lived in Boston for a while.

Usually I switch over to the Patriots after the first five games of the season, after the Giants have proven themselves hapless once again.

I think I'm switching over this year before the first snap of the regular season.

Hey, they've got Doug Flutie. Everyone loves Doug Flutie. I don't know of anyone who doesn't like Doug Flutie, except maybe an anti-semite like Cedarford.

Not that Flutie's Jewish. But real anti-semites don't bother themselves with such nettling distinctions.
