Super Bowl Poetry Contest Results!
— Dave In Texas

Ok, IÂ’ve painstakingly analyzed the entries, and after diligent consideration and waiting as long as I could for one stinking bribe (your integrity is secure. either that or who would waste a bribe on this silly contest? I take it back, youÂ’re all a den of vipers!),

Anyway IÂ’ve decided to post the results. Haiku was the most popular choice, which is quite consistent with the AoSHQ LifeStyle™

Michael Jackson(???) May Sing Late Pope's Prayers
— John From WuzzaDem

Am I the only one who thinks this might not be the best PR move for the Catholic Church?

Pop star Michael Jackson could sing some of the prayers written by the late Pope John Paul, the head of the music company coordinating the project said on Monday.
...

"We have been contacted by people close to Michael Jackson who have expressed interest and we are thinking about it," Moscati said.

He dismissed the recent controversy surrounding Jackson, who is living in Bahrain after a Californian court acquitted him of child molestation charges last June.

"He has been cleared of all charges," Moscati said.

"As a celebrity he is perhaps a bit remote from the teachings contained in the Pope's prayers. But if he can help us put together a group of singers that fulfil the criteria of the project then we'll study the proposal," he said.

Yeah, that's why I was thinking they might not have a good match. Because Jackson is a celebrity.

Still Not Quite Back Yet
— Ace

Still in NYC, waiting for a call (boring details). Should be in Boston and back blogging by 7 or so tonight. Until I jump on the bus, I'll manage a few posts, but this computer is very slow and doesn't seem to want to post much.

Thanks for your patience, and thanks to everyone for posting in my absence.

I'd wanted to start a flamewar thread on Friday, but the time just got away from me. Anyone up for it?

Muslims Protest Superbowl Results

Beh, I watched for the commercials and I was sorely disappointed this year. Only the FedEx caveman one made me laugh.

Iraqi WMD Tapes?
— Ace

Hope springs eternal:

The captured files of the Iraqi intelligence service, still mostly untranslated, could shed light on what did happen to Saddam's WMD.

John Loftus, a former Justice Department prosecutor, said a civilian contractor who has been among those examining the Mukhabarat files has found audiotapes of meetings in Saddam's office where WMD was discussed. The contractor, a former military intelligence analyst, will make the tapes public Feb. 17 at a conference sponsored by Intelligence Summit, a private group that Mr. Loftus heads.

Mr. Loftus wouldn't disclose the identity of the contractor in advance of the conference, but said his tapes have been verified by the National Security Agency. "This isn't a smoking gun. It's a smoking cannon," he said.

Those who have bet their political futures that Saddam had no WMD may be starting to sweat.

Thanks to Ogre Gunner.

Returning Troops Need to Cool Their Jets
— LauraW.

They're dying in motorcycle accidents.

Troops say the bikes fill the adrenalin void they left behind in the war zone.

"Riders who have been in accidents have told us that it's the legal crack cocaine," said J.T. Coleman, a civilian spokesman for the Army's Combat Readiness Center in Fort Rucker, Ala., which tracks accidents among soldiers. "They say it gives them the same adrenaline rush they get driving their tank through Baghdad or whatever."

More troops have died in motorcycle accidents than in Afghanistan.

A Marine told me (last Summer while on leave) that he was urged not to drive at all, because so many young Marines had been lost stateside to drunken or reckless driving.

CNN: Spineless Bastards
— WunderKraut

So I am reading CNN today. No shock there. I tend to start my day reading the headlines there.

I clicked on the continuing saga of the Mohamed cartoons and the "Religion of Peace".

The article was about calls for British police to begin arresting Muslim demonstrators who have been advocating violence with such "Religion of Peace" standbys as:

Massacre those who insult Islam

Europe you will pay, your 9/11 will come

Yeah, that sounds like advocating violence to me. They should be locked up.

At the end of the article they had this little disclaimer:

To repeat my title, CNN: Spineless Bastards!

CNN has chosen to not show the cartoons out of respect for Islam.

Bull Shit! Respect for Islam my ass! Where was CNN when Christ was being dipped in urine? Where was CNN when the Virgin Mary was covered in elephant dung? Oh yeah, they reported on it, as they should have AND they showed a picture, as they should have.

So why not show the supposedly offensive cartoons of Mohamed? They reported on it, just like the dung covered Virgin Mary, but no pictures. They did not refrain from showing a dung covered Virgin Mary "out of respect for Catholics." Gee, I wonder why that is?

Double standard? What double standard?

For you poor CNN readers who can only imagine what vile images of Mohamed have sparked the riots and caused CNN not to publish them, here they are in all their glory.

So is CNN really that sensitive to Islam and not to Christianity? Or are they plain scared?

Also, just in case CNN changes things: here is the screen shot with their note about respect for Islam and here is the screen shot of the Dung Virgin Mary.

Halftime action: Red vs. Blue
— Feisty

At the Super Bowl party tonight, my goofyass friends decided to have some live entertainment: A Siamese Beta Fighting Fish match to the death! Nothing more ridiculous than a bunch of grownups gathered around a fishbowl, beers in hand, placing bets on fighting fish and screaming when they nip each other.

Siamese. Beta. Fighting. Fish! [By the end of regulation, Red was losing to Blue]

The Healing Hands of Husbands
— LauraW.

Women are immediately comforted by their husband's touch when under stress. No, really!

Married women under extreme stress who reach out and hold their husbands' hands feel immediate relief, neuroscientists have found in what they say is the first study of how human touch affects the neural response to threatening situations.

The soothing effect of the touch could be seen in scans of areas deep in the brain that are involved in registering emotional and physical alarm.

The women received significantly more relief from their husbands' touch than from a stranger's, and those in particularly close marriages were most deeply comforted by their husbands' hands, the study found.

Awww.
The scientists did not evaluate the health effects of snuggling, though anecdotal evidence indicates that men find it extremely painful.
