Bad News: Generic Democrats Will Beat Generic Republicans In November;
Good News: No Generic Candidates Are Actually Running

— Ace

In three up-for-grabs districts, "Generic Democrats" beat "Generic Republicans."

But when actual names are part of the poll question, the Republicans win.

No wonder Democratic candidates always avoid saying anydamnthing and just fill the air with a purple haze of gauzy gassbaggery. They're trying, as best they can, to be one of those "Generic Democratic Candidates" who always poll so well.

YouTube, The Internet Tubes, and Shared Culture
— Ace

I was just thinking about this regarding the Monk clip. And various other clips, like SNL's Narnia rap.

No one's watching the same shows anymore. But the Internet tubes allow everyone who's on the Net to at least share the interesting moments from every show.

I don't watch Conan O'Brien anymore, but when Triumph has another funny bit, I'm sure I'll hear about it. Eventually. When it's old, of course, but eventually.

Kaus discusses this. But I was thinking about it first.

And I wants me some credit for that.

Sheehan Abandons Fast In Favor of "Pizza Party For Peace"

Well, not officially, but that pizza on the table seems suspiciously within reach of the "fasting" yet chubbolicious St. Cindy.

Bush Proposes Timetable For Israel?
— Ace

So the Drudge headline blared last night-- that Bush had given Israel just one week to fight Hezbollah.

The sourcing for this claim is just speculation by an unnamed European diploweenie, though.

The US is giving Israel a window of a week to inflict maximum damage on Hizbullah before weighing in behind international calls for a ceasefire in Lebanon, according to British, European and Israeli sources.
The Bush administration, backed by Britain, has blocked efforts for an immediate halt to the fighting initiated at the UN security council, the G8 summit in St Petersburg and the European foreign ministers' meeting in Brussels.

"It's clear the Americans have given the Israelis the green light. They [the Israeli attacks] will be allowed to go on longer, perhaps for another week," a senior European official said yesterday. Diplomatic sources said there was a clear time limit, partly dictated by fears that a prolonged conflict could spin out of control.

I find it hard to believe Israel needed a "Green Light" to attack anyone when rockets were raining down on their city, or that Bush can somehow use the mighty power of diplomacy to persuade them to stop fighting when missiles are still killing their people.

Giuliani, Republican Nomination, Some Assembly Required
— Ace

73% of Republicans would find him "acceptable." Only 55% would find McCain "acceptable."

The poll doesn't seek to find partisans' first choice, necessarily, but which candidates they could bring themselves to support, even as a second or third choice. Giuliani, surprisingly, tops the list.

McCain and Guiliani are more or less tied as first-choices, but 45% of Republicans wouldn't find McCain "acceptable." Sounds about right. I think the only Republicans who like him are Lincoln Chafee, John Dean, and of course Rightwingsparkle. (Kidding...)

Cue the Clash.

Deep Purple Will Perform In Lebanon, Despite War
— Ace

What can we take from this?

1, Deep Purple are consumate performers who believe the show must go on, and their fans must be satisfied, even at the risk of their own lives;

or

2, Deep Purple is really having trouble getting gigs.

House Fails To Rally 2/3rds Support For Gay Marriage Amendment
— Ace

It's very simple.

A lot of people object to "imposing" a definition of marriage on the states, or passing substantive law in an Amendment (which, for reasons that aren't clear to me, they claim should not contain substantive law but rather only procedural law about the workings of the government).

So, once again:

Drop the language defining marriage.

Instead, write an amendment that states that no court shall have jurisdiction over the issue, nor the authority to impose any definition of marriage upon a state, nor interpret any constitutional provision, state or federal, as mandating such.

Call the bluffs of the people who claim they are in favor of "states' rights," and appease those who don't want an explicit "antigay" provision in the Constitution.

Such a hypthetical amendment does not take the power away from the states, but merely clarifies who has the power within the states to decide the issue, nor does it, by federal fiat, impose a national definition of marriage.

It could, and should, be passed, and then incorporated into the Constitution.

And then all of the dishonest gay marriage advocates will be left squealing and exposed as the disingenous brats they are.

Ultimately, they do want judge-imposed gay marriage. It's the only likely way to get gay marriage made the law.

Deny them that and make them work through the democratic process. If they can democratically persuade states to adopt gay marriage, fine.

But foreclose the judicial-fiat option by constitutional mandate.

PS, I think Congress could if it so chose, use its constitutionally-granted power to exclude this issue from decision by the courts. But Congress never seems ballsy enough to use that option, and the amendment route has the advantage of being popularly enacted by the people of the states (acting through their reps, etc.).

PPS, I'd love to see, say, John Kerry and Howard Dean contorting themselves to oppose such an amendment, arguing, essentially, that the people rely upon their judges, rather than their own votes, to decide major issues for them, and that such an amendment thereby denies them the right to have major decisions taken out of their hands and resolved by an antidemocratic judicial elite.

PPPS, if the Republicans don't do this, they're not serious on the issue, and merely want to rally conservatives in November.

Hezbollah Traps Its Human Shields, Blocking Them From Evacuation
— Ace

But remember -- it's all the Jews' fault.

The IDF has found that Hizbullah is preventing civilians from leaving villages in southern Lebanon. Roadblocks have been set up outside some of the villages to prevent residents from leaving, while in other villages Hizbullah is preventing UN representatives from entering, who are trying to help residents leave. In two villages, exchanges of fire between residents and Hizbullah have broken out.

Wait-- you want us to fight without all our protective meat-armor? Hey, we're Warriors of God and all, but we're not crazy Warriors of God. We're the kind of Warriors of God who hide in schools and bravely engage the enemy's most well-trained and technologically-advanced bar mitzvah parties.

Meanwhile... Gillerman says it's "Doomsday" if Hezbollah attacks Tel Aviv.

Thanks to JimW.

Andi Glenn
— Ace

As one of Snarky Bastards' commenters said: Sullivan has crawled so far up Glenn Greenwad's ass he now qualifies as an internal organ.

The "True Conservative" approvingly links the far-left Greenwad once every two days.

Old Andrew Sullivan obsession: "Christianists," "Michelle Malkin conservatives"

New Andrew Sullivan obsession: intestinal polyps; the lack of WiFi reception in Glenn Greenwad's duodenum

Get a room, guys. Not that there's anything wrong with it, but neither of you is especially good-looking. If this were some hot man-on-man blog flirtation between, say, Nick Rhodes of Duran Duran and, I don't know, John Wesley ("Flash") Shipp, I might not mind it so much.

But it's not, so you really have to knock it off. It's like Jon Lovitz putting the moves on Balky from Perfect Strangers. Gay sex isn't necessarily wrong, but ugly gay sex is just nasty. There's something in Leviticus about it:

Man shall not lay down with a bald, chubby British George Costanza dude as if he were a woman; it is an abomination, and really not at all something we're interested in seeing.
