Did Barack "Spread the Wealth" Obama Just Blow the Election?October 16, 2008 11:37 AM ET | James Pethokoukis | Permanent Link | Print
No. Really. You're kidding me. Barack Obama actually told that Joe the Plumber guy that he wants to "spread the wealth around." What, did Obama just get done reading the Wikipedia entry on Huey "Share the Wealth" Long or something? Was he somehow channeling that left-wing populist from the Depression? Talk about playing into the most extreme stereotype of your party, that it is infested with socialists.
A while back I chatted with a University of Chicago professor who was a frequent lunch companion of Obama's. This professor said that Obama was as close to a full-out Marxist as anyone who has ever run for president of the United States. Now, I tend to quickly dismiss that kind of talk as way over the top. My working assumption is that Obama is firmly within the mainstream of Democratic politics. But if he is as free with that sort of redistributive philosophy in private as he was on the campaign trail this week, I have no doubt that U of C professor really does figure him as a radical. And after last night's debate, a few more Americans might think that way, too. McCain's best line: "Now, of all times in America, we need to cut people's taxes. We need to encourage business, create jobs, not spread the wealth around."
And by the way, I just noticed that the IBD/TIPP poll, the most accurate in 2004, has McCain down by just 3 points. If the contest is perceived by the voters as a contest between a wealth redistributor and a wealth creator, then it could be a long night come Nov. 4.
I'll leave the last bit of the post -- Gallup's findings on how many Americans share Obama's passion for spreading the wealth -- for your click.
To return this to the bone I'm gnawing on: Sure would be nice to connect up Obama's "spread the wealth" philosophy with the wealth-spreading of Fannie and Freddie, by making good-credit Americans subsidize and guarantee the risky mortgages of bad-credit Americans, thus leading to the current financial calamity.
Spreading the wealth sure does work gangbusters, eh?

Cool Facts About Joe the Plumber start now!
When Joe the Plumber takes on the bad guys in an 80s video, he always wins the inevitable pipe wrench fight.-- Palin Fan
INCITEmarsh--
Joe the Plumber went to the finest plumbing school in America. His major was, no surprise, Plumbing. His minor? Skullfucking.
I tried to minor in that but the labs were brutal.

— Open Blog Just in time for Halloween. When you thought that witch hunts and public stonings were the thing of the past (or only seen in Pakistan and Iran), our great media and their democrat overlords whipped out the torches and pitchforks to persue their arch enemy: regular Joe conservatives. It was bad enough when they went after Sarah Palin. Now, it's Joe the Plumber.
As soon as Joe became a de facto spokes person for all of the regular Joe conservatives, the media decided he had to be investigated as if was actually running for public office. As a Republican, of course. Democrats get a free pass.
What do they find first?

That video about dems causing the sub prime crisis finally turned one of my undecided sisters to vote McCain.
Yes we need another one like that from the 527s.

— Ace I believe it was a PUMA -- sorry, forget who, I just know it was one of the new posters -- who suggested this. Before Joe the Plumber.
Uhhbama is useless without a teleprompter, and when he's not thinking very hard, he slips and goes with his easiest answers, which happen to be his real answers, what he actually believes. He slips into socialist and hard left cant when he's not paying strict attention.
Let's have an Army of Joe Wurzelbachers. Since Palin, he's the only good news we've had.
Credit: I'm told the poster who suggested this is named HowtoDefeatBarackObama. Which is pretty ironic, when you think about it.
His parents pretty much set him on his career path from birth, huh? Kinda like naming your daughter Krystyl.

Joe the Plumber [Byron York]I don't know anything about Joe Wurzelbacher, but I just have one bit of advice. If you have anything in your past that you're not proud of — a messy divorce, a DUI, an unpaid bill, an indiscreet comment, whatever — be prepared for it to become public knowledge. The lefty blogosphere, along with allies in the press, will see to that.
And not just the lefty blogosphere, my tipster ads.
He got "uppity." He's a middle class tradesman who dared to express a political opinion disfavorable to the hard left. Obviously, they will have to destroy him -- how can they save him if they do not destroy him?
Some people just don't know what's best for them. And some people just will never appreciate how much you've done for them -- digging into their past, calling up old girlfriends, smearing their reputation -- in order to save them from the hellhole that is middle class America.
Once this uppity prole has been decimated and returned, chastened, to his proper position -- leadership from above, confidence from below -- and, say, some nasty dirt has been spread about him based on an affair or the like, he can take great comfort in the promise that, under President Obama, sexuality is sacred.
Politico Officially More Interested in Joe Wurzelbacher's Unpaid Back-Taxes Than Senate Candidate Al Franken's: Shock.
True: James--
What they don't get is that we're not rallying behind Joe the Plumber the man, we're rallying behind Joe the Plumber the idea. You can destroy the man, but the idea will only get stronger.
Just like Batman.

— Open Blog Out of everything said at the debate last night, the thing that kept going around and around in my mind was Senator Obama's claim that "only 2% of small businesses" would be affected by his plan to raise taxes on incomes of $250,000 or more. As if this had no real impact on the growth of small businesses or the number of people employed.
Small businesses are responsible for 80% of the job creation in the United States every year. While many small businesses only employ the owner, there are literally millions of small businesses that employ 1 to 499 employees. That's the cut off for small businesses that Sen. Obama would like to re-define. He wants to classify single owner, single employee businesses as "not small businesses as we invision them". Exactly what else should they look like if not someone working for themselves? Isn't that the American Dream?
Of course, Sen. Obama's entire purpose is to whittle down this number in the Public's mind so that when he talks about raising taxes he and we can pretend that it isn't really that big of a deal. Well, if it isn't that big of a deal, why do it at all?

Pro-American...check. Pro-border enforcement....check. Unapologetic about Iraq? Oh hell yes. Snarky at the media...you bet. And there's more.
One disturbing fact...he likes Matt Damon's movies. Perhaps he's just being polite.
All it needs is a tag line at the end and it would be good to go as an ad reminding people why they are conservatives. My suggestion..."I'm Zombie Reagan and I approve this message".

— DrewM In this case that means....Justice John Paul Stevens.
Ohio’s top election official has asked the Supreme Court to put on hold a federal judge’s order requiring steps to verify the voter registration rolls across the state, arguing that the order had “destabilized” the election situation just three weeks before voters go to the polls. An application for stay (Brunner v. Ohio Republican Party, et al., 08A332) was filed Wednesday night with Justice John Paul Stevens, who handles emergency matters from the Sixth Circuit....The application contended that the order may encourage a flood of lawsuits across the nation, disrupting the election process and threatening to require many voters to cast provisional ballots, thus perhaps deterring them from voting.
Justice Stevens may act without asking state GOP officials to respond, or wait until there is a response. He also has the option of sharing a decision with his Court colleagues, or acting alone.
I'll leave all the big headed legal stuff to Ace or Gabe but simply point you to Ace's earlier rundown on this case what the Ohio Secretary of State is trying to pull off.
