Greenpeace Founder Condemns "Pop Environmentalism" [dri]
— Open Blog

Patrick Moore, co-founder of Greenpeace and its leader for 15 years, is critical of the environmental organization’s negative stand on nuclear power. He believes that Greenpeace is throwing the baby out with the bathwater by lumping together all things nuclear as “evil”. Moore states that although nuclear weapons may be wrong, nuclear power is not and in fact it is much more economical than gas, wind, and solar power. Furthermore, advances in nuclear recycling technology now reduce waste products by over 90%.

That's why I left Greenpeace: I could see that my fellow directors, none of whom had any science education, were starting to deal with issues around chemicals and biology and genetics, which they had no formal training in, and they were taking the organization into what I call "pop environmentalism," which uses sensationalism, misinformation, fear tactics, etc., to deal with people on an emotional level rather than an intellectual level.

Moore believes that we are entering into a "nuclear renaissance" because there is such an aggressive push for nuclear power plants worldwide. In the US alone there are 32 plants on the drawing board and 15 either have or will apply for their operating licenses by the end of this year.

Full Fucking Circle, Baby: Newest Member of the Vast Right Wing Conspiracy? Hillary. Rodham. Clinton.
— Ace

I caught this quote earlier but I didn't put 2 and 2 together.

But yeah, liberal Obama partisans are now accusing Hillary as acting as a catspaw for the Republican Party.

And you know what that makes her, doncha?

Oh my, all this sweet, sweet irony is going straight to my ass.

But I just can't stop myself. It's deeeelicious.

The Academy: The Vigorous Arena of Ideas, At Least Those Which Are Pre-Approved as Inoffensive and Non-"Threatening"
— Ace

Silly:

A satirical response to a feminist publication at Colorado College has landed the college and two of its students in the middle of a fierce debate over freedom of speech.

Chris Robinson and another student at the Colorado Springs institution decided to print "The Monthly Bag" after seeing copies of a feminist and gender studies newsletter, "The Monthly Rag," in restrooms around campus.

The edition of "The Monthly Rag" that prompted action included an announcement for a talk on feminist pornography, information on gender-bending practices, and a tidbit about a myth involving male castration. According to Robinson, it was representative of what appears every month.

In response, Robinson and a friend created their flier, which provided tips on chainsaw etiquette, detailed a sexual position from Men's Health magazine and provided trivia about a sniper rifle — what Robinson called information for the stereotypical macho man.Staff members removed The Bag within hours of receiving complaints that the publication was threatening.

"It was a serious concern that this thing was posted anonymously and included in bold print the performance characteristics of a sniper rifle," president Richard Celeste said. "I had to take that as a threat."

The authors appeared before a conduct committee in March and were found guilty of violating the campus conduct code. In lieu of punishment, they were ordered to host a public forum on the issues raised in the incident.

A letter from Mike Edmonds, vice president for student life at Colorado College, to Robinson on March 25 called the problem "the juxtaposition of weaponry and sexuality."

...

"We quickly determined this was one of the worst cases of the year," said Adam Kissel, director of FIRE, because the parody publication was singled out. "It's such an obvious double standard. The fact that 'The Monthly Rag' mentions male castration alongside an announcement for a feminist porn activist provides the same juxtaposition they're claiming for Robinson of violence and sexuality."

...

At the conduct hearing in March, Robinson and other students raised concerns about the offensiveness of The Monthly Rag. Roberts dismissed those complaints.

"There's a difference between material that is 'offensive' ... versus material that demonizes or threatens or belittles groups of people," Roberts said.

Here's a PDF of the offending flier.

The "threatening" quote about the sniper rifle's performance?

"Did You Know...??

The Barrett .50 Caliber sniper rifle has an effective range of 2000 meters?"

That's threatening and "demonizing," but the feminist newsletter's fantasies about male castration is just good old fashioned debate.

Two balls good, no balls better.

Isn't the academy supposed to promote truth? Then why not tell the truth: There are very different rules for different people. Why the constant lying about rules which are ostensibly objective and apply to all equally?

The constant dishonesty over idiocy like this cannot help but be corrosive and promote a general atmosphere of dishonesty. If every student at the college knows the goddamned administration is lying on a daily basis, why should they not lie and cheat themselves?

Thanks to Alice H.

Thanks to DPUD for tracking that blog down for me. He's got another Around the Moronosphere in 80 IQ Points up, which I heartily recommend to Pennsylvanians and small-town folk all over.

Just have your children help you out with the bigger words.

Fresh Obama Nonapology!: I'm sorry you're too stupid to understand what I meant.

CNN's Balanced Coverage Includes Three Panelists Who All Claim Obama Didn't Mean What He Obviously Meant:

Bonus points to Jack Cafferty for likening the same economic desperation that drives Pennsylvanians to Jesus to the poverty that drives Saudis to Al Qaeda:

Actually, Jack Cafferty and Jeffrey Toobin both get doubleplus bonus points for first claiming that Obama never meant to imply that economic privation drives people to Jesus, firearms and xenophobia, and then immediately adding "But Obama's right, economic privation does drive people to Jesus, firearms, and xenophobia."

Ummm.... Jack and Jeffey, I know you're really super-smart guys, being on TV and all, but I'm afraid if this is as "simple" and "obvious" as you assert, you're going to have to choose between the defenses 1) he didn't mean anything so patently offensive and absurd and 2) but by the way he's 100% dead-bang balls-on right.

Fair and balanced, CNN! I love how they focus almost exclusively on the "bitterness" remark (just as Our Lord and Savior Barack Obama decreed,, so it was heralded, so it shall be) and also also accept, entirely uncritically, Obama's explanation that when he said that small-town Americans are driven to xenophobia and hatred of outsiders, he meant that as a good thing.

Newt Gingrich ain't havin' it.

The CNN cocksuckers all claim it's "so simple" and obvious what Obama meant, except they all seem to miss the actual meaning: That were it not for economic desperation, no American would choose to "cling to religion or guns." As Gingrich notes, it's quite possible -- perhaps even likely -- that Americans believe in God, and in the right to self-defense, out of rational conviction and not merely because they're too poor and stupid to have anything else of value.

You Believe This Shit? Video of Hillary playing the elitist card against Obama -- and successfully.

Is there another person on the face of the earth Hillary could call an elitist without exploding in a fiery ball of spontaneous irony?

Incidentally, the press is focusing on "bitterness" because that's mostly what Hillary is focusing on.

They're ignoring the critique made by conservatives, Newt Gingrich, and John McCain.

So you tell me: Are they ignoring the real issue here because they simply are unwilling to credit a non-liberal as offering a legitimate take?

Or are they so isolated in the liberal cocoon they're not even aware that a critique exists apart from Hillary's?

What's more likely? And which is worse?

Redneck Rampage Round-Up Redux
— Ace

I've been putting this off but here goes.

Obama's explanation, Take 2:

"Somethin' that everyone knows is true."

His claim here is clever: That he didn't mean people "cling" to their religion and guns and hatred of people who don't look like them because they're bitter due to being economic dead-enders; no, what he meant was that because people feel their government doesn't work, they turn to those institutions that do work, like church, and family.

And... guns?

And... hatred of immigrants and swarthy types that ain't quite white?

As clever as the first part of this claim is, he didn't mention "family" at all in his initial remarks, and it's daft to characterize guns as a "tradition" that people turn to and lean in on in difficult times. I mean, yes, sure, guns are good for self-defense and hunting, but no one loses a job and then turns to his shotgun and says "Baby, I could use a hug."

And it makes no fucking sense whatsoever to claim xenophobia, virulent nativism and racism are "traditions" and "institutions" that "work" even when government fails us -- "traditions" and "institutions," incidentally, on a par with religion.

Is Obama really trying to sell me that bullshit? That when he seemed to be denigrating small-town Americans as shoeless simpletons waving their guns and crosses in the air, as well as their "Mexicans, and Irish, Go Home!" placards, he was really praising them for doing so, for falling back on the wholesome religion, and wholesome hatreds, that sustain them through dark times?

A clever enough answer to satisfy the New York Times, of course, but they are the Paper of Record Retard, so it's not exactly a tough sale there. Tom Maguire notes in this link-and-analysis rich rundown that the New York Times' original write-up on the contretemps read thus:

MUNCIE, Ind. — Senator Obama on Saturday rebutted criticism that has enveloped his campaign over a comment he made last Sunday that many working-class voters are angry and bitter over economic conditions in America, and he told an audience here that his words were not meant to be insulting.

Many dispirited voters believe politicians will not solve their problems, Mr. Obama argued, so they base their votes on issues like religion, gun rights or same-sex marriage rather than voting for their economic interests.

Note the lack of a "cling to religion and guns" quote, or cling to suspicions of people who don't look like them -- the Times simply reports Barack Obama's spin as to what he meant as what was actually, factually said.

Um, that is egregious bias. There is a live and real and legitimate dispute over his meaning, and in fact the record itself is not on Obama's side. To lede the story accepting his claim as to what his statements meant as dispositive is not reportage, it is the New York Times simply acting as an unpaid campaign committee for Obama.

However, the New York Times has since at least elevated the "cling to religion and guns" quote from the buried-past-the-jump last-few-paragraphs position to the second paragraph, so at least NYT readers can now at least read for themselves the actual language in question before immediately deciding Barack Obama is right and most Pennsylvanians resemble "Blaster" from Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome, except that he's a raccoon-huntin' moonshine-runner, and oh yeah, he also has Kuato from Total Recall growin' out of a neck-boil.

And except Kuato doesn't have ESP, he has ESR, Extra-Sensory Retardation. His stupidity extends all the way to the Astral Fucking Plane, yo.

(Incidentally, Blaster would have Kuato lanced at the vet (the vet takes chickens in barter, as well as gold filings ripped out of the mouths of murdered city folk) except he needs the extra disability check he gets off his semi-sentient neck boil every month to fund his meth-lab. Plus, Kuato can psionically play a mean washboard in Blaster's combination Jug-band/KKK Chapter.)

Much more below the fold. This post sort of got out of hand.

The KosKids swamped the vote to drive me down the list, and boy howdy, did they succeed. Yeah, some nitwit wrote a diary exhorting his fellow lunatics to drive me down and thus deny a conservative a "prominent" position on the list.

And what's the Daily Kos doing up that high, wink wink.
