Maverick: You Know What Needs To Be A Top Priority? Comprehensive Immigration Reform!
— DrewM

The walk back towards comprehensive reform and away from enforcement started a few weeks ago and now itÂ’s out for everyone to see.

With the nomination securely in hand, the straight talk is back (sorry, NY Times Link)

Senator Kennedy and I tried very hard to get immigration reform, a comprehensive plan, through the Congress of the United States,” he said. “It is a federal responsibility and because of our failure as a federal obligation, we’re seeing all these various conflicts and problems throughout our nation as different towns, cities, counties, whatever they are, implement different policies and different programs which makes things even worse and even more confusing.”

He added: “I believe we have to secure our borders, and I think most Americans agree with that, because it’s a matter of national security. But we must enact comprehensive immigration reform. We must make it a top agenda item if we don’t do it before, and we probably won’t, a little straight talk, as of January 2009.

We're going to secure the border by January 2009? Yeah. Let's be honest, we'll get promises to secure the border at some point but we'll get instant, right now amnesty/path to citizenship whatever you want to call it.

I can’t say I am surprised. Was anyone really buying that whole, ‘lesson learned, enforcement first’ happy talk during the primaries? He was barely able to keep the pretense up as it was.

Personally, I am glad Maverick is back and telling us what he really believes and wants. It makes it easier to not vote for him and ultimately itÂ’s better for him. No one was buying his conversion and he looked silly trying to sell it. Better we are all honest about what our choices are this November. In reality though, I am sure most people have factored McCain's true stance on immigration into their voting decision for awhile now.

Me? Unless someone promises to name John Bolton and the Stache of Death to a cabinet post, I am sticking with my gal Hillary even if she isn't on the ballot and doing it without any guilt.

Review: Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull *No Spoilers*
— Gabriel Malor

Better than Temple of Doom, not as good as Last Crusade. It has the same teeth-grinding attempts at humor as the former, but a better story and better acting...mostly. But the bottom line is: it's Indiana Freakin' Jones, of course you're going to see it and you're going to enjoy it even if for no other reason than you get to see him in action again.

This is a spoiler free review, but I do discuss some weaknesses in the filmmaking below. So, if you're like me and can't help but notice something and let it frustrate you after someone else has pointed it out, you might want to hold off 'til after you've seen the movie. more...

Democrats Lied, People Died: Congressman Admits Democrats "Stretched the Facts" About Ending the War
— Ace

Should they be brought up on murder charges as well?

Paul Kanjorski has an honesty problem.

More specifically, Paul Kanjorski's problem is that he was publicly honest about the intentional dishonesty of Congressional Democrats (and Democrat candidates) in the run-up to the 2006 election -- particularly with regard to the War in Iraq.

Watch the video below (a transcript follows):

Transcript:

"I'll tell you my impression. We really in this last election, when I say we...the Democrats, That if we won the Congressional elections, we could stop the war. Now anybody was a good student of Government would know that wasn't true. But you know, the temptation to want to win back the Congress, we sort of stretched the facts...and people ate it up."

Here's the vid.

Obama, Yes We Can! [dri]
— Open Blog

With all of the negativity and cynicism associated with this campaign season, it is refreshing to see the innocence of a true believer who totally gets Obama's inspiring message of hope and renewal. You can see it in his eyes, he truly believes that yes we can!

I don't think it's a dumb move on their part, find out what the customer wants, give it to them. Marketing 101.

Well, except that with a kid in college I might not feel like parting with the jack all that much.

Still. Faaaaack!

How Much Are Democrats Costing You at the Pump?
— Ace

Charles Schumer says that if Bush can "merely" convince his "Saudi friends" we'd reap great rewards -- an extra million barrels per day would save Americans $0.62 per gallon in gas.

But: ANWR would provide one million barrels per day at a generally agreed-upon basement minimum.

Charles Schumer claims that ANWR would at most save Americans one penny per gallon in gas.

Is Saudi oil magical?

Or is it just caribou that are magical?

McCain Rejects And Denounces Rev. Hagee
— DrewM

Kind of inevitable after the whole "Hitler was a hunter" thing.

And making lemonade out lemons, McCain uses his statement to remind people about Obma and Wright.

Obviously, I find these remarks and others deeply offensive and indefensible, and I repudiate them. I did not know of them before Reverend Hagee's endorsement, and I feel I must reject his endorsement as well. I have said I do not believe Sen. Obama shares Reverend Wright's extreme views. But let me also be clear, Reverend Hagee was not and is not my pastor or spiritual adviser, and I did not attend his church for twenty years. I have denounced statements he made immediately upon learning of them, as I do again today

Is Hagee really a big deal in evangelical circles? Personally, I wouldn't recognize the guy if I ran him over on the street but as a lapsed Papist I am not in the demo he was supposed to help with. More importantly (or frighteningly), does this make it more necessary or likely for McCain to put Huckabee on the ticket?

Failed Exeter Bomber Is An Animal Rights Activist A Recent Muslim Convert
— Dave in Texas

He was locked in a restaurant bathroom with two more nail bombs.

Officers at the scene had to break in to the bathroom, where they found him bloodied and with facial burns (awww). Some geniuses speculated he might have been an animal rights activist and was planning to bomb a nearby business that tests products on animals.

Uh, yeah.

Authorities have since determined he is a white Muslim convert, and are investigating to determine if he has any ties to Islamic radicals. Which I'm thinkin is gonna be a pretty short investigation.

McCain Unloads On Obama Over New GI Bill Of Rights
— DrewM

Obama took a shot at McCainÂ’s opposition to Jim WebbÂ’s proposed updating of the GI Bill of Rights on the floor of the Senate today and McCain came out swinging in a statement released shortly after.

First Obama.

I respect Sen. John McCain's service to our country. He is one of those heroes of which I speak. But I can't understand why he would line up behind the President in his opposition to this GI bill.
I can't believe why he believes it is too generous to our veterans. I could not disagree with him and the President more on this issue. There are many issues that lend themselves to partisan posturing but giving our veterans the chance to go to college should not be one of them.

The McCain camp apparently saw that as an opportunity to smack Obama around a bit.

It is typical, but no less offensive that Senator Obama uses the Senate floor to take cheap shots at an opponent and easy advantage of an issue he has less than zero understanding of. Â… Unlike Senator Obama, my admiration, respect and deep gratitude for America's veterans is something more than a convenient campaign pledge. I think I have earned the right to make that claim.

Â…And I take a backseat to no one in my affection, respect and devotion to veterans. And I will not accept from Senator Obama, who did not feel it was his responsibility to serve our country in uniform, any lectures on my regard for those who did.

Plays vet card? Check. Indirectly calls Obama a slacker punk? Check. This race may not be so bad after all, once you get passed the grim reality one of them will be President at the end of it.

I am glad to see McCain hit Obama and point out his lack of experience on military matters but I think he needs to be careful in touting his own service. It’s a fine line between silent hero and John Kerry’s ‘reporting for duty’ spiel. That said, if Obama wants to try and attack McCain’s vet credentials, he better leave it to surrogates like Webb. Though that effort hasn’t worked out so well either.

Once last thing MaverickÂ…stop making reference to your memory of hearing about the bombing of Pearl Harbor. We know youÂ’re old, stop pointing it out.
