GOP Senators Come Through And Block Climate Change Legislation

Score one for sanity. For now.

Senate Republicans on Friday blocked a global warming bill that would have required major reductions in greenhouse gases, pushing debate over the world's biggest environmental concern to next year for a new Congress and president.

Democratic leaders fell a dozen votes short of getting the 60 needed to end a Republican filibuster on the measure and bring the bill up for a vote, prompting Majority Leader Harry Reid to pull the legislation from consideration.

The Senate debate focused on bitter disagreement over the expected economic costs of putting a price on carbon dioxide, the leading greenhouse gas that comes from burning fossil fuels. Opponents said it would lead to higher energy costs.

Â…The bill would have capped carbon dioxide coming from power plants, refineries and factories, with a target of cutting greenhouse gas emissions by 71 percent by mid-century.

"It's a huge tax increase," argued Republican Senate leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, a prominent coal-producing state. He maintained that the proposed system of allowing widespread trading of carbon emissions allowances would produce "the largest restructuring of the American economy since the New Deal."

Of course not all Republican Senators were opposed to a massive tax hike and regulation of the economy.

The 48-36 vote fell short of a majority, but Democrats produced letters from six senators—including both presidential candidates Barack Obama and John McCain—saying they would have voted for the measure had they been there.

Now that the popcorn fest that was the Democratic Party primary is over the cold reality is starting to set in that the 2008 election is going to suck no matter how you slice it.

I did a post on this last year on my old moron-blog, if you'd like to read more. Here is the text of the message Gen. Eisenhower wrote, but thankfully never read:

Our landings in the Cherbourg-Havre area have failed to gain a satisfactory foothold and I have withdrawn the troops. My decision to attack at this time and place was based on the best information available. The troops, the air and the Navy did all that bravery and devotion to duty could do. If any blame or fault attaches to the attempt, it is mine alone.

Jack Lucas, USMC, RIP

The youngest man ever to receive the Medal of Honor since the American Civil War.

Mr. Lucas passed away this morning at age 80. This Marine lied his way into the service at age 14. At 17 (six days into that age), on Iwo Jima he shielded three fellow Marines from two grenades, one of which exploded and pushed 250 pieces of metal into his body.

I hollered to my pals to get out and did a Superman dive at the grenades. I wasn't a Superman after I got hit. I let out one helluva scream when that thing went off."

The Marines figured out his age before he deployed. They threatened to send him home. He said if they did, he'd just join the Army.

He sacrificed his body, to save his brothers. He lived a long life, we were fortunate to have him around. So many men who fought in this war are leaving us now. We're poorer for losing them, but there is a whole new generation of Marines who are with us now, who will be here long after we are gone, who carry on the finest traditions of the Marine Corps.

And has been said before, there is no greater love.

And why did he cave? Because of criticism from our bosom friends the Palestinians.

Many on the right of the political spectrum among America's Jews welcomed Obama's remarks at AIPAC, but the clarification of his position left several cold.

"The Orthodox Union is extremely disappointed in this revision of Senator Obama's important statement about Jerusalem," said Nathan Diament, director of public policy for the Union of Orthodox Jewish Congregations. He had sent out a release Wednesday applauding Obama's Jerusalem remarks in front of AIPAC.

"In the current context, everyone understands that saying 'Jerusalem... must remain undivided' means that the holy city must remain unified under Israeli rule, as it has been since 1967," Diament explained.

"If Senator Obama intended his remarks at AIPAC to be understood in this way, he said nothing that would reasonably lead to such a different interpretation."

Morton Klein, president of the Zionist Organization of America and another Jewish activist who had originally lauded Obama's statement, now called the candidate's words "troubling."

"It means he used the term inappropriately, possibly to mislead strong supporters of Israel that he supports something he doesn't really believe," Klein charged.

Gee, I just can't accept such a tendentious interpretation as possibly being true. This is the Risen Christ of Chicago we're talking about here after all.

Does this weakling moron think in advance about a single non-platitudinous burbling that comes out of his mouth?

I can't wait to see what promises he makes under pressure or to please his immediate audience and thereby binds the US.

Or, who knows, given his gassy stupidity, maybe none of his promises mean anything.

Either way, I don't see the point of sending this imbecile nancyboy to negotiate with the fucking Girl Scouts nevermind determined terrorists.

I can see that the Dems already miss the steady hand of Lt. John Kerry at the helm of their windsurfer.

Spoof of Alien Vid?

I'm not following this, but it looks similar to the other "alien vid," at least in setting and film type. So I'm thinking they just froze a frame of that one and added this "alien" to it.

I don't know. It's kind of funny.
