— LauraW The police want you to stay out of Oniontown.
Some teenagers decided it was a good idea to visit a small upstate NY town and make fun of the poverty and general squalor there, then post this video of their 'Adventures' on the internet.
But Oniontown residents, while poor, are 'American-poor,' and apparently do have internet access.
As well as a sense of shame and humiliation.
State police at Dover said two teenagers from Mahopac drove into Oniontown Monday and were attacked by a group of youths throwing stones. A female passenger suffered injuries to her head and face, and the male driver also was injured. Both were treated for their injuries at a local hospital and released.
Wonder what these kids from Mahopac were up to?
Police said this is not the first time visitors have been attacked.Videos depicting the neighborhood in a derogatory light, posted on the Internet site YouTube, have attracted visitors.
"The biggest recommendation at this point is for everybody to stay out of there," Investigator Erich Schaefer said. "Anybody that doesn't belong there, anybody that's not a resident, just stay out of Oniontown."
My emphasis.
In another unknown news organization's take on the story, Mahopac residents expressed anger and shock that the kids from their town were attacked by Oniontown residents.
OK; slumming just to feel good about yourself is shitty, but harmless to others.
It might even be a helpful family exercise when your kids get spoiled and demanding, as long as you keep the visit brief and emphasize that you're showing them what real life can be like, how good they have it and essentially to put a cork in it about how 'everybody else' has a whoosie-gadget but them. I know a family that did that, and it worked.
But what these kids did, turning it into a party and posting it on the net....there's an important qualitative difference here. A technological leap in the Art of Assholery, if you will.
YMMV.

— DrewM Of all the holidays this is my favorite. It's the only one I have a ritual for...I read the Declaration of Independence. It never fails to move me.
That's nice and all I suppose but for the real meaning of the day, check out 1,215 American heroes re-enlisting on July 4th in Baghdad.
Simply amazing.

— LauraW Over at Gateway Pundit:
The Colombian Government released video today that was taken during the rescue of the 15 hostages held by FARC this week. You can see the captives with the hands bound boarding the helicopter for what they thought was a flight to a different FARC camp. Then you see the hostages reaction, including Ingrid Betancourt, on the helicopter after it was announced that they were free:
Too bad about the picture quality, but I guess they had other priorities, eh?
Also there, a video of John Murtha saying foolish things.
Who'd a thunk it.
Incidentally, Gateway Pundit was a blogging animal today. Keep on scrollin', it's all good. The Code Pink pinheads interrupted the Naturalization ceremony at Monticello today, and he has a clip of that, too.

— Ace Was this what the Founders had in mind when crafting the Second Amendment?
I'm thinking this is precisely what they had in mind.
A couple telephoned police in the middle of the night after finding a man in their basement covered head to toe in barbecue sauce."He told the officers that it was urban camouflage," said the homeowner.
...
The homeowners say they woke up to whistling sounds.
The husband grabbed his shotgun and headed toward the basement where he found the sauced-up intruder.
He held him at gunpoint until police arrived.
The guy told officers he covered himself in barbecue sauce because he wanted to hide from the government.
Thanks to Michael.

— Ace Let's just skip all the poison for the weird:

It's called the Doll's Eyes, which makes it even creepier.
If you eat it, cardiac poisons will give you a heart attack. But why on earth would anyone even think about eating that thing?
More poisonous plants here.
Thanks to Arthur.

— LauraW Chestnut keeps his throne.
Joey Chestnut reclaimed the top spot at the annual hot dog eating contest in Coney Island on Friday after first tying with archrival Takeru Kobayashi in a 10-minute chow-down and then beating him in a five-dog eat-off.
USA! USA!
Chestnut said he was mentally prepared to eat 70, but his body was pushing back during the competition; it didn't want to swallow fast enough. And it shouldn't want to. In fact, it's downright bad for your health, says Dr. Marc Siegel, a professor at New York University School of Medicine and Humorless Scolding.
"Hot dogs are extremely unhealthy, especially when eaten at high volume," he intoned, with a bitter, pinched face marred by the deep frown lines you'd expect to see on a typical killjoy prick. "They're really processed, they have high cholesterol and too much salt." DURRR.
And thanks to the quantities the competitors ate, they'll likely suffer nausea, bloat, headache, and possibly high blood pressure for several days as the body slowly digests the food.
"One is bad for you, five's worse and 50 is terrible," he said, tapping his finger on his framed-and-mounted MfO Degree (Master of the fuckin' Obvious) to emphasize his credibility.
Uh. That was mostly from the linked article. Mostly.
