Princess Caroline Still In The Running For NY's Vacant Senate Seat?
— DrewM

Her statement...

ALBANY, New York - Caroline Kennedy said she has withdrawn her name from consideration for the Senate seat being vacated by Hillary Clinton, in a statement released early Thursday morning.

"I informed Governor Paterson today that for personal reasons I am withdrawing my name from consideration for the United States Senate," the official statement read.

Unrelated...Much to my chagrin, I'm still not having sex with Judy Greer. That's my official statement on the matter.

Original Post:
The AP reports that not only is she not withdrawing, she's in it to win it.

After wavering briefly, Caroline Kennedy renewed her determination Wednesday to win appointment to the U.S. Senate seat once held by her slain uncle, Bobby Kennedy, a person close to the decision said.

After her surviving uncle, Sen. Edward Kennedy, suffered a seizure on Inauguration Day, Caroline Kennedy had misgivings about taking on the new job, the person said, speaking to The Associated Press on the condition of anonymity because he wasn't authorized to speak for Kennedy. Earlier in the day, The New York Times and New York Post reported that Kennedy had ended her monthlong bid to succeed Hillary Rodham Clinton, who was confirmed as secretary of state.

MSNBC also reported that a person close to Kennedy denied that she was out of the running.

As of now, the NY Post which broke the news of Kennedy's supposed withdrawal still has that story up.

Allah wonders if divine intervention is responsible for this changing story.

True to His Word, Obama Orders Issues Gitmo Closing Order Shortly After Taking the Oath of Office
— Dave in Texas

I think Gabriel was being purposefully fuzzy in his earlier thread on this. Obama says it's gonna happen "as soon as possible, but no later than one year from now".

Other upcoming Obama orders will include that the recession get itself righted sometime in March, but no later than Christmas of 2010, that we fully and completely nationalize the nation's healthcare system by sometime this February, or no later than 2013, and that NASA shall place an astronaut on the planet Mars this summer, or no later than September 2021.

I myself pledge to paint the new "guest room" by this weekend, no later than whenever we shut down Gitmo.

Correction/Apologies
— Ace

My original correction was a bit tentative as I didn't know the facts. I wrote that Jake Tapper had said --

Obama is the first President since Washington to step down into the presidency.

Having now read/searched the transcripts of ABCNews' inaugural day coverage, I can say that Tapper did not say this, or anything even close to this. He actually didn't say very much throughout the day, and it was all standard reportage. I didn't even see anything praising Obama at all.

In fact, a search for "George Washington" doesn't pull up a quote from anyone else, either.

He simply didn't say it, and I was slapdash to write that he had.

What probably happened is that someone interviewed said it, or it was said on another network. Drew really never sent this as a "tip," just as chatter in email as we seethed throughout the day, so he didn't work hard to pin down the time or precise details about it -- he didn't expect me to pull it out of an email and parade it around as a fact, and I shouldn't have done so. He was flipping through channels and remarking casually about the coverage, not in reporter/blog-tipping mode.

It's not Drew's fault, it's mine. And right now I'm working to correct this. I have reported something in error and it seems to be getting spread further. Not only am I embarrassed about getting it wrong, but Tapper really does try more than most to keep it fair.

As some have noted, and I thought myself at the time -- this really never sounded like something Tapper would say. You don't spend years working up a reputation as an impartial reporter just to piss it away indulging a Matthews-esque thrill up the leg puffery.

Princess Caroline Abdicates
— DrewM

If this is true, I'm guessing it's a face saving way for to avoid not being picked or does she have some sort of 'Geithner' problem?

Caroline Kennedy has told Gov. David Paterson that she is withdrawing her name from consideration to replace outgoing Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton in the U.S. Senate, The Post has learned.

Kennedy cited "personal reasons," according to sources.

Her stunning move comes as sources revealed that Paterson had intended to appoint her to the now-vacant seat today.

The 51-year-old Camelot daughter's decision removes the highest-profile name in the ring to step into Clinton's seat, as she departs after getting confirmed as President Obama's Secretary of State today.

Keep in mind the guy who wrote this story is the same guy who wrote a story two days ago saying it was Sweet Caroline, so who knows.

Update: The NY Times is running with it too so that's two sources. Very interesting.

Update 2: CNN says it's because she's worried about Uncle Ted. Yeah, I'm going to say not so much. The elder Kennedy has been ill for about 6 or 8 months, so why suddenly does that matter?

Just to be clear, the reason I'm not having sex with Judy Greer on a daily basis is because my grandmother died 30 years ago. What? It makes about much sense.

Jack Murtha...Sure, Send Those Guys At Gitmo To My District
— DrewM

I guess he thinks they'll fit in just fine with the rednecks and racists there. At least they aren't cold blooded murders like those Marines in Fallujah. Or something.

Rep. Jack Murtha, D-Pa., says he'd be willing to house prisoners from Guantanamo Bay in his congressional district if President Obama makes good on a plan to close the U.S. prison there.

As one of his first acts in office, the president circulated a draft Wednesday that would shut down Guantanamo Bay within a year.

Murtha only has a minimum security prison in his district. But he says he'd have no reservations about holding detainees there in a maximum security prison.

"Sure, I'd take 'em," said Murtha, an outspoken critic of the Iraq war. "They're no more dangerous in my district than in Guantanamo."

Murtha added that there was "no reason not to put 'em in prisons in the United States and handle them the way they would handle any other prisoners."

First of all, they are very dangerous in Gitmo. They certainly are to the guards. Second asshole, don't you think their terrorist buddies might, I don't know, try and break them out if they could get to the prison. It's not like that's never happened before (no the US isn't Afghanistan but it doesn't mean they won't give it a shot, does it?).

Dumb ass.

I'm guessing he sees earmark opportunities here. Of course we can't forget Murhta has already shown an affinity for criminals from the Mideast (as far as he knows).

Thanks to Ginger in the Biden thread for the heads up.
