Paul Harvey Signs off With His Final “Good Day.” (genghis)
— Open Blog

CNN (along with others) has the story.

”(CNN) -- Paul Harvey, the legendary radio host whose career sharing "the rest of the story" with listeners spanned more than 70 years, has died, according to ABC Radio Networks.”

“He was 90.”

“Harvey died at a hospital in Phoenix, Arizona, where he kept a winter home, said Louis Adams, a spokesman for the networks. He was surrounded by family members when he died, Adams said.”

“Known for his deliberate delivery and pregnant pauses, Harvey's broadcasts were heard on more than 1,200 radio stations and 400 Armed Forces networks and his commentaries appeared in 300 newspapers, according to his Web site.”

“He had been hosting his radio shows part-time for much of the past year, after recovering from physical ailments including pneumonia and the death of his wife, Lynne "Angel" Harvey in May 2008.”

The guy was simply an institution, and the precursor to what talk radio is today. I can remember times back to the early ‘70’s, as a little kid, listening to his broadcasts in my grandma’s kitchen. She’d have him on as she was preparing her usual fantastic fried chicken. I just always sorta’ associated one with the other. Was like a Sunday evening ritual. Now they’re both gone.

Rest in peace Mr. Harvey. YouÂ’ll be sorely missed.

(sorry for the personal stuff...just wanted to pay tribute))

Overnight Open Threadiness and Miscellany (genghis)
— Open Blog

Item #1: Rich Karlgaard at Edgelings writes about The Coming Blue State Collapse. Apparently heÂ’s convinced that somehow paying much higher taxes during a deep recession will somehow hurt whatÂ’s left of the economy. Hah! What a fool. Go leave snarky comments in his commenty thing.

Item #2: Taxation stories not your bag? HereÂ’s one about funbags: Breastfeeding While Driving Gets Woman a Ticket. Also while talking on her cell phone. This is an outrage of course. Why are hardworking Womyn-Americans being punished for multitasking? When confronted by the concerned motorist who ratted her out to the cops she had this to say in her own defense:

”'You want to pop your titty out and breastfeed this kid?”

Well played, madamÂ…well played indeed.

If funbags arenÂ’t your bag, IÂ’m pleased to announce that AceCorp Holding Company (parent group of AceCorp LLC) has expanded its line of products/services into the private entertainment industry. Find out more about it here.

Assorted disclaimers and announcements below the fold, along with my TPS report cover sheet.

It Has Come To Our Attention That Michelle Obama Has Nice Guns
— LauraW

Update: Not sure how I ended up with a dupe post.
Keeping them both I guess because they both have comments.
----------------------

I can't say I disagree. In fact, I mentioned it over at some other blog during the Inaugural balls when she was getting cut up for her fashion sense.

The media's long uninterrupted O-gasm continues apace:

How to get Michelle Obama's toned arms

The question we must ask ourselves; how does she get them? One can't help but notice that her figure exhibits no other evidence that she's a longtime gym rat.

We here at AOSHQ have been unable to search up any beauty articles in which women say Mrs. Obama inspired them to transform their lower halves into colossal spongiform pumpkins.

Look, I don't want to be mean to Michelle Obama about her looks. I want to be mean to the fawning press which has thrown all pretense of objectivity out the window. Unfortunately in order to do this, I have to point out things about her that the press ignores. This is tearing me up inside, but I have no choice.

Here's another one:

First lady bares her arms and a nation is awestruck

Only if by 'a nation' you mean a hyperventilating MSM that is looking for anything, anything nice to say about this woman's looks.

The MSM needs help creating new headlines celebrating Mrs. Obama's....erm, more striking features. We should help them out.
I'll kick it off:

You're Beautiful When You're Angry: How To Get Michelle Obama's Eyebrows

ps: I did a google image search using the term 'angry eyebrows' and Michelle's mug showed up all over the place.

Thanks to Slublog and Ace.

CPAC Livestream
— Ace

This is sort of why I don't know what the heck I'm doing here -- all this stuff is available wherever you are.

Here's the big speakers today, if you want to watch. CPAC runs pretty much on time, by the way.

12:30 is Ann Coulter.

1:00 -- only a half hour for Ann, five minutes of which will be her introduction and, strangely, the introduction of her introducer? -- is the CPAC blogger of the year award, being presented to Sweetness and Light. I will be on stage to hand over my tiarra. (No, not really.)

2:00 John Kyl, invited, I don't know if he's confirmed.

3:00 David Horowitz.

4:00 Ward Connelly.

5:00 Rush Limbaugh.

Bill Bennett: Watch Our Rhetoric; This is Not Socialism
— Ace

Bennett speaking right now, stating that we are not facing socialism but "left-wing Democratic catechism." Advises we call the thing by its proper name.

Well, it's certainly socialism-esque and trending that way still further.

His greater point, I suppose, is well-taken, and gets to that Weird Kid Eating Paste thing we need to look out for. And, perhaps, by calling Obama's liberalism "socialism," it diminishes people's aversion for socialism, the same as calling everydamnthing "racist" diminished the power of that word as well.

Hey, he said it. Don't beat up on me as a "coward."

Second Look at Romney?
— Ace

Something that I've been thinking, and I've heard repeated by a diverse range* of CPAC attendees -- Romney wasn't taken seriously enough and would, in the current economic situation, be a terrific president. And he could have ridden his financial chops, possibly, to a victory in 2008.

Good speech here. He's a bit Jekyll and Hyde, delivering a good speech and then a woeful one. But here he's the good Dr. Jekyll.

* "A diverse range" means like three or four people.

US Soldiers Party In Baghdad Nightclub
— DrewM

Even the most ardent war supporters admitted victory in Iraq wouldn't look like victory in WWII but thought they would know it when they saw it.

This may be what it look likes.

The American soldier stepped out of the Baghdad nightclub. In one hand, he clutched his weapon. In the other, a green can of Tuborg beer. He took a sip and walked over to two comrades, dressed as he was in camouflage and combat gear.

Inside the club Thursday night, U.S. soldiers of the 82nd Airborne Division ogled young Iraqi women who appeared to be prostitutes gyrating to Arabic pop music. A singer crooned soulfully through scratchy speakers to the raucous, pulsating beat -- an action that Islamic extremists have deemed punishable by beheading.

Twenty minutes later, several drunk men coaxed an American soldier to dance. He awkwardly shuffled his feet, wearing night-vision equipment and a radio, joining the women and boisterous young men in an Arabic chain dance around tables covered with empty beer bottles.

...Club manager Salah Hassan said Thursday's visit was not exceptional. "The Americans come here four or five times a week," he said. "They buy drinks and pay for them."

Others at the club said the soldiers had been there more than once. "I love the Americans," said Amal Saad, a petite young woman with blue contact lenses and thick red lipstick. "I like it when they come here. I feel so safe."

"Many times, I went with them in their Humvees," she added. "They took me to shops and bought me chocolates and gifts."

Now, there's a couple of problems with this.

First it likely violates a shit load of regulations (remember it took a special order from Gen. Odierno for the troops to have a beer during the Super Bowl and that was while on base). I'm guessing drinking off base while on patrol is going to land this guy in a pile of shit so deep he may not be clean for years. I'm betting this type of thing won't be happening again anytime soon.

Second, not every place in Iraq is likely as secure as this area and even in this type of area things can change quickly. I'd hate to see Americans killed or injured because they let their guard down.

All that said, this is stuff that was simply unimaginable during the dark days of 2006-2007. Unfortunately, too many people who said Iraq could never emerge from sectarian strife are in positions of high power today. Their lack of vision and commitment to the Iraq war does not bode well for their stewardship of America's national security.
