— Open Blog Item #1: Mike Florio of the Sporting News (via Yahoo Sports) discusses the rumored plans to outsource the Super Bowl to London. Mr. Florio then attempts to lay out the case for why this might not be a sure sign of Armageddon in 10 easy talking points. Some excerpts:
”5. Knowing that a Super Bowl is coming to London will give folks in England an incentive to learn more about the game. It will create natural interest in the sport in the years preceding the event, and it will help the sport take a chunk out of the obsession with soccer.”“9. In a roundabout way, it's the kind of gesture that could help other countries truly believe America doesn't look down its nose at other nations. By sharing our most prized sporting event with the rest of the world, the rest of the world might think, at least for a day, that we're not a bunch of jerks.”
He actually makes a couple of compelling points, but like everything else ejaculated by the MSM these days, somehow he finds a way to interject politics into a non-political article. But thatÂ’s how itÂ’s gonnaÂ’ be kids, now that weÂ’re living in the era of Pax Obama and the Age of Unicornius.
Link and article is swiped from Phil the News Junkie who has lots of other links for you to play with. Also, you can listen to his radio program via livestream each Sunday from 4-7 p.m. Pacific TimeÂ…link to that at the top of his page.
Item#2: CNN reports that during a recent seminar on domestic violence in Saudi Arabia, a judge participating in the seminar stated that ItÂ’s ok to slap your wife for overspending.
”(CNN) -- Husbands are allowed to slap their wives if they spend lavishly, a Saudi judge said recently during a seminar on domestic violence, Saudi media reported Sunday.”“Arab News, a Saudi English-language daily newspaper based in Riyadh, reported that Judge Hamad Al-Razine said that "if a person gives SR 1,200 [$320] to his wife and she spends 900 riyals [$240] to purchase an abaya [the black cover that women in Saudi Arabia must wear] from a brand shop and if her husband slaps her on the face as a reaction to her action, she deserves that punishment."
So I guess itÂ’s probably best to avoid buying the latest abaya from Chanel or Ralph Lauren. For most of you this story will have little meaning since the judge didnÂ’t mention anything about how inflatable sex toys should be treated.
Item #3: This story on the other hand may have a profound and immediate impact on your AoS lifestyle. From an AP story via The Philadelphia Enquirer Inquirer (thanks to Little Miss Spellcheck in the comments) comes this grim piece of news: Homeless in Maryland Get Hate-Crime Protection. ItÂ’s OK if you need to get up and walk away from the computer for a bit until the shaking subsides. Come back when you feel like youÂ’re able to digest the rest of the article.
”ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Maryland yesterday granted a new safeguard to its most downtrodden residents, becoming the first state in the nation to extend hate-crimes protection to homeless people. The bill signed by Gov. Martin O'Malley adds homelessness to the protected categories under Maryland's hate-crimes law, which allows prosecutors to seek tougher penalties for those who target people because of race, ethnicity, religion, and sexual orientation. California, Texas, and Ohio are considering similar bills, and legislation has been introduced in Congress.”
The article doesnÂ’t make clear what the enhanced penalties for hunting hobos the homeless are, but I imagine they might be pretty stiff. Like those you might get for poaching. LetÂ’s toss this in for shits nÂ’ grins:
”Brian Levin, director of the Center for the Study of Hate and Extremism at California State University-San Bernardino, said the law extended unprecedented protection to an increasingly vulnerable population. "The homeless are arguably the most victimized class, criminally, of anyone out there," Levin said.”
First of all: Dude, ever thought about changing the name of your organization so it makes a better acronym? Cause CSHE just isnÂ’t getting the job done my friend. As everyone knows, getting the catchy acronym is 90% of the job. Maybe here at Moron Central Command we can help you come up with something.

A unanimous Supreme Court ruled Monday the government has been overstepping the boundaries of identity theft legislation when targeting immigrants who use phony citizenship documents to acquire jobs.
Gotta love it.

— Open Blog USA Today reports the Darth Cheney has aligned himself with Rush Limbaugh over Colin Powell in the fight for the identity of Conservatism.
The tale of the tape:
Colin Powell: A self-described Republican and a right-of-center conservative who nevertheless supported Barack Obama for president and says:
"Americans are looking for more government in their life, not less."
Dick Cheney: An evil ultra-Reich wing fanatic who eats babies and rapes endangered pumas who says:
"If I had to choose in terms of being a Republican, I'd go with Rush Limbaugh. My take on it was Colin had already left the party. I didn't know he was still a Republican.""The suggestion our Democratic friends always make is somehow if you Republicans were just more like Democrats, you'd win elections. Well, I don't buy that. We win elections when we have good solid conservative principles to run upon."
I think it goes without saying that Dick just wants to shoot that Uncle Tom... er, sorry -- flashback to the Bush-era MSM meme -- that principled Conservative Powell in the face for pathologically racist reasons.
But I could be wrong. Is any other interpretation permissable possible?

— LauraW Youngster brainiac Mrs. Peel has a terrific post up on freedom.
I had an alarming conversation with a friend recently in which he staunchly defended smoking bans and Bloomberg-style health Naziism, because, he said, people canÂ’t be trusted to make their own choices about their health. And no matter what I said, he could not see the evil of his position, nor how the exact same reasoning could be used to, say, restrict the amount of time he spends playing video games.ThereÂ’s a Chesterton quotation I discovered recently (via the Anchoress):
The free man owns himself. He can damage himself with either eating or drinking; he can ruin himself with gambling. If he does he is certainly a damn fool, and he might possibly be a damned soul; but if he may not, he is not a free man any more than a dog.IÂ’m heartbroken and appalled at how few people, especially in my birth cohort, understand that quotation.
Quite pithy. You go read now.

— Open Blog Update on the tipline: For now just keep using the old gmail tipline at the bottom of the post. Something went screwy when I tried to get the new earthlink tipline up and running, so I deleted that account and will try to set it up again when I get some spare time. Thanks.
Some news niblets:
Item #1: A chemistry lesson is to be had over at Phil the News JunkieÂ’s pad. After watching the vid he has posted there, if you donÂ’t come away with a thourough understanding of how oxygen interacts with other elements then youÂ’re just the kind of moron weÂ’re looking for here. ItÂ’s sort of like the old Schoolhouse Rock animated shorts but updated with CGI and funnier.
Item #2: Gabe and others have already posted reviews of “Star Trek,” but Matt sends along one from last Wednesday by Dana Stevens at Slate. Stevens, who apparently has a day job at the NSA, subtly weaves current events into the review:
”Star Trek's vision of the future, as guided by creator Gene Roddenberry, was also a relic of its time, the age of NASA and the Cold War and Kruschev pounding his shoe on a podium at the United States. The show's faith in diplomacy and technology as tools for not just global but universal peace might seem touchingly dated in our post-9/11 age of stateless jihad, loose nukes, and omnipresent danger. Yet in a weird way, Star Trek's cheerfully square naiveté makes it the perfect film for our first summer of (slimly) renewed hope. It's a blockbuster for the Obama age, when smarts and idealism are cool again. In fact, can't you picture our president—levelheaded, biracial, implacably smart—on the bridge in a blue shirt and pointy ears?”
You might want to go rinse out your mouth now after you threw up a little into it. Stomach acid tends to be very hard on tooth enamel.
Item #3: From ABC News (Australian one) comes a story about Sikh cops who want bulletproof turbans.
”Sikh police officers in Britain reportedly want the Government to develop bullet-proof turbans to allow them to serve as firearms officers without having to remove their headwear.”“Sikh officers are exempt from a legal obligation to wear crash helmets because of their religion's requirement to wear a turban, but this means they cannot wear the protective headgear of firearms officers.”
Do any of the other cops in Britain actually have bulletproof headgear? It would seem so from the story. Maybe one of our Limey readers can put us some knowledge. For some reason I keep picturing something similar happening here, except with Native American cops who want bulletproof war bonnets or something.
TonightÂ’s critter and a notice about the tipline below the fold.

— Dave in Texas The guns of a mother. The mother of us all.
Michelle Obama's arms, we determined, were transformational. Her arms are representative of a new kind of woman: young, strong, vigorous, intelligent, accomplished, sexual, powerful, embracing and, most of all, loving.Today is Mother's Day. Today we should celebrate Michelle Obama's arms as the arms of a mother.
Tomorrow we will celebrate Michelle Obama's arms as the arms of a princess warrior. Or something.
If you can make yourself read the rest of it, you're made of tougher stuff than me. Chris Matthews and Keef had best step up their game, Sally has just set the bar for adoration.
tipped by Allah over at that twitter thing that will never amount to anything
UPDATE: Fair enough. It's saturday night, and we're all drunk.
What's the most amazing thing about Michelle Obama's arms?
Bill D. Cat:
72 Chuck Norris fears her arms .
In a contest between Michelle Obama's arms and Chrissy Matthews' leg, she'd rip off that tingley pin and beat his ass to death with it before he could spit out how excited he was just to be there.

— Open Blog In trade for the book he gave President Teleprompter, I guess he gets American property in his latest nationalization scheme.
Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez has sent troops to take over companies that provide services for the oil industry."This is a revolutionary offensive," he told workers near Lake Maracaibo, Venezuela's main oil-producing area.
Military vehicles were used as the state oil company seized supply boats and two US-owned gas facilities.
Could someone tell me how this is a "revolutionary offensive" when the dictator in charge is the one conducting the "revolution?" Shouldn't it be a "devolutionary offensive?"
Actually, it's pretty much just offensive. Oh, well, I could care less. I don't live in Venezuela. At least not for now.

— Open Blog I know we're not all huge Glenn Beck fans here, but he's doing the job the MSM refuses to in interviewing these former employees.
Actually one of the two, Marcel Reid, still works for ACORN, and refuses to leave. Her's is a compelling story...she still heads the DC ACORN chapter after termination orders came from ACORN national headquarters, because her board refused to fire her.
More on ACORN 8, here.
The interview is in three parts. You can start part one at the 2:50 mark:
