— Slublog A little food for thought from Newsbusters:
At the time of this writing, there are nearly 7,000 references to "George Tiller" in Google News.George Tiller dedicated his life to killing fetuses. There are under 500 for "William Long."
George Tiller, of course, was the Kansas abortion doctor murdered Sunday morning by a man who allegedly had political and religious motives.
William Long was the 23-year-old military recruiter murdered Monday morning by a man who allegedly had political and religious motives.
William Long dedicated his to killing terrorists.
One story still has 'legs,' the other is yesterday's news. Some priorities you've got there, MSM.
Someone has already commented on Twitter saying Tiller was a public figure, while the soldier was not. Granted, but how often are US soldiers murdered on US soil by a terror suspect?
Update - With this, I'm not trying to condemn one killer while praising another. Scott Roeder is a criminal and nothing justifies the murder of Dr. Tiller.
What bothers me is the willingness of the media to smear the entire pro-life movement based on Roeder's actions while devoting very little airtime or newspaper space to the national security implications of William Long's murder.
Update II - DrewM makes an interesting point in the comments. When Dr. Tiller was murdered, the White House released a statement on Sunday afternoon. As of 11:15 a.m. EST, the Commander in Chief has yet to release a statement condemning the murder of a member of the armed forces by a suspected terrorist.

— DrewM So much for the random crazy/gangbanger theory.
A Muslim convert who said he was opposed to the U.S. military shot two soldiers outside an Arkansas recruiting station, killing one of the soldiers, police said Monday."This individual appears to have been upset with the military, the Army in particular, and that's why he did what he did," Little Rock Police Lt. Terry Hastings said in a phone interview.
"He has converted to [Islam] here in the past few years," Hastings said. "To be honest we're not completely clear on what he was upset about. He had never been in the military."
Hastings identified the man in custody as Carlos Bledsoe, 24, of Little Rock, who was going by the name of Abdul Hakim Mujahid Muhammad. He did not have further details. The names of the soldiers were not released, nor was the condition of the wounded soldier.
I really hope Lt. Hastings isn't as clueless as that quote makes him sound.
The original post on this story is here.
A couple of commenters said Arkansas has the death penalty. Give this scumbag his trial and then dispose of him.
BTW- I haven't done a study of this but it's pretty clear this story is not getting near the play that the Tiller murder is. I wonder why that is.
The soldiers have been identified.
The soldier who was killed was identified as Pvt. William Long, 24, of Conway, and the wounded soldier is Pvt. Quinton Ezeagwula, 18, of Jacksonville, Thomas said.Ezeagwula is in stable condition and expected to recover, the police chief said.
Neither was a recruiter but soldiers from the Little Rock area who had just completed basic training. They were helping recruiters and serving as an example to individuals interested in the service.
UPDATE: The FBI Joint Terrorism Task Force had been investigating him since his return from Yemen.
Doesn't that make you feel better about releasing trained terrorists in the US? I mean the FBI will be following them so no problems, right?

— Open Blog Liberal Fascism Alert: This doesnÂ’t appear to be illegal, but itÂ’s clearly meant for one purpose only: Intimidation. Also Fabulousness!
”A group called WhoSigned.org says it will publicize the names of people signing petitions for Referendum 71, which seeks a public vote to overturn a new expansion of Washington's same-sex partnerships. WhoSigned.org says it's partnering with the gay rights group KnowThyNeighbor.org to put the names online. In a statement Monday, WhoSigned.org says it expects people who see the names online to contact the signers for what may be uncomfortable talks about gay rights and coordination of fashion accessories.”
ItÂ’s possible that the last item there isnÂ’t in the original Seattle Times article.
If all that made you lose your lunch, perhaps this can help you find it again: IÂ’m pleased to present school lunches from around the world.
The examples from the U.S. simply look pathetic and, if possible, far worse than when I was in school in the ‘70’s and ‘80’s. (They actually did a pretty killer beef stew and a tasty pan-pizza back in the day.) The Asian lunches look a lot tastier, or at least more interesting, with two caveats: 1) Seems like every one of them has a bowl of tofu soup, which is simply cruel and wrong and 2) Hey lunch ladies! You know those sharp things with handles you keep back there in the kitchen? Often referred to as knives? Would it kill you to spend the extra 5 seconds per lunch serving to go ahead and whack the head and tail off the whole battered fish you just plopped down on my tray?
Thanks to maetenloch

— Dave in Texas 67 year old despots have to have succession plans too. Especially if they didn't take such good care of themselves.
"It has been confirmed through various channels that North Korea sent emails to legations overseas, asking them to pledge their loyalty to (youngest son) Kim Jong-un," the South Korean daily Dong-A Ilbo reported an "informed source" as saying.
Eh. If a couple of members of the National Defense Commission drop off the map unexpectedly, we'll know it's a) a real story and b) junior took good notes.

— Gabriel Malor Gosh, this guy just can't get over himself. He has got to think of himself as the "first" to make all these "historic" decisions...which have all been done before. His latest boast is that he's the first president to appoint an out "LGBT" person to a Senate-confirmable position in his first 100 days.
Except, of course, for President Clinton (also the first black president!) who did it over 16 years ago by appointing out lesbian Roberta Achtenberg to be Assistant Secretary for Fair Housing and Equal Opportunity in his first 100 days. (That appointment, by the way, was held up by Jesse Helms who didn't want to vote for "that damn lesbian." Yes, in my lifetime it was suggested that gay people couldn't be trusted to waste taxpayer money in federal bureaucracies as well as straight people.)

Obama has been nosediving in the gay community lately, which feels betrayed because he's failed to follow through on any of the promises he made them. And now, as Ace posted earlier, Darth Cheney has them all conflicted (although this isn't really a position change for him).

— Ace Via Free Republic, from Obama's own website.
First, he pointed out that someone's background was just a background. It might be nice and all that, but it's not really a reason to vote them onto a court.
Let me wrap up by making mention of a subtext to this debate. As was true with Clarence Thomas, as was true with Alberto Gonzales, as was true with Condoleezza Rice, my esteemed colleagues on the other side of the aisle have spent a lot of time during this debate discussing Justice Brown's humble beginnings as a child of a sharecropper. They like to point out she was the first African American to serve on the California Supreme Court.I, too, am an admirer of Justice Brown's rise from modest means, just as I am an admirer of Alberto Gonzales's rise from modest means, just as I am an admirer of Clarence Thomas's rise from modest means, just as I am an admirer of Condoleezza Rice's rise from modest means. I think it is wonderful. We should all be grateful where opportunity has opened the doors of success for Americans of every background.
Etc.
I do not think that because Justice Brown is an African-American woman she has to adhere to a particular political orthodoxy, something that has been suggested by the other side of the aisle. Just as it would be cynical and offensive that Justice Brown be vilified simply for being a Black conservative, it is equally offensive and cynical to suggest that somehow she should get a pass for her outlandish views simply because she is a Black woman.I hope we have arrived at a point in our country's history where Black folks can be criticized for holding views that are out of the mainstream, just as Whites are criticized when they hold views that are out of the mainstream. I hope we have come to the point where a woman can be criticized for being insensitive to the rights of women, just as men are criticized when they are insensitive to the rights of women.
And yet the White House has warned us to watch what we say about Sotomayor. Seems racist -- extending this Praetorian Guard of racial protection to a wise Latina and not a wise Black woman.
Obama wasn't alone. His fellow White Male Democrats heartily agreed that it was okay to oppose a minority woman, wise or otherwise.
Then again, they're white males, so we know that, more often than not, they will come to a worse conclusion than a wise Latina. So I guess this particular evidence is ambiguous in import.
Obama also of course voted against Roberts and Alito, even while admitting they were amply qualified. Because they lacked "empathy." Or something.
Empathy. And irony.

— Ace "Freedom means freedom for every one."
A Gallup poll recently confirmed the obvious: knowing someone who's gay makes you more sympathetic to the gay agenda. Obviously, Dick Cheney has a bit of this going on.

— Ace And add in another $120,000 or so of personal debt. But, of course, that is debt people affirmatively, personally took on.
This debt is made up of a mix of obligations, including Social Security, Medicare, and all of the unfunded obligations and guarantees the government makes. Obama isn't responsible for all of this; but he did just increase our obligations by a not-too-shabby twelve percent in just about 140 days.
Depending on the interest rate on this debt, it might take something like $25,000 per household, per year, for fifty years, to pay this off.
This highlights something. The biggest statist program ever enacted before were Social Security and Medicare. Previously, these programs, while huge, were doable because of favorable demographics -- there had, previously, been a lot of younger workers supporting a relatively small number of older retirees, so the cost per worker was manageable.
Because of the big shift in demographics, of course, this is now a very expensive program, with a relatively small number of younger workers supporting a huge number of older retirees.
So, the demographic check for FDR's programs are finally coming due in full.
At this moment, with the huge obligations imposed by FDR now coming due with a vengeance, the new FDR wants to impose huge new obligations.
The demographic bomb that is Social Security and Medicare is scary enough, and hard enough to manage. And yet Obama wants to tax an economy that's already straining to meet previous obligations with fresh ones.
Cap and Trade, Slash and Burn: The best case scenario is that Waxman's cap-and-tax system will impose new costs of $1600 per year per household.
And what do we get for that? Nothing. At best, assuming this works (and the European experience says it won't) we get a 4% drop in annual CO2 production, which is pretty much nothing at all, even if you subscribe to Al Gore level global warming panic.
Bear in mind the alarmists demand something like a 90% reduction in CO2 output in order to "save the earth." I've never heard it suggested that a mere 4% drop would do the trick.
In related new, no one making under $250,000 per year will pay "a dime" in new taxes. Obama said so, and I believe him. Because I'm stupid.

Well, that didn't take long, now did it?
I have it on good authority that AlterNet will present a similar indictment if the Arkansas recruiting-station assassin turns out to be a part of the anti-war left.
