This is the 65W version for OEMs. If you have a desktop system you should be able to configure the TDP down from 105W to 65W in the BIOS, if you want it to run cool and quiet.

Gun Thread: Post-Blog Disaster Edition! [Weasel]
— Ace Open Blog

Green, GREEN...  A thousand times GREEN!!

Howdy Y'all, it's Sunday evening which can only mean it's time for the Post Blog Disaster Gun Thread! It's been a wacky week around here, that's for sure! Let's gather 'round in the rubble and begin our weekly discussion of the wonderful world of guns and shooting!

So the left has announced a bunch of new potential gun control measures. Surprise, surprise. We've known it was coming, and well, here it comes. Who knows what will be accomplished through legislation and what will be done through Executive Orders. Either way, it's going to be an infringement on our 2nd Amendment rights. What will be interesting is to see how many choose to ignore whatever comes along. Stay tuned.

And on the subject of the 2nd Amendment, there was a very good post earlier today with a lot of great discussion on the NRA. Well worth reading if you missed it.

On to happier things. Spring time is here and with the temps warming up, conditions are becoming more favorable for outdoor range time. The ammunition situation is still fluid, but I am getting the impression supply is loosening up a wee little bit. Are you seeing this too? As conditions hopefully continue to improve, give some thought to increasing your personal strategic reserve in the calibers you most frequently shoot.

With that, lets take a peek below, shall we?

Food Thread: Dipping Into The Archives Edition [CBD]
— Ace Open Blog

That's a spicy margarita from "The Olde Pink House," in Savannah Georgia.

Exactly the sort of restaurant that sends me to the internet to find another place. Grand old building (gorgeous), old style name, reviews all say it is one of Savannah's best classic restaurants, but it has the scent of kitsch and tourist trap and there are actual real live tourists waiting outside for tables.

Luckily I listened to commenter "Jane D'oh" and didn't trust my obviously flawed instincts, because we had we had one of the best meals of the last five years.

The people who work there are uniformly professional, relaxed, competent and friendly. And everything was excellent. The service was friendly and classic, but not formal. The portions were exactly the correct size, so after several courses we were happily satiated but not unpleasantly stuffed. The cocktails were excellent. That margarita had a nice zing from the jalapeno but it wasn't stupidly hot like so many others I have tried. The wine guy wasn't pushy at all and we arrived at a choice that was excellent and well priced (shit...we had two bottles).

As for the food? The best Southern cooking I have ever eaten. There is nothing out of place on the menu; hell, we had fried green tomatoes and shrimp and grits as a first course! But those shrimp may have been the best shrimp I have ever eaten, certainly in the top two or three shrimp dishes ever. And the tomatoes were marvelously crispy and intensely flavored, but without the thick and unpleasant batter that one finds all too often. And the candied bacon underneath them? Yes, that's why I have been obsessing over candied bacon!

One dish I always look for when I am in the South is crispy whole flat fish, and the flounder here was marvelous. I would hesitate to get it again without asking for the apricot-shallot sauce on the side, because I think it dominated the perfectly fried fish. By the way, it was offered to me with the sauce on the side but I wanted to get the genuine article. It was delicious and I ate it all and licked the plate when my wife stepped out, so my complaint is more stylistic than anything.

Oh: dessert. Best dessert in a long, long time. They call it a "Peanut Butter and Praline Mousse Bomb." Sounds too sweet, but it wasn't. It was inventive and delicious; a perfect ending to an impressive meal.

Adventures With Fentanyl [CBD]
— Ace Open Blog

I spent a lovely morning with an oral surgeon a few days ago, having a couple of pesky wisdom teeth pulled out of my jaw. Actually, only one needed to be removed, but the surgeon suggested that since I was in the chair, I might as well have both remaining teeth extracted. Oh joy. Even Nevergiveup agreed, so I went for it.

I had wisdom teeth removed before, but it was in my callow youth, and as I recall it wasn't a big deal, so I was a bit surprised when the surgeon recommended general anesthesia.

But I was quite surprised when he administered Fentanyl before the anesthesia, and it was quite an experience. I have had my share of opiates (two ruptured discs), and I am a big fan of their pain management, but the feeling of the Fentanyl was decidedly unpleasant. No gentle fog; rather it felt like I had my bell rung. Luckily he administered the anesthesia a short time later, but the hangover from the Fentanyl was quite different and quite a bit worse than my previous experience with other opiates.

This is obviously anecdotal and means very little, but I think I will scratch off "Buy Fentanyl-laced heroin and get high with Hunter Biden" from my bucket list.

Wayne LaPierre, The NRA, And Defense Of The 2nd Amendment [CBD]
— Ace Open Blog

Wayne LaPierre is the fifth-highest paid non-profit head in the United States, according to Charity Watch. They give the SPLC an "F" grade, so they can't be all bad.

The recent revelations about out-of-control spending at the NRA, coupled with internal struggles and a conspicuous absence of the NRA in the 2020 elections has me wondering whether I should continue to give them money. And LaPierre's use of a contractor's yacht for a hide-out from the media (and he claims death threats) is simply awful optics, especially when that contractor's company was being paid $2,000,000/month! Whatever happened to self defense? Isn't LaPierre armed? Doesn't he believe in the natural right of self defense, or is he sufficiently isolated from reality that he prefers armed guards and gated harbors and yachts to keep him safe?

What disturbs me most about the NRA is not only the cult of personality that LaPierre has managed to create, but its bloated and out-of-touch bureaucracy and inability to focus on the dominant issue of the day. Do a web search and the stories are not about the organization filing law suits against encroachments on our 2nd Amendment rights, the stories are about the bankruptcy filing in NY (apparently done rather badly) and LaPierre's lavish lifestyle that is funded by the organization...which means you and me.

A visit to the NRA website is an exercise in frustration if one has any curiosity about its finances. How about some recognition that people may want to see exactly how their money is spent? Or a recognition that all is not rosy and wonderful in its headquarters?

Cooler and calmer heads on these august pages have pointed out that while the NRA is nowhere near perfect, it is by far the largest 2nd Amendment advocacy group in the United States, and that it does some fine work in many areas, including training and firearms safety.

Yes, that is true, but an NRA without Wayne LaPierre would be a far better organization. Their best and really only course of action is to force him out, hire someone who is less enamored of the trappings of non-profit wealth and celebrity, and get back to doing what we pay for: the defense of our gun rights.

Sunday Morning Book Thread 04-11-2021 [OregonMuse]
— Ace Open Blog

Good morning to all you 'rons, 'ettes, lurkers, and lurkettes, wine moms, frat bros, crétins sans pantalon (who are technically breaking the rules). Welcome once again to the stately, prestigious, internationally acclaimed and high-class Sunday Morning Book Thread, a weekly compendium of reviews, observations, snark, witty repartee, hilarious bon mots, and a continuing conversation on books, reading, spending way too much money on books, writing books, and publishing books by escaped oafs and oafettes who follow words with their fingers and whose lips move as they read. Unlike other AoSHQ comment threads, the Sunday Morning Book Thread is so hoity-toity, pants are required. Even if it's these pants, which, you know, it's funny how, even though what's 'cool' changes from year to year, dorky is always dorky. I'll bet these pants were dorky even in 1955, and any unfortunate boy who got caught wearing them probably got unmercifully taunted at school and then pantsed by ruffians and made to watch as his dorky trousers got run up a flagpole. And then, later on, a number of these pantsless beta dorks got together and started the Lincoln Project.

Saturday Overnight Open Thread (4/10/21)
— Ace Open Blog

The Saturday Night Joke

Hillary Clinton goes to a gifted-student primary school in New York to talk about the world. After her talk she offers question time.

One little boy puts up his hand. Hillary asks him what his name is.

"Kenneth," he says.

"And what is your question, Kenneth?" she asks.

"I have three questions," he says.

"First -- whatever happened in Benghazi?

"Second -- why would you run for president if you are not capable of handling two e-mail accounts?

"And, third -- whatever happened to the missing six billion dollars while you were Secretary of State?"

Just then the bell rings for recess. Hillary informs the kiddies that they will continue after recess.

When they resume Hillary says, "Okay, where were we? Oh, that's right, question time.

Who has a question?"

A different boy -- little Johnny -- puts his hand up.

Hillary points to him and asks him what his name is.

"Johnny," he says.

"And what is your question, Johnny?" she asks.

"I have five questions," he says.

"First -- whatever happened in Benghazi?

"Second -- why would you run for president if you are not capable of handling two e-mail accounts?

"Third -- whatever happened to the missing six billion dollars while you were Secretary of State?

"Fourth -- why did the recess bell go off 20 minutes early?

"And, fifth -- where's Kenneth?"
