March 16th Open Thread (below the Travel Thread) for Politics [Y-not]
— Open Blogger

Here's your Open Thread to discuss politics and news for those of you not interested in the travel thread.

To get you started, the latest news from Venezuela continues to be bad.

People who want food need to get marked and then stand in outrageously long lines:

BiORd-UCcAIBPhx.jpg

More about the food shortage courtesy of Fausta's Blog.

This in NOT a demonstration, this is a line to buy food in Venezuela. The result of 15 years of Chavismo.

Bh0k7C5IIAAbUxU.jpg

Finally, from the Catholic Register:

Deep economic problems and violent demonstrations in Venezuela have left Catholic charities struggling to supply food and medical supplies amid an increase in demand for services, said a top Catholic aid official.

"The situation has been getting worse over the last year, but now we're at the point where it has become very difficult for us to even find basic (food items) or to buy medications," Janeth Marquez de Soler, executive director of Caritas Venezuela, told Catholic News Service March 10.

Shortages of basic foods, rising inflation, high crime and political divisions have led to tense protests across Venezuela in the past month as opponents of President Nicolas Maduro and thousands of students have taken to the streets to demand changes. Demonstrations on several occasions turned violent, however, leaving at least 21 people dead and prompting the bishops of Caracas

I guess this is Obama's South American Spring.

MR's Alex Tabarrok isn't worried about the effect of unlimited mass immigration on employment. Of course, he's a tenured Professor at an East Coast University, so it's not really his problem, is it?

23 Interesting, when you consider the  words of the Catholic charities, and couple that with  the pictures.

The problem is not the shortages, it's distribution.

It's been said that all modern famines are political in nature, not due to real shortages.

If the people aren't being supplied with basic food and necessities, it's not necessarily because they don't exist.

25 Global GDP per capita is about $10k. US GDP per capita is about $50k. The Libertarian Open Borders people, like Tabarrok and Volokh believe that is immoral and think we should have open borders until that equalizes. And if everybody moved around until we all were at $15k, they would be ecstatic. Look -- we raised global GDP by 50%! Sure, Americans lost 70% of their GDP, but the gains to the non-Americans more than made up for that. At least they are honest about their total and complete indifference to the welfare of Americans and American families.

My wife is about to leave for a conference in Argentina (BA).  She was actually supposed to leave on Saturday, but between the Argentinian bureaucracy and the efficiency of low level US government employees, her visa was not approved in time.  She's going to try again tomorrow.

I'm now not so sure that the delay, (and hopefully permanent delay) was a bad thing.  The usual waste of time that is training for foreign travel turned out to be hair-raising.  I'd very much like for her to be unable to go.

The conference I was attending was an electron microscopy conference. Usually those will have a lot of vendors who will actually set up the microscopes and other equipment. This one had virtually none. Turned out that the bribes required to get the equipment into (and OUT of) the country were too high for the companies to bother.

Because they would have to go through Panama and the Chinese would object; and
the ones that could afford a flight are already in Florida.

Me personally I think Maduro & Cia are trying to figure out if they need to invade Curacao or Colombia to garner national support, start trying to blackmail the EU by threatening the Ariane site in Surinam for operating funds, or just start rounding up people and shooting them in soccer stadiums across the country.  They will think three times before doing the last if they have an eye on hosting a World Cup sometime in the future.

No such thing as a single car wreck in Redneck Rules. A wreck is multi-car, and the best ones lead to fights in the pit and often start feuds. Sometimes the WAGs even jump in on the action.

117 It is kinda funny to see a Logano or a Kesolowski try and look tough. Posted by: ManWithNoParty at March 16, 2014 03:45 PM (ojnk6) Do not get me started. I always whine about the lack of Southerners in NASCAR drivers any more, but I think it's more that they're all so damn bland. Your average poor white Southerner generally has some charm and sass about them, whereas these Yankee/Cali/Northern boyz seem so dull. And when they DO have some sort of spark, it's usually just assholiness. (Tony Stewart)

125 email from King Barky and the democrats:

The top Republican in the House said Americans should judge them not on how many laws they pass, but on how many they repeal.

The top Republican in the Senate said his top priority wasn't to create jobs or expand opportunity, but to beat me.

I want to work with Congress wherever I can to do the job the American people sent us here to do -- but it turns out Republicans and Democrats have some very different ideas about what that means.

Let me level with you: The only way we're going to achieve our goals is by electing more Democrats in 2014.

Add your name to help elect Democrats to a Congress we can all be proud of

It is a strange new development, but to be honest, he may have been planning this over a long time.  Like those of us who rehearse what we would like to say to the boss if we win the lottery.  Just because it SEEMS sudden, doesn't make it so.

Also: as I know absolutely nothing about internal Malaysian politics, I'm forcing myself to refrain from blaming the Religion Of Peace just yet.

135 re 130, olddog: oh, yes, I get lots of them. here's a beg-mail from "organizing for action" from yesterday:

"If you were thinking about chipping in to the last push for health care, here's a reminder for you:

One Koch-brothers funded group alone has spent $27 million on anti-Obamacare ads -- since August.

Our work is the most powerful force pushing back on that cynical campaign full of misinformation. "

and from Sen Gillibrand (Dope -- NY) on behalf of NH Sen Shaheen (being challenged by Scott Brown):

"Jeanne’s seat is key to keeping our Democratic majority, but it will not be easy – the Kochs and other far-right groups are on the attack. Now that Brown is in, Jeanne will face tens of millions more."

And March 5 from Lizzy Warren (Heckowi Indian from MA):
"I know these policies sound crazy to you and me. But Karl Rove, the Koch Brothers, and their powerful allies will spend zillions of dollars in the next eight months to tear down our candidates and bring the House Republicans' agenda to the Senate. Like you, I'm frustrated about the status quo, but I'm deeply concerned it can get even worse."

you might notice things in common.
