Of Course: Obama Using March Madness Brackets to Sell Obamacare
— Ace

Obama's dwindling fans are encouraged to fill out their own brackets, in which the "Sweetest 16 Reasons to #GetCovered" will be competing as the best reason to sign up for bad, overpriced insurance.

This latest Trivial Social Media Stunt seems inadequate to the task, given that Democrats are now privately admitting that Obamacare is "political poison."

Even former White House spokesman Robert Gibbs now confesses Democratic hold of the Senate is "definitely, absolutely" in danger.

The Wire says Democrats are having a "midterm freakout."

18 I made this point last night and was pilloried here for it...

I don't see this as a bad move for Obama. Social media and pop culture works for him. It's how he got elected twice. Will it turn around 2014? No. Might it marginally help get some LIV yuuts to take a look at health insurance options? Probably.

In either case, this "oh my god I can't believe the president is demeaning himself like this" rebuttal from the right is stupid. Obama/Dems are great at marketing. They know their market and they tailor the message to reach that market. Granted they fuck it up sometimes, like Pajama Boy. But for the most part they know what they're doing.

On the other side...we get ORCA.

94 "Obamacare is going to crush the Dems this fall. Bank on it."

Not banking on anything, thanks. Still wincing from the burns from last time.

I'll refrain from posting the list of Senate seats that I had figured to be absolute slam dunk certain victories for the GOP in 2012. It was a long list. Might even have had Dingy Harry Reid demoted to Senate Minority Leader in the most optimistic scenarios. Wouldn't that have been nice?

And then? Then we had that idiot Limbaugh attacking Sandra Fluke instead of correctly ignoring her. Then Akin. Then Mourdock.

Then the Democratic identity politics messaging machine got cranked up to eleven with WAR ON WIMMENZ, pitched to the "Julia" vote, quoting Rush and Akin and Mourdock.

Then more than 2/3s of the Julias in the country voted Democratic, and that was that. Not only for the Senate seats I thought were sure things, but also for Mitt Romney.

So how confident am I that fuckwit Republican candidates won't run their mouths again in damaging ways? Especially with regard to Julia issues? I have no confidence whatsoever.

It was only a few days ago that a GOP officeholder responded sarcastically to a comment about battered women by saying, "I still eat mine plain."

FFS! Was nothing learned from the 2012 disaster? Apparently not. This shit matters. It's the fuel on which the Democrats have repeatedly and successfully supercharged their messaging machine.

144 2012 was the "theoretical" fight over Obamacare. 2014 is the reality. The nastiness of the law, all of the misery it causes, and the complete inability for most Democrats serving to distance themselves (youtube is forever!) leaves them with no cover. The Democrats will likely go all-in on turning governors mansions as the House has been long-written off and the Senate looks worse each week. There are more vulnerable GOP Governors than there are truly vulnerable Republican House seats and Senate seats combined. If the RGA actually does it's job (and Christie may make that tough, but let's go with this), the Rs may net a governor's mansion or two (AR, IL, CO) despite losing Govs Corbett and LePage. It isn't a good year for them, they know it, and they're ripping through the stages of death.

It was pure marketing of an obvously defective product to anybody with any common sense. --- 2008 was the confluence of a very unique set of events with a once in a lifetime candidate. 2012 - well it may not have made all the difference, but we didn't really nominate a good candidate. True to a point. But most people weren't "buying" Obama, they were voting for him for free. And the alternative product was McCain in 2008 and he had the press covering for him madly in 2012. If the msm had actually reported on F&F, Benghazi, the IRS, the real facts about Obamacare, etc., he would have been dust. Hell, they actually reported the WH spin that the economy and unemployment were improving. But Obamacare has real costs to almost everyone that are only now becoming apparent. When it was just a plan the left and the media could spin (lie) about how it was going to work and those who couldn't be bothered to look at the facts thought it was a great product. Thats why Obamacare implementation was put off until after the 2012 election. I've always believed that once people got to see what Obamacare was really all about they would reject it out of hand. One of the oldest jokes in advertising is that the best advertising campaign in the world for dog food won't work if the dogs won't eat the dog food. The dogs have now seen the food and they won't eat it.

There are very, very few rah-rah'ers among them right now, which was not the case in 2012- most were overwhelmingly cocky and rightfully dismissive of Republican claims of "skewed polls". Go to any left-wing site when polls are released now showing their Senate incumbents in trouble. It's like looking into a mirror: a whoooole lot of "Republican tactics with voters" and "the polls are undersampling/oversampling/skewed (ha!)". They are doing what we were doing in 2012. They even have their "black hole" candidate, doomed to lose, whom they can't help but keep shuffling money and support towards- Wendy Davis. It really is fascinating to watch. 208 OT the senior pilot, the one everyone is looking at as the potential suicide, was not on the flight schedule that night the pilot who was supposed to fly that night got pulled off the schedule, and this guy was asked to fly instead don't know who made the switch or why. in light of that, a poster at Jetphotos.net wrote, I cannot see any far fetched scenario where the aircraft has been flown to a secret location by shadowing another airliner etc etc for future use. The planning required to pull this off would be massive involving a worldwide team with members in many locations across various countries. Intelligence would likely have had a hint that something of this nature was in the planning as many international calls and/or much internet chat would have been going on for many months or longer. The change of Captain at the last minute also suggests that a combined Captain/Co-pilot plan was unlikely. When I think of it, it also suggests an unlikelihood that the Captain was involved, neither did he wish to commit suicide. I am assuming the latter since it appears that he was scheduled to be off at the time, then asked at the last minute to operate the flight. How could he have put such an elaborate plan together at such short notice? To me, this narrows things down to the co-pilot. Also corroborated by the latest suggestion that the co-pilot may have made the last radio call after the first stages of the plan have already been set in motion. The climb to much higher than normal altitude followed by erratic altitude flying could indeed be explained by a struggle on the flight deck. It could also contrarily have been part of the plan to eliminate the passengers and cabin crew as quickly as possible by hypoxia, knowing that the flight deck has access to a much longer supply of oxygen. The co-pilot could ultimately have set the aircraft to head south for the vast Indian Ocean (or north to the vast expanses of uninhabited wilderness), then also killed himself so that the aircraft would continue for many hours until fuel starvation and ultimate crash. No weapon would have been necessary, he could simply have depressurized the aircraft (for the second time assuming he re-pressurized after all the passengers were dead/unconscious) and let hypoxia set in. This is a painless way to die. If this theory, or something close to it is what happened. Debris will be found somewhere (maybe not for a long time) in the Indian Ocean or wreckage somewhere in China, Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan or even Turkmenistan. I have recently flown a route in the vicinity of the outer part of the northern arc over some of these countries and can assure posters/readers that these countries have vast uninhabited expanses of desert/wilderness/mountains and the burned out wreckage of a B772 would be tiny in comparison. The only thing that might make such a thing a little easier to spot might be the fact that significant areas of higher ground in these areas is at present snow covered making a dark spot more obvious. I do think however that the Indian Ocean is somewhat more likely. this makes the most sense to me

252 CAC, I just saw an Iowa poll that says Iowans are very disappointed in Obama yet they are going to pull that D lever for Harkins open seat and Hilllary has a 12 point lead over any R. Posted by: Spring Fever at March 17, 2014 05:15 PM (i7KmQ) Well by all means then the world is surely over. Or...that's one poll showing the Republican field hasn't gelled at all (makes sense- no first-tier candidates and a very divided primary) and that Hillary leads in a theoretical election that is over two years away. R's aren't favored to win the IA Senate seat, certainly not to the degree they are in South Dakota, Montana, West Virginia, Arkansas, Louisiana, North Carolina, Michigan, Colorado or Alaska. If they can get their act straight there and unify rapidly post-primary, watch those numbers close up a tad. It also helps the Democrats that the candidate they have running there has been using the "Obamcare is a big failure" line, despite voting for it. FL13 was a special election, but what should terrify Dems MOST about it was they had the strongest possible candidate to compete in a tossup district against a Republican candidate who barely won his primary and was already being written off by DC-area politicos, they polled "fix it" as working well, they out-fundraised the Republican, their candidate RAN on being a moderate and won a substantial crossover vote... and they still lost.

255 "But the reality is pop culture is a vehicle to gain votes. I hate that this country is at the level where POTUS goes on Entertainment Tonight. But you're not going to change that. So either you cede the Entertainment Tonight demo to the Dems or you fight back. And the same goes for ESPN appearances, American Idol, you name it."

1968. Richard Nixon went on _Laugh-In_.

Guess what changed between 1968 and now?

Starting in the Seventies, baby boomers fresh from leftist campus radicalism took over all the executive positions in entertainment and media.

As the boomers have aged and started to die or retire, they've been replaced in those key positions by younger figures who are cut from the same cloth.

So any "pop culture" strategy basically relies on an uphill attack against a strongpoint that's been completely dominated and extensively fortified by the New Left for four decades now. Sure, that'll work brilliantly.

Not to mention that Republicans generally aren't any good at this stuff. I still remember with a huge cringe Mitt Romney coming across a couple of young black guys and essaying, with a stiff Mormon smile, "Who let tha dogs out?"

Facepalm.

What's the counter strategy to flashy triviality? It's not to ineptly try to mirror flashy triviality. It's to instead project dignified seriousness. The media model that Mike Deaver put together for Reagan.

The Deaver message to the public was: "This guy is _the president_. THE PRESIDENT. Of the UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. He has the most important job in the country. Crushing responsibilities. Massive demands. Do not expect him to go fluttering after trivialities."

Perhaps that won't work any longer. Couldn't hurt to try.

For people under 35/40, the OFFICE OF THE PRESIDENCY just doesn't mean a hell of a lot. It's what can he do for me and is he cool? And yes I know this doesn't apply to 100% of the people, but it does apply to a significant majority.

Putting aside the self evident failure of this "signature legislation" for Barkey, the Rats and media are letting  and/or defending Obama and the DHS as they make up new rules contrary to their own fucking law  as each new O-care shitstorm arises.  All to save face and legacy for the lazy, loser of a president who has fucked everything up he has touched, intentionally or through arrogant incompetence or neglect.  Nobody, I mean nobody, could have convinced me that the nation and world would be so boned by his election.

At least race relations are better.  Oh wait....
