Yet Another ObamaCare Surprise: The Mandatory Race Questionnaire

If you want to see your doctor, you are now required to declare your race and ethnicity and fill out a questionnaire.

The image below was sent to me by a reader who went for a visit to a physician, and was told that she could not be seen unless she filled out this race and ethnicity questionnaire, and put her name on the form.

She initially refused, but they insisted that it was required or she could not see the doctor. The form does indicate that it is mandatory under Section 4302 of Obamacare.

Thanks Obama and Congress. These days I always put myself down as 'Mixed' since a) it's true in the larger sense and b) it fucks up all their statistics.

Anti-PIV RadFeminist Very Unhappy That Men Read Her PIV=Rape Blog Post

If you're wielding a P, just reading her rant is a threat. And thinking that someone who regularly generates several thousand words screeds on the utter perfidy of all men might have some screws loose is a form of misogynistic gaslighting. And criticizing her criticisms is a form of assault. (thanks to red)

When men view our blogs in such large numbers, it's a threat. They're not just looking at it, they view it with the intent of harming radical feminists and women in general. They do it to collect information so they know what next to do to prevent women from going there. They batter radfem work in public for all women to see and show the result of their verbal and written battering as an example of what will await women if they do, think or say the same.

...Unlike a normal blogger, attracting 85,000 hits isn't something I want to celebrate. It's threatening: you know they're after you, it only means you've hit men's radar and you have no idea what they plan to do. Will they attempt to hack into my blog? Will they try to find info about me? The kinds of thought this leads me to is 85,000 men going after me in real life.

Scrolling through page after page of angsty driven man-hate I can't help but think that some therapy would lead to a much, much happier life for her. But I'm sure that's just the P-driven non-nurturing result-centric hetero-patriarch in me talking.

The Congressional Class of 1974 is Almost gone, Thank God

With Waxman, Baucus, and Harkin retiring or resigning we're down to two remaining member of the 1974 class - Chuck Grassley (R-IA) and Rick Nolan (D-MN)*.

And Moe Lane isn't sorry to see them go.

.and good riddance to bad rubbish. That was the Congress (specifically: those were the Congressional Democrats) who decided to make the USA break its promise, and thus condemned several million people in South Vietnam to a life of slavery and want. In a just world, they would have been long since hounded from office; alas, I have to settle for watching them settle into the indifferent embraces of entropy.  Admittedly, that has its compensations.

Remember That Time the US Invaded a Japanese Submarine Base in Alaska?

The Aleutians Campaign is mostly forgotten these days and many of the battlefields are still not open to visitors.

An absolutely fascinating but little-known story-described as a "forgotten theater" by the U.S. Navy itself-is the tale of Kiska and Attu, Alaska: two remote Aleutian islands where the Japanese military established a submarine base during World War II.

The islands-surprisingly close to the outer edge of the Japanese archipelago-were to serve as a landing point and restocking way-station for the Japanese on their way to a much larger invasion of the American mainland.

What ensued, however, was a harrowing 13-month period of submarine and naval warfare, including the all-out shelling and aerial bombardment of an enemy encampment constructed on U.S. territory-but not yet a U.S. state, as Alaska would only become the 49th state of the Union in 1959.

If Your Parents Were Long-Lived, Will You Be Too?

Not necessarily but you might get a few years beyond the average.

But in fact the correlation of longevity between individual parents and children is very low.  For the people dying in England in the period 1858-2012 with the rare surnames used in chapter 4, we can measure the correlation of longevity between fathers and sons for more than four thousand sons surviving until at least age 21.  That correlation is only 0.13.  If we take the average of both parents' ages at death, that correlation increases to 0.26.  But it is still low.  In reality, your age at death is not strongly predictable from your parents' age at death.  All those saving more for retirement simply because both parents are fit, healthy, and in their nineties should stop immediately.  Your expected additional longevity relative to the average is only three years.

Cop Arrests Firefighter at Accident Scene For Not Moving Fire Truck

Good thing it was caught on camera, or it would be tough to believe: A California Highway Patrol officer put an on-duty Chula Vista firefighter in handcuffs for refusing to move his truck while tending to victims of a car crash.

As he was being handcuffed on the side of the 805 Freeway near Orange County, the firefighter, 12-year veteran Jacob Gregoire, told reporters who had gathered, "I just want to let you all know he's arresting me."

Later, according to CBS News 8, Gregoire told the arresting officer, whose name has not been released, "It's unbelievable you guys have to treat us like this. We are trying to help you guys."

The officer replied, "We asked you to clear the road, you said 'No.' You are being arrested for not moving."

It seems the Highway Patrol and Fire Department have different views on what the priorities after an accident should be (keeping traffic flowing vs treating victims on the freeway) and the conflict got more heated this time around.

Frank Herbert "Reviews" a Beer

Part of the Something Awful's  'Great Authors Series':

There came a hazy pour, like the refraction pattern of a Torbit Shield, dropping into a Helfmann's Suspension Flask from a distance of two meters. The house imbibery was immediately filled with the sunny smell of hops. These were faraway hops from the rockfalls of the west wall and tasted of soft desert mingled with the Sea of Peace, pine, stone, and fresh baked bread.

The beardman was Quali and was called Yult Cherrik and came from a long line of blood-encrypted hypno-barbacks. His brewery conditioning had long ago been unraveled by a need to serve his customers spirits to their liking. As one of the elect of Quali, his arrogance persisted, and he approached my order with some hostility.

"Firestone Walker Double Jack?" he said and held out the Helfmann's Suspension Flask. I took it from him with a crackle of field refrigeration. He frowned. "Adjust two degrees by five five copy one."

Underwear Statue at Wellesley Causes Angst

"[T]his highly lifelike sculpture has, within just a few hours of its outdoor installation, become a source of apprehension, fear, and triggering thoughts regarding sexual assault for many members of our campus community," says the petition. "While it may appear humorous, or thought-provoking to some, it has already become a source of undue stress for many Wellesley College students, the majority of whom live, study, and work in this space."

Well I thought art was supposed to be all transgressive and shit. But apparently only as long as it upsets the proper people.

45 Attu and Kiska.

The Japanese looked at the map and saw how they could be great places to put airfields.  Plus act as a diversion for Operation MI.

Admiral Fuzzy Theobald when briefed could not believe the Japanese would attack Dutch Harbor.  So his cruiser force was not close to intercept the two Japanese light carriers which had to operate in those fog covered waters.  It was from this diversionary attack, one A6M2 crash landed that the US Navy was able to repair and find all of its secrets and weaknesses.

As for those islands being suitable for airfields.  Everyone familiar with Alaska and the construction of the airfield at Umiak had a good laugh.  The airfield would ripple when P-40s took off or landed.

Before Surigao Strait, it was in the Aleutians that the only IJN USN gun duel occurred without any naval aviation occurred.  It was a cruiser battle with inconclusive results.

93 Be sure and check out the A Voice For Men website. They've got good stuff there.

One of their funny/endearing traits to me is how they've taken a number of common phrases they and other people use and turned them into acronyms. To name just a few:

MGTOW = Men Going Their Own Way (i.e., rejecting marriage so they can't get screwed in divorce court or in other ways)

NAWALT = Not All Women Are Like That (a common defense against MRA allegations from women who identify as non-feminist)

NAFALT = Not All Feminists Are Like That (same as NAWALT, but this defense is from moderate feminists)

PUA = Pick-Up Artist (supposedly someone well-versed in seducing and sleeping with women; used as a term of extreme derision by A Voice For Men, as they believe men who want women are basically asking to be destroyed emotionally and financially)

There are others, but you can probably get the gist.

I had an old shotgun buddy (he fired at double skeet from the hip!) who was in that. They say it was the longest single naval artillery duel in history. "a landing point and restocking way-station for the Japanese on their way to a much larger invasion of the American mainland"

Dunno about that.  Not sure it's exactly clear why the Japs took that toe-hold in the Aleutians.  Was part of the Midway operation (simultaneous), but it's too far north to be a "covering" operation for Midway.

One small bonus from it:  an IJN pilot had to make an emergency landing, landed on a bright green "field" that of course in June in the Aleutians is actually deep dense wet muck, and killed hisself instantly when his Zero flipped over.  We found it, brought it to San Diego, where it was repaired and Navy pilots flew/examined/tested it extensively, giving us the first direct insights into its structure and weaknesses (no self-sealing fuel lines/tanks, prop torque so high given the overall weight that it was sluggish turning left compared to right in a dive, couldn't dive as fast as a Wildcat).  (Anna Puma, correct me here if I have erred)

Oh, and the I-805 in Chula Vista is "near Orange County" the way the JFK Bridge into Delaware is "near the Capital Beltway", i.e., it isn't.  It's down near the "border" (always remember to use scare quotes on that one), the OC is about 75 miles north.

Up front, those stories are almost allays incorrect, especially for people from Back East, however --

The three major DNA testing services, 23andMe, AncestryDNA and Family Tree DNA each have population tools that will, with reasonable accuracy, determine a minimum amount of Native American markers in your DNA. Population genetics is in rapid flux right now, so a maximum amount determination is iffy at this time.

Tribal affiliation can't be directly determined, there are essentially no official American Indian reference populations to compare against because of US laws and our goofy racial politics.  But, if you have a high enough amount, you can make a rough cut determination between South of the Border NA, Western NA or Eastern NA. The higher the amount, the more you can zero in on possible tribal areas thru various means.

I think it was the 1990 census, last one I think I answered.  In the section for race, I printed very neatly something like "This sort of question is best rendered in German or Afrikaans, and is of course inherently offensive to an American".

Would be grand if a social media campaign took off to get everyone to check "Inuit - Chuckchi Sea branch" or whatever is the most obscure group with a box on that form.

Is there any penalty for answering however we please?  If not, then dammit let's show at least some humor and defiance as the country slips under the waves.  I think a mass erroneous answer campaign would be the perfect middle finger to to racist authoritarian anti-American cretins who have taken over the society and government.

270 Stringer Davis and non-purist, you may have to forgive any inaccuracies in my original post since I was going from memory.

"Inconclusive" since neither side sank a major combatant.

The Japanese looked at the maps and saw the Aleutians as a sword poised at the Home Islands.  What if B-17s and B-24s took off from there to strike Hokkaido was their thinking.  And after Doolittle upset their sense of complacency, is it any wonder they thought that?  So Operation MO was launched to take Attu and Kiska and thus deny the Americans possible airbases to attack the Home Islands.

Correct the A6M2 flipped and broke the pilot's neck.  And like the TAIU in SWPA would find out at Eagle Farms, the Zero was not tough.  It was maneuverable as all get out, but like the Spitfire it was not good in a dive.  The Japanese had a mania about reducing the weight which combined with the concept of always attacking meant no armor plating.  Hence it did not take a lot of hits to bring it down.

Heh. The Conservative government in Canada shit-canned the mandatory long-form census (there were penalties if you got one and didn't fill it out completely), and made it elective. The Liberals and the left-wing press, BIRM, twisted themselves into knots spinning this as an anti-freedom action.

277 Notice how there's all those different differentiations of all kinds of racial and cultural groups (who knew CZ Canal Zone was an ethnicity?), and then there's "White"? I grew up in this nation, but there was a differentiation between different groups of Quebecers. My mother's father's people were Prussian, and didn't have to speak first to my father's father's people who were from the Pommern, next door. Thought of them as Polacks, even though Prussia was closer to Poland than Pomerania, and they're both in Poland now. French did not socialize with Germans, and now we're all just "white"? If you're going tribal, go all the way.

So when my kid was born, there was a block to check on the birth certificate application. We were stunned. I started explaining the Indian bits (two strains), and the various Eurodetails, and the registrar (guess what "ethnicity") stopped me cold. "He black or not?" And that was that.

I don't really think that "mixed" does any good. A Certain Party is drooling for the day they can declare "white" a non-majority (you do know you'll never be a Minority, don't you?) and it's playing into their hands.

Funny how these things go. My mother was Ojibwa enough to enroll in the tribe if she'd wanted, and she hoped no one would find out.

Of course, they act like that's like, next Monday or something.

352 328 It is all of the same piece with the guy who compared the military vet to Obama and equated the two's life stories. People today have it incredibly well, historically speaking. For some reason (the inherent perversity of the species perhaps) humans do not do well with success. We start looking for conflict. We need it. We thrive on it. It helps to define us in our own eyes and plays a huge part in how we determine our own self worth. It allows us to feel solidarity with others and gives them a feeling of being part of something bigger than themselves. The fact that conflict is so absent in our lives means we have to magnify things that 100 years ago would have been considered of no consequence is the result. Racism, sexism, politics- it is all of the same piece.

353 Why was LaRaza listed as an ethnicity?  Why are so many others missing? Is all of us with European genes have melded together in one white lump because of the Medieval black plague?  I have full faith in the gov't to not pull my records and see I'm white and therefore, for disparity reasons, my hip replacement will have to go to an islander because whitey is getting too many of the allotted hips and the islander needs theirs.  Better luck next time, whitey.

That's a disturbing questionnaire.  I haven't been to my doctor in a while, and I'm still under Mr. Black's co. insurance.  But I expect it's coming.

And speaking of instusive forms, Jr. Black came in today with a permission slip for me to fill out, allowing him to take part in the SC "Communities That Care Youth Survey."  I looked through this 12 page questionnaire that is supposed to be anonymous.  The questions were amazing:  After identifying themselves by age, RACE, gender, etc., it moves on to your grades.  Pretty harmless.  Then comes the barrage of question upon question about drug.  Do you buy, do you use, if offered to you would you take it, specific drug use is asked; LSD, heroin, marajuana, oxycontin, a lots of others I'd never heard of.  Huffing paint or glue.  Lots of questions on alcohol use.  When, where, how much, at school?  What about your 4 closest friends?  Do they do drugs or drink.  How would you react to this situation (anger question to determine just how far you'd go), other questions about stealing if you could get away with it.  Then......came the gun questions.  Questions upon questions.  Have you ever handled a gun, used a gun, carried one into school.  Many questions related to handguns. Many questions to determine how angry you are.. I thought they were way out of bounds asking those personal questions.  Their responsibility starts and ends with teaching my kid the 3 R's.  This other stuff is not their business, unless there is a problem with a child that needs to be addressed with parents, counselor and the child in question.  I signed Jr. note that, no, he will be opting out.

Anna, whoa, thanks for that TAIU link - had not heard of them.  Sounds like a fun part of the war, such as that is.

Speaking of WWII Pacific theater trivia for no good reason, the museum where I volunteer had two separate small groups of people visit in the last few weeks from New Caledonia.  Pretty weird.  They all said WWII history is a big deal there (as it obviously was the biggest thing to ever happen there), and that a small museum is opening this year.  My oldest friend's father was an Army observation pilot who got a concussion on his first mission at Saipan and ended up spending most of the war doing paperwork in New Caledonia, a very pleasant assignment.

I know how it sounds.  But somehow, I still cannot fucking believe what this country is doing to itself and its medical system.

Not a large, diverse country in the world with anything close to our medical quality and success (and almost no small rich countries, either).  And some third-rate academic fascists and idiotic populist authoritarians are allowed to come in and simply dismantle it instead of fixing its (fairly easily solved) problems.

It's possible (barely?) that the catastrophe of O-care will be undone and some seriousness and sanity restored.  What can never be restored is my respect for the country or its populace, and most importantly for its failed and degraded institutions.

Also, re: the Aleutians. Last time I was out there I took the military hop from Elmendorf to King Salmon to Dutch Harbor to Shemya. Thank heaven they stopped so often--not bathrooms on those planes. Ended up taking a little over 12 hours all told. And Shemya is no picnic either. They still string ropes from one building to the other, in case of "weather." And there is always weather. It rains up. The difference between the North Pacific and the Arctic Ocean is dramatic, weatherwise. But in the middle of the island is a big slab of concrete with a huge piece of rebar curved and set into it. It is the plug. So far, nobody had pulled it, but I doubt many would miss that island if it just sank.

499 There was a retired fire chief who called into the John and Ken Show when the story broke. He said there was a perpetual conflict between FDs and the CHP. The FD people wanted their big truck positioned to provide a protective barrier against drunk drivers and people zooming along just not paying attention, while the CHP is focused on opening blocked lanes ASAP.

If it's late at night when traffic is low and the threat from chemically altered drivers is highest, my sympathies lie with the FD guys. I have to admit I had a very scary moment Tuesday in the late morning while stone cold sober. I was headed east on the 210 to get to a job site and allowed myself to get distracted for a moment. Ahead was an accident that left one car sideways across the left-most lane. I was going about 75 and had to react fairly quick to avoid smashing into that already smashed car. Fortunately there was nothing in the lane to my right.

Fact is, my wandering attention could have had really serious consequences if I'd been distracted just a second longer. In broad daylight and sober. So if the fire department is coming to a wreck at 2 AM, let them block some lanes for a while to keep them safe.

506 Anna, if you write a book on ATIU, I'll buy it.

First, whoever asked what happened to the Aleutian Zero- it got wiped out in a ground accident in 1945. Somebody ran it over and chopped the shit out of it with a Curtiss Helldiver, and some parts of it are left. By that point it wasn't a huge deal any longer. There are actually a fair number of surviving Zeros- some of the late-war Japanese fighters like the Tony are completely extinct.

As for the Aleutian campaign- Tully and Paschall's book "Shattered Sword" totally changed my thinking on the Aleutian campaign. Yamamoto didn't want a distraction- he wanted the American carrier force concentrated somewhere where he could destroy it. It was supposed to be Tsushima Straits all over again, with the USN standing in for the Imperial Russians like we had when they'd reenacted Port Arthur at Pearl Harbor. It happened too close to the planned invasion of Midway to be a diversion- it was an irrelevancy, an "expedient land grab" as those two put it.

Posted by: Dendritic at February 07, 2014 01:09 AM (8Z8Vp) I remember reading somewhere that the human race breaks down into people who love mushrooms and people who hate them. There aren't many who are indifferent. It's usually either one or the other. I'm in the h8ter category. I can tolerate them if they're in small pieces in a gravy over steak where the other flavors mask/overwhelm the mushrooms, but that's about it. Even back in college, when me and my friends were trying out the psychedelic kind, I could barely choke them down. They gross me out.

550 Adriane, hope you got some new socks.

If USS George Washington is not refuelled in 2015, the days of power projection just might be over for the US Navy.

US Navy is already saddled with two white elephant classes - Zumwalt and LCS.  Luckily they stopped the Zs at three hulls and a cost of about $1.5 billion each.  The LCS they are pushing ahead to build 32 of those sitting ducks.

Posted by: Anna Puma (+SmuD) at February 06, 2014 09:37 PM (BzAbx)

551 541 Putting down "mixed" for race does not, in fact, screw up the government's statistics.

The question goes to one of a number of what are known in the polling business as "ameliorated issues". The direct question referred to here is relevant to the issue of 'perception of racial identity', and that's it.

And that's also as far as the insurance industry wants to go any more. When insurers could use preexisting complaints, conditions, diseases and disorders in dealing with individual applicants and claimants, the questions in this area tended to be far more detailed, because the answers had real, practical meaning to insurers.

But now, no more: now, relationships between genetic background and types and frequencies of patients, complaints, conditions, diseases and disorders are left entirely to the direct care giver, the doctors, nurses and medical experts -- as they should be, and at the level where it actually matters.

I'm not saying the main posters on this website are in the business of deliberate misinformation, but this sure looks like it. Posted by: Deshroomius Bandersnatch at February 07, 2014 01:33 AM (w45V0) Hide posts from (w45V0)

563 GGE, our current surface ship heavy power projection is focused on long and intermediate range missiles.  The missile-packing destroyers and AEGIS cruisers took over most of the long range hard hitting that would have been done by the fast cruiser through super dreadnaught roles.  Ergo, destroyers "filled the role" of the old battleships.  They're also still filling their old roles.  Frigates filling some of the old WWI-WWII destroyer roles, as well as the older frigate roles.  Littoral Combat Ships are like shitty attempts to be mini-frigate/destroyer/spook heavy patrol boats, and not doing any of it well, from what I've been hearing.

570 #541- Blockbuster rethink, no. But it was the first book in English to bring in the Japanese scholarship that discredited Fuchida's "Uh, we were just about to launch when McClusky's SBDs showed up..." "misfortune" account of the battle. I learned a shitload about IJN carrier doctrine in that book, not to mention it did change my mind on the Aleutian phase of the battle. Plus they ran some numbers on USN v. IJN aircraft. Thinking of Midway as an unsinkable flight deck, it was four decks versus four decks. Most of the Japanese fleet was scattered around in a diversion plan and never got near an American ship.

572 "GGE, our current surface ship heavy power projection is focused on long
and intermediate range missiles."

Negative. Our current surface ship heavy power protection is done by dumb bombs and precision guided munitions dropped from attack aircraft. The projection of power...which was the main purpose of the battleship...is done by carriers now. That's why a carrier's airwing is referred to as it's main battery. Why waste a million dollar missile when a thousand dollar bomb will do the trick?

574 Fuck this, I'll go back to being Mary again tomorrow. Don't tell the day shift.

Anyway, quoting a paper I did for 530 at Norwich:

Kido Butai would be understrength for the attack.CarDiv5, Shokaku and Zuikaku, had returned from their detachment for the attempted invasion of Port Moresby, New Guinea. They also had to fight the Battle of Coral Sea while absent, dueling two American carriers they had not expected to find. Shokaku was heavily damaged, and Zuikaku was undamaged but had taken heavy losses to her air group. Shokaku went into drydock and Zuikaku was anchored until replacement planes and pilots were available.

The Americans had suffered at Coral Sea as well. The logistical response to their losses illustrates the philosophical differences between the American and Japanese navies. Lexington had been sunk, and Yorktown heavily damaged, her air wing mauled. LexingtonÂ’s surviving aircraft had landed on Yorktown, which limped to Pearl Harbor for repairs. Forty-eight hours after she entered the drydock, she steamed back out, still damaged but now functional. The air group was mostly borrowed from the Saratoga which was not yet back from a West Coast refitting period, and was reinforced by what was left of her own and LexingtonÂ’s.

Using YorktownÂ’s example as an ideal in how to reconstitute a damaged carrier, Zuikaku could have been given ShokakuÂ’s air group and joined Kido Butai for the Midway campaign, reclaiming Japanese numerical superiority. But the American notion of the carrier air group as a separate unit from the ship itself that could be rotated or replaced as needs demanded did not exist in the IJN. Pilots were another member of the shipÂ’s crew like signalmen or mechanics.

that's just wrong...accurate, but wrong...but yeah, a carrier battle group is a force to be reckoned with. And a carrier is not as fragile as you may expect, yeah it's a big fat floating target, but we learned a lot about survivability and damage control during WW2.

588 #580, that was the whole purpose of the Ticonderoga-class cruisers- a big floating SAM battery with a really bitching radar/computer system. Park one or two in every carrier group for when "Red Storm Rising" happened and there were a shitload of vampires inbound for your flattops.

Of course Clancy did explore what happens when you have 96 SAMs and 140+ inbounds...it gets embarrassing.

589 The Midway attacks were vain sacrifices.  Red Parks disobeyed orders and tried to use his mix of Buffaloes and Wildcats to mix it up with the First Air Fleet A6M2s.  His squadron was exterminated.

That left the SB2Us and SBDs completely undefended when they found the First Air Fleet.  They paid accordingly.  Ditto with the 4 22d Med Bomb Gp B-26A Maruaders trying to play torpedo bomber.  Then the sad fate of VT-8 Detached of 6 TBF-1 Avengers.  No fighter cover, only one made it back to Midway.  The B-17s with their high altitude bombing hit nothing.

So for actual results, Midway was a negative on the US side.  On the Japanese side with Tomonaga reporting the runway was still useable and First Air Fleet steering all over the ocean due to these attacks, it affected Nagumo and his staff to launch his second wave at Midway.

592 So, "Mary," do you have any memories of the rifle range building at Norwich?

There is something a real battleship can do that no other vessel can: take a direct hit from a torpedo and still float. Once you're talking about "close-in littoral combat," like for instance anything within sight of a coast, the high technology of one-inch aluminum wears a little thin. Electric submarines are very quiet if they never go far enough from port to need recharging. Mines and rubber boats are cheap.

We gave up on bomb shelters because no one could imagine one that could withstand a hundred-kiloton blast. So we just decided to die. Surface ships went that way: if there's a missile out there that can take you out regardless of armor, why even bother trying to withstand conventional torpedoes and mines?

Turns out the Strait of Hormuz is shaped a lot like the Skagerrak.

596 @584 - the 'battleship role' as ship-of-the-line came to an end when something proved capable of doing harm to them from beyond the range of their guns. See 'Prince of Wales' and 'Repulse'. They were still exceptional floating AA batteries and land-attack platforms, but a line of battleships no longer owned a 100 square mile chunk of whatever water it happened to be in.

602 GGE I am speaking in the time frame of the Battle of Midway.

Long term, the Solomon Islands and New Guinea campaigns were the graveyard for both IJN and IJA air power.  Japan just kept pouring in pilots and never rotating any out unless wounded.  So, besides the four fighter groups held in Japan and what was in the CBI, the cream of Japanese pilots died in those fetid jungles.

And she pulled into Pearl Harbor after those repairs the day the Battle of Midway ended.  IIRC they took the time during those repairs to pull her 8in barbettes off the flight deck.

612 CV-2 and CV-3 were converted battlecruiser hulls.  To comply with was it Washington or London Naval Treaties.  Language allowed the conversion of them into aircraft carriers since at the time, CVs were seen as scouting elements and not as main strike force.

CV-4 Ranger was purpose built as a carrier but less than 15,000 tons.  She stayed in the Atlantic for all of WWII.

CV-5 Yorktown and CV-6 Enterprise were sister ships of about 20,000 tons.  Built from the keel up as carriers.

CV-7 USS Wasp used up the last of the Treaty tonnage for carriers so was only 14,700 tons.

CV-8 was laid down as a modified Yorktown class to cover the gap before USS Essex CV-9 was launched.  Commissioned October 1941.  Hornet violated the Treaty tonnage limit.  She would be sunk on Oct 26th, 1942 at the Battle of the Santa Cruz Islands.

615 #604, Lex and Sara were converted heavy cruisers- one reason they took damage so well. Sara might have survived that second nuke at Bikini if she'd had a crew on board for damage control. Yeah, they would all have been dead of radiation poisoning in a week, but whatever.

Ranger (CV-4) was the first keel-up American carrier build, but she was small and weird and spent the whole war in the Atlantic.

Yorktown (5), Enterprise (6), and Hornet ( were sisters. Only the Enterprise made it, and in what I consider a national disgrace was scrapped in 1960.

Wasp (7) was a smaller sister built to use up the last of the allotted Washington Naval Treaty carrier tonnage. Too small to take a hit, she was in the Atlantic at first, pulled to the Pacific post-Midway, and was lost in '42.

After that it was an assembly line of Essex-class carriers.

Posted by: SGT Dan at February 06, 2014 10:15 PM (UWbv/)

616 I think only two carriers were converted cruiser hulls, to get back to the Washington Naval Treaty.

The ghost of Billy Mitchell lives on. Unless there is some nervous genius working wonderful anti-missile feats in a basement room in the Joshua Humphrey Building, the carrier is going to be obsolete as soon as the Chinese have their own GPS galaxy. I'm not sleeping well over ASW either.

When the Spanish had their bad day at Santiago, at least someone in Spain noticed. Here, maybe, not so much.

626 USS Wasp did two dashes to Malta with RAF fighters.  Churchill quipped about a wasp stinging twice.

She was transferred to the Pacific to compensate for the loss of Lexington and Yorktown.  It was after the start of Operation Watchtower, the invasion of Guadalcanal, that USS Wasp was struck by Long Lance torpedoes while carrying out refueling of her air group.  So *boom* she went down quick.

As opposed to Enterprise's half-sister Hornet at Santa Cruz.  Not only had she taken hits from Japanese air attacks plus one enemy plane crashing into her.  She was still afloat and was being fixed when Japanese forces got too close.  So US DDs were ordered to sink her.  They tried, Hornet refused to sink even with torpedo hits.  Then the DDs were chased off by the Japanese who tried to take Hornet in tow.  When that proved impossible, they finally gave the tough ship the coupe de grace and she finally sank.

On the bigger carriers, yeah.

Most of the smaller carriers, like the Independence-class were laid down as Cleveland class light cruisers and converted before they got to the superstructure construction stage.  Grandpa said Cowpens (CVL-25) (he was one of the signalman) took a pounding a couple of times, though nothing compared to the bigger carriers.

Once I get my Orange combo amp (hopefully this upcoming week), it should be a piece of cake. Right now, all I have is a little Behringer.

And, to be honest, I've mostly been overdriving it. Can't help myself; there's still a little wannabe metal god inside of me.

OK, that makes sense -- 1943, largest ship, new designation "Battle Carrier"....fast forward seventy years.....not the largest, small for current carriers.

Very impressive. The BH has sort of a NYC lefty upbringing buried in her that usually has her shy away from "militarism", even though she supports our troops.....but after a couple of hours onboard, she was ready to belt out a few verses of "We're gonna kick the Kaiser...." and throw a big hug on all the veteran volunteers who staff the place.

Some cutting fluids contain additives that are blended to work best only with certain metals or alloys.

Some shouldn't be used at all for very close tolerance work.

Can cause over cutting, chips scratching the finish or the chips not being chipped off correctly for the metal/alloy finish.

There's also heat to be considered and the tool that's being used and at what speed.

For most work it's not critical just match the type of fluid to the metal/alloy.

I grew up without TV, until the parents got one just to watch the  '76 Olympics. They would show almost entire competitions back then

Now I won't watch the Olympics because they never show  enough  of the actual competition.

It's all  personal interest  stories about the various athletes and you get lucky if they show more than 3 competitors.

It's not like we have a couple hundred channels available to spread out the viewing opportunities.

Apparently it has certain chemical additives/acids that help keep aluminum from clogging the tool when used at the correct speeds and on ALUMINUM.

So I learned not to just throw any old lubricant into the mix.

Also I'm not sure what you meant by anonymizer earlier, you can use an IP proxy service or website (the latter can be free but slow) which will change your hash. To be cleverer than a stick in a bucket full of mud, you would use something like Sandboxie or multiple machines with multiple proxies (or just multiple proxies in multiple tabs) and thus retain your entered username for each (less sock failure). Still like juggling porcupines for fun if you ask me.

Here's the thing -- I'm not a machinist and, at 51, probably never will be.....but I'm not a contractor and have remodeled a kitchen, I'm not a programmer and have designed an internal audit application (that the BH coded), I'm not an athlete but have been to places that roads don't go, I'm not a landscape architect but laid out the hardscaping in our garden.

So I'm looking at machining as a way to let me do kewl things, rather than a rigorous discipline. There are constraints -- a whole lot of machining can go horribly wrong and start throwing things about with wild abandon.....but I'm not interested in learning too much. When I want to do something new, I'll learn something new (and I'd like to know where the gateways are), but my muse may never lead me to do something more technical than a dovetail joint in metal.

I haven't had a little furry friend of my own for about 30 years....since I figured out that I was allergic. The state of the art, at the time, involved massive doses of antihistamines or repeated injections for subcutaneous allergen immunotherapy. I'd like to think my options are better now.

I should also like to note that I'm extremely phobic about being punctured, to the point where I'll have dental crowns done without anesthesia -- I find the actual pain to be less than my reaction to an injection -- in fact, I'm having a crown replaced next Tuesday, wish me luck. 740 Anyone with a smidgeon of electrical knowledge already knew how to take down a sub station.

What always (or at least since the terrorists won) got me is that they are so lightly protected, are placed in unsecure locations and the critical items aren't individually protected.

743 You all do notice that our vulnerability is due to the utilities and common carriers refusal to protect their equipment.

9/11 couldn't have happened without the refusal of the airlines to reinforce the cockpit doors and change their hijack protocols EVEN THOUGH THEY'D BEEN WARNED.

Also airport security was under the direction of FAA AND the Airlines themselves.

They FAILED MISERABLY, yet we paid/pay the price.

Now the Utilities are the target. They have for years used insecure infrastructure, including things that can be hacked, and ignored warnings to beef up their security. But they can't be bothered.

Every widespread black out could've been localized had the utilities done a better job.

The silliest thing about the whole shebang is that it involves hitting about 1 square inch at a significant distance -- and if they shrouded stations in something opaque, the chance of such a shot would instantly become insignificant.

758 "Her parents must be proud...or terrified!" Or indifferent, if she has parents. They might have been dysfunctional for their daughter to be so hateful. Then again, the daughter has the will of her own, and chose her own clique where she felt her paranoia would be celebrated. That's the sick point, celebrating hate and paranoia. I just don't get it, and can't even imagine a scenario they use to justify their insanity. What sorts of medication might these girls have been prescribed while developing to twist their brains like that? ... think test tube baby, born without affectionate gestation? ... or babies of mothers who gestated while taking drugs (prescription) creating children whose emotional-social development never connected with "others" as in the opposite gender?

Posted by: dirks strewn at February 07, 2014 04:48 AM (kfcYC)

768 Re: radfeminist PIV etc etc I went over there and read the first post and was chuckling to myself. Then I clicked a few more posts and the lady makes a few cogent, conservative points. Like these from "Intercourse and manufactured female pleasure: politics of love part III": --The great scam of the 20th century goes threefold: that womenÂ’s liberation consists in being free to be fucked by any man --having orgasms in being fucked by men --achieving equality to men with the pill, so we can now be fucked by men without consequences, that is dissociate PIV from reproduction. End of excerpt Hear me out folks, are these not points that conservatives male and female have been shouting from rooftops? Assuming that this radfeminist is young, and a product of a fratured home herself, and all she's known is the "zipless f**k" of Erica Jong's imagination with man after man, then--I may risk a public stoning here but I'll say it anyway--everything she's saying is correct. Sex without commitment, without personal connection, without a sense of continuity and future based on love, isn't that what she's angry about here? Don't conservatives feel that way too? We do but we know there's another way. It appears Radfeminist doesn't know. She appears to be immersed in a godless, familyless culture that she's trying to make sense of. Her heart knows it's a sad and empty existence, she just hasn't lived long enough to see there's another way, and all her university schooling has brainwashed her to reject the obvious alternatives like a spiritual community, or a conservative one. Wrongly, she blames men for her empty heart instead of the false tenents of feminism. Men, you're taking a terrible beating from Radfeminist over there, but in my opinion, she's a searcher. She seems intellectually honest based on the limited things she knows about life--she is misled and misdirected, not dishonest, and that's an important distinction. A real searcher will get past this radfem phase, and may yet find her way as a conservative woman. I know it seems strange, but I'm betting she makes the grade. Ace, thank you for bringing her blog to my attention. God works in mysterious ways, no? Wishing all men on this blog loving kindness, E.F.

"She's a font of misplaced rage. Name your cliché; Mother held her too much or not enough, last picked at kickball, late night sneaky uncle, whatever. Now she's so angry moments of levity actually cause her pain; gives her headaches. Happiness, for that woman, hurts."

I had to stop reading the comments. It reminded me of a NPR Book Review program where they interviewed an author who's an abortionist. Without exception, every caller(had an abortion) was simultaneously praising the doctor and sobbing uncontrollably. The event had a profound effect on their lives.
