Are NOT the Koch brothers contrary to what every Democratic hack will tell you.
In fact the Koch brothers don't even appear until position #59 - which means that UPS and the National Beer Wholesalers Association give twice what the K Bros do to the GOP yet get almost none of the irrational lefty hate.

So What Does Your Earwax Say About You?
The team of organic chemists says earwax is a "neglected body secretion" that can reveal a person's ethnicity and possibly much more information, Fox News reports. When they heated earwax samples from volunteers to release volatile organic compounds (VOCs), the researchers found that the earwax of Caucasians, which tends to be wet, could easily be told apart from the wax of those of East Asian descent, which is usually dry, with the former containing heavier amounts of 11 of the dozen VOCs they tested for.
Why I Wrote a Scathing Obituary About My Mother
"Marianne Theresa Johnson-Reddick born Jan 4, 1935 and died alone on Sept. 30, 2013. She is survived by her 6 of 8 children whom she spent her lifetime torturing in every way possible. While she neglected and abused her small children, she refused to allow anyone else to care or show compassion towards them. When they became adults she stalked and tortured anyone they dared to love. Everyone she met, adult or child was tortured by her cruelty and exposure to violence, criminal activity, vulgarity, and hatred of the gentle or kind human spirit." - Reno Gazette-JournalWeekly Commenter Standings

That obituary was written by a sad pathetic sack of shit. I give no shit about the mother, nor am I bothered by people who speak ill of the dead.
But to shit all over your own dead mother in a newspaper...that person is deeply disturbed and is every bit a miserable human being as they describe their own mother.

My dad was abused by his dad as a kid. Beaten, starved, neglected. And he, too, turned to crime to survive. Eventually he was shipped off to a Catholic boarding school near some aunts. He credits that with his survival.
But although we knew some of the horrible treatment he suffered at the hands of his father, he never treated his dad with anything other than respect. And he spent his life helping the cast-offs of society.
Maybe he was motivated by his hard life to do good. I think that's better than petty venting. Posted by: Y-not at March 02, 2014 10:57 PM (zDsvJ) Hide posts from (zDsvJ)

There is a hack to revert a Win 8 machine to the Win 7 shell.
The underlying internals of Win 8 are just polished, performance tuned Win 7 to begin with. That would have been okay. Until Redmond slapped this dopey new smartphone derived shell on top. Not okay.
I haven't tested the method but many on line claim it's a godsend.

If one were to assume there is a 50% to 110% chance that the US dollar will collapse due to the enormous weight of our oppressive debt...and our idiot leadership, in say 2-5 years...
How much would you be willing to bet on this?
I am contemplating a significant bet with a percentage of my retirement account, such as it is.
Silver is at $21 now. If I buy now, and silver goes to $500-$1000 due to currency collapse in several years, I can continue to eat and pay bills. If it goes to $10, I loose no less than any other crummy investment I've made in recent years.

Or at a minimum find the toughest, most hardbitten and cynical home inspector in your area, before you buy, and turn them loose with orders to find and notify you of EVERYTHING that is likely to go wrong.
"I'm doing the kitchen, which lead to replacing the entire old drain plumbing. 50 years of h2s had eaten the iron pipes away to basically nothing. I had to have the water off for 36 hours, which was mostly spent crawling around under the house taking out old and putting in new pipes."
::: Four Yorkshiremen :::
Oh, you could get _under_ the house. Luxury! We would have _loved_ to be able to get under the house. It would have been like a palace to us!
Seriously, going underneath houses is a giant pain in the ass. Dangerous. No fun. There are things that bite. Dust. Webs. Sharp edges. Things to hit your head on. It doesn't smell great. It's horrible for claustrophobics. But at least you can get to things and fix them. Consider how much fun it would have been if those decayed pipes were under a nice sturdy reinforced concrete slab.

The scrappy independent Crimean Tatar TV station ATR is still on the air, after a night of rolling “The Patriot” with Mel Gibson (on the American revolution) mixed with webcam footage of the armed men strolling up and down their parking lot outside. While the State TV station was taken over in Simferopol, and ATR has been gathering its personnel together and expecting the worse, they are still broadcasting. Perhaps the authorities need to keep at least some alternative sources of news open.is --

Got plenty o' thoughts -- few of 'em happy ones.
What we're seeing now is an epidemic of consumption, strong disincentives to save, appropriation of the interest savers deserve in order to fuel government malinvestment on an unprecedented scale, and massive fraud and graft. Physical ownership of precious metals hedges some of those risks....but have a care, paper "ownership units" or interests in asset-holding trusts do not.

Banks often loan out depositor assets, and unfortunately, many gold depositories pull the same crap.
The German government demanded repatriation of over 400 tons of gold the Federal Reserve was supposed to have stored for them ( they paid rent for the vault space ).
They refused to do so, and are only repatriating 5 tons at a time ... and the bars they did repatriate did not have any of the original markings on them. So not only did they "lend" the bars, but the probably sold them, and the Fed didn't even own them in the first place ... while fraudulently charging storage fees.
I suggest buying gold or silver and storing it yourself.

One of them. Guy inserts a homemade sex toy up his squeakhole. Sends him to the ER with all the signs of a heart attack. When the doctor gets the X-ray back and sees what is there, well pregnant pause was in order. So he goes get an item from the Obstectrics a machine that uses negative pressure to convince a baby to come on out and get taxed. Needless to say the doctor successfully delivered a sex toy.

So, you're thinking of buying 100 ounces of silver at $20, when you already know that the person selling it to you only has 20 ounces on-hand and has IOUs for the other 80.....and expecting that someone will pay you $500 for the same 100 ounces of gold when TSHTF, and the guy who sold it to you has no ounces on-hand and 100 ounces of IOUs? Even if the market is open, I'm not seeing that as a probable outcome.

Late to the conversation, I'm sure.
Has everyone seen the old schoolhouse rock video where they celebrate how banks multiply money? You put a dollar in the bank who lends it to some guy to buy a house. The guy he bought it from puts it in his bank who loans it to some chick who charged a pair of shoes and her shoe company banks it. That banks then loans it as student aid to a fifth year pot studies major who 'invests it in gardening tools. The hardware store banks it, and so on, and so on. Cycle 20 times and lookie, 20 different people got to spend the dollar, so success!
Except all those people who spent it now owe it, plus interest. And there's still just the one dollar. Well, there's other dollars, but they've all been through the same multiplication. So if everyone pulls their banks accounts because they'd rather have the dollar on their person, only one can have it and kaboom.
Since the banks got away with doing this with dollars for a long time, it's no surprise they did the same with other valuables they have access to (despite it being generally illegal for precisely the above reason).
And that's not even getting into the Corzine situation where he disappeared a billion and a half dollars, and gold belonging to other folks which he hadn't leant out, was seized to pay the cash losses.

I know a couple of people who committed to gold as their long term ace in the hole (apologies to the esteemed Ewok proprietor) many decades ago.
One of them held a stash of K-coins from the late-seventies early-eighties constant dollar peak until the very nadir of the market, finally lost faith, and sold them all at an absolutely colossal loss.
He bottom ticked the decline to within a couple of months.
I remember thinking at the time he sold, "Holy crap, if this guy with his iron determination is finally selling, I should be buying with both fists." Best investment advice I never took. Goddamnit.

You buy your shares and so far, so good.

are pretty rare.
I looked into it once for a self directed IRA. There are some in which you purchase the gold/silver and then they hold it for you in a safe guarded place, but the problem comes in that they charge you storage fees which can eat away at your savings. (you can't take possession as it is just like cashing out).

I still consider the US stock market to be too risky for an IRA.
If you denominate the DJI in ounces of gold, the Dow has gone from 43 ounces in 1980, to 14 ounces today. Basically, anyone investing in the US stock market has lost more than a third of their real purchasing power over the last 40 years.
There are some reputable metal IRAs out there, but they may not be fungible in the event of a zombie apocalypse ... you still take your chances.

Tillable land with water you control.
Or that you can pump out of a durable aquifer without external energy inputs and/or government subsidies.
There's a metric shit-ton of superb ag land in central/southern Commiefornia going fallow (and bankrupting the people who own it) because it came down to a choice between giving them their subsidized government water, and possibly endangering an obscure bait fish, the Delta smelt.
The obscure bait fish won.
WRT "external energy inputs", there are lots of farmers not addicted to subsidies, who are just fine on water until the supplies of diesel to run their pumps are interrupted, in which case they promptly crap out on their crops.
Note that supplies of diesel have not yet been declared to be a fundamental 'oomin right.

Paper may be valueless, but you can still trade, say, welding or electrician skills for food.
And of course, anyone who can give a good blowjob is welcome in most cities.

Part of this involves the skills and supplies of the trade. I've got a coil of romex and some random switches and boxes in the garage, for instance, in case I need to be a jackleg electrician.
And then, there's marketing.....Helen Thomas could have been the ultimate artiste in the art of giving a hummer -- but with her potential customers limited to the blind......

For a while there, people were telling me there was a vogue on television for "period" householder shows. Take a randomly selected modern family and have them live for a few months the way that a family of previous centuries would have had to live. With all of the exhausting inconveniences of same.
Never saw any myself, but I am told the genre are often called "_____ House". Colonial House, Frontier House, et cetera.
I'm wondering about "EMP House" or "Hyperinflation House" or "Lethal Pandemic House".
Any one of which will surely test how strong their inhabitants are. Nonmechanized agriculture is a stone cold bitch for people who are not in sub-fortysomething exceptional physical shape.

The Last I saw anywhere it was somewhere around 30 here and estimated at 100 (!) in London.
This multiplicative effect is also why you can have 2 or 3 trillion physical dollars in circulation and have the fed print another trillion in a years time and not immediately blow the monetary system all to hell (the fact that so much of this is purely digital is more of a complication). In stead of expanding the money supply from 3 to 4 (which should immediately cause 33% inflation), it's an expansion from, say, 3x30=90 to 91 (a little more than 1% inflation, and who would even notice that). It even brings the overall multiplier down (90/3=30 to 91/4=22.75).
At least until the new money gets multiplied, which takes some time.
Oh, and it has to continue being multiplied because while I mentioned in my previous comment that the whole thing blows up if everyone lays claim to the same dollar, that's not the only death available. Since the multiplication occurs due to lending, anyone paying off their debts is working against it. So if you get a point where people are generally paying off their debts, the chain of multiplication unwinds and the Fed gets its dollar back. Except that every step a long the way there was interest being charged and there are no dollars available to pay it (since each of them is busy unwinding, too).
And note that none of this systemic situation is affected by 'working hard', 'meaning well', or 'being responsible.' Obviously some individuals who make better decisions can manage to not be the points where the system breaks, but that just (mathematically) means the breaks occur elsewhere, as they must happen.
Oh by the way. Since the population of earth, a country, or whatever group this system applies to is finite, you will reach a point where there aren't enough people to take on the new debt that keeps it all going.

There is a story about this....
So, the deal is, things were a bit rough about a month ago.....and I'd noticed that Merovign had this in his quotes and asked him about it. It's a script to load into your browser so that you can blank off a particular commenter. So I loaded it.
I've used it three times -- once for a guy who was banhammered later the same night; once for someone who later disappeared (don't know if banned); and once on a 'ron in good standing who I felt was messing with an 'ette in an unkind and unhelpful way [despite having run off the 'ette, I unbanned him later that same night....and saw the 'ette in question some days later][it was probably helpful for me not to interact with the 'ron in question while this was still an active issue].
OTOH, I've been questioned about the obnoxious "Hide posts from (XXXXX)" message well over a DOZEN times. I fully intend to go into the script and replace it with "(X)" or "*". I just haven't gotten to it yet.
I'd recommend getting the script from Merovign, as it is very handy -- but it's not unflawed.

Minor quibble. The Somalis have heavier weapons than the Oaktown crowd do.
RPGs, mortars. And "technicals", which are basically Toyota pickup trucks, with whatever random leftover weaponry from the era when Somalia was a Soviet client state welded into the cargo bed. Usually machine guns, but sometimes bigger.
It is rumored that the most feared technical is the type with the quad 23mm cannon rig from the ZSU-23-4 "Shilka" antiaircraft system. I would shit down my pants leg if something like that even pointed anywhere close to where I was standing, never mind having it actually shoot. I can't believe you could put that in a lightweight truck without destroying or tipping the truck.

You can't. Even a 12.7mm will be impossible to hold on a point of aim with a commercial suspension. You have to worry about the first few rounds - the rest are going high and wild. I say this as a guy who has footage of a LAV with a 105mm on it's side.

I can't recall where I read it, but it was from someone talking about their now elderly father in a tiny town way up a holler atop a crick in West Virginia, darkly predicting many decades ago that, "You know, a day will come when people here will have to lock up their barns at night."
And at the time that sentiment was voiced, it was total apocalyptic science fiction. Lock your barn? Are you kidding?
Yet fast forward to the present, and yep, if you live in that part of WV right now, you had better lock up the barn if there's anything of value inside.
Posted by: torquewrench at March 02, 2014 09:20 PM (gqT4g)
All of them. No exceptions.
Yup. All that matters is the time frame involved. If you're particularly clever (and evil) you come up with something that can last a good century or more so that everyone who set it up, and anyone they cared about is long dead before it ends. And when the end approaches, the people that have to deal with it have known no other way than trying to keep it going.
We're livingmin fantasy land now. Eventually, such as when the Dollar is no longer the reserve currency, it all comes down.
Yeah, the sheer volume of dollars in use around the rest of the world is a yet further complication. I don't know if there is any estimate of it. I don't know where those even go at the end. Probably wallpaper, since we aren't going to be trading whatever stuff we happen to have for it. What it will mean is that our ability to import dries up overnight, which fortunately isn't an issue since we used our turn as a great world power as an opportunity to set up a system of colonies that will continue supplying us with goods no matter what.
Oh, wait we didn't do that, and we're slashing the military as we speak.
Fuck.

Been generally able to look at a numbers situation and see a problem with it since high school chemistry (okay, it's not that hard to realize that if the exponent in your scientific notation is significantly distant from 23, something has probably gone wrong).
Mostly got it over the last decade-had a conversation with a friend (who wasn't really a numbers guy) around 9/11 (unrelated to it, I just remember the conversation in terms of where he was living at the time) who had issues with money being debt. She's not going anywhere....it's just that we had a bit of an [extended] emotional discussion today regarding our future plans and the distinction slipped in sideways.
We both have managed people in California, and we've both seen peers ruined by absolutely bullshit lawsuits about "discrimination" -- as if a manager who couldn't discriminate between: net contributors and net problems; cases requiring discipline or tolerance; or individuals who could or couldn't benefit from mentoring to advance to the next level....could be more than worthless. That's what management is -- discrimination! Remaining unmarried helped firewall each other from the prospect of total loss....and, to boot, resulted in tax savings sufficient to send us on glorious vacations around the world.
I didn't let it get to me over the last 25 years....but it has evidently been a perpetual annoyance to her.

I believe we are of a similar age, although I have a few years on you, and I think women of my generation want to be married ladies.
Somewhere in the back of our minds, despite all your loving words, is the thought that you don't want to marry us, that we don't meet some standard, regardless of what very good reasons you may have for not wanting to get married.
And she may well be content to remain a fiancee, just as long as you demonstrate that you would marry her if she wanted it that badly.
Congratulations! Posted by: Tammy-al Thor at March 03, 2014 01:51 AM (Pfvig) Hide posts from (Pfvig)
You've pretty much got how the conversation went.....which wasn't entirely how I'd romantically thought about it. I was thinking about something in the future on one knee, with "....if you'll have me." What happened was more upright just a bit ago with, "of course, I'd....."

This is what I do for a living. I run a digital X-ray system for Imaging, a X-ray florescence system for metallic coating thickness (and basic elemental percentages) and an EDS system that works backwards from the fluorescence system for elemental analysis. But I started with film and some companies still require it for documentation.

A word of warning... I am the furthest thing from a girly-girl that you could imagine, and had no interest whatsoever in a big fancy wedding and ballgown. UNTIL, one of my cousins gave me a bridal magazine.
