The Great State Shakedown

As the Blue State model begins to fail state politicians are getting desperate for additional revenue and looking for the perfect victims: out of state individuals and business who they can tax but who are unable to vote them out of office. Make no mistake - taxation without representation is a key part of the new blue revenue model.

New York and New Jersey are particularly egregious offenders with New York demanding full income tax from anyone who works for a NY-based company no matter where they live and New Jersey holding companies' trucks ransom for passing through the state.

Now this would seem to be a violation of the Commerce Clause but the Supreme Court has repeatedly deferred to Congress to hash out the details. And Congress has declined to do anything about this and so interstate commerce is slowly being squeezed by the grasping hands of failing states.

At least with the Articles of Confederation you knew exactly which state had dominion over you and your purse.

Stretching the limits of the U.S. Constitution's Commerce Clause to the breaking point, local revenue agents have seized out-of-state trucks simply passing through their jurisdiction, refusing to release them until the firms that dispatched them fork over corporate income taxes. Finance departments have slapped out-of-state businesses with bills for thousands of dollars in corporate back taxes, based on little more than a single worker visiting the state sometime during the year. And tax agents have targeted employees who work remotely for in-state firms, claiming that they owe personal income taxes, even when they've never stepped foot in the taxing state.
Telecommuting can now be a tax trap for employees, too. New York State now considers those working remotely for New York-based businesses to owe income taxes on all their work, whether they visit the state or not. New York employs a "convenience of the employer" rule to apply these taxes. It holds that telecommuters for New York firms are effectively physically present in the state, wherever they happen to be. A Hawaiian telecommuter to New York, in other words, might wind up paying income taxes in two states-his home and that of his employer.
According to congressional testimony by owners of trucking companies and the American Trucking Associations, beginning around 2000, revenue agents from New Jersey's department of taxation began descending on truck stops, weigh stations, and loading docks and waylaying trucks, demanding that the owners pay at least Jersey's $1,100 minimum corporate-franchise tax before letting the drivers proceed. Many of the vehicles-about 40,000 have been stopped-worked for companies with zero connection to New Jersey, other than making a pickup or delivery there. New Jersey was, in essence, charging a $1,100 entry fee into the state.

California's Chicken Law and the Commerce Clause

California is essentially imposing a tariff on all out-of-state eggs by demanding the hatcheries they come from meet California chicken coop standards despite the fact that the FDA has stated there is no legitimate reason for discriminating against non-CA eggs.

Californian voters approved a ballot measure in 2008 requiring California egg producers to provide additional room in chicken coops for egg-laying hens. The ballot initiative, according to research done by the University of California at Davis, will increase the costs of egg production in the state by 20 percent, putting out-of-state egg producers at a large competitive advantage

...Justice Anthony Kennedy, writing in the Lopez decision, added that regulations that treat in-state and out-of-state businesses the same are still unconstitutional if they overly burden interstate commerce: "One element of our dormant Commerce Clause jurisprudence has been the principle that the States may not impose regulations that place an undue burden on interstate commerce, even where those regulations do not discriminate between in-state and out-of-state businesses." According to Missouri's attorney general, the law passed in California outlawing the eggs produced under the practices generally used in the rest of the United States clearly offends the Constitution.

John McCain: Obama Was the Smartest Person in the Room

Well just remember that McCain graduated 5th from the bottom of his class (894 out of 899) and seems to believe that the better man won in 2008.

I thought when he had a couple of dinners with Republican senators, we really had a good environment there. Because he is a very, very articulate and attractive guy in a setting with eight or nine senators and him. Because he was smarter than the rest of us. But I don't see that now. I don't see any of that.

Full disclosure: McCain has been one of my least favorite Republicans for 15+ years now and I believe every one of the rumors about his possible defection to the Democrats after 2000.

USA-CAMPAIGN/

No Means No and Also Yes Means No. Maybe.

The Forum on Consent, which was also open to the public, featured several panel participants who spoke to the question of what we understand as "consent." The theme was similar to a campaign launched by a Nova Scotia coalition earlier this month - the More Than Yes campaign - which contended that "sexual consent is more than just a yes." According to that campaign, and echoed by the forum participants at McGill on Wednesday, real consent "must be loud and clear. Sex without enthusiastic consent is not sex at all. It's sexual assault or rape." . . .

Defining rape down - until mere unenthusiastic sex or enthusiastic sex but with eventual regret = a sexual assault. Next stop: all PIV.

Targeted by Islamic Death Threats? No Speaking in Public Facilities For You!

Seems like an easy way to shut people up. And remember that activities which are rewarded will be repeated.

Next on NJ's Ban List: Any .22 Rifle With a Tube Magazine

Which means the venerable Nylon 66 would become an illegal assault weapon.

The New Jersey Assembly's Law and Public Safety Committee was scheduled to hold a public hearing on Monday (postponed for snow) about a bill that reduces the maximum magazine capacity from 15 to 10.

Since the legislation covers both detachable and fixed magazines, it has the effect of to banning popular, low-caliber rifles.

...Thus, the experts found that at least 43 common rifles would suddenly be considered a prohibited "assault firearm," such as the .22 caliber Marlin Model 60, Remington Nylon 66 and Winchester 190.

11 French Travel Tips for Visiting America

You have to be nice to ugly pets and children, the showers are all retarded, and the Americans eat like animals.

Americans eat and drink anything and at any time of the day: in the street, in a meeting at work, in the car, on the subway, in the elevator, the movies ... So, there are drink rests everywhere: cinema seats, baby strollers, shopping carts at the supermarket, in cars, some bike handlebars.

The portions are often gargantuan in the United States (but you already knew that). Americans are not embarrassed to ask for a "doggy bag" to take home. They'll even take home the rest of the tortillas appetizer.

On the other hand Americans generally don't steal from you and will help in an instant and also expect you to help strangers as well:

A passerby stumbles and sprawls in the street, an old lady can barely control Brutus at the end of a leash, a small tricycle driver loses control of his vehicle. Politeness means, of course, that you come and help all these people. American culture wants you to quit all your activities and rescue the unfortunate. In America, you cannot pretend to not have noticed all these little quirks. You must rush to provide assistance to all who need it.

So, there are drink rests everywhere: cinema seats, baby strollers, shopping carts at the supermarket, in cars, some bike handlebars. --Which is ironic, because in France you can drink alcohol publicly --but few places in America (outside of certain places in Texas) allow that. 89 "A passerby stumbles and sprawls in the street, an old lady can barely control Brutus at the end of a leash, a small tricycle driver loses control of his vehicle. Politeness means, of course, that you come and help all these people. American culture wants you to quit all your activities and rescue the unfortunate. In America, you cannot pretend to not have noticed all these little quirks. You must rush to provide assistance to all who need it."

They need to update that guide.

That's the way it used to be, and that's the way I was brought up, and that's what I did for many years of my adult life, but I now default to avoiding involvement. At least where I live.

Because Commiefornia's high court ruled that if you are a Good Samaritan, and you have attempted in good faith to assist a stranger in difficulty or at risk, then if said stranger isn't happy with how things turned out, you can be sued for every penny.

And believe me, there is no shortage of sleazy contingency-fee attorneys in Commiefornia ready to do just that.

95 Written by a 14 yr old kid. Pretty cool. Our generation will be known for nothing. Never will anybody say, We were the peak of mankind. That is wrong, the truth is Our generation was a failure. Thinking that We actually succeeded Is a waste. And we know Living only for money and power Is the way to go. Being loving, respectful, and kind Is a dumb thing to do. Forgetting about that time, Will not be easy, but we will try. Changing our world for the better Is something we never did. Giving up Was how we handled our problems. Working hard Was a joke. We knew that People thought we couldnÂ’t come back That might be true, Unless we turn things around (Read from bottom to top now)

101 Found CA Gold Coins Likely Stolen From US Mint in 1899

"Likely" is a stolen base. The article itself has an update:

A few of the coins in the hoard were from different U.S. Mints and from earlier in the 19th century. It could be the case that the Federal Government might only be able to prove that the coins amongst the hoard which can be confirmed as coming from the San Francisco Mint in 1899 must be returned, while the finders could contest that the remaining coins were not part of that robbery and thus not necessarily stolen property.

But even that is misleading. If the US government wants to claim these coins (or some portion of these coins) are from some robbery, they have to prove it. Merely finding reports about some robbery that occurred during the right timeframe doesn't do it. There were people legally acquiring the same types of coins during the same timeframe. Proving that these particular coins came from a robbery is going to take more than digging up some old newspaper article out of the archives. Until that happens, it's just speculation.

104 Articles of Confederation
according to high school civics textbooks of fifty years ago, had several problems. The National Government had no tax income, and the individual colonies were taxing each other with tariffs, duties, and fees whenever trade goods crossed borders.

The result was a new Federal Constitution which claimed for the federal government, the power to regulate inter state commerce..

So here we are again, repeating the mistakes of the past. Taxing trade between the states merely for crossing a state border enroute to somewhere else. Special state regulations that require products sold in that state to meet restrictive characteristics.

But it really doesn't matter anymore since we have long ago ignored the plain language the US Constitution was written in.

There is no 'justice system' where laws apply equally to everyone. Instead we have lawyers, and rule by Imperial Decree, and Political Officers.

Then thread the nut a couple threads onto one bolt. Put the burny stuff into the nut now sealed at one end with a bolt. Then thread the other bolt into the nut lightly hand tight. Now drop off the garage roof onto the driveway and BANG.

116 FTR Flash Fighters were toy cars (cast iron, slightly bigger than Matchbox or Hot Wheels, size of small Tonak trucks) that had a little hatch underneath, in which one planted a cap (the cylindrical ones, like pulled off from a multi-shooter ring). The cars had a bumper in front, that when the car slammed into anything (they came with launchers), would pop the cap. There were of course "bad guy" and "good guy" Flash Fighters --they came with mini-comic books with their stories-- and of course the "bad guy" ones looked cooler.

122 Radiocommunication towers are another target of criminally greedy states. A small company I worked for purchased a couple of former AT&T microwave properties with 300 foot towers, paying between $10K and $30K per facility. That next year, we were uniformly hit with tax assessment valuations between $400K and $800K.

We were dumbfounded. We appealed, were rejected by the counties, and sued. We learned some used an absurd method of having some local idiot county worker drive by and count antennas, then multiply a revenue estimate for each antenna. Besides the fact that this amounts to a hidden wholesale sales tax applied through property taxes, they completely made no sense in our case as these antennas counted were old AT&T horns from the 1940s and 50s, still on the tower and dead to the world for 20+ years.

Each year, we'd appeal, be rejected, sue, spend $10K per site in legal fees rather than agree to the valuation. They admitted to us that they did this as it was a major revenue raiser, since most companies are out of state and don't sue per the expense of having to have local counsel.

Today, if someone's working in government, they're most likely involved in what would be criminal racketeering in the private sector.

138 And the value of the stolen goods was just IIRC the $10,000 face value of the coins at the time and not the $10-million it is today. If the coins hadn't been stolen but stayed at the mint for circulation, today's government wouldn't have any of it let alone $10-million or even the one extra-special million-dollar coin.

At worst IMHO the couple should pay out the 10-grand 1900 value if the theft is proven. They'll still have to pay taxes on the rest of the current value as they sell so it's not like the government isn't getting its pound of flesh.

Still, I knew something like that was coming although I figured the government would claim that the gold should have been turned in to the government during FDR's gold seizure and that would be the excuse. They should have sold them slowly over many years and not reported it.

So, I went out and got one of these:

So far, I'm highly impressed with the bang-per-buck ratio.

I'd spend the hour with Mr. Putin.  Preferably, competing against him in an IDPA match.  He'd acquit himself reasonably well, I'm sure, but I'd put the whuppin' on him, for sure.

An hour with TFG?  No.  Way.

No.  Respect.

Mr. Putin may well be the sly, evil, diabolical scheming tyrant he appears to be.  But, he's a patriot to his country, unapologetically so.  I don't necessarily like him, but I bear him the grudging respect due his competency and comportment.

Conversely, I'm but ashamed of TFG, in every respect, and in every instance.  He shames our Nation, and I shall never, ever, forgive him this.

I wipe my shoes of him, I shake his dust off of my feet.  He is accursed and an affront to righteousness itself.  May history treat him as harshly as he richly deserves.

I suspect they were concerned about being prosecuted. 10 million is an awful lot of money, even if you spread it out over many years. If the government found out, who know what all the charges an eager federal prosecutor is going to come up with. There's the tax code, money laundering, and since the coins were possibly stolen from a US mint, who knows what laws are applicable about receiving the proceeds. Whatever happens now, they don't have to worry about criminal charges.

Pretty hard to sneak that into the rare coin market even over time. And there is no story where the Govt wouldn't come after you for their cut. 208 The book "The Nightingale's Song" has parts about McCain in it. He was an obnoxious nightmare at Annapolis. At the time, it was the legacy of his grandfather, who was a famous flag officer in WWII that carried him through (his father was just a Captain at the time, I think). He was a terrible student, stupid AND lazy. He crashed a couple of A-4's before getting shot down in N Viet Nam. He suffered their terribly, but then he came home and ditched his wife for Cindy, who was rich and really a babe then (years younger than McCain). He does blame himself for the failure of his first marriage, but I think he had big political ambitions even then and Cindy's money (from the Budweiser distributorship her family owned in Arizona) helped a lot. Friendly to Reagan (I think he conned him) then the Keating affair in the S & L crisis (which should have finished his career), yet he survived. I heard him go nuts on the Michael Reagan radio show back in 2000. Michael had endorsed no one yet, and modestly favored McCain. And McCain went NUTS on the air, and Michael actually hung up on him. He's a weird old man that should have been voted out of the Senate years ago.

That is a heckuva question. As I discussed previously, it is exceedingly dangerous to be married in California and for either one of you to supervise employees -- we both know people who were sued for trumped-up "discrimination" charges. The manager starts off losing his job, the employer settles quickly giving them the assets they need to vindictively go after the manager, and the resulting legal fees and damages clobber not just the manager, but his entire family. So I would hope that it'd be slightly after we shake the dust from this place off our heels.

From what I understand, the Thais nibble on street food constantly (and yet somehow manage to stay thin, which I do not if I indulge my love of pad thai too often). So it's not just those crazy Americans who eat on the street. The frogs have an aversion to snacking because their cuisine is so loaded with calories - if they went around eating Brie and chocolate mousse all day long, they'd soon get tubby (what's Hollande's excuse?)

I have to admit, I can understand the weariness of the French guy at hearing the word "inspiring" constantly. The movie was "inspiring," Obama is "inspiring," the story of the athlete's come-back is "inspiring." I'm sick of it too, although the cliche that really makes me grind my teeth is "raise awareness." 234 Meanwhile in DC, the grad school seminar masquerading as a Presidential administration continues on its merry way.

The other day, Merkel confided in Obama during a phone conversation that she thought Putin was "in another world," losing touch with reality.

Obama promptly let that comment leak to the press.

Causing considerable embarrassment to an ally during an international crisis. (And ensuring allies will no longer speak openly in private with American officials.)

Now, we have the Obama White House saying for the record that Obama himself does not think Putin is "unhinged", but is acting for domestic political reasons. In other words, Obama saying that Merkel's assessment is wrong.

And going on to say, incredibly, that Obama wants Merkel -- the same person he just embarrassingly quoted as saying Putin is nuts, and the same person who Obama then further embarrassed by publicly contradicting her assessment -- to act as a mediator between Putin and himself!

I'd love to be a fly on the wall in that meeting room, but I don't think my lifespan would be very long, as the temperature plummeted towards near absolute zero.

287 If you follow the links all the way back, it turns out that the whole thing about the government confiscating the coins is based on the following claim:

The published news item was discovered in the Haithi Trust Digital Library and was provided by Northern California fishing guide Jack Trout, who doubles as a historian and collector of rare coins.

So, Jack Trout finds this old story about the mint robbery, and the internet plays "what if".

But, there is nothing anywhere about the government itself saying that the coins that were found are the same as the coins that were stolen, much less that they will be confiscated. Just because there was a robbery back when does not mean that these are the same coins.

295 I left IL, far west Chicagoland, yesterday a.m., in my 4WD truck, intending to make San Antonio in two days. Figured I could make Arkadelphia, AR, the first night. I did not realize what that sleet and snowstorm did to eastern AR from below I40 up into S MO. Icemageddon. Truckopalypse on the interstates. Thousands of people slept in trucks and cars on I55 and I40 in AR last night, the roads like a frozen bombed out HoChiMinh trail, all the hotels filled, all the gas stations ran out of fuel, all trapped people using the frozen interstates as toilets because the glaze of white to the R or L off the road was impossible to walk on. Fucking nightmare. Fortunately, I was in a total stop close enough to an exit ramp where I could 4WD down the berm and side and get off, and a friend in Blytheville took me in. Today, it took me almost seven hours to wend my way down along 55 and then W on 40, on parallel state highways, the interstates still parking lots, and finally clear the area, halfway to Little Rock. Worst highway storm mess I ever saw. AR has no equipment to deal with it, and will just have to wait until it warms up later this week to get things moving.

313 Fungible has a legal definition.
http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/fungible?s=t

But in the case of gold the meaning morphs.  Gold is called fungible because it can be melted down into other forms, unrecognizable* as the original.  Turn those coins into gold statues maybe.

*Except in cases like years back when the Swiss did an assay of some gold in their vaults.  Because of certain trace elements, it proved the gold came from fillings.  Yep, WWII German gold made from the dead of the concentration camps.

319 Re: Defining rape down...The solution is legalized prostitution.  That is the only way in which both parties CLEARLY understand the transaction and terms can be set beforehand.  The fact is, men are already paying for sex.  Most of them just don't know it.

Were prostitution legalized, most women would come to their senses regarding the true definition of "rape."  As my "big university" experience taught me, a lot of young women use sex as a weapon to get more attention from the boys than the other girls.  When they realize that it didn't work because being easy does not win his heart...well, it must have been rape.

I was using my iPad to read what stupidity Graham spouted earlier on Twitter & canÂ’t copy & paste from it.
I made your roasted tomatoes for dinner tonight. I added some mozzarella cheese. I used two packages of Campari tomatoes & ate all of them. After seeding they did not fill a small baking pan. 366 Wow the post apocalyptic economists are busy tonight. How would one have any idea how long their silver hoard would last in a true collapse when they is no way of knowing what the costs of goods would be, let alone, if there were any goods. One would have to survive the mass die-off in order to be positioned to buy off a warlord anyway, but that won't be a problem for us, as we will all be the warlords, of course ... How many of y'all really believe that such a collapse is imminent? I just don't buy it, more like wishful thinking, IMHO. I've seen plenty of doomsayers say doom for my entire life, but then, they just have to go back to work on Monday like the rest of us ... My boss was horrible to me,” Lauren said. “For people to tell me that doing porn and having sex, which I love, is more degrading than being a waitress and being somebody’s servant and picking up after somebody and being treated like a lesser, second-class citizen, that literally makes no sense. To be perfectly honest, I felt more degraded in a minimum wage, blue-collar, low paying, service job than I ever did doing porn.” mmmmkkkkkkaaaayyyy

nice ONT thread Maetenloch.

the Saddle Ridge Haul story. some issues with the SF Chronical article (i'm hoping the couple gets to auction the coins).

>>>In addition, the coins were largely in chronological order<<<

this is false. they were found in 8 cans without regard to date. the dates of the coins span 47 years.

>>>New information, which adds credibility that the heist was an inside job at the Mint, became available late Monday afternoon from research by historian Jack Trout: An 1866 Liberty $20 gold piece — which did not include the words “In God We Trust” — was part of the haul, a coin that alone is worth more than $1 million.

“This was someone’s private coin, created by the mint manager or someone with access to the inner workings of the Old Granite Lady (San Francisco Mint),” Trout said. “It was likely created in revenge for the assassination of Lincoln the previous year (April 14, 1865). I don’t believe that coin ever left The Mint until the robbery. For it to show up as part of the treasure find links it directly to that inside job at the turn of the century at the San Francisco Mint.”<<<

this is also false. there were 3 variants on the liberty head double eagle and "in god we trust" was added after 1866. 1866 was the change point between type 1 and type 2 and the SF mint struck both variants (the no motto is the rarest) in 1866.

473 Regarding the gold coin story (of which I was the source: Now there is more information pouring in, some casting doubt on and some further confirming the mint theft theory. The "undermining" update is that historians say that if coins were stolen from the mint in the 1899-1901 timeframe, they very likely would have been all of very recent mintage: as a result of the Yukon Gold Rush, there was a lot of minting and thus a lot of turnover at the SF Mint during those years, and it would have been unlikely that older coins would be hanging around the storage room for years. And the uncirculateds in the found hoard dated back several years -- making seem unlikely that the found coin were from (or were all from) that particular heist. HOWEVER, other updates note that there wasn't just one heist -- there was an long ongoing series of them, some of which were discovered until years after the fact. And that the SF Mint was apparently thoroughly infected with unscrupulous employees who were taking advantage of lax oversight. If you combine that fact with the fact the at least 1/3 of the found coins were in fact uncirculated coins from the SF Mint, it seems almost certain that the coins MUST have come from one or more of the heists there, since nowhere else coin such a large volume of uncirculated gold coins be found at that time (numismatists in the late 1800s simply were not collecting contemporary "mint condition" coins, as they do now; that's a modern development). The jury is still out, and Lord know what's being investigated behind the scenes. As some commenters mentioned above (and as I mentioned in the comments section of my post), it all comes down to whether or not the Mint kept documentation of the heists -- or were they all destroyed in the 1906 Fire? Quite a historical mystery!

520 The problem with saying "Fuck the French" is that the "French" aren't really an ethnic group. Bretons are descended from Celts. Normans are descended from Vikings. Provençals are descended from Romans and Greeks. The original tribe from which the nation takes its name -- the Franks -- were actually Germans and spoke a Germanic language when they arrived. The Basques are descended from who-knows-who (probably aliens). Other invasions and migrations too left their ethnic marks. Only the Gauls are "native," but we have no idea what percentage of modern Frenchmen are actually descended from Gauls -- probably very few. There is no real such thing as "French."

Posted by: and irresolute The Bush Man's gag was not funny in the slightest, and was based on cruelty for the amusement of others. Once Tourist Family #1 were scared out of their wits by him only to discover they were laughingstocks to other tourists watching, they then would join the cynical audience to laugh at Tourist Family #2 blundering into the same trap. The first family thought they were rescuing their social reputation by joining in on the gag, but instead it was just like generational molestation were each person hurts the weakling under them as "revenge" for being hurt themselves. In other words, the Bush Man not only scared people for money, but he initiated a social system that corrupted his victim's morals. Unfortunately, he was only one of two different Bush Men -- the other one is still alive, and although old now, may return to continue the "tradition." And once he dies, surely some other creepy hobo will fill his shoes.

531 "The Basques are descended from who-knows-who (probably aliens)."

Are there enough French Basques to matter?

You do have to wonder about this scattering of tribes throughout Europe who are very oddly matched to their immediate neighbors and whose prior ethnography is a mystery. Hungarians must be alien descendants too.

"Only the Gauls are 'native,' but we have no idea what percentage of modern Frenchmen are actually descended from Gauls -- probably very few."

I read the recollections of an Anglophone lout who joined the French Foreign Legion on a bet. The Legion said they must all learn to speak French, and the instructors went straight to the classic French elementary school texts for that purpose.

("Our ancestors, the Gauls...")

Except in French elementary school, if you fail to conjugate a verb properly, the teacher doesn't beat the crap out of you and make you sleep outdoors in the rain without dinner.

532 [/another possibility is that it was someone hiding their gold during the depression. Posted by: rich@gmu[/i] Very unlikely. All the coins were from the 19th century. My own grandfather was one of those people that buried his gold coins in 1933. Skipping all the gory family details, when he died in the '60s and my aunt went and dug up the jar (without telling anybody at first), basically all the coins were from the early '30s with a few from the '20s. It'd be highly unusual for ALL the coins in your pocket in 1933 to be from the 19th century. Much more likely that they'd be of somewhat recent mintage. What they really need to do is ignore the coins and focus on the cans -- they probably are a huge clue to the date of burial.

Posted by: torquewrench at March 05, 2014 03:09 AM (gqT4g) Hungarians came from later invasions/incursions, and is related to Finnish and Estonian, as well as various languages spoken in the Ural mountains (thus they are known a Uralic languages).

I was just curious if it was okay, within the blog rules, to say ... uhhh... thanks for stepping up when it doesn't really matter in the slightest, when nothing is going to happen, when no blood is going to be spilled, when it is ever-so-easy to join in, thank you France. Posted by: zombie at March 05, 2014 03:05 AM (mizYg)

True.  Basque is a language isolate, meaning there is no discernible connection to any other spoken (or identifiable extinct) language.  The current theory is that it is pre Indo-European and was part of a family of languages spoken widely across western Europe until they were swamped by the Indo-European languages of the invaders.

559 You can tell a dog person (or an animal person) by the way they refer to them as they would any other person.

(I had this pointed out to me once not realizing what I was doing is not most people's way of referring to animals. Usually they use impersonal nouns and pronouns and don't use verbs that one would use for people. Interestingly I've found it a fairly good indicator of someone's closeness and empathy for animals. And believe me their are people who don't.)

561 The thing about Melanie is that she was first signed to Buddah Records, the bubblegum music record company. It had always bothered me that the name was misspelled "Buddah" for some odd reason, but I assumed the people who founded the label had some explanation or whatever. They sold tens of millions of records in the '60s. And much much later, I saw some little-seen interview with the founders that was recorded in the '80s or whenever, as part of some '60s retrospective. The following exchange happened during the interview, which just blew my mind and made me very angry/exasperated/amused: Interviewer: Now let me ask you about the name "Buddah." Founders of Buddah Records: OK Interviewer: Everyone wants to know -- why did you spell it that way? Founders of Buddah Records: What? Interviewer: Y'know -- why did you spell it BUDDAH? Was it an inside joke? Founders of Buddah Records: [Looking at each other quizzically.] What are you talking about? Interviewer: I mean -- "Buddha" is spelled BUDDHA. Why did you spell it -AH? Founders of Buddah Records: [Stunned silence.] Interviewer: It's one of the great mysteries of the '60s. Founders of Buddah Records: This is a joke, right? Interviewer: No, really, Buddha is spelled BUDDHA. Founders of Buddah Records: [Look of dumbfounded shock and mortification] Oh my god. For real? Interviewer: For real. Founders of Buddah Records: [Facepalm] We just assumed Buddha was spelled BUDDAH. No one ever bothered to check. Interviewer: And in all that time, no one -- not one single person -- ever pointed out to you that it was misspelled? Founders of Buddah Records: No. Not until now. I though to myself: How could these guys be SO STUPID and yet make SO MUCH MONEY??? It was infuriating.

There's plenty of people who work hard who never make it.

There's always, always a little bit of luck in timing or location or just plain serendipity that is part of anyone who has made it big.

584 I remember taking an entire roll of caps, standing them on edge, and striking the whole thing with the end of a wooden baseball bat.
Like hitting a pool ball with a stick, but grasped with both hands for enough force.

The whole roll would detonate at once in an ear ringing blast that would echo around the block.

At ten years old, in a state where firecrackers were illegal, it was the only way to go.

Then my neighbor, who was a chemistry Major taught me how to make gunpowder, and it all went downhill from there.

Posted by: Village Idiot's Apprentice at March 05, 2014 01:58 AM (DPkKe)

585 We used to use a hammer on those rolls of caps.  But when we wanted a big bang we shaved the heads off of matches and rolled them up in copper or aluminum pipe, hammered the ends flat into a rolled up sealed pipe, and threw them in a fire and ran.

That would draw the cops thanks to direct dial at neighbor's houses.

589 OK.  Here is a topic that is probably only appropriate in an ONT.

A typical ejaculation contains 5 to 7 calories.  By doing some complex math, that means that consuming 20 ejaculations would add 100 to 140 calories to your diet.  Given the sad history of humanity, there would be a lot of times when 100 calories would mean the difference between life and death.  Given the propensity that people have had for locking up their enemies and providing them with minimal, if any food, it would seem likely that some significant number have survived this sort of starvation captivity only by giving a lot of blow jobs.

I can understand why this sort of thing would be one of the details that people would be likely to leave out of their accounts of living in those circumstances, particularly in the 1940s and earlier but I am curious as to how much this has been a factor in survival.

591 On the commerce clause stuff:  This is why Mid-westerners need to be behind things like NAFTA, I-69, and expansion of any and all North-South trade corridors in the middle of the country and running as far as the Pacific coast of Mexico.  Strategic thinking.  The East and West coast states have a history of screwing over the inland states going back to before the Revolution, and this is not going to change.  When it gets bad enough, we need to be in a position to give them the finger and go our own way.

593 About fasting in the Roman Catholic Church- for those Protestants who may be unfamiliar with it: http://tinyurl.com/5gnwgc Of course, you don't have to be Catholic to fast. It is a long tradition from Judaism, and Buddhists, Hindus and Muslims also have fasts as part of their religious tradition. In Mark 9:29 (?) Jesus talks about exorcism of a demon that can only come out through prayer and fasting. Fasting (if we are physically able) helps us to realize as Christians that Christ is the true bread which feeds us. In addition prayers in keeping with God's will are sometimes more likely to be answered if we fast and pray.

595 I suspect that the government will have difficulty proving that the coins were the ones stolen; coins don't have serial numbers. Or have we come so far away from the Constitution that the burden of proof is no longer on the state?

While New York might demand payment of income tax - it is a bit difficult to see how they could enforce that on the individuals who don't reside there. Of course in the thug based blue state model of the world I guess they could be made offers they can't refuse.

New Jersey's actions are exactly why the commerce clause was put into the Constitution in the first place. Of course - under the Obama model of government, the Constitution no longer applies to anything - so have it goons.
