Overnight Open Thread (4-15-2014)

Quote of the Day

Dr Ray Stantz: You know, it just occurred to me that we really haven't had a successful test of this equipment.
Dr. Egon Spengler: I blame myself.
Dr. Peter Venkman: So do I.
Dr Ray Stantz: Well, no sense in worrying about it now.
Dr. Peter Venkman: Why worry? Each one of us is carrying an unlicensed nuclear accelerator on his back.

Democrat Ideology vs. Reality

Does anybody actually live and have breakfast like this?

Washingtonian MOM

I imagine this is exactly how the Известия Sunday Supplement would have covered up-and-coming members of the nomenklatura. Well assuming they could obtain fresh eggs, realistic-looking pineapples and fruit, matching pajamas, use of a show dacha, as well as afford the necessary color offset printing and photo retouching.

But amid the decadent breakfast Carney and Shipman demonstrate that from their artwork to their clothing that they still haven't forgotten their proletarian and revolutionary roots:

Jay Suit, $895, glen plaid dress shirt, $195, foulard print tie, $135, and polka-dot pocket square, $55, all at Hugo Boss (Tysons Galleria). Claire Cotton jacquard shift dress, $299 at Karen Millen (Tysons Galleria); knotted rope crystal necklace, $98 at Ann Taylor (multiple area locations); and jeweled bracelet by Loren Hope, similar styles at Bishop Boutique (Alexandria).

But if you read the article, amongst the fawning it actually ends up undercutting the Administration and Democrat's claims of widespread pay discrimination against women.

And yet Carney's own experience illustrates how silly the Democrats' claims are. Shipman has worked part-time for the last five years to spend more time with her young children. Carney, meanwhile, leaves for the White House at 7:25 a.m. and tries to get home by 8:00 in the evening. As in most families, it is his wife who takes time out from her career to focus on children, and who devotes more time to her family: "Flexibility, she says, is what most working mothers really want."

Exactly. That is the same choice that most families make-not all, but most. It largely explains why, on the average, men earn more than women. Carney no doubt understands this perfectly well, but this is one of many instances where he has to pretend that the Democrats' politically-inspired claims make sense, even though they are contrary to his own (and everyone else's) experience.

Because party truth trumps reality.

A Lot of Democrats Think Their Taxes Are Too Low

Yet they never opt to voluntarily pay more when given the chance. Because they want you to suffer as well. This is a classic area where Democrats are out of step with the rest of America.

RIP AC/DC (1973-2014)

Sadly founding member and rhythm guitarist Malcolm Young had a stroke and may never fully recover his guitar playing skills. So the band is calling it quits. For now. (thanks to Dave in Texas)

It totally is!  (thought I would lose my position due to excessive scrolling)  However, here is my annoying little question.  If we can be downloading data from satellites that are out past Jupiter, if you can walk into any random Starbucks and wirelessly grab the entire interwebs, why does a black box have to be in physical possession, why can't they make them so the data can just be pulled remotely?  This makes NO sense to me.

33 Doug Ross (Director Blue) links to this piece "The Real Meaning of Soviet Agitprop in Jay CarneyÂ’s Kitchen" by Oleg Atbashian, one of the founders of The Peoples Cube.

He began with this: "As soon as the photograph of Soviet propaganda posters in Jay CarneyÂ’s kitchen hit the Internet, right-wing pundits began to draw conclusions about White House Press SecretaryÂ’s ideology, morals, and political leanings. It was as if things that a man merely places on his walls and looks at day after day can be any indication of his life choices.

If that were so, the meals in CarneyÂ’s kitchen would also probably match the menu of the place and time of the posters. His family would be living on a diet of beets, gruel, occasional rat, and thinly sliced boiled jackboots, which is what many Soviets ate at the time these posters were produced."

155 However, here is my annoying little question. If we can be downloading data from satellites that are out past Jupiter, if you can walk into any random Starbucks and wirelessly grab the entire interwebs, why does a black box have to be in physical possession, why can't they make them so the data can just be pulled remotely? This makes NO sense to me.

Posted by: Peaches at April 15, 2014 09:41 PM (8lmkt)

My best guess:  if the black box can emit a 37.5 kHz audio ping, it could be designed to receive pings on a different channel, pings that would give it orders to download its memory in a long string of short and long pings, like Morse Code, only representing zeroes and ones, for binary data. Probably the box would need to be provided with a larger battery for this to work. Likely the biggest stumbling block would be getting to the necessary approval from all the regulatory agencies with fingers in the pie.

I chatted with a Porsche shop owner, a guy who actually _learned German_ via the Goethe-Institut, so that he could do a better job working on German cars. I think, maybe, vascular surgeons charge more per hour.

Of course, the care and feeding of Porsche-owner clients is complicated and fussy. One shop client came in with his Porsche, and a van with his own personal tools, to be used by the shop staff. Because only one set of tools was to ever be allowed to touch his car. No hoi-polloi common tools used on just any car would do. (This ended when some dirtbag stole the van.)

He said that he made the 930 Turbo owners pay in cash up front because of their habit of getting themselves killed in the car. I am still not sure to this day that he was joking.

262 "No doubt, the difficulties in getting to the MH370 at the bottom of the Indian Ocean, as demonstrated in that graphic, are immense."

For years, I argued with lefty enviroweenies about nuclear power.

They kept bleating, "What do you do with the waste?"

I said, "Well, first off, that stuff isn't really waste per se. There's usable energy left in there. Plenty of it. But current generation reactors aren't set up for that. We could build advanced reactors and hugely reduce said 'waste' issue. Fission that stuff."

They said, "To zero? No? Where do you put the irreducible minimum?"

I said, "Well, shit, just about any decommissioned hard-rock mountain mine would do nicely. But if you want to make sure it's never seen again before finally decaying to lead, cast it in glass bricks and use ROVs to stack it on the bottom of the bottom of the bottom of the ocean."

Because there are places that go a lot deeper even than that very deep graphic.

Way down there, there aren't much in the way of currents to move things around. There are a bunch of dead nuclear sub reactor cores in much shallower water which show that the materials don't migrate far.

And there's not much life apart from the odd extremophile colonies around volcanic vents. Life requires a certain minimal amount of metabolizable energy, and it's very dark and very cold down there. Really the only thing going other than the vents is the very faint spark of digestible organic material slowly raining down from dead sea life in shallower waters.

"Fender liner", usually. A seldom seen place where car manufacturers will save every fraction of a penny that they can, with things like cheapo pop fasteners instead of proper screws.

If there are screws, they may be corroded into immobility. PB Blaster or Kroil. And patience.

Oh, I don't know.  I kind of like the idea that it's still possible for people to move around the planet without being minutely surveilled.

And constant surveillance is not free.   The engines on that plane could have sent data back to the manufacturer, but the operator didn't think it added enough value to make the cost worthwhile.

Sorry but nature and the laws of physics get a vote on this. And they always choose to make things challenging if even possible at all.

Everything is a trade-off. So you probably could have continual flight data upload and 180-day pinger batteries - just so long as you don't mind paying an extra $150+ per flight.

285 So the nazi Bloomberg is launching a $50M political group to destroy the NRA. Here's the NYT puff piece. Check out the last paragraph. RT @DouthatNYT: Now *that* is a kicker: http://nyti.ms/1hJvbuw Michael R. Bloomberg, making his first major political investment since leaving office, plans to spend $50 million this year building a nationwide grass-roots network to motivate voters who feel strongly about curbing gun violence, an organization he hopes can eventually outmuscle the National Rifle Association. Mr. Bloomberg, the former mayor of New York, said gun control advocates need to learn from the N.R.A. and punish those politicians who fail to support their agenda — even Democrats whose positions otherwise align with his own. “They say, ‘We don’t care. We’re going to go after you,’ ” he said of the N.R.A. “ ‘If you don’t vote with us we’re going to go after your kids and your grandkids and your great-grandkids. And we’re never going to stop.’ ” He added: “We’ve got to make them afraid of us.” ... He was also dismissive of skeptics who might question whether he could ever build an organization that rivaled the N.R.A. And he seemed unaware of, or unwilling to acknowledge, the ways in which his own persona — of a billionaire, Big Gulp-banning former mayor of New York — could undercut his efforts, especially in rural, conservative states. “I don’t know what your perception is of our reputation, and mine, the name Bloomberg around the country,” he said. But every place he goes, he added, “You’re a rock star. People yelling out of cabs, ‘Hey, way to go!’ ” His financial commitment to reducing gun violence could grow. When asked how much he was willing to spend, he tossed out the $50 million figure out as if he were describing the tip he left on a restaurant check. “I put $50 million this year, last year into coal, $53 million into oceans,” he said with a shrug, describing his clean energy and sustainable fishing initiatives. “Certainly a number like that, $50 million. Let’s see what happens.” The key to whether they can be effective, the mayor and his advisers said, will be turning out female voters, the sought-after swing bloc that has been pivotal in recent elections. “Right now, women, when they go to the polls, they vote on abortion, they vote on jobs, they vote on health care,” said Shannon Watts, founder of Moms Demand Action. “We want one of those things to be gun violence prevention.” Mr. Bloomberg was introspective as he spoke, and seemed both restless and wistful. When he sat down for the interview, it was a few days before his 50th college reunion. His mortality has started dawning on him, at 72. And he admitted he was a bit taken aback by how many of his former classmates had been appearing in the “in memoriam” pages of his school newsletter. But if he senses that he may not have as much time left as he would like, he has little doubt about what would await him at a Judgment Day. Pointing to his work on gun safety, obesity and smoking cessation, he said with a grin: “I am telling you if there is a God, when I get to heaven I’m not stopping to be interviewed. I am heading straight in. I have earned my place in heaven. It’s not even close.”

And then people will complain about that. Doesn't mean we shouldn't look for ways to improve, we should always be doing that, but current, real world limitations exist and need to be recognized.

That thing sat around the SF Bay for decades. While, as rumor has it, the contaminated internal "moon pool" cooled off. I always used to laugh about how the local liberal loons would totally shit themselves in fear if only they bothered to crack a book and learn what the hell that ship had done.

For a while it was parked near the salt flats in the south Bay. Then they moved it north to Suisun Bay and the "mothball fleet" up there.

It's apparently now been renovated and overhauled and is back in service with the offshore oil industry. I wonder how many of the roughnecks have any idea about its storied history.

293 Plus the blackbox records A LOT of plane data. I doubt there's enough satellite data uplink bandwidth to handle all that data reliably.  ---------- Maybe a modification of a Link16 kind of system, which is TDMA, with planes having several network participant profiles loaded for various nets designated for high risk regions. E.G. planes flying across pacific would be on net 1 and use their assigned profile for that net, then they would switch to another profile for network 2 for flying across indian ocean, etc. Only planes flying in high risk areas would transmit while in transit then shut off once landed and nottransmit when flying over accessible regions.

304 Peaches, the airliners had Twitter function starting in the 1980s.  Transmitted via VHF in coded or uncoded 140 character blocks to and from the pilots.

NDH, when the plane gets in trouble scenario.  Pam Am Flt 103 and TWA 800 would not have been helped by it because both were sudden and complete destruction of airframes.

So the only way to make sure such a system would help pinpoint the cause is a real time transmit of all data as it happens.  Which requires bandwidth, lots of it since a modern digital FDR can record around 300 different flight parameters.

340 The NYPD has abandoned its controversial and secretive surveillance program that sent plainclothes police officers into Muslim neighborhoods for the purposes of gathering information on possible terrorist plots, officials said. Marking a dramatic change of course for the department, Police Commissioner Bill Bratton agreed to disband the largely inactive Demographics Unit, which was started in 2003 in response to the 9/11 terror attacks. The unit was intended to root out threats by identifying pockets of Islamic radicalization and locations where potential terrorists might gather. The covert program sent plainclothes officers into restaurants, mosques and just about anywhere else Muslims gathered, to eavesdrop on peopleÂ’s conversations and gauge peopleÂ’s feeling toward the United States. The unit worked in secret until 2011, when the Associated Press published an expose chronicling the NYPDÂ’s exploits in Muslim neighborhoods, causing a rift between the department and minority communities. in the NYPost I hope people will thank the AP when the next terrorist attack occurs in NYC

Story I heard about a year ago concerning a Bolivian riverine boat accidentally wandering into Chilean territory and encountering a Chilean patrol.  At first, the two sides were about to start blasting away at each other, until the respective commanders recognized one another...they had been classmates at Western Hemisphere Institute for Security Cooperation (WHINSEC)...what used to be known as "School of the Americas" at Fort Benning.  What was nearly a bloodbath became a little reunion and the Chileans helpfully guided the lost Bolivians back to their own turf.

Fender liners are often held in by "Christmas tree" fasteners, like a rivet with a stack of plastic barbs on it. Mostly you break them taking them out. But you can buy new ones cheap at your local auto parts store.

There are also plastic expansion rivets that are expanded into place by either a pin, pressed in, or a small Phillips-head screw. If you see screw heads, that might be what you have. If the rivet doesn't fit tightly, the whole thing may turn. A hammer and sharp chisel fixes them. Again, cheap, cheap. Plastic fasteners are actually better in this application, because they don't corrode. You want to pay some dealership mechanic $75 per hour to drill out rusted screws, when he can have the fender liner out and in again in five minutes by cutting the old plastic fasteners and popping in new ones for a quarter each?

Honda uses plastic push fasteners that look exactly like phillips head screws.

Just get under the fender liner and pop it a little.  Then you can take a pair of diagonal pliers and finish the removal by either cutting or levering it the rest of the way.

I'd lever it, they frequently can be reused with no problem.

The plane I randomly picked? Just flew directly over the top of my house. That was a bit odd.

Actually, the reason the transponder is accessible inside the cockpit is because of hijackings.  There is an international code that the pilots can change the "squawk" of the transponder to to indicate a hijacking.  That way, even if they are unable to vocally transmit the situation to air traffic control, ATC will see the transponder code and know what's going on.

Holy cow. Walking in the footprints of history, and all that.

I understand that after the fall of the USSR, the CIA and the Navy sent a delegation to what had just become once again the admiralty of the Russian fleet. With videotape of what had been done with the mortal remains of the sailors from the sub.

They had been given a very formal, disciplined and respectful Russian Orthodox burial at sea. With the whole ship's company turned out in their best.

This apparently made a tremendous impression about good American intentions even upon the more hardened and doctrinaire Communist types. At what was a fairly tense time from their perspective.

We had a sawed-off, fire-breathing Electronics Tech on the ship I served on.  Maddest I ever saw him was the night we recovered the helo and the pilot filed a maintenance form indicating a serious equipment malfunction that required he be awakened immediately to repair.

Must have been an interesting job bringing everything up to date.

Also in re interesting jobs: I talked for a while with a guy whose profession is squiring people through the long rigamarole of getting security clearances.

(Which has become a HUGE industry now in the post-Sept-11 environment. There are entire job-search Web sites devoted only to jobs requiring clearances.)

He got into that line of work back in the day, before things got really crazy.

One of the things he mused about (not having handled it himself) was that assembling a crew, with top clearances, for the original _Glomar Explorer_ mission, must have been a cast iron bitch.

The offshore sector from which they were seeking experienced hands has more than its share of VERY colorful characters. Colorful in the sorts of ways that would make a straightlaced clearance examiner blush and mark them as wholly unsuitable. I heard the story of one rig roughneck who had eleven ex-wives.

I can only assume they must have issued a bunch of waivers. Or they looked for a long long time to find the people they needed.

463 More censusÂ….. Today, the controlling law for the U.S. Census is Title 13 of the U.S. Code That law requires that the census be conducted on or about April 1, 1980, and every ten years after that. The returns must be made available within nine months in order to apportion members of the House of Representatives to each of the states. In the intervening years the law requires the Census Bureau to gather statistics about the residents of the United States for use by Congress. The decennial census is provided for at 13 USC 141. The law states that the count done in 1980 and every ten years thereafter shall be an actual headcount. The count done in the intervening years need not be an actual headcount, but may use statistical sampling methods to get a reasonable approximations of a head count. There are fines for non-response and for false response as well, though the amount has risen from the 1790's $20. Today failure to respond can result in a $100 fine; providing false answers is a more severe offense, and carries a $500 fine. Recent news reports, however, indicate that punishment for failure to respond is not usually enforced. The controlling section of the Code is 13 USC 221.

490 "[An] Enumeration shall be made within three Years after the first Meeting of the Congress of the United States, and within every subsequent Term of ten Years, in such Manner as they shall by Law direct."

There's what ought to be a fairly obvious question there about just what is meant by an "enumeration", and just how broadly the Congressional prerogative to direct that "by law" can be drawn.

I tend to view any such enumeration as a pretty strictly defined headcount of citizens, intended to determine federal representation, and not more than that.

Of course, in the age of "emanations and penumbras", and the infinitely elastic Commerce Clause, and the fabled "Good and Welfare" clause which Rep. Conyers likes to cite, sheesh, we should be glad it's just nosey questions.

494 I think you might be surprised. Even the very first census involved a lot of argument about what would and should be asked. For example, on February 2, 1790, Samuel Livermore of New Hampshire lamented that the proposed question about profession would be hard for his constituents to answer, since some had three or four professions, depending on the season. Connecticut Representative Theodore Sedgwick, on the same day, wondered why the questions were not extended further — "The state of society could be ascertained, perhaps, in some degree, by observing [the] proportions." http://www.usconstitution.net/consttop_cens.html

495 I got the long form in 2000. Threw it in the garbage. Got it again a couple of weeks later. Threw it in the garbage. Rinse repeat 3 or 4 more times. I lived in a blue state at the time. Then I moved and never heard from the census again. In 2010, I didn't get anything long form or short form. I lived in a red state at the time. So blue state, they hound the fuck out of me. Red state, they don't so much as even acknowledge my existence. But the civil service is totes non-partisan and shit.

A little aviation sanity, I'll hope?

In most modern airliner cockpits, the layouts will be more similar than not.

The transponder "head unit" will be centrally located, either on the lower-center panel in front of the pilots, or in the center console, near the autopilot controls.

In that location, the crew can dial in various transponder codes, including those for hijack or other forms of distress.  At this "head unit" location, the transponder does not feature a boldly marked "off" switch.

However, in that each and every electrical system on the aircraft must be able to be shut off and isolated in the case of electrical fault or fire, every said system has an electrical circuit breaker, and that panel is most often on the forward facing bulkhead, directly behind the pilot's seat.

Most often, it will be the 1st Officer's job (co-pilot), to "pull" a given breaker, as needs arise.

If there were any fire of an undeterminate nature aboard the aircraft, the breakers would be all be pulled, save for those absolutely necessary for the continued operation of the plane.  This would include the breaker which powers the transponder.

In any airborne emergency, the priorities are to 1.  Aviate.  2.  Navigate.  3.  Communicate.

And if a smoky fire occurred on board, the pilots would have their hands full with #s 1 and #2.  Might not have had time for #3, before their smoke-hoods ran out of time.

Oxygen masks, you ask?  They don't wear those in case of cockpit fires.  Unless they want their face burned off at more than 2,000 degrees F.

Frankly, I think the end of 370 would have been horrible beyond reckoning.....  if anyone had remained conscious through the last few hours of the flight.

I tend to think that it was lights out after the first ten to fifteen minutes, and it was all autopilot till fuel exhaustion thereafter.

And yes, the Glomar Explorer used to be a noticeable artifact in both Long Beach and San Diego.  Growing up in a nuke-sub family.....  we tended to appreciate such things long before even Hearst News knew they existed.

Those memories fill me with warmth, and with pride.

Its pretty clear the Founders wanted a count of everyone, every 10 years, so they could apportion the House seats... and that Congress could then pass law so that could be done. The intent was to get a count every 10 years... not to create an invasion of the Peoples Privacy... or force them to speak when they did not wish to. Yet the result of the Over Lawyerization of the Law... the overcomplication of a simple idea... is then used by the Fed Gov to give itself power, the Founders didn't really intent... But then again.... Rights are soon going to be Collective vice personal anyway (once Obama gets one more idiot on the Supremes...).

You can always pick out little bits of the Constitution to give the feds more power than they should have...

Posted by: Romeo13 at April 16, 2014 12:27 AM (84gbM) Hide posts from (84gbM)

Just keep sayin' you're takin' the Fifth. 562 Thank you, my friends. Although I think Eric "the Red" Holder is a sock. Truthfully I would have signed a DNR last year. I have Health Care Proxy for almost two years, I need to sign in front of witnesses. I'm going to get it & bring to work with me tomorrow. I just put in a bag to bring to work. When my mother was hospitalized in April 2006 the on call doctor called to ask me what to do if such a situation arose. I asked him to tell me truth. He told me with Alzheimer's, diabetes & age 79 it would be worse & I would probably end up with woman that didn't know anything. I told him I would sung DNR, & over years at nursing home I'd be asked to decide if I wanted my mother to have feeding tube & answer was NO, others followed & answers were always No! My mother saw Terry Schiavo disaster & she was experiencing acceleration of Alzheimer's at the time. She asked me to put her to sleep if she became like that, I told her to take some green pills from my purse. She was Old school Catholic & wouldn't take them. I'm sorry, I'm felling very sad tonight.

580 "very sad tonight."

You are in the thoughts and prayers of many, Carol.

Per your brother's situation, I also have had a family member put in a DNR. I said, "What, don't you trust me to look after your stated wishes?"

The response was that of course they trusted me, but they wanted to spare me what they knew might be years of painful second-guessing afterward.

Insofar as there might have to be a subjective judgement-call decision made, they wanted it to be relegated to medical professionals. Ones who regularly make such calls and are distant enough from the individuals in question not to be haunted about the thought of erring.

Your brother may have been thinking along the same lines. Trying to take some of his heavy burden off of your shoulders.

581 There was a photographer in the late 70s-early 80s, IIRC, that made his living taking advertising photos that were modeled on the style of Norman Rockwell pictures. Intricately detailed with exaggerated poses, letting you know that whatever new-fangled stuff they were advertising was really homey and comforting like an old Saturday Evening Post cover. That photo on top reminds me of his work, if it was filtered through a IKEA lens.

Could in fact be a pulled muscle.

Or as the eldritch horror suggests, appendicitis. Be ready to move fast in case it might be.

Or hernia. For which you also in certain rare cases should be ready to move fast (i.e., incarcerated or "strangulated" hernia).

Or perhaps just indigestion. I've had occasional strongly persistent dull aches that I could have sworn were something really seriously wrong, that were ultimately just gas pains and gone by the next day.

In that classic Detroit muscle-car way. Just as with its Sixties forebears: really fast in a straight line, don't ask it to handle or stop particularly well.

626 "torque: which 1960s/1970s car was the most ahead of its time in your opinion? Although that may be like asking which Victrola had the best stereo sound..."

Depending on which day of the week you ask that question, you might get a very different answer.

Because, for one: ahead of its time in which regard?

Pure engineering and mechanical innovation without regard to market success? Or huge market success based on witty repurposing of merely modest engineering? Because ultimately the car business is driven by economics, and the latter matters.

By way of example, I think I'm with the Hickster in admiring the pioneering big GM front-drives. But they don't really have much by way of traceable design-DNA descendants. Whereas the smaller four-cylinder front-drives of the same era have distant progeny who are everywhere today.

630 And holy crap, Hickster just mentioned the Riviera. But they weren't FWD. The Tornado was, as were later Eldorado. the late, great, Bill Mitchell designed them all. A true genius, and probably the greatest treasure ever at GM.

631 Well, it's official. My mother can no longer manage her own affairs any more. I've been begging her to get her tax info together for me since mid-March. She has this pathological procrastination issue that makes her just lock up instead of addressing something that must be done. So, once again, it's being done on the last possible day. Except she cannot find her 1099R and I don't know enough to be sure of all the details. I know the amount of money and TurboTax brought forward all of the stuff from the previous year but I'm reluctant to guess at the remaining blank spots.

Fortunately, TurboTax automates requesting an extension and you get it automatically without asking in the state of CA. From now on, knowing she is incapable of creating any rational system for filing her documents, whenever she gets anything that might figure into next year's return, I'm scanning it so I have copies of my own.

I was really hoping to feel like a functional adult myself before it came to this.

633 And I guess also there's the question:

Is a 1930s design that didn't hit it really big until the 1960s, the Beetle, something to be reckoned with under the category of significant Sixties cars? Or must a design have been new in the era?

Note that VW _just now_ quit building the classic Kombi van. It had been in production in Brazil right up until this year.

I know you weren't addressing me, q, but I have a '66 Buick Riviera in the garage. It can claim the distinction of being the car that eliminated the "vent window" - and it has a badass, futuristic "drum" speedometer. As Rosie O would say, Google It!
Does anyone under forty even remember the vent windows on cars?

++++

Buick might have removed the vent window from the Riviera in 66, but they were still showing up in other models for decades after that.

Sounds like something made for the Lifetime channel, not a theatrical release.

718 I'm watching the original Planet of the Apes movie in between posts here.

Yeah, the ape costuming sucks a bit, but it is interesting none-the-less.

I'm still hoping for some gratuitous boobehs but the movie is young.

Phoenix/Jean Grey was on her first death when they did the original. They offed her in 137 and the classic 'This issue: Everybody dies!' cover was for 142: http://www.comics.org/issue/35133/

725 Epobirs at April 16, 2014 04:57 AM (bPxS6) argh! you're right ... Rachel Summers not Jean Grey ...

Posted by: Adriane... at April 16, 2014 12:59 AM (qoKTg)

726 Now, if there were a young ginger who looked a bit like Famke Jannsen, perhaps there would be a Rachel... IMDB doesn't show the character listed but there is a Booboo Stewart playing Warpath aka Thunderbird. Technically, Thunderbird II but it appears his older brother didn't exist in the movie-verse. Heck, he barely existed in the comics, dying in his second issue.

Posted by: Epobirs at April 16, 2014 01:05 AM (bPxS6)

727 I doubt Warpath is a major character but the existence of a person who intentionally is known professionally as Booboo is notable.

730 Epobirs, I'm so sorry that your mother can't manage her own affairs. I had that happen to mine & it meant the beginning of Alzheimer's. I hope & pray your mother has some other reason for it. My Mother started in 2002 & my older brother took her to her doctor either late that year or early 2003. That dickhead said my mother was suffering from mental stress, I had breast cancer in 2002 & Paul almost died from kidney failure . One of the many times he almost died from drinking & survived. He wasn't eating & ate Tums to keep Vodka down. According to him it was not drinking, it was that he lacked enzyme for kidneys to break down calcium. Take your mother to a doctor that specializes in it, there were meds in 2005 that helped her. I'm sure that there are some newer ones now. I had her taking vitamins from some place I had found on internet,I called & owner told me to get a prescription for drug new to US. I just woke up & can't remember the name. I'm sure that there are newer more effective drugs now. The medication made her act like my Mother in a week & helped with her memory..

733 There is snow on cars & garden areas! I remember we had snow, but not how much in May 1977. I didn't hear any talk then of global warming etc 37 years ago.

734 "I didn't hear any talk then of global warming etc 37 years ago."

Back in 77 globull cooling was still in vogue. Probably used as proof by the talking heads.

I'll say a prayer for your brother Carol. Not much else I can do. I am so sorry.

737 Bomber Billy, There is not much anyone can do, I believe Paul is in God's hands & am surprised he's still alive after last March when someone called 911, from what one ER nurse who was there when he was first at the hospital. One doctor in early April last year answered that he had odds of making it at 50/50. He's 52 & now a quadriplegic from four strep infections at the same time. The only thing he looks forward to is food & watching television. He's talked to hospital ombudsman about trying to get him out of Maine & back to Massachusetts where his family & friends are. I called & begged admissions director at nursing home near me on Monday. To me, Maine free healthcare is Medicaid & is also same as free Mass Health. They have no openings for male beds but nice woman who return my call yesterday said he has to get Medicare too. WTF it has taken this long for him to get SSDI is a wonder. He cannot do anything himself.

738 I really am thankful for the warmening. Just think how cold it would be without it.

741 "WTF it has taken this long for him to get SSDI is a wonder. He cannot do anything himself."

One thing you can check. I am not saying this is the case but check anyway. One of the most common mistakes that happen in SSDI claims is the application process.

If you have a copy of his original application check and see what type it is. To my knowledge there are three types. One for SSDI and SSI together and one for each type alone.

If by chance his original application was for SSI only it will take a longer for the process to finish for a disability claim because some desk jokey has to make the call to switch it over to a disability claim.

Posted by: GMB (et al) at April 16, 2014 02:35 AM (nkPV9)

742 GMB. iPads have a tendency to put in words you aren't even thinking of. Paul has a lawyer helping him apply for SSDI. I have asked him to call him & have him talk to me. He hasn't yet. Ombudsman at hospital or nursing home is trying to get him closer tomMassachusetts, he's in Augusta now. When he was in ER Monday i called to make sure they didn't leave him out in the hall. They did that one night last September & he was pissed off. He can't fix himself if he's slipped into a bad position. No one there knew why he was a quadriplegic, everything that happened to him took place at that hospital. I told nurse I think it's odd no one would look at hospital record. I'm sure it's a thousand plus pages, but they should know why he's like this now Is that expecting too much? Thank you. I wrote a note & put in my purse.

Posted by: Carol at April 16, 2014 02:55 AM (gjOCp)

743 Just trying to cover all the bases. I didn't know that he had a lawyer working on the case.

Can't tell how many times some one in the Horde had thought of an angle on an issue that didn't occur to me.

And sometimes it just helps to talk about it.

Posted by: GMB (et al) at April 16, 2014 02:58 AM (nkPV9)

744 GMB, Thanks for listening. I have hard time talking about things but find it easier with Horde. Lawyer can't be that great or he'd have it approved by now.

745 If flexibility is what working women want (and I think those who are mothers do want that), then Republicans should consider ways to make it easier for women to work part-time, work from home, etc. It doesn't have to be legislation, just support for a different kind of woman's right to choose.
