— Open Blogger In case you missed it and, if you are like me and rarely watch Bill O'Reilly, you probably did. I caught this while driving and couldn't wait to see the video.
Dennis Miller and Bill O'Reilly are discussing Tesla Motors with BOR arguing that government funding of the company is in reality a national security expense, Dennis is having none of it. Then, at around the 3:45 mark Miller sets him up so beautifully that I just roared with laughter.
The "No Spin Zone" my ass.
Skip to the 1:56 mark for the relevant discussion.

It's not just the source of the electricity these types overlook. Where does the Lead, Nickel, Lithium, Cadmium and sulfuric acid come from? To change the entire US to electric cars the mining of heavy metals that the greenies block anyway they can will have to increase exponentially. Just as electricity isn't magic like they believe nether is it's storage.

Just opened the HQ in Pale Moon. Report:
Firefox migration tool failed to work so I went to
C:\Users\Lurker Report\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox
Copied everything in there and pasted it to:
C:\Users\Lurker Report\AppData\Roaming\Mooonchild Productions\Pale Moon
I have a heavily modified user interface and tons of add-ons, including RoboForm browser plug-in.
Perfect.
I can't even tell I'm in a different browser. Roboform works. Took 5 minutes.
Cool.

Speaking of solar and wind, what do you do at night with a solar powered grid?
Does everyone go to bed at dusk?
How do you deal with demand on a still, hot August night with wind power when everyone wants a fan or AC?

I'm afraid to say what I think of BOR. Suffice it to say he's as dumb as any media figure (now that is a damning standard), and his appeal is a complete mystery.
I assume the "national security" idiocy is the usual completely baseless "analysis" that is, unfortunately, very widespread (I've even heard otherwise intelligent GOP office-holders allude to it): that reducing imported oil dependence will have any concrete effect on our foreign policy or national security.
Uh, no it won't. Energy ABUNDANCE is the (obvious) desirable situation, which could be easily achieved (without any meaningful environmental cost) by simply letting markets and technology work their very unmagical magic. But such a happy thing would have, probably, zero impact on our national security.
Unless you assume a radically different overall foreign policy, and a willingness to live with the risks and costs of a world pretty much free of US influence, then self-sufficiency in petroleum/energy (or more reasonably, North American self-sufficiency - Canada and Mexico) has no particular value beyond the implied economic (unrelated) one. We gain from a global economy, and have an interest in secure sea lanes and world order that goes far beyond just oil (and always has).
We may be headed towards part of this picture in any case. It's a fundamentally unserious country, on all important matters, including foreign policy, so we may end up rolling the dice and seeing how things work out. But reducing oil imports, absent huge unrelated changes in our overall national security strategy and risk tolerance, would/will have no impact in of it itself.
And no, it's not smart to just go with the flow and bank the support for rational oil development/use that comes from this simplistic and incorrect idea of reduced imports = national security advantage. What would be smart would be educating the public and changing the public framework to an economically literate one in which energy development is understood as a key element of a truly vibrant economy. If we/someone cannot frame important issues in serious terms, but always rely on dumbed-down (or even incorrect, as in this case) slogans and mass misunderstandings, then any progress will be fitful and random. We're in the various messes we're in primarily, specifically BECAUSE all public policy issues are discussed in ridiculously dumbed down or misleading terms.

When searching for a new car, conserving energy is patriotic, so I hear, so I could go with a Cobalt with the deadly ignition switch for $12k, or a $100k Tesla... with gas a $4/gallon I could burn ($100k - $12k = $88k, $4/gal) 22,000 gallons of gas RIGHT NOW - 'MERICA!
Knowing I will break even, maybe, when the Tesla gets, oh, 660,000 miles on it (assuming 30 mpg on the Cobalt and free juice on the Tesla) - clearly the smart thing to do.
The problem with most, if not all, libs/greens like O'Reilly is that that actually are fucking stupid, or simply evil.
p.s. - all calcs rough PV - it is simple and you don't have to justify assumptions.
