The Return of the Vast Rightwing Conspiracy: Administration's/Democrats' Coordinated Response to Benghazi Email Is to Call All Inquiries and Doubts "Conspiracy Theories" and "Delusional"
— Ace

It's worth remembering that in 1994 a Chris Lehane-drafted memo conjured up the menace of the "vast rightwing conspiracy" by essentially claiming that any and all derogatory reports on Bill and Hillary Clinton were "conspiracy theories."

There were indeed some claims made by conservatives on the internet that could be termed "conspiracy theories," such as the alleged cover-up of the Vince Foster suicide.

But the Lehane memo also categorized Gennifer Flowers' and Paula Jones' allegations as "conspiracy theories." And of course they were true.

The scandal-plagued Democrats now enact the same playbook, claiming that every true-but-damaging thing said against them constitutes a "conspiracy theory" that no reasonable person could possibly entertain.

Jay Carney:

“There is a problem when you have so many conspiracy theories that get knocked down by the facts and yet, the adherents to those theories only become more convinced that the facts aren’t what they so clearly are,” Carney said, calling the special committee “so partisan in nature.”

Carney went on to criticize the “information loop” on Benghazi saying that Republicans and “certain media outlets” were fueling a false narrative on the attack that killed four Americans.

David Plouffe calls any questions about Benghazi "delusional."

"There's a very loud, delusional minority that's driving our politics that's in control of the Republican Party. There's no conspiracy here at all."

Former Congresswoman (D) Jane Harman likewise claims that Republicans are engaging in "conspiracy theories" about Benghazi.

HARMAN: [L]et me make a couple comments on Benghazi. I know something about this. And the day after the Susan Rice appearances, I -- or the day after the event, I was meeting with some senior intelligence committee folks, because I still advise in some capacities on boards to some of our agencies. And I think there was legitimate confusion.

I agree about the point that the video was in Egypt and nobody really knew what the facts were. I'm reading from the Ben Rhodes memo which I've never seen before and it said, "We're not aware of any actionable intelligence indicating that an attack on the U.S. mission in Benghazi was planned or imminent."

And I think that was accurate. So --

WALLACE: Because we didn't have actionable intelligence about 9/11. That doesn't mean it didn't happen.

HARMAN: No, it doesn't mean it didn't happen.

WALLACE: It doesn't mean it wasn't a terror attack.

HARMAN: I would call that an intelligence failure. And, by the way, this was an intelligence failure. But it wasn't a conspiracy. And there aren't aliens in Area 51 and Vince Foster wasn't murdered.

And it's time to move on and focus on the real problems in Libya and other problems that affect the --

Sounds like the White House has crafted some new Talking Points about their discredited Benghazi Talking Points.

In the Obama Wonderland of endless dissembling, even the Talking Points have their own Talking Points.

Incidentally, Britt Hume let Jane Harman have it on her rote Talking Points Talking Points.

“You’re right, there wasn’t a conspiracy in the United States to mount the Benghazi attack,” Hume said. ”That’s not the question. The question was whether in the aftermath of the attack, when the administration sent its U.N. ambassador out to explain it to everybody, and she did so falsely, that there wasn’t a conspiracy to create the false talking points that she used. I’m not talking about the CIA talking points, I’m talking about the talking points used on that program that day, which were monumentally misleading, that since have been shown to be false, and based on no intelligence of any consequence that we know of.”

Hume pressed Harman to name a single person in the administration who credibly believed that the Benghazi attack was connected to an anti-Islam video. Predictably, she could not do so.

“Ben Rhodes talks about the video five times in this memo, five times,” host Chris Wallace interjected.

Sharyl Atkkisson notes that this is precisely what she means when she talks about the Administration's unending campaign to "controversialize" legitimate, factual reporting they don't like.

SHARYL ATTKISSON: Well, the key words they use such as conspiracy and delusional are in my opinion, clearly designed to try to controversialize a story, a legitimate news story, a legitimate area of journalistic inquiry. To some degree, thatÂ’s successful, but I think primarily among those that donÂ’t want to look at this as a story in the first place. But I see that as a well-orchestrated strategy to controversialize a story they really donÂ’t want to hear about.

The media, she means, by that bit.

The best lie is the one you never have to offer, because you've intimidated people from asking about it at all.

18 Oh if you watch that Hume clip, which makes me tingly in my tingly parts, there's pretty much an attempt by that bint to turn questions about the changes to the memo to 9-11 trutherism. At one point she hauls out the there was no actionable intelligence on an attack line and Wallace slams back with there wasn't for 9-11 either and it happened and she has to do a huge huge back pedal that yes yes yes the attack happened. The look on Hume's face at the initial cutaway is priceless, just priceless. Also, this sure as hell looks like an actual conspiracy to me. I mean, all evidence suggests that a group of people got together and determined to blame the attacks on a video with no supporting evidence at all in order to avoid the political consequences. Then there's that no one will answer where Obama was during the attacks other than a generic in the White House. I still want to punch Lehane in his crapweasel face for that article where he does the hell yeah I would have written it again and then does the whole oh I didn't mean there were actual conspiracies wink wink nudge nudge.

46 the intent of the boycott and all this "conspiracy/delusional" talk is to give the Old Media the excuse not to cover the Select Committee hearings. If they can keep the coverage down to a minimum, then Obama can continue to obfuscate and delay and drag things out interminably. They don't want public interest to rebuild on Benghazi because the pressure for answers will grow, too. So keeping coverage "discreet" is their only remaining weapon.

Harmon's comments sounded reasonable at first, but as I thought about them, they are ridiculous.

She claims that on that Sunday, the White House and others were still confused about what happened.  But even if that were true (and it is not), that doesn't explain why Rice went out and said pretty definitively it was the video.

Under Harmon's theory, Rice should have said "We're confused... it could have been a pre-planned terrorist attack, a response to the video, or something else."

That's not what happened.

64 If you follow the trail of Talking Points edits, you can see that the White House was desperate to sell the story that the ROOT CAUSE of the Benghazi attacks was the Bigot Video protests.

That message got passed through so many political hands and propaganda ministers that, by the time the final Talking Points hit the airwaves through Rice's mouth, they had her saying that the Benghazi attacks were IMMEDIATELY PRECEDED by a Bigot Video protest.

It's kind of the way gossip works -- someone says that A is annoyed by B and wants to say something rude about it, and by the time the story gets to Z, the story is that A killed B's mother and raped her corpse.

The Obama White House kept pushing the connection between the attack and the Bigot Video, and over the course of repeated political edits, by people with no new real information, it got to the point that the Bigot Video directly incited the Benghazi attack.

But, of course, there was no protest in Benghazi.  None.  Oops.

The Bigot Video meme was initially supposed to be a distant, mutli-layered, policy-analyst we're-so-smart-you-wouldn't-understand root-cause kind of explanation.  Not a boots-on-the-ground, check-the-surveillance-video kind of explanation.  But the former got merged with the latter.

78 Only after a series of edits -- with various State, White House, and CIA officials massaging the talking points -- do the talking points themselves "spontaneously evolve" to include a direct claim ... ace = ah, what "taking full responsibility" MEANS to mean considering the source Hillary/Obama. Spontaneous evolution requires a lot of heavy massage -- "molding" the outcome. Spontaneous combustion? Friction.

95 Harmon's comments sounded reasonable at first, but as I thought about them, they are ridiculous. She claims that on that Sunday, the White House and others were still confused about what happened. But evenif that were true (and it is not), thatdoesn't explain why Rice went out and said pretty definitively it was the video. Under Harmon's theory, Rice should have said "We're confused... it could have beena pre-planned terrorist attack, aresponse to thevideo, or something else." That's not what happened. The callers to various talk-shows have cured me of the need to listen to said shows. The only callers I can stand are Mark Levin's. They're usually earnest young people with interesting stories. Hannity seems to get a lot of opposing viewpoint callers. Sometimes they can even make a coherent argument!

135 Yeah, the whole "We didn't have 'actionable intelligence'" line they keep spouting drives me nuts. That's the part that's driving me insane. First- yes, they did have intelligence. I suppose they might claim what they had was not "actionable" but that's a purely subjective statement and, in retrospect, what they had *should have been* actionable. Second- even without specific "actionable" intelligence, they had months worth of requests for more security, security incidents, and warnings about general instability in the region. "Actionable intelligence" is a complete red herring. The consulate in Benghazi did not meet the minimum security standards as laid out by the State Department for such facilities. While there is a general waiver on those requirements for a temporary facility, the facility had been there long enough that the only way for that waiver to have continued would be for the Secretary of State specifically to have affirmatively authorized the lower security.

144 It's worth remembering that in 1994 a Chris Lehane-drafted memo conjured up the menace of the "vast rightwing conspiracy" by essentially claiming that any and all derogatory reports on Bill and Hillary Clinton were "conspiracy theories." And Since 2008, many Republicans borrowed a page out of their book by asserting that anyone who had questions regarding the legitimacy of Obama's citizenship status was a "Conspiracy Nut." No other motivation was allowed, if you questioned Obama's citizenship or "natural born" status, you were the equivalent of someone who believed in "Conspiracy theories." The suggestion that it was just Obama and his cronies lying about stuff wasn't allowed. It had to be a "Conspiracy Theory" because why else would you be questioning Obama's legitimacy? For what it's worth, i'm still not convinced he's even a citizen, and I am absolutely convinced that he's not a "natural born citizen" as the founders meant the term in 1787. (One cannot be a "natural citizen" if a law subsequent to 1787 s required to grant citizenship.) But at this point, the entire issue is moot.

Shrillary and Biteme didn't want their names on any decision either way (political viability doncha know) and never called him back after the initial contact and the initial (vague) response of the Prez. They could always say "Obama was contacted and made his decision." Generals arent going to exceed civilian authority an order a rescue mission without WH approval. So good people died, especially the heroic SEALS who took it upon themselves to show initiative. In this context, I think the Repubs are missing the central issues of malfeasance, abandoning our countrymen and failing to excercise leadership, by focusing too much on who-blamed-what on the video. Even as to the video I think they miss the main point, which is an American President throwing the concept of free speech under the bus based on the (false) premise that it "sparked" violence.

YES!

Notice that it wasn't just any old video they chose to blame it all on -- it was a Bigot Video.

The Left has made bigotry-eradication its No. 1 all-time, all-consuming agenda item.  They LOVE to talk about instances of bigotry.  It's their dead horse -- they'll beat it whenever they get a chance.

Here, they had an opportunity to change the conversation -- from talk about embassy security and arming-the-Libyan-rebels into yet another conversation about ... racism.

Or, something like racism, at least.

They tried to explain the attack/murder by saying that racism was the ROOT CAUSE, and ended up over-stating that explanation -- that racism was the IMMEDIATE cause.

But, since there never was a protest in Benghazi at all, that explanation fell apart.

@80 Oh, and fire Sharyl Atkinson and Lara Logan, because they keep reporting on a non-story

Logan was the 60 Minutes reporter, correct?  She had bad luck because the guy she interviewed isn't a credible witness.  His story doesn't match up with the generally accepted chain of events (something I quickly realized when I watched the interview).  And unfortunately for her, that was used as an excuse to drop the hammer on her.

If the Benghazi story starts to gain more traction despite the administration's best efforts, I suspect that guy is going to be trotted out and used in an attempt to tar anyone and everyone who supports continuing to look into this.  "See, you can't trust what anyone is saying about Benghazi!"

Fox News Sunday

Host Chris Wallace: "The top Libyan official says that the attack on Tuesday was, quote, his words ‘preplanned.’ Al-Qaida says the operation was revenge for our killing a top al-Qaida leader. What do we know?"

Rice: "Well, first of all, Chris, we are obviously investigating this very closely. The FBI has a lead in this investigation. The information, the best information and the best assessment we have today is that in fact this was not a pre-planned, premeditated attack. That what happened initially was that it was a spontaneous reaction to what had just transpired in Cairo as a consequence of the video. People gathered outside the embassy and then it grew very violent and those with extremist ties joined the fray and came with heavy weapons, which unfortunately are quite common in post-revolutionary Libya and that then spun out of control.

"But we don't see at this point signs this was a coordinated plan, premeditated attack. Obviously, we will wait for the results of the investigation and we don't want to jump to conclusions before then. But I do think it's important for the American people to know our best current assessment

Conspiracy cascades, 2: the role of reputation

. Conspiracy theories do not take

hold only because of information. Sometimes people profess belief in a conspiracy

theory, or at least suppress their doubts, because they seek to curry favor. Reputational

pressures help account for conspiracy theories, and they feed conspiracy cascades.

In a reputational cascade, people think that they know what is right, or what is likely

to be right, but they nonetheless go along with the crowd in order to maintain the good

opinion of others. Suppose that Albert suggests that the Central Intelligence Agency was

responsible for the assassination of President Kennedy, and that Barbara concurs with

Albert, not because she actually thinks that Albert is right, but because she does not wish

to seem, to Albert, to be some kind of dupe. If Albert and Barbara say that the CIA was

responsible for the assassination of President Kennedy, Cynthia might not contradict

them publicly and might even appear to share their judgment -- not because she believes

that judgment to be correct, but because she does not want to face their hostility or lose

their good opinion. It should be easy to see how this process might generate a cascade.

Once Albert, Barbara, and Cynthia offer a united front on the issue, their friend David

I guess I noted that the Left subverts the man MLK, they having reversed who MLK was, revised and repackaged into a Black Liberation Marxist "Theology" rebel promoting violence to get even when frustrated instead of peaceful protest. Leftards do NOT revere MLK's beliefs and life's martyrdom that ALL PEOPLE BE JUDGED BY THE QUALITY OF PERSONAL CHARACTER, most certainly color have NOTHING to do with "who" a person is. MLK had NOTHING to do with the current revisionist "living breathing" ACTIONABLE IN YOUR FACE THUGGERY of what Social Justice "is" and "deserves". All common/universal parlance from America's Sport baseball has been perverted and corrupted. Ex: the "level playing field" meant in the 1960s that all people be treated equally in courts of law, that Justice be not a "respecter" of a person's wealth or poverty when determining what "justice" be dealt, leniency for wealth, a sign of God's favor -- the grindstone in prison hard labor for the poor who "deserve" the pitfalls they stumble upon, true or not. As with all "good" things, going overboard with too much is stupid and harmful. Like throwing the baby out with the bath water. As if Libtards care about babies except in what profits they can bleed from "the children!"
