Happy Tuesday.

NYTimes' latest piece on the Malaysian plane is that (at least) the first change in course was the result of computer input, not manual control. So all those folks who suggested that the drastic course change was the result of a struggle in the cockpit really didn't know enough to say.

Morning. ‘rons and ‘ronettes.

IÂ’m sorry about the lack of stories, but I havenÂ’t come across anything really interesting or amusing lately.  So today will be the story of two pictures.

First, a Lewis Morley portrait from 1963:

http://tinyurl.com/cw8wcq3

The girl in the chair is Christine Keeler, who was at the height of her fifteen minutes of fame as one of the protagonists of the infamous Profumo Affair. In 1963, a major political scandal developed in Britain due to model and call-girl Keeler’s affairs with both John Profumo, the Conservative Party’s Minister of War, and Eugene Ivanov, a Soviet naval attaché.

“It was the very last shot on the roll,” Morley later said.  “I was walking away and turned back. She was in a perfect position and I just snapped it. I never found her sexy, though,” he concluded.  “She reminded me too much of Vera Lynn.”

But as the saying goes, nothing is new in the world.  Here is the actress Joan Blondell in 1932:

http://tinyurl.com/6hsm5j5

This picture was later banned under the auspices of the Hays Code, and even now it seems very risqué for the early ‘30s.  At the time of the portrait, Blondell was at the height of her career, having already appeared with James Cagney in Penny Arcade, SinnersÂ’ Holiday and The Public Enemy, and was a year away from her most famous role, that of scheming, but lovable Carol, the torch singer desperate to find a sugar daddy, in Gold Diggers of 1933.

Hope you all have a wonderful day.

It seems to me that Tesla could sell by their usual method in states with these provisions by including a "Mordita" charge for states with the dealer requirement.  The dealers don't really have to do anything but when you buy a Tesla on line, you pick which dealer will get his cut.  That allows Tesla to continue doing business the way they want, the car dealers get a fee for having political muscle and the whole process is transparent.

There ought to be some state that would be willing to do for car registration what Liberia and Panama do for ships.  In fact there ought to be some sort of lease process that allows Tesla buyers to avoid paying sales tax and registration fees in states that require mordita to car dealers.  Here is an opportunity for creative lawyering since the car is registered in and leased from a company in Utah, Wyoming or South Dakota to the individual private corporation that provides you with a company car.

50 Without dealers, it's gonna be awfully hard to get warranty service. Nevertheless, I encourage them to try this new business model for selling cars. Competition and all that. And add another 'oh shit' to the Crispy Creme list.

Daniel Greenfield has a well reasoned piece at his place about TFG and friends may be setting up the world for moar war through weakness. Here's a sample:

The bewildered responses to Russia's invasion of Ukraine are a naïve piece of theater that should have been retired in the 19th century, but somehow endures into the 21st as the lovers of peace insist on guaranteeing an end to aggression based on worthless pieces of paper that they have no intention of defending by armed force and then act surprised when their bluff is called and they frantically scramble to convince their own people that peace has been secured for our time.

They made this mess themselves and were abetted by the ptb's in the European Union who wanted Ukraine in their sphere of influence.

Let the Germans and French send their soldiers to die in the wheat fields along side their allies the Ukrainians.

I can not see why Ukraine is worth one single drop of American blood.

62 Today, while talking a morning walk the sunrise was beautiful. The sky was mottled blue and pink. Underneath that were small grey clouds with a ribbon of gold on the bottom. This lay on the a clear blue canopy of sky. Underneath that was an ocean of pale gold from which the sun arose in hot gold splendor. All this cast a pinkish light on the rooftops in the distance and on the spiky brown trees. While I was walking I thought of this hymn, "The God of Abraham Praise". The words are taken from "The Yigdal" of Daniel ben Judah. ca. 1400. They were paraphrased by Thomas Olivers in 1760 and set to a Jewish melody. Here is an instrumental version by Fernando Ortega with words to the hymn and set to lovely pictures of nature. Listening to it is a gentle way to start the morning and if you live in a place where the sun hasn't risen yet and it's a clear day consider going out if you can and and spending some time looking at the sunrise, taking some long slow breaths and if you're a person of religious faith consider praising God for His glorious creation. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IaYycKwVxQU Grace and peace be with you.

Everybody but everybody wanted their name on that in the late 50's, from the usual gang of commies to the Kingstons and Johnny Cash.

It's by Ed McCurdy, who you oughtta look up just to see how wide-ranging a career can be. He started out as the on-stage sideman for Sally Rand, pushing the fan dancer on her swing. Flacked for L and M cigarettes. This was the period when mainstream support for gun ban laws was at its peak, backed by WWII combat vets as well as Mothers' Club.

It wasn't just red-diaper babies who grew up on this kind of stuff. There's no limit to what everybody will believe in, at least for a while.

72 Without dealers, it's gonna be awfully hard to get warranty service. Fortunately there's a lot less routine warranty service to do on a pure electric car. No oil changes or spark plugs, just inspect the brakes and rotate the tires. Tesla could contract that through Meineke or a similar chain. Insty thinks that's the real reason dealers are fighting back, because overcharging for routine maintenance is a major profit center.

I haven't lost anything in the Ukraine.

-------------

I was told that The Ukraine is either *the* source or *a* source for Wolf Ammunition, an inexpensive brand of ammunition that's been exported to the US market for quite some time.  For certain chamberings it's pretty much the only game in town.

Between Putin's actions and a strict reading of Obama's "sanctions," it's arguable that this ammo source is going to be in danger.

75 Just finished scanning a Drudge linked AP article on Yahoo about Obama's latest whim to stop deportation.  Almost every comment was opposed, and most in a remarkably civil "what are we nuts" tone.

Wanted to sit every squish Republican who thinks amnesty or doing anything beyond securing the border and enforcing immigration law down and have these comments read to them.  Screaching minority advocacy groups with too much money garner way too much attention.  The gulf between political rhetoric and the real needs and wants of Americans is huge.  You could lose a 777 in it.

77 Good Morning, My brother is in the CCU(Critical Care Unit for Maine) instead of ICU here. He called me Sunday night at 11:30 to tell me they were keeping him in the hospital. No one called to tell me he was going to the hospital. I was pissed at rehab for not calling me. Yesterday I called hospital to speak with him & was surprised to find him in CCU. I wanted to talk to his nurse instead of him. HeÂ’s not sure what heÂ’s got. They transferred me to him, he thinks itÂ’s pneumonia again but wasnÂ’t sure. I would have preferred to talk to his nurse. The poor guy has been in the hospital or rehab for almost a year. HeÂ’ll never get out of it. HeÂ’s going to need full time care for the rest of his life, HeÂ’s 52 now. HeÂ’s a quadriplegic from the multiple strep infections. He was admitted in the hospital March 30, 2013.

79 "The president is famous for his iPad and his tweets" Somehow, no one is impressed with Mr. Clean Articulate, whether by tweet or by personal phone call. I can't imagine why. It isn't as if the guy knows how to communicate beyond memorized propaganda lines designed for fools to swallow. What Obi's 90-min "What we've got here is failure to communicate" conversation with Putin proves? Our POTUS and media prefer virtual reality to the real thing, because reality is hard (or something). Oval Office: Bozo fervently trusts in his ability to say the same thing non-stop and get what he wants; it always works for brats nagging parents, gimme gimme gimme, driving the adults at a loss for patience -- either giving into the brat's demand or the need to lay down the line on the brat's ass. Know when to stop, or something. Kremlin: Puti's good manners extend to patiently letting Obi drone on, and would even entertain conversation. Puti takes advantage of the opportunity to improve his spontaneous English conversational skills; Obi gets a hard tutorial had Obi the where with all to comprehend beyond clean and articulate. "amid a blizzard of telephone calls between the American president and world leaders as Obama sought to de-escalate the crisis." De-Escalate butthurt? Hardly "de-escalate" from Obama's escalating tensions administration. Even if Obi tried at this point to reverse HIS too big to fail course over the cliff: FAR TOO LITTLE, FAR TOO LATE. Who really is impressed by Obama's late to dinner phone calls? No one with a dog in the fight. Really, were it a simple fight with bets, who would lay money on Obama winning this confrontation? Impeach the bastard, prosecute and convict him for his crimes and corruption in Office, and be done with all the misery this guy mounts against everyone to the best of his ability. If the Head is rotten, the Body suffers as a lost cause. All said and done, what will be will be.

105 Vic, you're links look too depressing today (but excellent as always).

So greenies are all about prgrams that require a lot of government money, such as the Zip cars and rental bikes that a city will purchase and then leave in strategic places around the city for daily rental. Makes life convenient for a few at great expense. But heaven forbid people want to crate their own program, without government expense or management, that provides a lot more flexibility. Must.be.stopped.

I remember when I first moved to the DC area in '96 there was a new DC police chief. One of the first things he attempted to do was shut down the Slug stops in DC because they caused"traffic problems." Yeah, that lasted less than a month - people pushed back hard.

108 The United States is planning to give up its last remaining authority over the technical management of the Internet. The Commerce Department announced Friday that it will give the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), an international nonprofit group, control over the database of names and addresses that allows computers around the world to connect to each other. Administration officials say U.S. authority over the Internet address system was always intended to be temporary and that ultimate power should rest with the "global Internet community." But some fear that the Obama administration is opening the door to an Internet takeover by Russia, China, or other countries that are eager to censor speech and limit the flow of ideas. "If the Obama Administration gives away its oversight of the Internet, it will be gone forever," wrote Daniel Castro, a senior analyst with the Information Technology and Innovation Foundation. Castro argued that the world "could be faced with a splintered Internet that would stifle innovation, commerce, and the free flow and diversity of ideas that are bedrock tenets of world's biggest economic engine." Rep. Marsha Blackburn, a Tennessee Republican, called the announcement a "hostile step" against free speech. "Giving up control of ICANN will allow countries like China and Russia that don't place the same value in freedom of speech to better define how the internet looks and operates," she said in a statement. The brave new world is a coming

Jean, maybe they can. I just said that it is a different business model; in that model, there are some drawbacks. Maybe they can fly in technicians to wherever they are needed, and do this cheaper than having service departments in fixed locations. I encourage them to try, and greatly wish that states like NJ would butt the fuck out.

It's the last part that is most unlikely to happen though.

124 90. Stringer Davis "As a member of the GM family and as a mom with a family of my own, this really hits home for me." As if a bad mom makes all mothers look bad. Not buying that. Just discrediting her poor performance based, obviously, on her inability to think clearly. From my own experience re-entering the public workforce at a job interview when my kids were in elementary school, the prospective employer read my resume, and then asked me to describe my personal interests, and being a young mother, I expressed pride in raising two good children. To which he (law firm) responded while standing up and walking out of the room: "Anyone can make babies. There's nothing special about that." So what? All men are evil? All lawyers are MFs? Pfft. /trust but verify/ There's plenty of asshole in this world. Gender has nothing to do with that reality. Her hypocrisy impresses no one with a brain. Neither does her stupidity. This is the same cut throat who axed every other female she ever met in order to be the only one around, floating on acrid gas to the glass ceiling "empowered by equal opportunity". I've said all along, I hate the word "empower" because rather than encouraging self reliance and self determination to cultivate one's own talent-skill set in a productive manner in society, progressive Marxist liberals have usurped the word (with all other words) to mean the opposite. Empower in the PC context of social justice (some people are more special and deserve the right to exert their bigotry) legitimizes and legalizes THEFT. Empower: redistribute (steal) your liberty in order to leave you powerless in the incompetent "more special" authoritarian hands empowered with tyranny to abuse you and the world at large.

136 Today I take my mom to the ortho who removed her infected knee replacement, put in a spacer block, and put her in a straight leg brace for maybe six months. I've gotten used to my mom talking politics at the top of her voice in every waiting room we are in, but wish she would not in front of the doc, and especially when she is hospitalized and wholly dependent on SCOAMTT supporters. Please cross your fingers for me that she will let me bathe her today. Wah.

139 What was the passing rate of students in NYC again? http://tinyurl.com/q5lk4b5 New York Mayor Bill de Blasio could soon ink an unprecedented nine-year collective bargaining agreement with the United Federation of Teachers, just months after the city’s teachers union helped elect him to office. The New York Post reports de Blasio wants to negotiate a retroactive nine-year contract with the UFT that would run from 2009 through 2018, and would push the next round of union negotiations back until after the 2017 elections. The teachers union, as well as the New York State Nurses Association – which have been without a contract since 2010 – are reportedly looking for substantial raises that are expected to run into the billions, the Post reports. Members of the teachers union have not had a significant overall raise lately, although most have almost certainly collected their automatic, annual step raises. “The nurses’ and teachers’ unions missed out on two years of consecutive raises – of 4 percent each – that nearly every other union got under the Bloomberg administration,” Fuck unions. The should be outlawed at once.

I really hate business women who use their gender or being a mom as if it's some sort of super-power (the flip side of the rude comments made to her during an interview panzernashorn mentioned above). Barro being a mom is irrelevant to the GM recall, so why mention it? Reminds me of that crap Pelosi was peddling when she made Speaker of the House, waving a broom and grandstanding w/the gradkids as if being a mom/grandmother somehow gave her special Speaker power. She was just as corrupt as her Dem predecessors, and she certainly didn't join with her House sisters to clean up DC.

Another federal lawmaker on Monday joined the growing chorus of criticism over a dramatic increase in State Department refusals of Israeli visa applications.

Rep. Grace Meng (D-N.Y.) sent a letter to Secretary of State John Kerry requesting detailed information about the rejection rate for U.S. visa applications filed by Israeli nationals between the ages of 21 and 27.

Her inquiry follows a near 400 percent spike in Israeli visa refusals in recent years. The refusal rate for Israeli visa applicants, while fluctuating somewhat from year to year, has risen from 2.5 percent in fiscal 2007 to 9.7 percent last year, according to State Department figures.

Under questioning at a congressional hearing last week, Kerry maintained that there is no bias. “I can guarantee you that visa applications are treated fairly and similarly in all places,” Kerry told members of the House Foreign Affairs Committee.

The problem with that old diet was in its restrictions. Pork was verboten. Red meat of any kind was discouraged. So basically we ate a diet of chicken and fish. Don't get me wrong, I don't mind chicken and fish, but I love me some steak and bacon. So we're trying the Primal diet (Paleo, but I get to keep some amount of dairy), and it's working really well for both of us so far. Also, it's food we *like* to eat. And, in 3 more weeks I'll get to start adding cheat days. One day a week where, as long as I watch portion size, I don't have to worry about food being on the diet plan at all.

I get the perv vibe.

And somebody better get into the high schools 'cause it's still all the rage to say, "that's so gay" with the young fellers my son hangs with.  They also say you are marked for ridicule and laughter if you drive a Prius.  It's great to live in SC.

205 @204 Right on, and IIRC Friedman's next argument was, why not use spoons?

206 203 I'm so tired of the "I'm a mom with a family". First, how does one be a mom WITHOUT a family?

Broken homes: mom abandoning her family to "find" herself a new life...

Or having the father thrown out.  Either way.

207 The actions by the Seattle City council as less about protecting the Taxi industry then about protecting the transit racket. The local pols get big money and support from the transit union (we have outrageously overpaid bus drivers here). They have been restricting the # of cab licenses for years to protect the buses and the real threat of rideshare services was to them. They have done nothing to crack down on the shady "towncar" services that are plentyful in the DT Seattle core because those compete with taxis but minimally impact buses.

209 I especially detest Michelle Obama being referred to as Mom-in-Chief.
She's not my mom, and she certainly has no role in my kid's upbringing despite her intrusive attempts.

210 Auto dealers are small businessmen who trend Republican. Elon Musk is a prog billionaire. The people who buy Teslas are going to be by far Democrats. From a politics standpoint, a no brainer for Christie. Politics is about constituencies. Posted by: blaster at March 18, 2014 09:00 AM (4+AaH) Not interested in someone who would punish their opponents by restricting their access to free markets. The conservative in me rejects that premise. Christie can go fuck himself.

212 Posted by: Carol at March 18, 2014 09:05 AM (gjOCp) It's not. I'm always full (well, nearly always. I forgot to bring snacks to work today ), and I even get dessert on a regular basis. My biggest losses were in the first couple of days. In the next week or two I expect to be down to 4-5 lb a week. In 6-8 weeks (from when I started), I'll probably be down pretty close to my goal and I'll slow down to probably 1-2 lb a week.

215 "So all those folks who suggested that the drastic course change was the result of a struggle in the cockpit really didn't know enough to say." If it's true it actually makes a pure accident less likely. It's easy to imagine one of the pilots pulling a quick turn west in the rough direction of an airport while in the middle of trying to desperately trying to fight some sudden emergency, while both pilots felt too overloaded to speak on the radio. It's harder to imagine him taking time to enter a new waypoint into the automatic pilot instead. Especially a waypoint which was totally wrong, either for making an emergency landing or for continuing the scheduled flight. The catch is that this doesn't seem to be based on new information. There's already been a map published, based on radar data, which is supposed to show that MH370 flew a scenic route through a number of different waypoints on the far side of Malaysia to the one it was supposed to stay on. This just seems to be based on the same information, or even a partially-walked-back version of it. For whatever reason, the US sources who have been leaking things to the NYT etc. have probably been pushing the hostile-actor theory earliest and hardest of all the governments involved. We'll have to see if they were right in this (possibly based on intel they aren't sharing, at least with the press) or not.

217 That's so gay anti campaign. Amazing where we are now regarding free speech. Queer Eye for the Straight Guy would be excoriated today, a mere ten years after the show's debut. The five gay guys on the show were the one's always making the gay jokes. "That's so gay" was one of their oft used lines regarding some of the stuff they found in the straight guys' homes. The opening segments where they would storm into the bewildered straight guy's home and review his clothes, home, grooming, etc. was always hilarious, good natured, and fun. They made gentle fun of the guy and fun of themselves. They probably couldn't find a sponsor today for the fear that the gay mafia has instilled....

222 Oh. Yeah, "spoon crack." Had that mixed up with "crack spoon."

Has "bullying" always been code-speak for "anti-gay"? It seems like 101% of the current anti-bullying crusade has to do only with gender and sexual identity issues. Used to be, you could get bullied for being chubby, or gangly, or one year smaller than the biggest 2-year-behind lunk in class, or Protestant or Catholic or black or, I swear I have seen it, not Polish. But in the ads, it's always teh ghey. Hmm.

What I see a-happenin' is that all ghey-like identities get subsumed within the Borg, and then we get back to good old fashioned kidz'll-be-kidz terrorism, directed by the in-crowd teachers.
