Two Lefties Grouse About Obama at Salon, With One Suggesting He Might be a "Sociopath"
— Ace

I'm not sure this is anything, but you be the judge.

The bulk of the dialogue between Thomas "What's the Matter with Kansas?" Frank and a guy named Adolph Reed Jr is mostly about their upset that Obama isn't sufficiently pro-labor or pro-income redistribution.

I'll leave it up to you add to your own editorial punctuation to that sentence, but, for the lazy among you, here are some pre-written editorial punctuation marks you can just slip in there: (!), (?), (!!?), (????!!!!), (WTF, DUDE?!?!!)

Reed's central criticism of the contemporary left is that it has become focused on identity politics. As he says in the interview: "The problem with a notion of equality or social justice that's rooted in the perspectives of multiculturalism and diversity is that from those perspectives you can have a society that's perfectly just if less than 1 percent of the population controls 95 percent of the stuff, so long as that one percent is half women and 12 percent black, and 12 percent Latino and whatever the appropriate numbers are gay."

This he attributes to "electoralitis," the imperative of electing Democrats to public office. While Reed and Frank acknowledge that such an approach has been successful in some elections, they are scornful of it. Says Frank: "[Democrats] think they have an iron clad coalition behind them. They have this term for it: the Coalition for [actually 'of'] the Ascendent. I forget what it is. Made up of these groups, and labor is not one of them."

Reed disdains what he calls "the cult of the most oppressed," the idea "that there's something about the purity of these oppressed people that has the power to condense the mass uprising. I've often compared it to the cargo cults. . . . As my dad used to say, 'If oppression conferred heightened political consciousness there would be a People's Republic of Mississippi.' "

Go to Taranto (the link goes to BotW) for the discussion of "sociopathy." Reed analogizes Obama's "blank slate" persona to that of a sociopath, notoriously manipulative individuals who can become whatever their intended target needs them to be. He doesn't push on the idea too hard (and it does seem a bit overmuch), but I thought it would make for a good screaming headline.

The media taught me that!

10 Looks to me like two more libs spouting gobbldygook. Sort of a leftist version of what Our Conservative Betters like to do.

In short, they're glossing over Choom Boy's America-hating sociopathy by cloaking it in polysyllabic buzzwords.

If we ever get down to reality, President Historic First© is toast, as everyone knows he is the most unfit individual ever to hold the nation's highest office. But as long as we keep pussyfooting around the basic issue, he's home free and can do his evil work unhindered.

Posted by: MrScribbler at March 11, 2014 08:35 AM (jiM5S)

11 For a guy who cares so much about the oppressed, have you ever seen him be genuinely sad? Nope. He seems pretty free of emotion except when he's pissed off because he didn't get his way or when he's mocking. That's pretty much it. Remember, he was lauded for his even, "cool" temperament.

The reason that this class war shit and socialism never really took hold here is:

Our value of private property and our very large middle class.

Also, most of the now rich were poor/middle class at one point.  We have no landed aristocracy, outside of Washington.

I don't know about  the sociopath business, but the analysis you quote here looks pretty accurate.

The Democrat Party is very lost, and whatever the people think are their unifying principles, aren't.  If any of them ever stopped to think logically about why they support it, they wouldn't.  Which of course, they won't, so they do.

What's funny to me is that these nutters complaining about Obama could just as easily, in another time and place, have been complaining about Comrade Stalin's soft stance on the Ukrainian Problem. It was at a press conference a while back, when one of the Legacy Media stepped out of line and asked an actual semi-tough question. A flicker of genuine hatred passed across the JEF's face, and he made some weird cut-the-neck motion with his hand. He looked in that moment exactly like a Third World dictator or a Kim Jong Un, sending the reporter to the firing squad. I remember Red Eye covered it, with Gutfeld wondering what exactly the neck-cut motion was supposed to mean. All I know was, it was chilling to the core, and I think it was a brief moment when the JEF showed his true self. The look on his face was pure, unadulterated hatred. I think I'll start calling him Barack Jong Dumb.

Given that Obama's parents both abandoned him, it wouldn't be surprising if he really did develop a personality disorder. But problems in his character may account for much without indicating a true PD. Sociopathy is not curable through therapy or anything else. If you know someone with this disorder, stay away or at least be always-vigilant if you must have any contact at all.

A student questioned if she was optimistic about the future of the country. She stated, “I’m very optimistic about the power of minorities to change the dialogue in this country.” Yeah i mean it's not like she has an ax to grind or anything?

"Reed analogizes Obama's "blank slate" persona to that of a sociopath, notoriously manipulative individuals who can become whatever their intended target needs them to be."

A sociopath is afflicted with a very specific and (fortunately for us) very rare personality disorder, one for which there is no known treatment or cure and one that seems to be entirely too broadly defined and widely assigned by mental health professionals. Obama admits to being a 'blank screen' upon which others assign certain attributes and traits he may or may not possess, but I think he was making an observation--an accurate one--not evincing sociopathic tendencies by making that statement. So yeah, Reed's analogy may be somewhat on-the-mark but I think it opens up a lot of room for confusion. Reed isn't saying Obama is a sociopath. He's making an analogy, saying Obama is like a sociopath, which is confusing and weird since someone like a sociopath is a sociopath but not in the clinical sense.  Or something.

Personally, I think President Obama is a committed, hard-Left ideologue who has carefully (and largely successfully)  hidden his Marxist core convictions for decades now--which makes him smarter than men like Frank or Reed, whose out-loud-and-proud approach to Leftist ideals would've made Obama unelectable in 2008.

Posted by: AmishDude at March 11, 2014 12:33 PM (T0NGe) Seriously, this is what just boggles my mind. The only election matrix that Obama beat Romney on was "Cares about people like me". The only one. Economy, foreign policy, spending, governing...Romney won them all, except for "caring". Aside from how personally creepy I find it to believe that having a politician "care" about you is desirable (or even believable, nobody you don't know cares about you. Deal with it), in his particular case, what on earth has Obama ever done to make him seem compassionate? I can't think of a single thing, but people believe it. Hell, I even had a knock down drag out with a close family member that almost ended our relationship over this very issue. It's just bizarre.

Eventually he ended up in literally a bomb shelter hiding on January 1, 2000 (Y2K stuff) and the last I heard he isn't even a pastor anywhere. People eventually caught on but the damage in his wake was epic.

Of course they won't.  America so far, hasn't accepted it (a real Marxist solution).  Aside from the facts that it will fail predictably, having theoretically achieved that goal, what other solutions could they push to cure the grievances of the chattering classes? Upping the chocolate ration?

Once they lose their ability to promise solutions to the various grievances of those identity groups, the gig is up.  They will no longer have any appeal.  Here, it *was* pot legalization.  Now it is minimum wage increases.  Gotta keep those lemmings coming back to the polls/trough for some more socialism.

Its one of the few things he really knows how to do and likes to do. It surrounds him with adulation and has an immediate, tangible measure of success, so it feeds his ego.
Obama is not going to suspend the constitution or stay in office. He can have everything he ever wanted without the responsibility of being president. In fact, not being president will sanctify him into a saint of heroic proportions, a misunderstood genius, a towering presidential intellect who was so far above people that they couldn't catch up to him.
He'll be the go-to guy on every presidential issue and his proclamations held up as a glorious voice of God. He'll get all the parties and all the fun, and will still get to do fundraisers, but won't have anyone interrupting him eating his waffles.
Why would he want to be president when he gets all the bennies with none of the work?

Presidents Bush were oddities in politics. I'm thinking you diagnosed yourself because you're bothered that you don't feel as much emotion as you think you should. I can't imagine a mental health professional--especially a practicing psychiatrist--diagnosing someone as a 'limited sociopath'.

I've experienced a certain amount of violence and death in my life, as many have.  It bothered me at the time that it didn't bother me at the time--or later, for that matter. My lack of emotional response bothered me so much that I saw a psychiatrist about it years later, as a civilian. My responses , according to the psychiatrist, were within the normal range. Some react more, some less than others to varied stimuli. Maybe you fall in that category, as well.

155 More than anything, Obama strikes me as deeply insecure. The instant lapsing into sarcasm or tantrums when challenged, the pathological dependence on the teleprompter, his isolation away from his own Cabinet members, so he can remain in the company of star struck idol worshippers and devoted handlers. He's a scared little man, in way over his head.

I voted for Nader in 2000 partly because I lived in Connecticut and it wasnÂ’t a big choice because I knew the Democrat was going to take the state anyway. But partly also because I had lived in Connecticut in the Â’80s and I had a track record to maintain of not ever voting for Joe Lieberman for anything.

Well Margarita, when he goes away he can pal around with Colin Powell, his ardent supporter and I believe a potential candidate that the GOPe wanted to push/support for even higher office.

The more I think about it, the more I start to question, just who in the fuck are we voting for and why GOP???????!!!!!!!!!!

Softer statism??  awesome.  I am more and more of a mind that if the conservatives do not purge and take over the party completely, then I'm gone and it's third party time.  And shut up libertarians, Ayn Rand day is never going to happen.

163 Presidents Bush were oddities in politics. Neither one seemed driven by their ego or self importance, neither one seemed the usual towering arrogance that characterizes people who think they are so important they need to be in power. They are that super rare bird (rara avis, to swipe from knucklehead Christoper Buckley) who were in office to serve, rather than gratify their self-importance.

It wasn't towering arrogance, it was towering benevolence? They graced us with their leadership because of their generosity? Jesus, there's a kool-aid drinker in every bunch.

It's ok to jump ship now.  The litany of failures that are so numerous that they can non longer be concealed (or can now be safely revealed now that the election is over) make an easy excuse for them to distance themselves.  Of course, as the failures racked up during the last six years, I'll wager these same two traitors were voting Obama and demonizing anyone who didn't.

In short, there's no longer a price to pay for telling the truth and saying the guy is an abject failure.

166 This is, ultimately, what destroyed the Republicans, and its what I warned about President Bush doing under the Rove Doctrine. The entire job of congress was focused around getting more Republicans into office, and all they did was eventually enrage the public into throwing them out.
The Democrats are doing the same thing, but it will take longer for the backlash to hit them for several reasons, as I see it:
1) They've so successfully demonized the GOP that people still think them an even worse choice.
2) They didn't get involved in a war that the media and entertainment community succeeded in turning unpopular.
3) Their followers are less informed, analytical, and more dependent on government.
There's a number 4 as well: Democrats cheat so hard, so blatantly, and so consistently that they can hang onto power as long as they get that vote within 3% or so - the margin of fraud - so it would take a huge margin to defeat them.
In the end, though, it doesn't matter. We had our last, desperate, long shot at turning things around in 2012 and that didn't happen.

Heathen.

Similarly, if you are serving your grouse with all the trimmings—game chips, bread sauce, flavorsome gravy and redcurrant jelly—then you need a full-bodied red to stand up to the barrage of flavors. I would opt from something peppery from the northern Rhône from somewhere such as Côte Rôtie, Cornas or Hermitage. Thierry Allemand, Chapoutier and Clape are all worth looking out for.

Just last week I met a couple of retired federal workers living on a good pension who told me that the Republicans were destroying the Middle Class. Seems, according to one of them, that suddenly neither of their incomes are keeping up with expenses under Obama and it is the Republicans' fault for blocking full-on Socialism. No really. That's what they think. They are not Democrats they are Progressives. If President Obama had the IRS pass a regulation that minorities got a pass on OCare penalties because Justice while these retired Whites paid extra these idiots would blame Old White Republicans. Ditto if we became full on Socialist and their properties were seized and given away. It would never, ever, ever, ever enter their minds that "All men are created equal" was written to treat everyone equally under the law regardless of color, religion or socioeconomic status. They have "evolved" past the Constitution and BoRs. They are writing their own Progressive Constitution that is a living breathing document embodied in their LightWorker™.

204 Sorry, but the fatal flaw if all politicians is egomania. That includes bith Bushes and Reagan. You don't get into politics without being self-serving, no matter what comes out of your mouth. Posted by: DangerGirl and her Sanity Prod This is true. Some people can control their raging egotism enough to actually work with other people and have some sort of empathy towards people. Reagan and GHW Bush could do that. Clinton could fake it well. GW Bush sort of developed that, but as Sean Bannion said, was actually sort of a mean sarcastic guy with others. OBama and Hillary! have no real measure of empathy for others. This is the hallmark of the modern politician. This is what people will vote for, the faux emoticon politician who is a manipulative sociopath. This is Harry Reid and Nancy Pelosi. This is Mitch McConnell. And although people mock Boehner for a couple of times he teared up, he is not an emotional iceberg with others, not a full on sociopath. Schumer, McCain, Durbin, and a host of others have significant sociopathic tendencies. They have proven over the years that they really DON'T connect with other people. Arlen Specter was a clinical sociopath, as is Eric Holder.

209 ...(and it does seem a bit overmuch)... Ace, I understand you don't want to over-hype the psychological dimension, but as a mere commenter, I'll take that plunge. According to the Hare Psychopathy Checklist commonly used to diagnose psychopathy, these are the pertinent factors ----- Facet 1: Interpersonal Glibness/superficial charm Grandiose sense of self-worth Pathological lying Cunning/manipulative ----- Facet 2: Affective Lack of remorse or guilt Emotionally shallow Callous/lack of empathy Failure to accept responsibility for own actions ----- Facet 3: Lifestyle Need for stimulation/proneness to boredom Parasitic lifestyle Lack of realistic, long-term goals Impulsivity Irresponsibility ----- Facet 4: Antisocial Poor behavioral controls Early behavioral problems Juvenile delinquency Revocation of conditional release Criminal versatility Many short-term marital relationships Promiscuous sexual behavior ----- He seems to posses all of the traits in facets 1-3 and most of those in 4. For that matter, most politicians are almost 100% on facets 1-3 (Clinton, McCain for instance). Psychologists recognize that a privileged upbringing can mask most of Facet 4.
