Gaming Thread 2/23/2014
— Gang of Gaming Morons!

Though you could make a case that the avalanche of game releases started last week, this is the week where it really starts. Which ones will bomb in this swarm of new games? Personally, I wouldn't be surprised if four of the big titles this week will disappoint

Also, the PS4 released in Japan last week on Friday but from early reports, the less said the better. People really need to grasp the concept that console gaming in Japan is pretty much dead.

NEWS

• New Deep Down trailer

Virgin Gaming trying to turn Street Fighter money matches legit. Won't work but still nice to see

Kenji Eno's last game might live on after his death. Makes me happy.

• PLEASE DON'T SUCK! PLEASE DON'T SUCK! PLEASE DON'T SUCK! The inclusion of an unspecified Doom beta is intriguing as well

• New story trailer of The Order 1886. Eh, totally haven't see anything like this countless times before /s

Sony claiming they sold 5.3 million PS4 units. Decent number a videogame console

• Remember how Harmonix was rumored to be working on a FPS? Well, it's being co-developed by Hidden Path and it's called Chroma

Pretty interesting breakdown of the TitanFall "beta" and considering how poorly it was ran from EA's side, that 2 million number is pretty good between PC and Xbox One.

*********************************************************

Stuff I've been playing

Yep, Double Helix really did learn how to make decent games as Strider is pretty good as long as you play it on hard. Worth the $15.

Haven't gotten too far into it but EDF2025 has quickly made me forget about Insect Armageddon even though it's probably the worst performing game in the series (that's quite a feat).

Tengami has been getting a lot of praise and it deserves it for the most part. The game is frigging gorgeous and the majority of the puzzles are hard but not aggravating. It's biggest problem is that it's way too short. I didn't really rush through it but it still only ended up just under 2 hours. And sadly with it being the iOS marketplace, that's a not exactly a lot of content for $5.

And with the announcement that my corp in EVE were leaving Gentlemen's Agreement, I've been in a mad dash to consolidate everything I own.

NEW RELEASES

Thief (360, XBox One, PS3, PS4 and PC) - 10 years since Deadly Shadows disappointed many people and from the early reports, this might disappoint people once again with small areas.

Professor Layton and the Azran Legacy (3DS) - I'll totally copt to the fact that I couldn't finish Miracle Mask, it frankly bored me which kinda sucks as I like this series. That being said, I might pick this one up since it's supposed to be the last one to have Layton as a main character.

Plants Vs Zombies: Garden Warfare (360, Xbox One) - I like that they're doing something different with the brand and I think it looks fun but man, I can't see how this game doesn't get lost in the shuffle. The only outside chance is it becomes a hit with kids on other platforms.

Castlevania: Lords of Shadow (360, PS4 and PC) - Well, it's the last game in the trilogy so there is a positive. Hopefully Robert Carlyle and Patrick Stewart didn't fall asleep in the recording booth this time.

Tales of Symphonia Chronicles (PS3) - It's an up-rez port of the Japanese PS2 release of Tales of Symphonia and a uprez version of it's sequel, Tales of Symphonia: Dawn of the New World that was on the Wii. If you didn't play these on the Gamecube and Wii and like JRPGs, you really owe it to yourself to pick this bundle up. And it will only cost you $40 (unless of course you bought the Collector's Edition which I believe was $100). Would buy an uprez port of both Baiten Kaitos games.

Shadowrun: Dragonfall (PC) - It's a few months late but the "expansion pack" (It's a new campaign) to last year's Shadowrun reboot is coming out. Other than shotguns being way too op, I really dug the reboot. I'll probably be picking this up in the near future.

Basement Crawl (PS4) - The totally not a Bomberman clone finally comes out after a few delays. Eh I guess, visual style isn't doing anything for me.

I know it's a small thread but I've been crushed all week with RL stuff, Olympics and a bunch of other crap. Everything will get back to normal next week

1 anyone else get into the Wildstar beta? Doesn't do anything different but it's not that bad

2 Apropos of not much, but a buddy and I were talking about Myst, and we both admitted to not being able to get past the first scene.

Years later it still irritates me.

6 CBD, yes, I remember when I got Myst, and I thought, wow, this is rendered beautifully, but, couldn't really get anywhere with it. I got the book, then kind of said, well what's the point if I am going to do that, and what I was able to solve using it seemed to be an underwhelming reward for the effort.

Posted by: blaster at February 23, 2014 11:29 AM (4+AaH)

7 My problem with Myst is that I never could get it even to run.

My parents had bought a PC as soon as those newfangled "CD ROM" machines came out. Yay! Only, that meant, it was buggy as shit and wouldn't play half the games that came out. Myst was unfortunately one of them.

Return to Zork was another, but I found a workaround (open the CD drive after it started, then close it again).

Strider was fun, last level was frustrating, but a fun romp otherwise,  money pretty well spent ($10 or $12 would be better). Game mechanics were sound but had a lot of trouble maxing the 'rage-gauge' -the fights weren't intense enough or there weren't enough enemies to slay...

Will give another go to try to get 100% completion.

28 I got an Amazon gift card from my in laws, as usual, for my birthday, so I went to buy CivilizationIII, after reading the story about the guy who is still playing a ten-year Civ game. Anyway, I'm a PS2 guy at best, very non-gamer,but I enjoyed Civ when I was younger so figured what the hell. Had to install Steam after I bought it, which annoyed me at first, but it all went smoothly and I think I'm getting the hang of what Steam does. Still on my initial civ3 game, had a nice thing going until the fucking Iroquois got a bug up their ass and interfered with my rout of the Germans and the Celts.

I haven't watched today but yesterday CNN international was actually doing a surprisingly decent job covering both Ukraine and Venezuela.

30 Video games are a lot of fun. Having said that I'm not surprised at all that Maduro is in trouble in Venezuela. I strongly felt he'd run into problems very quickly after Chavez took the dirt nap. The guy has the charisma of a slug and the intellect of a turd. Chavez sucked too but he at least had some political chops to help him stay in power.

32 I recently played a game called "pong" on something called an "atari" that is apparently a sort of ping-pong played on a television screen, instead of paddles you have this knob contraption that you move a bar of light on the screen with. Great fun! I say, this modern life is quite amazing sometimes.

38 Question about games like Call of Duty on PC. Do I need a joystick/handheld controller? What kind? All I use for games now is a keyboard and mouse.

you can play with a controller but you'll get destroyed in multi using one

40 So a keyboard and mouse are sufficient?

Posted by: Lincolntf at February 23, 2014 12:17 PM (ZshNr)

41 @37: the pro players all use keyboard/mouse.  It's considered heresy to play CoD and other first-person shooters with a controller, although Goldeneye and the Halo series made it kind of acceptable.

I am very excited about The Order and the new trailer blows chunks.

This.  The new trailer shows the setting and outline.  I am aware of those things which is why I'm interested in the game.  Please show something else next time.

44 So a keyboard and mouse are sufficient?

Again, keyboard + mouse is considered the Only True Way to play those games.  You will be laughed at and considered a "squeaker" (ie, pre-pubescent) if you show up online with a controller.

Posted by: Ian S. at February 23, 2014 12:20 PM (102Hx)

45 I had assumed that there had been major advances in controller tech and all serious gamers would have tricked out, forty button, six-trigger jobbies. I'm trying to imagine playing CoD with a mouse/keyboard, can't quite picture it yet. Have only played on PS2.

54 I like the first version of Thief a lot; it was atmospheric and the sneaking gameplay while not original was very well executed. But, damn, the supposed master thief, the most fearsome criminal in all the land - can't climb a f'ing wall.

56 The last game that I played all the way through was House of the Dead II on Sega Dreamcast...I mostly buy games to hang out in the cool environments they create...would be just as happy if there was a 'no stress' mode that I could just wander around in the game.

58 Ok so I don't play video games anymore but used to back when the first Wolfy game came out. Endless corridors of brick or wood texture, an occasional treasure chest or gold, and lots of Nazis. I've been around since before Pong and the last thing I played was Jeporady on a Wii but for some reason this new Wolfy game looks interesting. Probably just another Dukenukem shootemup though with cut scenes.

62 On my fourth go-round of Skyrim.  Gods, but I love that game most of the time!  The Black Books are yuck, which kind of knocks out the Dragonborn DLC, but Hearthfire is great, and so is the Dawnguard one.  For the first time, I've managed to get both Serana and Marcurio as followers, which is great.  I'm mostly a fighter, except for using whatever they miscall the Pathfinding spell, so it's really great having two powerful spellcasters covering my back!

63 a HA! I got my old copy of Grim Fandango to work in Windows 7

First you need the CDs (which I bought long ago, still have)

You need this next -
http://quickandeasysoftware.net/software/grim-fandango-setup

And then when done you need the patch, gfupd101. This part isn't easy to find as the ftp site seems to be down.

Oh, and you need to save it a lot (F1). Because sometimes the sound skips

Posted by: boulder terlit hobo at February 23, 2014 04:13 PM (30eLQ)

64 Okay, so Plants vs. Zombies has whored itself out.  That looks like total crap.  It's a strategy game, and now it's just... the same old risk-aversive garbage.  It's too bad the video game industry has been plagued by Hollywood blockbuster cancer.
