No Keystone Or ObamaCare Bailout Repeal For Debt Ceiling Hike
— DrewM

At least they are cutting to the chase.

GOP leaders had been looking at pairing legislation boosting the debt limit to either an authorization of the pipeline or rolling back a portion of ObamaCare. But after presenting those ideas to members and huddling Wednesday, they determined neither would receive 218 votes from House Republicans.
That left Republican leaders with no clear alternative to addressing the debt limit, which the Treasury Department has said needs to be raised by the end of February.

Instead, it now appears that a combination of Republicans and Democrats will be needed to get a debt-limit boost through the House.

I know some House conservatives are saying there's no point attaching anything since the GOP will eventually cave but I find it hard to believe they'd have voted no if Boehner had brought a debt ceiling hike to the floor with either one of those provisions attached.

It's funny how after repeatedly telling conservatives he doesn't care about their votes (fiscal cliff, Sandy relief, Violence Against Women Act, re-opening the government, the sequester busting Ryan-Murray deal and agreeing to link food stamps with Ag subsidies) Boehner is suddenly acting as if he cares what House conservatives want.

In other news, Mitch McConnell has basically announced that if you're opposed to legalizing millions of illegal immigrants you better hope the GOP doesn't take control of the Senate next year.

McConnell indicated the Democratic-controlled Senate's insistence on comprehensive legislation is at impossible odds with the House Republican majority's preferred piecemeal approach to immigration reform.

"I think we have an irresolvable conflict here. The Senate insists on comprehensive. The House says it won't go to conference with the Senate on comprehensive and wants to look at step-by-step," he told reporters after a meeting with the Senate Republican conference.

"I don't see how you get to an outcome this year with the two bodies in such a place."

It seems the implication of his argument is that the only way to get to a deal is to have both Houses in the hands of the same party. Well, if we go the House GOP way we're still looking at massive legalization of some sort. So if you are opposed to that...you better hope the current stalemate holds. That's an odd pitch from the man who wants to be Majority Leader but there it is.

7 Liberal Republicans are a bigger problem then Democrats. This has been true in the long term for a while, but now it is true in the short term as well. A Republic can't work when all the candidates on the ballot hold pretty much the same positions...which is at odds with the electorate's views.

53 He asked, “First, have you ever heard of the 1982 Consent Decree?”

No, I was only five then Â… and whatÂ’s a consent decree?

“Well, my young friend, that’s when the RNC pulled some real stupid tricks in New Jersey and got caught with their pants down and got sued by the democrats. I guess they were losing in court ‘cause they settled the case by agreeing to sign that consent decree.”

Ok, so there were dirty tricks, but whatÂ’s the consent decree and why is it a problem?

“Because the dumbass Republican’ts agreed to limit their ability to fight voter fraud in minority districts, and not just in New Jersey, but in the entire country. And that’s not even the worst part – they didn’t even put a time limit on it – the limitation could go on forever.”

No. He mostly a master manipulator.

The masses will follow the meme and empty pathos arguments. THey don't follow the logical. It's how Obama got elected.

Obama does thing like going on Bill OReilly to show he's a "regular" guy. Meanwhile he appoints a guy who tried to get a convicted cop-killer free as the head of DoJ Civil Rights division.

He know exactly what he is doing. People are either to blind, dumb, gullible or plain in agreement with him to notice.

Besides- look at Republicans. Think they are going to help or maybe set things straight once they regain power?

Nope. They are cowards trying to protect their own skin. Once they regain control we will hear all about doing the "right" thing as an excuse for their weakness. Meanwhile they've followed the Democrats on things like immigration and raising the debt. But, ya know, they can't wield the big stick (as the Democrats have) to set things right.

I mostly blame Republicans for our current situation. They are too weak, inconsistent and immersed in the Washington mentality to provide a consistent, loud, forceful and righteous defense.

Oops. Sorry for the screed.

DeMark compared today's market to that preceding the Black Friday crash in 1929.

"23 days aligns with the low end on Monday. And subsequent to that, we had a four-day rally, and then the market unraveled — went down 48%. We are currently at that inflection point. Like I said, so far, everything is aligned. We think the next two to three days are extremely critical."

Me too. If they were fighting It'd be one thing. But this is like an army standing by while its citizens are destroyed. There is no army to oppose them.

106 This is predictable and a result of the failed govt shutdown last time. Obama called the Repubs bluff last time. So now the Repubs can no longer bluff. The only tiny bit of leverage the Repubs had is now gone. That is a major long term consequence of the failed shutdown gambit. That threat will slowly rebuild. The threat is basically the threat of chaos and the unpredictable nature of what might happen. In another decade that threat will rebuild enough to be strong enough to bluff with. But not now and not for the rest of Obama's term.

117 "Thomas Sowell: Will Republicans cave on immigration?" Ohh me me me me flapping raised hand wildly http://tinyurl.com/ptpvxl9 Listening to discussions of immigration laws and proposals to reform them is like listening to something out of "Alice in Wonderland." Immigration laws are the only laws that are discussed in terms of how to help people who break them. One of the big problems that those who are pushing "comprehensive immigration reform" want solved is how to help people who came here illegally and are now "living in the shadows" as a result. What about embezzlers or burglars who are "living in the shadows" in fear that someone will discover their crimes? Why not "reform" the laws against embezzlement or burglary, so that such people can also come out of the shadows? Almost everyone seems to think that we need to solve the problem of the children of illegal immigrants, because these children are here "through no fault of their own." Do people who say that have any idea how many millions of children are living in dire poverty in India, Africa or other places "through no fault of their own," and would be better off living in the United States? Do all children have some inherent right to live in America if they have done nothing wrong? If not, then why should the children of illegal immigrants have such a right? More fundamentally, why do the American people not have a right to the protection that immigration laws provide people in other countries around the world — including Mexico, where illegal immigrants from other countries get no such special treatment as Mexico and its American supporters are demanding for illegal immigrants in the United States? Because they fight back when the government is in the wrong. Here we can't even get an opposition party.

124 "That's an odd pitch from the man who wants to be Majority Leader but there it is."

Mitch is all about The Money, and what The Money happen to want right now is a shit-ton of cheap new labor to further undercut domestic wages.

On the one hand, it would be really great to permanently see the back of Mitch and his porkocratic ways. He is not a personally compelling candidate with voters, and despite his longstanding ties to The Money and deep wells of cash, he has won all his races by very small margins. It's not at all out of the question that Alison Grimes could remove him this year.

But, there is also simultaneously developing a situation where whether or not Harry Reid continues to be Majority Leader may well come down to literally just one single seat. If Grimes is in that seat instead of McConnell, it's more misery under Dingy Harry.

This is one of these situations where I feel like an evil computer in a classic _Star Trek_ episode, going bonkers and emitting smoke from having to digest an unresolvable contradiction. Error! Error! Does not compute! Which unacceptable option is superior?

I really hope that Bevin can pull together a credible primary challenge, and if I lived in that state I'd be backing him hugely, but the hour is very late, and The Money is a powerful and insidious opponent for anyone to take on as a small outsider.

They would theoretically have a better profit margin with reduced production costs, and that's great for them, but if we're all living on reduced wages, how the hell do we afford increased taxes, O-care, and then then buy their crap? We're a consumer based economy - our disposable income fuels the economy. Government and big business are colluding to wring every dime they can out of the taxpayer. The way i see it is the Republicans do not want another shutdown.  A shutdown will only be spun to make them look bad.  The Democrats would love another shutdown - anything to divert attention away from the continuing explosion that is ObamaCare.

If the above is correct I can see the Republicans not tying a big thing to the debt ceiling hike, keep it small so that it is more difficult for the Democrats to initiate a shutdown and blame it on the Republicans.  Lord knows the Democrats have been flailing away at Chris Christie to distract from ObamaCare so I do not think this is completely improbable thinking on my part.

A command economy is good for Big Government and Big Business. Government because it can "plan" everything, and Business because their profits are assured. At least- in theory. Of the bureaucrats at HM Treasury, he was quoted as saying he had come to view them with "increasing despair: they are brilliant people, hard-working and incorruptible, but in their economic judgments invariably wrong."

I dunno if it's incompetence so much as it's collusion to control all avenues of power. In the West, if you can get rich, you can be powerful. If you can't get rich, well, oops, I guess the powerful don't have to worry anymore about someone taking their power away.

I've often thought that there was too much a coincidence between Europe rising up against the elites in 1848, and Marx's manifesto coming out the same year. Communism is just Plan B for the elite to prevent the middle class from threatening their power.

Actually, if McConnell manages to win the primary, it would be better for the nation if KY then votes for Grimes. McConnell as "leader" is poison to this nation. He must be ousted even if it means having to vote Dem in the general. And since he can only muster a tie with Grimes and his approval rating is in the toilet, that just might happen. Praying Bevin ousts him tho and goes on to win in November.
