— Open Blogger Hello my pretties. ItÂ’s a beautiful Winter night in NE Florida. The air has just a slight chill, and IÂ’m lounging about in my pajamas (as all good bloggers are known to do), sipping on a glass of screw top wine. AndÂ… IÂ’m bored and IÂ’m feeling bossy. That means you will suffer through this ONT and like it because IÂ’m behind the wheel of this ship for the moment and the power is surging through my veins. I am invincible! Bwaaahahahahaha!
Anita Hill has reared her head yet again. Last night she appeared on The Daily Show where she essentially claimed to have single-handedly made sexual harassment a bad thing as if, silly as it sounds, we all thought it was a good thing before she showed up on the scene. Anyway, she is now the subject of a documentary, 'Anita'.
ANITA tells the story about a young, brilliant African American Anita Hill who accuses the Supreme Court nominee Clarence Thomas of unwanted sexual advances during explosive Senate Hearings in 1991 and ignites a political firestorm about sexual harassment, race, power and politics that resonates 20 years later today. ANITA is a dramatic look at the consequences to a private citizen acting out of a civic duty to 'speak truth to power.' For the first time on film Anita Hill speaks about her experience in the Senate Hearings, her impact on issues of sexual harassment, workplace rights for women and men, social justice and equality. The film is about the empowerment of girls and women, and men, through the extraordinary story of Anita Hill.

It will be released March 21.
Last night I added a link in the sidebar to one of Chuck Lorre’s more laughable vanity cards but I’m linking it here as well because, as I told you…. I am in charge. The archive contains more than 400 such vanity cards and if you search for something like oh, say, “Fox News”, you will find that Mr. Lorre is no fan (see #447) (h/t Weirddave). This, however, might be my favorite, and dates back to February 2009 when the world was on the brink of rapture:
CHUCK LORRE PRODUCTIONS, #239 TO DO LIST
Live to see a highly educated, deeply thoughtful, articulate, cool, biracial President who is not overly crippled by childhood wounds and capable, in no particular order, of freeing the nation of its oil dependence, restoring its international standing, creating universal health care, resurrecting the economy, ending two wars, rebuilding the public education system, finally bringing about an end to the mindlessness of racism, encouraging science and technology, firmly addressing environmental issues and global warming, and uniting the nation - and the world - in a giant cultural, tipping point leap forward.
Meet super-intelligent aliens who disarm the entire planet, cure every disease and take us all for rides across the galaxy.
Play a round of par golf.
Trade solos with Eric Clapton.
Win an Emmy.
Get married, stay married.
One down, five to go.
How's that working out for ya. Chuck?
After tweeting the above link, one of the Morons Morons dropped this preposterous little piece in my lap. It dates all the way back to June 2008 and it so cringe-worthy that I couldnÂ’t even click on page two. This might be known to some of you, but it was new to me and I am in awe.
Behold, the most absurd piece of journalism youÂ’ll read all day:
I find I'm having this discussion, this weird little debate, more and more, with colleagues, with readers, with liberals and moderates and miserable, deeply depressed Republicans and spiritually amped persons of all shapes and stripes and I'm having it in particular with those who seem confused, angry, unsure, thoroughly nonplussed, as they all ask me the same thing: What the hell's the big deal about Obama?I, of course, have an answer. Sort of.
Warning: If you are a rigid pragmatist/literalist, itchingly evangelical, a scowler, a doubter, a burned-out former '60s radical with no hope left, or are otherwise unable or unwilling to parse alternative New Age speak, click away right now, because you ain't gonna like this one little bit.
Ready? It goes likes this:
Barack Obama isn't really one of us. Not in the normal way, anyway.
You really have to read it to grasp what it is that we were truly up against in 2008. Simply delusional.
In the little bastards department, comes this story out of Utah: Boy calls 911 After Mom Says No to Oreos
HONEYVILLE, UT (KSTU) - A 7-year-old boy is gaining attention after placing a misleading 911 call.Officers in Honeyville, Utah, said the young boy called 911 claiming that his mom had thrown a knife at him. When deputies responded to the home, they found out his story wasn't exactly true.
The 7-year-old eventually came clean to officers, telling them he lied to the 911 dispatcher because his mom wouldn't give him more Oreo cookies.
Officers said they had a long talk with the boy about what 911 is for, and that frivolous use of 911 can result in criminal charges.
Officials said the boy is too young to be arrested

Would it be too harsh to make the little poop eat Oreos until he puked?
HereÂ’s a small break from your suffering. IÂ’m bossy, not cruel.
What follows is one of the most amazing nature videos IÂ’ve ever seen. In it, a dolphin swims to divers and, essentially, asks for help. Just incredible.
When I said that you will suffer through this ONT, I meant it. Hence, the worldÂ’s worst family photo:

Quiznos has filed for bankruptcy protection. It seems to me that the market is pretty well saturated with sub shops and new companies are popping up on a regular basis. They never stood out from the pack: Their food wasn’t a standout. Their pricing wasn’t a standout. And, as a marketeer, I feel quite comfortable in pointing out that when George M. Cohan said "I don't care what you say about me, as long as you say something about me, and as long as you spell my name right.” he most certainly didn’t have this little bit of marketing genius in mind:
It doesn’t matter that you call them “Spongemonkeys”, they look like rats. And they are singing about how much they like your subs. BTW, when you go to You Tube and type in “Quiznos” you’re given a couple of options, one of which is “Rat Commercial”.
That ainÂ’t good.
Although football season is over, things are aÂ’movinÂ’ and aÂ’shakinÂ’ in the league. Eric Decker goes to the Jets. Steve Smith has reached a deal with the Ravens. Darren Sproles signed with Philly. Follow the latest on twitter at NFL on ESPN ESPN and NFL.

And, speaking of football, CDR M sends along this little delight. Run, doggeh, run!

Tonight's ONT brought to you by that other great air mystery:

Quiznos has had a history of making stupid commercials.
And that one above? ...I read where those were supposed to be 'Singing Chicken Breasts'.
It wasn't until later that they decided to call them "sponge monkeys".
The worst Quiznos commercials...were those "Put One In You" commercials, with the long 12-inch subs.
Remember those?
With the talking oven?
If you never saw any of those...consider yourself fortunate.

I think they existed before Quizno's adopted them, on a site called rathergood.com, or something close to that, and I think they were likewise called "Spongmonkeys" (no e) before they were ever in an ad. IIRC there was also a character from the site called "Mr. Stabby", who visited a public swimming pool, with unfortunate results.

You're a parent in a two-parent household. Not only do you come up with this brilliant idea, you actually manage to sell it to the other parent who agrees it's a genius idea. But, in every subsequent season, they have added new kinds of creatures. Minotaurs, werewolves, werecats, shapeshifters, fairies, etc. It just became harder and harder to accept the premise: that this whole time these creatures have coexisted secretly with humans. When it was just vampires, ok, suspend disbelief and go along for the ride. But with every new creature they introduce, it gets further away from reality and deeper into a cartoon fantasy. They might as well bring on the super heroes.

I thought that HBO mini series 'From The Earth To The Moon' was really great.
It was back in the 90's.
The first season of 'Rome' was rather good.
Excellent set details and wardrobe....they spent a lot going in because it was supposed to be a 5 yr series.
But it got cancelled for being so expensive, and they crammed too much in the 2nd final season.
Shame too...it woulda been a great long term series.

Yes, that whole vampirism as an allegory for homosexuality was always there, but it wasn't so in your face in the first season as it was in the later seasons. I think that is part of why they kept adding new kinds of creatures: to make sure everyone knew they were supposed embrace the whole range of weirdos.
They did raise the issue of how, yes the vampires are now (supposedly) drinking the synthetic blood, but obviously, they were all hunting and killing people before they came out.

Finding Amelia by Ric Gillespie (2006)
He thinks she crash landed on Gardner's Island and survived for a period of time. Apparently the British recovered human remains in 1940 that were subsequently lost.
You are ignoring that they also found A woman's shoe, an empty bottle and a sextant box whose serial numbers are consistent with a type known to have been carried by Noonan were all found near the site where the bones were discovered. They were also human remains of a female of european origin at a height of Earhart.
So yeah that's almost certainly what happened to her and her copilot.

It illustrates the tightrope Hillary would have to walk though. If this is fair game, a lot of inconvenient stuff on her side is fair game. She's have to simultaneously say the stuff that pertains to her is irrelevant, as is Benghazi, because what does that matter anymore anyway, yet things beyond that are still relevant.

Too bad about Quiznos. They were expensive but the subs were tasty, plus every location I ever visited had a huge squeeze bottle of horseradish on hand. Sweet, delicious horseradish. ;-)
They also seemed to specialize in entrees made with quality cuts of steak and prime rib, which was also a nice touch. However it was probably one of the things that made them inadvertently unpopular with the sub sandwich crowd-- not too many folks are willing to spend $15 on lunch very often.

I've been facinated by the Ric Gillespie group (TIGHAR) efforts to prove their hypothesis of what happened to Amelia and Fred. I visit their website every couple of weeks to see the latest updates.
They have so far been unsuccessful in tying any of those artifacts mentioned upthread to either Fred or Amelia. "Consistent with" is as close as they can come
Their biggest hope now is another expedition this August, this time a month-long, to search for plane debris on the sea mount. If ya got a half mil to blow, you can buy a seat in the submersible to search for and possibly be the first one to conclusively spot her plane or pieces therof.

I never bought that story about Rome having to end because the set was so expensive. Even if it is true that it was one of the most expensive sets ever, once it was built, the money would have already been sunk. Since you already paid to build that whole thing, that is an argument to get as much out of it as you can, not to just throw it all away.
Deadwood lasted 3 seasons and then left us dangling after that.

Known point of gleeful propaganda by Protestants.
There most certainly can be homosexual pedophiles.
Interestingly, they try to claim that pedophiles are heterosexuals even if they do it with young boys.
It's been toned down of late as they finally got the message that it was hurting them but NAMBLA was always a part of the SF Gay Pride parade's and other cities also.
It's all really part of a "were all marginalized by our sexual preference so let's band together against the straights/breeders" kind of attitude.

There is a version of A Feast for Crows / A Dance With Dragons on the torrent sites, where someone has gone to the trouble of patching the two books back together into one book, with the timeline reintegrated. I plan on rereading the whole series, so this time I will try reading that combination instead when I get to that point. The first time I read Feast for Crows, I didn't read it very carefully as I was so anxious to get back to the story lines that were left hanging at the end of A Storm of Swords.

I am prepared to believe that the family are nudists, or "naturists", or whatever, and that the photograph is not overtly sexual. But if they have those beliefs, and practice nudism/naturism, they should also practice sufficient discretion NOT to have photos made which could be taken the wrong way.
It's kind of like posing for a photo, with a gun in your hand, finger on the trigger. Maybe you made absolutely certain that there was no mag in the gun, and no round in the chamber, but people looking at the photo can't know that, and will assume the worst.

There was a Roger Zelazny story (or it may have been the sequel by Walter Jon Williams) The Graveyard Heart, in which a group of very wealthy people spend most of their time in suspended animation, waking only to attend major parties, sometimes only one night out of a year. They become more and more disconnected from the society they left behind. At one juncture a character murders another. The murdered man is resurrected by the far future technology but his murderer must still be punished. So the killer is executed and then also resurrected.

Why? Because this airhead took years between some of these books and left his readers (me in particular) hanging. Twisting slowly in the wind while he went off on other projects that were less well received.
For some reason he didn't feel the need or have the inspiration to continue the series. (like about 5 years between episodes at one point?)
So he lost me and I will never ever forgive or read his stuff again.

The whole "taking years to complete each 1000-page volume" thing pisses me off. With e-readers and amazon.com there's no reason why a writer couldn't break their story up into easily publishable sections and release it one short story at a time. I'd happily pay $1.99 per story for ten stories rather than $9.99 for a book every five years.

Most people who are nudists practice it BECAUSE they dislike the attitudes of the majority of the people and the nudity taboo.
They would feel that any ick feeling by any viewers of the pic are on those feeling icky and not on them.
They would actually be pleased to make them cringe.
That's part and parcel of nudism.

Presumably the 777 is equipped with GPS, which is now sufficiently accurate to tell me which ramp I'm on in a parking lot. You could undoubtedly land an airliner by GPS, if you were obliged to. And GPS is passive; so it does not necessarily have to send a signal to the world to announce where you are.

I keep thinking that GRRM's tediousness is the later Game books is because he's so pompously proud of having created a world, and feels the need to explore every inch of it. I mean, for goodness sakes, Dorne and the gorram Martels are FUCKING BORING, POINTLESS AND HAVE NO REAL IMPACT ON THE GREATER STORY LINE AT ALL. And he wasted what, 500 pages on them????? With the notable exception of Theon, the Grayjoys HAVE NO REAL IMPACT ON THE GREATER STORY LINE AT ALL.
Half the families in Westeros are fucking irrelevant to the story. That doesn't make for compelling fiction. Fact is, he needed an editor with balls to tell him "no".
Bet ya the next book has at least 300 pages dedicated to the Summer Isles, which has only been mentioned in passing.

This is the question. It strongly suggests state sponsorship of whatever is going on. Sure, a bunch of terroists taking over a plane and then crashing it or holding the passengers as hostages until their demands are met isn't that complicated. But, if that isn't it, then what is it? A crash seems less and less likely as time goes on and no debris showing up anywhere.
So, that means it landed somewhere. And that means some government letting it happen. There is no way a plane that size can land on some dirt runway hidden in a cornfield, for example. And, how many governments are willing to take on China? If it turns out that Iran, for example, disappeared all those Chinese citizens so they could get a plane for some future terrorist attack, China will not just sit still. For that matter, other than the Uyghurs, what group, governmental or not, is going to want to publicly shame the Chinese government in this way? It would be considered an act of war. If the plane was just crashed somewhere, even if it was a bunch of Iranian nationals behind it, the government of Iran could just claim that they were not acting under governmental authority. But, whoever let that plane land and has since been concealing it will not be able to get away with that fiction.
It also makes me wonder if the reason this info is dribbling and drabbling out, getting retracted, modified, and expanded, is all a smoke screen. Maybe the US knows more than it is letting on, and is watching to see who does what in the vicinity of where the plane is.

Yep, back in the day he was just another SF writer whose stuff I'd only read if bored and lacking any alternatives. The first thing I can recall seeing by him was in a 'Year's Best SF' probably for 1973 or 1974. (Unrelated to the similarly named anthology series that came later.) It was a story called 'The Storms of Windhaven.' Now, I was only about ten years old at the time but it bored the hell out of me, while most of the other stories in the book were pretty good. Especially one about a robot astronaut that find itself in a parallel universe orbiting a world similar to the Earth it left but far more primitive and vulnerable to a coming alien invasion. (The world he has found himself stuck in is apparently ours.) He convinces the Ground Control crew at Houston that he is the first wave of an alien invasion and purposely crashes so as to leave as much technology intact as possible in hopes humanity will be ready when the real invaders show up.
I remember the title of the story being Hellbent-4 but I cannot find any reference for that title. Anyway, Martin never did much for me. The only thing associated with him that I've liked is the Wild Cards series, which is mainly written by other people with him serving as editor.

Basically an alien race that is human with certain super talents decide to use Earth as a test bed for a virus that is supposed to increase the number with such powers. Things do not go as planned.
Some humans gain super powers, they are called Aces. While others suffer physical deformities and they become Jokers. It all happens just after WWII in New York City. Where the Jokers are ostracized is called Jokertown. While Aces get the press and some become honest to goodness super powered crime fighters.

Yeah, I really don't like the climb to above 40,000 feet. People have climbed Everest, which is 29,000 feet, without additional oxygen -- so there is a reason to suppose that you could depressurize the plane at 32,000 feet and have survivors.
But when you go from 30,000 feet to 45,000 feet, you go from 4.36 psi to 2.1 psi (sea level is 14.7)....

We don't know how much fuel was used on the ground and ascent before loss of contact. Did the pilots open the throttles a bit for a quicker ascent? Did the plane depart on time? Do not know what winds were in the area. So to try and figure out would be a very large WAG.

Due to travels and a history of having "friends" fuck me over, I don't socialize much. Found it was more trouble than it's worth.
And don't the cell phones change automatically?

I get that that's what you meant now.
But see, I don't use it much and therefore don't see the time.
I've thought about carrying it with me but I don't travel as much as I used to these days and if something breaks down I'm in a suburban area with plenty of stores and houses and what not so I'd be able to find a phone if I needed one.
Bad weather is about the only time I might be at risk but I don't go further than about 8 blocks at the most (Walmart), 5 blocks to Grocery store or 2 blocks to convenience store.
Even I can walk that far. Even in bad weather.

I still have dreams about a place I worked 1989-1997....I ended up running ops, manufacturing semicustom telecom gear. One time, I was on vacation in Puerto Rico, at a nice steakhouse with the BH, and I went to wash my hands....and ended up 40 minutes later getting yanked off the pay-phone after having revamped the production schedule to avoid being "line-down". Looked at from different sides, it was either the perfect job for an OCD data-driven CPA, or it was a nightmare job for an OCD data-driven CPA.

About that last.....
I have SEVERE obstructive sleep apnea -- OSA. And when I say "SEVERE", I mean that I have the highest CPAP pressure ever prescribed by my sleep specialist -- who is one of the top guys in the field.
And one of the freakier results of CPAP (Actually BiPAP, because the pressure's so high) was that I slept through the night without getting up several times to take a leak. How a pressure-mask on the face eliminated constant rousing to tinkle is not exactly obvious.....but it was a striking change.
Anyway, for anyone whose dress shirt has more than a 16-inch neck size....and who is known to snore.....get yourself evaluated for OSA. Seriously.

Something like 60% of NFL linebackers have OSA -- it's really correlated with neck size, and I'm surprised that dress-shirt manufacturers haven't picked-up on it and put out PSAs. And that shit's dangerous -- I got to the point where I'd "come-to-myself" at work without any clue as to how I'd gotten there.

Don't think you can go in and ask for all sorts of preventative tests that you couldn't afford before.
Oh, you can get them but YOU'LL pay for the whole thing.
You have to have legitimate symptoms that lead the DOCTOR to decide you need the test.
I've run into this a couple times now with Medicare. I know that I have a possible problem but because there's no symptoms or signs of disease, I would have to pay for the entire test and the Dr's referral.
On a low fixed income, this just isn't going to happen. So I await the symptoms that will allow them to test to see if what's going on is life threatening or not.
Wheeeeee. Getting old isn't for sissies even if you are one like me.

You don't know the half of it.
If you have OSA, you'll need a CPAP -- which is a very simple medical device. It used to be that you could buy one for $1000, but all the medical providers leased 'em for $100/month for 24 months, then gave 'em to you at the end of the lease (and had you available for a new one). For various reasons, a lot of people don't use 'em regularly -- so they'd ditch 'em on ebay for around $300.....until that got shot down by regulators. Now, you can't buy used or off-lease ones at all, and the new ones are $1500.
This is flat-out, stick-a-gun-in-your-nose extortion. You are banned from actual ownership -- the type where you can resell later -- in favor of a system of perpetual payments. It's not like missing a day of CPAP will kill you -- I can't speak for anyone else, but I have a nasty headache and I'm cranky the next day when my BiPAP fails [power failure] or I don't use it properly.

Late entry in the MH 370 speculation, and a bit tin-foil, but consider: no single terrorist entity has taken credit for the incident. That's not completely unprecedented, but certainly close to it. For those who might suggest that some terrorist organization has stepped forward and it simply hasn't been made public - again, possible, but dependent on a complete embargo adhered to by every major news outlet globally in this 24/7 media cycle. Even with pressure from powerful states, that's not a reasonable expectation.
So, maybe a lone-wolf (or wolves) operation? There was at least one Uighur passenger, and everyone knows about the Iranians and the dodgy passports. Nothing jumps out about the pilot or co-pilot, beyond the junior officer's inviting hotties onto the flight deck, but there could be something hinky with either or both, or some other member(s) of the crew. A suicidal pilot isn't unprecedented either. If it wasn't a garden variety aviation disaster, both the lone-wolf and the suicide scenario could fit nicely with the little evidence available to us in the public arena.
But if it was a hijacking (even if the plan went awry), apart from merely seeking to crash the aircraft, what could be the purpose? To stow it away (and perhaps re-fit the 777) for a future kamikaze run? Possible, but far easier to accomplish by other less risky and more certain means. Moreover, choosing such a method runs the risk for a State or a terrorist group of tipping their hat to potential targets and allowing them to make contingency plans. If it occurred to most of us as a possibility soon after the problematic nature of MH 307's disappearance became known, it almost certainly occurred to everyone from SIS to Mossad as well, and that doesn't exactly help the perpetrators. Unless the intent was simply to create the fear of such a kamikaze attack, but that's a bit convoluted and dependent on too many elements coming together just right for it to be workable, and once more, easier to accomplish by other, less spectacular means.
So, why take the craft? If not for a crash or a potential sinister use in the futre, it could only be that the perps wanted (1) the airliner, (2) the passengers, (3) the cargo, or (4) all of the above. If it's option (3), apart from simple theft, the only other possibilities would be (a) some use to which the cargo could be employed, and it's unlikely that a Third World airliner would be carrying something of that alarming a nature; or (b) extortion. And 3-b could apply to options 1, 2, and 4 as well. This would also account for why there's been no claim of responsibility - if the purpose was ransom, then the other parties to the plot would have no motive to say anything at all if the 777 crashed, and if, against the odds, the plan succeeded, the only recipients of the ransom demand would be those most directly affected. Families of individual passengers wouldn't be likely to be approached - but their respective governments, especially that of the largest contingent of passengers, China, would be very attractive to a group of extortionists this blatant. Once one allows for this possibility, it explains the news vacuum. Only the targeted States and the intelligence and defense establishments of other nations would be in the know, and could, for their own purposes, keep it out of the media loop for a considerable time.
Again, tin-foil hat stuff, I know. Ockham's Razor suggests that MH 370 was the victim of a crash, whether accidental or deliberate. But if not, the lack of many of the known hallmarks of terrorism and the clumsiness of any sort of stow-it-for-future use plot does point more to old-fashioned extortion and kidnapping and/or theft as a bit more plausible an explanation, even if the perpetrators ended up failing in their attempt.

Maybe Fat Teddy was in on the deal but as I recollect it was Nina Totenberg from NPR who dragged Anita (she supposedly didn't want to testify) into the hearings.

I would go one further and make the Muzzie political party an unamerican party dangerous to the US much like the Communist party and the Abraham Lincoln Brigade in the past.

You have got to hand it to the liberal bastards, they NEVER quit trying to destroy America. There is ALWAYS a team of prog a-holes on duty, trying to figure out the next tactical moves on dismantling Western Civilization.

We ended up in St. Croix. It was fantastic! Thank you to those who helped me out.
By the way, don't forget that you can fly to the US Virgin Islands without a passport. That was one of our limiting factors.

When my Uncle died (long time ago) I went home and stayed with my Gramma (who was living with my uncle at the time when he died) to help out.
Uncle's daughter and freeloading husband had already taken up residence (my uncle made it a condition of his will that gramma got to stay in the house no matter what. Everything else was the daughter's)
They also brought their 5 yo brat son.
1. found out they had thousands in cashiers checks but were living off gramma's food paid for by her.
2. they did nothing around the property.
3. the kid tried to push gramma down the front steps (no punishment)
and was generally a pia.
I on the other hand helped out, paid for my food (I got a job in town) and tried to help gramma as much as possible with other stuff.
Now guess who got told they had to leave because they were being a burden.

Vs. Paula Jones/ Juanita Broaddrick/ Monica Lewinsky etc.
The former has quite the different public profile, cuts quite a different figure in the public/ media imagination. Wonder why. (And compare the gravity of the respective charges/ alleged situations.)
Gee, wonder if that "empowering" documentary about "speaking truth to power" re sexual harassment (not to mention worse things) will make any mention at all, even just in passing, of Bill Clinton.
Yeah, sure.
