Overnight Open Thread (4-6-2014)
— Maetenloch

Well today life maintenance intervened and all of my small engine-based devices decided to stop running. So a whole lot of carburetor-related activity ensued. ONT-related work not so much.

We Don't Have a "Gay Mafia," We Have a "Gay Soviet"

We already know that organized ideological thuggery took Eich down, but I'd like to focus on the mentality that drove the anti-heretic hunt.  CNET, which covers the tech world, has apost about the Eich resignation.  What struck me about the CNET article was a comment from the man who started it all - a man who said that, if only Eich had announced that the re-education had been successful and then kept his mouth shut, then everything would have been okay (emphasis mine):
"We never expected this to get as big as it has, and we never expected that Brendan wouldn't make a simple statement. I met with Brendan and asked him to just apologize for the discrimination under the law that we faced. He can still keep his personal beliefs, but I wanted him to recognize that we faced real issues with immigration and say that he never intended to cause people problems," Catlin said in a blog post Thursday. "It's heartbreaking to us that he was unwilling to say even that."
Once, we were a country that used its government to advance the notion that "that every person is entitled to a private life and deserves respect as a human being, irrespective of the extent of his political loyalty or contribution to the state."  Now, we're a Soviet nation, in which private citizens are told that they must publicly recant their heresies or be destroyed.

So, while Maher's on the right track, he picked the wrong organization.  Yes, there's thuggery involved, which is a mafia tactic.  But unlike the mafia, which was just in it for the money, the new Soviet is in it to subordinate the individual and his beliefs entirely to the will of the Leftist state.

It's not business - it's personal. Because now the personal is political.

Quote of the Day

When I first had the idea and was writing [Idiocracy], I was at Disneyland. My daughters were young and I was at the teacups ride with them. And this woman had had an altercation with another woman before, I guess, and they were right behind me. And this other woman passes by and they just started [going after each other] . and they're just cussing in front of their kids. And I'm there with my daughters thinking, 'I don't think this is how Walt Disney imagined it'

The New York Times' 3 Worst Corrections On Christian Holidays

What they don't know could fill a testament - or two.

An earlier version of this article mischaracterized the Christian holiday of Easter. It is the celebration of Jesus's resurrection from the dead, not his resurrection into heaven.

--The New York Times, April 1, 2013
An earlier version of this article misquoted a comment from Malachy McCourt on St. Patrick. Mr. McCourt said, "My attitude is, St. Patrick banished the snakes from Ireland and they all came here and they became conservatives." He did not say St. Patrick banished the slaves from Ireland.

The Helicopter Carriers of Cherbourg

In the 1960s, Israel ordered a number of new missile boats from France. In 1968, Israel raided the Beirut airport, where it destroyed some empty planes on the ground, in response to an attack by the Lebanese-based PLO on an El Al flight. France reacted by imposing an arms embargo on Israel (Paris had increasingly abandoned Jerusalem in favor of the Arab world since the Algeria withdrawal, and even more so since the Six-Day War). But Israel had already paid for the boats-and in an extraordinary repo operation, spirited them out of Cherbourg harbor under French noses, and sailed them successfully all the way to Israel.

50 The gay mafia reminds me of the Red Guard, ok Pink Guard, and Mao's Great Cultural Revolution. All that's missing are enemies of the state being paraded through the streets wearing dunce caps and re-education camps. The Great Cultural Revolution destroyed China as the best and the brightest were hounded and persecuted for non- existent crimes. Sadly that seems to be the goal here.

The really dumb thing on my part is that I did buy some Sta-Bil last fall but just forgot to add it to the gas. Doh!

But during my childhood and even just a few years ago I don't recall having this many problems with small engines and leaving gas in them. Now if it's idle more than a month, there's a 50/50 chance it won't start. The culprit seems to be the year-round use of ethanol in gasoline.

In the 70s and 80s all the small engine stuff at our cabin never had problems. Now if you open the bowl there is corrosion in it and on the needle jet from the absorbed humidity. I am pretty sure it is due to the hygroscopic nature of the ethanol.  useful attribute when used as an additive to bind condensate in fuel systems (the Heet we used in the winter before it was in all gas). but plays hell on stored equipment.

I often thought how amazing it was to be able to have all types of food just brought to your door in hard dishes and when you were done, you'd just leave the dishes outside the door and the delivery driver would pick it up.

Imagine the hassles of starting such a wonderfully simple idea in your area: the regulations; concerns about motorcycle parking and safety; crazy insurance rates. All of the bureaucratic bullshit that would make a free service suddenly cost-prohibitive. Still pisses me off.

And there's no tipping in South Korea. I was a blackjack dealer for a while, much of my income was made up of tips and I tip well. But I got used to that real fast.

163 "Person of Color" is a racist term designed to demean, diminish, and Otherize white people. There's no such thing as "People of Color". First, everybody has a skin tone. Literally everybody has a color. Nobody is transparent. Second, the term "Person of Color" implies there is some real biological difference between "white people" and all non-whites. This is scientific bullshit. On a genetic relatedness measure, people of asian descent are closer related to people of european descent than they are to people of sub-Saharan african descent. And hispancis, of course, are european descended to begin with. White people really should push back against racist terms like "Person of Color". It was a racist term invented by white-hating afrocentric racists. The purpose of the term was to define white as a negative, by something they lacked. You lack color when you are ill, sick, and weak. And those connotations are what the anti-white racists want you to think about being "white". That's it's something to be ashamed of, to be embarassed about. As opposed to just being the skin tone you happened to be born with.

Just go with whatcha know. *** I've always been a get my hands dirty and find my way through it kind of gal/employee without training in proper methods. I suppose after not working for two years, my confidence is a bit lacking. Thanks for the kind vote of confidence.

189 Posted by: Niedermeyer's Dead Horse at April 06, 2014 11:13 PM (DmNpO) Does anyone here have their project management certification? If so, was the coursework beneficial IRL? I have the CAPM certification. If you do not save time cards, then PMP is tough to qualify for, because there is a chance that you will be audited, for relevant and sufficient work experience, before they let you take the test. There is a test. CAPM (also from PMI) is not as stringent on proving relevant work experience. It is also geared more towards the nuts and bolts of PMI (based on the results of a friend who took both tests). It, too, has a test. There is some value in both, aside from simply having the credential. They both describe a methodology which, at the very least, can provide some rational structure in badly-organized companies, and provide some useful "push-back", when some way to "push-back" is needed ("sorry, your brand-new requirements are actually requested changes, and must go to change control"). Cost Performance Index and Schedule Performance Index are useful for tracking schedule (whether they're right or not). They provide a means to raise flags to management when you fear schedule slip, without really alarming too many people (just do it right). Read up on Scrum ( have that certification too), and Agile. Scrum insists on "Time Boxes" (e.g., define a meeting to have a 30-minute timebox, therefore, it will not run 31 minutes or longer). It forces people to prepare and be brief ... and avoids continuing discussions and impromptu technical joy-rides. This is a tool, to be used or misused ... Scrum also likes burn-down charts; they're useful. Agile ... in certain cases it works (usually software, where things are nebulous or change a lot). In certain other cases (building a physical item), it causes catastrophic failure (hardware has ONE prototype, not 5). You will have to learn which.

No, it's Naptha or more commonly known as white gas. It's a highly refined and high octane gas that used to be completely odorless so you could burn it lanterns and stoves and not have to smell it.

As for ethanol free fuel,  here in Wisconsin they lightened up on restrictions so just about every gas station has it now. Five years ago one or two places in a mid size town would have it for lawn mowers and tractors, now it's everywhere. Nice.

278 For Aslan's Girl, from yesterday:

I just downloaded the Pale Moon browser too based on the early morning comments above; from the death penalty open thread...

Here's the web page...
http://www.palemoon.org/

I had no problem using the automatic install button through Firefox although I can't recall now if it "ran" automatically or if I had to click the .exe file separately (even though I just did it 10 minutes ago!) to get it to fully install, but nothing more than that.

It showed check-boxes to import items from Internet Explorer that I checked; and when it fully loaded and I first accessed the desktop icon, the Pale Moon homepage that appeared had a link to an app by a secondary source to import my full Firefox bookmarks, passwords etc.

So I downloaded it and followed the instructions to close both the Firefox and Pale Moon browsers before running the app; then ran the app from my Downloads file by the usual double-clicking the .exe file icon and it ran just fine including a popup question to answer about the importing. Then when the app had run completely, I opened the Pale Moon browser and it had indeed copied all of my bookmarks etc. over without a hitch (as far as I can tell so far)---and I have a ton of them.

I even did a quick check to see if all of my sockpuppets were stored in the HQ "Name:*" field and it looks like they're all there too.

Addendum: and I just accessed a couple of accounts that I registered at and my Hotmail account and they're all working fine too. Disqus is fine too.

He can still keep his personal beliefs, but I wanted him to recognize that we faced real issues with immigration and say that he never intended to cause people problems Immigration? Say what? That's not on the usual list of the pro-gay-marriage supporters. There's "unfairness". There's "survivor's benefits". There's financial issues and all the benefits of marriage that were designed for people who get pregnant through ordinary sexual activity but that somehow people who don't have that handicap feel the need to get on on that action. But "immigration"? This is a big deal? Lots of gays finding their age-appropriate soul mates overseas, eh?

344 So now that the Left has seemingly won on pot and gays, what will be next. They can always scream about guns and abortion. And I guess after pot they'll move on to legalizing other drugs. Maybe shrooms. Lot of potheads seem to also be pro shroom cause natural. Or something stupid like like that. After gays the obvious next step is polygamy, which has already started. Plus they get to team with the muzzies on that one. Black muzzies, too. Lots of polygamy in black muslim countries -- where Obama has quietly, but sharply, increased immigration. Gays, guns, drugs, and babies. Those are basically the social issues being fought over, right?

Gay man from Norway (oh dear, may be Sweden) visits Cuba and finds his soul mate. Gets visa. They live together. Go thru immigration. Cuban becomes a citizen. Citizens have the right of family reunification. So the Cuban man divorces his husband and applies for a visa for his wife still in Cuba.

353 The funniest (darkly) part will be when the Gaystapo meets the Sharia law, coming soon to Country near you. Wonder how the Leftists will react then... Posted by: ManWithNoParty at April 07, 2014 12:45 AM (ojnk6) In Europe, it turns out that Muslim is more protected than "gay." The left believes that, in the words of de Tocqueville, that "Â…the function of the State was not merely one of the ruling the nation, but also that of recasting it in a given mold, of shaping the mentality of the population as a whole in accordance with a predetermined model and instilling the ideas and sentiments they though desirable in the minds of all." The gay rights people have been so successful, that they have become part of European civilization, because Western values were always the most tolerant. For this reason, they will be swept aside just like the older values they replaces because they were not sufficiently distinguished from them. In order to destroy Western Civilization, the Leftist elites need Muslims to supplant the natives, in a Brecht-like manner. This is why the most vocal anti-Islamists/anti-Immigrant parties in Europe are led by homosexuals. Despite the B.S. of noted child-molestation advocate Alfred Kinsey, 80% of all people are not bi-sexual (10% being straight or pure gay, respecitvly). Gays will always be a small percentage of the population. Pissing off the majority whose innate biology is at odds with homosexuality is not a wise move. The "Gay Mafia" has used the innate tolerance of the Western World, and the Anglo-sphere specifically, to guilt everyone else into not just tolerance, but into pro-active affirmation of not just homosexuality, but the fiction that biological sex does not matter whatsoever. Once they destroy that, they will soon find out that they but cut off their nose to spite their face, and face a civilization that won't be snookered by such B.S.

356 Nation of Islam teaches that all whites are devils, too. Several black sects teach vicious racism and never get called on it. Mormons get attacked cause they had some racist theology that they changed in the 70s. NoI and JayZ's church (JayZ who is personal friends with Obama and is tight with the NBA) openly preach that white people are literally demonic creatures. Malcolm X preached that most of his adult life as well. When Malcolm X referred to white people as the "white devil" he didn't mean a few or even some white people. Or just the racist whites that supported Jim Crow. He meant all white people. For all time. Because they were created that way.

Posted by: Jen at April 07, 2014 12:54 AM (IdGqX) My post to that Mozilla input page: I've used Mozilla as my secondary browser for years. I shall do so no more. The hypocrisy of stating that the company believes in diversity of thought and opinion, while driving out someone who has been fair and tolerant simply because he felt that a "union of a man and a woman" was integral to the definition of marriage, is sickening. Some may say that he was driven out for not just having a dissenting opinion on "marriage" but for donating to "deny civil rights" and thus discriminate. To those people I must then ask: Is it then acceptable to drive out anyone who favored treating people unequally on the basis of race? Opponents of Prop. 209, supporters of SCA 5, and those who donated to politicians and groups that supported Affirmative action, all have tried to deny the basic civil right of equality of treatment under the law. If it is acceptable to drive out people for politically pushing for "inequality," then is it not alright to do the same for Affirmative Action advocates? If fairness means anything beyond the vapid, then the answer is yes. In summary, I don't care what the creators of good software think. I've been tolerant of those who have supported inequality of Affirmative Action. But tolerance is a two way street. I shall no longer tolerate those who are intolerant of me. For now, at least, this is still a free country. I shall exercise the freedom by using someone else's product.

Trying out several options. Both Iron and Comodo Dragon seem to do everything I need, so far. There is occasionally a bit of funkiness with little slices of videos getting scrolled and stuck up in the Iron title bar for a little while, but that's something I can live with.

Opera doesn't seem to like some of the on-line design tools I use -- not sure why. I haven't really investigated yet -- and probably won't if one of the other options stays working well.

So, I'm not sad about six less Firefox installations in my little world. At least not yet.

But what I haven't found yet is a good alternative to Thunderbird. Any recommendations?

Posted by: pjf at April 06, 2014 09:33 PM (N/lcw)

388 The thing to remember in all this is that Firefox, for all intents and purposes, is a Google project. Google provides the lion's share of funding for Mozilla. Their stated reason is that Firefox makes Google the default search engine and home page for new installations. From Wikipedia:

The Mozilla Foundation is funded by donations and "search royalties". Since 2005, the vast majority of funds have come from Google Inc.

Initial funding in 2003 came from AOL, who donated US$2 million, and from Mitch Kapor who donated US$300,000. The group has tax-exempt status under section 501(c)(3) of the U.S. tax code, though the Mozilla Corporation subsidiary is taxable.

In 2006, the Mozilla Foundation received US$66.8 million in revenues, of which US$61.5 million is attributed to "search royalties" from Google.

The foundation has an ongoing deal with Google to make Google search the default in the Firefox browser search bar and hence send it search referrals; a Firefox themed Google search site has also been made the default home page of Firefox. The original contract expired in November 2006. However, Google renewed the contract until November 2008 and again through 2011. On 20 December 2011 Mozilla announced that the contract was once again renewed for at least three years to November 2014, at three times the amount previously paid, or nearly US$300 million annually. Approximately 85% of MozillaÂ’s revenue for 2006 was derived from this contract.

Google was in a pretty strong position if it wanted to apply any pressure regarding Eich's force out, in either direction. Therefore, I would not think that Chrome would be a good alternative to anyone who is trying to make a point.

On the other hand, Pale Moon uses DuckDuckGo as the default search engine. Pale Moon's developer is not, as far as I can tell, beholden to either Mozilla or Google. He took the open source Mozilla code, and has made minor changes to the interface (restoring the old status bar, changing the default layout of the buttons, etc) as well as optimizing the code to make it run faster.

403 The three main rendering engines are Mozilla's, Chrome's, and Microsoft's.

True. Therefore, I guess it depends on your approach. If your bottom line is the engine, then I suppose that anything but Mozilla would be the solution. If you are more focused on the people in the boardroom who made the decision, then I would guess you would want to move to a browser which is not under their control. That means to me, staying away from either the Google or Mozilla corporations. A company who uses the open source code, but is independent of those two corporations would accomplish my goals.

404 The question being, your Honor, is why one Mr. O'Spades feels the need to run a script on his web page that disables ampersands? What is Mr. O'Spades hiding and when did Mr. O'Spades start hiding it?

406 For those of you using lots o' add-ons and a changed style all snazzed up with extensions and thinking "I really don't want to screw with my browser now that it's all customized and working well", I'm right there with you. Hell, I still use Google 'cause I just prefer the results.

I put on my brave hat earlier today and dl'd Pale Moon. I've got:

My mad-slick dark user interface, modified by input from two different extensions, looks exactly the same. My RoboForm password manager works on the 5+ of the sites I've used so far. It took less than 5 minutes.

OK so far.   &&&

I still use Eudora.

It has been defunct for 8 years or so, but still works perfectly for me.

http://www.eudora.com/download/

There is also an open source version that was being handled by Mozilla, which I haven't tried.

Posted by: The Eudora Hat at April 07, 2014 01:43 AM

++++

I used Pegasus for awhile after Eudora started to push ads. It was very Eudora-like, so that might be a good alternative. I switched to MS Outlook because they were using it a work and I grew to like it, so I don't have any recent experience with Pegasus.

It looks like the software is still being supported:

412 349 So now that the Left has seemingly won on pot and gays, what will be next. They can always scream about guns and abortion.

And I guess after pot they'll move on to legalizing other drugs. Maybe shrooms. Lot of potheads seem to also be pro shroom cause natural. Or something stupid like like that.

The right should have fought cannabis legalization as hard as it fought alcohol legalization in the 1930s.

Do you have anything to say about intoxicants (besides alcohol and tobacco, which I'm guessing you heartily approve of) other than invective?  Not everyone who uses cannabis is a leftie, just like not every drunk is a rightie.

416 Holy carp. Check this out: A supposed manifesto from an organization called “The Counterforce” makes demands believed to be related to the protest. To this end, we now make our first clear demand of Google. We demand that Google give three billion dollars to an anarchist organization of our choosing. This money will then be used to create autonomous, anti-capitalist, and anti-racist communities throughout the Bay Area and Northern California. In these communities, whether in San Francisco or in the woods, no one will ever have to pay rent and housing will be free. With this three billion from Google, we will solve the housing crisis in the Bay Area and prove to the world that an anarchist world is not only possible but in fact irrepressible. If given the chance, most humans will pursue a course towards increased freedom and greater liberty. As it stands, only people like Kevin Rose are given the opportunity to reshape their world, and look at what they do with those opportunities. There is trouble in techie paradise, it seems. http://pjmedia.com/richardfernandez/2014/04/06/vanishing-point/

438 So the local McDonald s was doing the Free Coffee thing as late as 8:00 last night.

And we stopped to eat after a long day of PaintBall tournaments  with Little VIA.

Seems like every homeless person in a twenty mile radius was coming in at a steady pace to get coffee.

I mean, like every third person in the door had that Urban Outdoorsman look to them.
I guess the old saying is true.

439 "If you give away free stuff, you attract the people who like free stuff". I volunteer once in a while at a local food bank sponsered by our Church. I have seen people drive in a Lexus, Cadillacs, etc, etc, and once even a Jaguar. Free food. Attracts even those who are not needy. Go figure.

440 People who want to have mindless hook ups with as many partners as possible without fear of disease (I''m talking about literally hundreds) are not animals. Animals-as far as I know- have sex because they are in heat. It's a biological need to reproduce. There is no need for either gays or straights (Who was that basketball player who had hundreds of sex partners?) who engage in that lifestyle to reproduce. They are either mentally ill people who look at others merely as something to use-not a "person: at all t and hey are in the grip of the flesh-as opposed to the Spirit and under the control of the Father of lies. This is quite different than a regular person-either straight or gay who in the course of their lives has a number of romances and sexual partners and may want to have a very long term monogamous relationship and/or be married.

444 I wonder if it would be possible to make one of those horror movies like from "The Hills Have Eyes" type era.

A modern city suddenly sees a major decline in the number of homeless  within it's city limits.

And the Federal Government decides to recognize their efforts to reduce homelessness.

And their response to the question of how they reduced homelessness was,
"We didn't eliminate homelessness. We eliminated the homeless"

Shades of The Twilight Zone, and "To Serve Man".

What we need here is an Exorcist to cast this evil into the outer darkness where demons wail and gnash their teeth. And no, I don't think fat Christie, or Jeb Bush is the man to do it.
