Political Open Thread: A Tale of Two Commencement Speeches [Y-not]
— Open Blogger

So, the Thought Police won again. Former Secretary of State Condeeleza Rice will NOT be speaking at Rutgers after all:

Former U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice backed out of giving Rutgers University's commencement speech today amid growing opposition among the school's students and faculty.

In a statement, Rice said she informed Rutgers President Robert Barchi that she has decided not to give the May 18 address.

“Commencement should be a time of joyous celebration for the graduates and their families. Rutgers' invitation to me to speak has become a distraction for the university community at this very special time," Rice said.

Well done, Rutgers. Well done.

Seriously, this sort of thing really pisses me off. ESPECIALLY in Dr. Rice's case since she, unlike most politicians, is a bona fide scholar. Although I suspect her domestic politics may be too "centrist" (aka liberal) for my personal taste, I think she's a very impressive politician and individual. You have to be a real knuckle-dragger to object to the former Provost of Stanford University speaking at your commencement.

I'm offended more as a scholar than I am as a conservative by the disgusting behavior of those Rutgers faculty and students.

Meanwhile, across the country at Utah Valley University, this was the commencement speaker:

Wes Moore is a youth advocate, Army combat veteran, social entrepreneur, and host of Beyond Belief on the Oprah Winfrey Network. His first book The Other Wes Moore became an instant New York Times and Wall Street Journal bestseller.

Born in 1978, Wes and his sisters were raised by their widowed mother. Despite early academic and behavioral struggles, he graduated Phi Theta Kappa in 1998 as a commissioned officer from Valley Forge Military College, and Phi Beta Kappa from Johns Hopkins University in 2001, where he also played football and earned a bachelor’s degree in International Relations. He then became a Rhodes Scholar, studying International Relations at Oxford University.

After his studies, Wes, a paratrooper and Captain in the United States Army, served a combat tour of duty in Afghanistan with the 1st Brigade of the 82nd Airborne Division. Wes then served as a White House fellow to Secretary of State Condeleezza Rice. He serves on the board of the Iraq Afghanistan Veterans of America (IAVA), The Johns Hopkins University, and founded an organization called STAND! that works with Baltimore youth involved in the criminal justice system.

I think the citizens of Utah are better served by their university than are the citizens of New Jersey.

Just sayin'.

4 The only object that I would have had to her speaking was the $35k price tag. Shit like that is the reason tuition is so high. Sad thing is you just know they would have let Barky speak even though he's responsible for the War in Libya and drone killings sans due process, which you know is soooooo much less horrific than waterboarding or something.

5 Nascar knockout qualifying on Fox. First time this style of qualifying has ever been done at Talladega. More exciting, more TV friendly, lot more room for a huge crash. Old style was one car at a time. New style is everybody qualifies at the same time. 3 rounds. Gets cut to 24 cars in Round 2, 12 cars for final round. Lot more chaos. If there's a big multi-car wreck it's gonna be a lot more expensive. Rare for Fox to put qualifying on the main Fox broadcast channel and not FoxSports 1 cable channel. Nascar made a lot of rule changes in the off-season to make things more dramatic, this was one of those changes.

Theoretically I guess, Rut gers is against Condi because of "War Crimes" (tm), but their hero B Otyrant has continued those wars, and started new ones as well as assassinated American citizens and did nothing to protect a US Ambassador and Consulate from getting murdered.

Its almost enough to make you think its just politics.

And of course, the rampant racism and sexism at Rut gers.

7 Talladega. Have you ever been down there? I use to do shit with NASCAR, had a hard card. Went down one year. It is a zoo. They have their own jail at the track and an landing strip in the track. There are a lot of hot hot redneck drunk women and that's all I am saying.

8 Anyone still here?
Ms.Rice was scheduled to speak here at the University of Minnesota a few weeks ago. There were a few minor protests that tried to get her canceled. Incredibly, saner heads prevailed and she spoke as planned. I'm shocked seeing how it is Minneapolis and all. It gives me hope!

See you in the gardening thread.

9 This is why Condi should learn to travel with her golf clubs and fishing gear.  Eighteen holes in the morning followed by $100 grilled cheese sandwiches and fly fishing in the evening makes contingency planning much more satisfying.

15 Of course, at a super speedway with restrictor plates pack racing like Dega, starting position means much less than a normal track. So this new qualifying format will be most exciting on the tracks where it actually means the least.

I'm guessing they're probably directed donations as well which would make them harder to use for other things. Still though it seems a bit gauche that tuition keeps getting higher and higher and what we get for it is fancy speakers and such. I'm far from outraged though, at best I'm just going "meh, bad form."

25 Mildly interesting to go into the comments section of the article linked in the post regarding CR backing out of commencement. There are quite a few conservatives posting, but what is mind altering is the rationale of the leftists on there. Did you all know that CR "murdered" 4,000 soldiers? That she went shoe shopping on Fifth Ave. when New Orleans was hit with a hurricane, while Fidel Castro offered to send medical personnel? That she is a "Bushie" who lied about WMD to trick us into going to war for oil? That she ignored all the of "advanced warning" of 9/11?

We're from Dr. Morsi!" http://preview.tinyurl.com/ldt67vn Posted by: A brightly-colored little bird told me at May 03, 2014 01:28 PM (1/4XQ) How about this scenario: Obama and Clinton wanted to release the Blind Sheik and concocted a fake kidnaping of Ambassador Stevens in order to justify it. A peaceful solution to the kidnaping would also make them look like statesmen in advance of the 2012 election. This would also explain the lax security at the diplomatic compound. The jihadis launch a planned kidnaping "raid". Woods and Doherty, not in on the plan, stumble across the scene, assume a genuine attack is under way, and respond accordingly. It turns into a real firefight in which Woods and Doherty are killed, along with lots of jihadis. In the midst of the confusion, military units are told to stand down and not to come to the aid of the people in the compound, because it's not supposed to be a real attack, just a sham one. The surving jihadis are enraged and assume that they were double-crossed and lured into a trap, so they kill Stevens and Smith. So what started out as a political ploy turned into a disastrous clusterfuck of the first magnitude. This would be ample reason for a coverup. Thoughts?

58 You could also look at the planned commencement speech that Michelle Obama was going to do but cancelled and compare it to Rice's.  Condoleeza's would obviously have been a very standard and normal graduation commencement speech.  Michelle Obama's was going to be to a bunch of high schools and with the reason of her speaking being the anniversary of Brown vs Board of Education.  In other words it was going to be an event much more about that and Obama than the graduation of the students.

122 O.M.G. (don't know if this was already discussed) Harrington Discusses Story on Non-English Speakers Getting Fast-Tracked for Disability Approval ... Sessions revealed a policy for SSDI payments that allows individuals to qualify for benefits more quickly if “they are incapable of communicating in English.” The Social Security Act allows for the consideration of education when deciding if an individual is disabled. “The education factor is not limited to actual education as it relates to schooling, but includes a linguistic limitation on the ability to communicate in the English language,” Sessions said. “It’s almost a loophole,” she said. “Social Security disability insurance is meant for individuals in the workforce, American citizens who are no longer able to work because of a physical or mental impairment. To become an American citizen, you have to demonstrate at least a basic knowledge of the English language, and now they’re finding in these hearings individuals applying are saying, ‘Oh, I can’t speak English’ through a translator. They don’t have to prove it, and they’re getting automatically approved.” So, now they are taking advantage, and throwing under the bus real handicapped people to get votes. "Loophole?" This is hideous. How do we fix this? They have lawyers and policy makers sifting through everything to find loopholes to buy votes. http://tinyurl.com/krormdt

149 I just switched on the TV to NBC to begin the Derby coverage and my eyes and soul were assaulted by the sight of Johnny Weird and Tara Lipinski in Derby Fashions. Johnny has on a turbanesque white hat with feathers and a unicorn sticking out of the front, a white jacket, shirt collar complete with rhinestones and red lipstick. That is a freak show that doesn't belong at the Derby. If I promise Johnny and NBC that I won't come to the Folsom Street Festival, will he promise to stop crapping all over my sport events?
