Here's some clue-goo for ya: deficits are "massively directional." They get very big and very bad, very quickly, in a sputtering economy, and very small, also very quickly, in a good one.

The key to this mystery is something that just doesn't occur to the Washington Post reporter: The economy is doing a hell of a lot better than any in the MSM care to admit, even to themselves.

Don't expect a similar media pounding on Ned Lamont for his apparent cluelessness that gas prices have fallen.

Optimism Watch: Geraghty looks at the polls and finds things aren't as bad as the media claims.

For one thing, a Republican has a good chance of knocking off a Democrat in a Democrat-held seat. Any net pick-up like this makes it harder for the Democrats to gain a net fifteen seats, of course.

For another thing -- that old partisan affiliation in poll samples. Are there really so many more Democrats now as there were in 2004? Or are Republicans just hanging up on pollsters more often?

Children banned from playing tag during recess.

The age-old game is now banned by the principal, who says recess is a time "when accidents can happen." Officials are also afraid if someone gets hurt, the school will get sued.

Along with tag, the youngsters can't play touch football or any other game in which they're chasing each other.

How, precisely, are children supposed to internalize things like paying attention, making strategic choices, competing successfully, dealing with setbacks, and bouncing back from a boo-boo if they aren't allowed to play the most basic games and sports?

Some things cannot be taught to young children through mere verbalization or sit-down games. They have to go run some energy off, and they have to act things out in reality.

This is because of the parents who sue schools over bloody noses, of course.
