Chicken is still comparatively inexpensive in this country, and there is no better and easier way to make great roast chicken than by flattening the bird so it cooks evenly. It takes about 30 seconds, and in addition to making over-cooking or under-cooking a thing of the past, it exposes more of the meat to whatever marinades or brines or spice rubs you feel like using, because let's face it, chicken is boring.

Its said that everyone is a total freaking jackass at least 10 or 15 minutes out of each day. Normal people try hard to restrict that jackassery to within the privacy of their own home when it becomes uncontainable and just bursts out.

Not Bob. Bob is special. Bob needed to let it erupt publicly like Krakatoa for everyone to see, because he's a sharing kinda guy. He thinks his derangement and towering box of rocks intellect will be helpful to you.

Some of the TV shows I've been watching recently include Breaking Bad, Sons of Anarchy, Hell on Wheels and Copper. I like them, I think they're well-crafted and entertaining, but all of them are pretty dark and the plots usually involve conflicts between various shades of bad guys. Mrs. Muse has stopped watching most of them because there's nobody she likes, or can identify with.

A steady diet of this sort of thing kind of wears on my soul after awhile, so every now and then it's good to watch something more uplifting. This is why I recommend Ocean Heaven, a 2010 Jet Li movie, and no, this is not a martial arts film. Jet Li is a widower whose life revolves around caring for his severely autistic son, now almost an adult. The father has just been diagnosed with cancer of the liver and has only a few months to live, and he has to figure out how to see that his son is taken care of after he's gone. Jet Li is a surprisingly good actor in this role, and Wen Zhang gives a remarkable performance as the autistic son.

So here you have a story about good people struggling to cope with the adversity that life throws at them, rather than an evil bad guy trying to rip off some other, slightly more evil, bad guy, and I found it rather refreshing.

The trailer makes Ocean Heaven look kind of sappy, but it really isn't.

Yet, entertaining as all this political drama may seem, the theater itself is indeed burning. For the fiscal position of the federal government is in fact much worse today than is commonly realized. As anyone can see who reads the most recent long-term budget outlook—published last month by the Congressional Budget Office, and almost entirely ignored by the media—the question is not if the United States will default but when and on which of its rapidly spiraling liabilities.

Our Uncertain Future

I'm coming to the conclusion of Unintended Consequences by John Ross and I can't say that I like the direction it's taken: it's turned from gun pr0n into revenge pr0n. But I will say this: among firearms enthusiasts, there's not a lot of love for the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms.

I mentioned this to my gun nut brother a while back ("Are you reading that? That's a classic book!") and that started a discussion about books in general and America-is-going-to-hell novels in particular, and he told me he enjoys reading what he calls "near-future American balkanization" stories, involving armed resistance to federal tyranny. So I thought I'd pass along his recommendation of Matthew Bracken's 'Enemies' trilogy, Enemies Foreign and Domestic, Domestic Enemies: The Reconquista, and Foreign Enemies And Traitors.

And along these same lines, there's the America-has-screwed-the-pooch novels of D.W. Ulsterman, mentioned in previous book threads, Domitatus and Tumultus.

Perhaps some of you morons can recommend others of this type of novel.

And speaking of the destruction of civilizations, God's Battalions: The Case for the Crusades by Rodney Stark arrived in the mail a couple of days ago and is now on my never-shrinking stack.
