A Couple Of Things To Fill A Thread
— DrewM

The Senate passed the Food Stamp bill that also includes subsidies for farmers.

Reminder: It's a crowded field but Oregon kind of stands out among all the ObamaCare disasters.

Judge in Connecticut upholds the state's gun law.

Liberal spin...ObamaCare won't kill jobs, it will just enable people to quit their jobs. So you get to pay more for insurance so that your neighbor can quit his job. Welcome to Obama's America...spread that wealth around.

18 This is more in the same vein as "Funemployment." Got a sort of job interview with an old boss of mine where he works now. He said I would be great at the job but that I might find it tedious. It also does not pay as well as my old one. However, he said two things: There is virtually no drama there and Management is sane. Sounds pretty good to me, especially that last.

33 Hmm, so the Judge in the CT gun control case argued that the 2nd Amendment must be balanced against public safety. How come public safety always compels gov't agents to insist on more gov't control? I don't think it's terribly safe to continue to borrow trillions of dollars per year, robbing many of us of wealth. There's a compelling interest in sustainable economic policy due to the obvious connection between a wealthy nation and a peaceful nation. Does the safety of the unborn outweigh the phoney baloney "right to privacy"?

The old adage that if you have money you can make money  is so true.   They are building another Top Golf driving range  north of Houston in Spring.    I figure the approximate start up is about 20 million.   The one they built last year west of Houston, in Katy probably nets 10 million a year .

If you don't know what Top Golf is its a multi level driving range  with computerized balls ( they have a  chip in them)  that  allows for the distance and location to be tracked in order to  keep score in a number of different games.   Its like going bowling.  They serve great  food and alcohol .   A British  partnership   owns it.   Damn  those limeys.

90 If you think it is easy to be a family farmer these days, think again. It is a business like any other, only with a hell of a lot more on the line than some dot.com or storefront. Your family lives there, so if you fail, you don't get to go home. Your home is on the line only if you overextend your finances. Just like any other business. Any business owner takes the same risk. You can use math to quantify your risk and mitigate it, just like any business. If you want to argue that you should get more of my hard-earned money for your family, which necessarily leaves less money for my family, you can go climb in a debarking machine.

Three more years.  And something tells me it's going to be longer than  that.   If no rebellion from the states are forthcoming, I will start giving ex-patriotation some serious thought.  If this keeps up for very much longer,  there won't be anything to fight for anymore.

As far as freedom goes, there are other countries where, at least, in passing observance are  more free than this one.  I'd rather have a little freedom than none at all.

Then set the farm up either as a corporation or possibly an LLC (depending on your state laws.) Doing so would protect many of the assets. I'm OK with crop insurance too (although I do wonder why the government seems to be the sole provider.)

106 Former CIA Director Mike Morell may have altered the Benghazi talking points to benefit the Obama administration during the 2012 election, Catherine Herridge of Fox News reports.

On September 15 one day before Susan Rice made her infamous appearances on various Sunday shows, according to the bipartisan Senate Intelligence Committee report Morell received an email from the CIA station chief in Libya indicating the Benghazi attacks were “not/not an escalation of protests.” The report does not indicate when Morell read the email, but that same day Morell cut the word “Islamic” from the talking points and left the word “demonstration.”

On September 16, Morell emailed embassy staff in Tripoli asking for more information. The FBI and CIA reviewed the closed circuit footage on September 18 showing there were no protests. Yet, President Obama still employed the “demonstration” verbiage just days later.

No, polyandry is multiple husbands with one wife.

In theory, that is.

It is the nature of love to bind itself, and the institution of marriage merely paid the average man the compliment of taking him at his word." - A defense of Rash Vows

158 In my long life's experience I've learned that women, or at least a lot of women, seem to view sex and monogamy differently than men.  It appears to me, and I could be wrong, that women have different standards for themselves than for their mates (same could be said for many men).  For a woman, a fling without emotional involvement can be forgiven oneself and forgotten, as though it never happened, as can a one night's stand when one is "vulnerable."

And it seems to be true that women like to bed alpha "rascals" who are a little dangerous and aggressive, but marry relatively docile nice guys who, though they can be very masculine, tend to go along to get along and who make good dads.  So the offspring can be from the macho player, raised by the good dad husband.

Guess I am just an old fashioned kind of guy, but these "Poly-" anythings do not make sense to me. Love has always been a jealous emotion. This can be taken to extremes of course, but it is the way it should be.

Otherwise it is not really Love is it?

---------------

Well in theory, the sister-wives are supposed to Love their husband so much that they want whatever makes him happy.

And if multiple wives are what makes him happy, then they are supposed to be okay with that.

Sister-wives are also supposed to love each other, and not be jealous of each other.

I would imagine that the same theory applies in Polyandry, as well.

So the idea of 'Love' is redefined in a poly- relationship.

Of course it helps if there is also a religious component, that acts to enforce this.

180 In my long life's experience I've learned that women, or at least a lot of women, seem to view sex and monogamy differently than men. It appears to me, and I could be wrong, that women have different standards for themselves than for their mates (same could be said for many men). For a woman, a fling without emotional involvement can be forgiven oneself and forgotten, as though it never happened, as can a one night's stand when one is "vulnerable." I find that hard to believe. I do believe that when a guy says "it was just a piece of ass. it didn't mean anything", he can truly mean it.

186 Posted by: JackStraw at February 04, 2014 06:11 PM (g1DWB) I've always assumed the term originated as a sort of derivative of "it's too beautiful to eat." That is to say people want the decoration, but also want to eat it. FWIW, my wedding cake was that way. A good friend's mom is a retired baker who still does wedding cakes for said friends. Our cake had 100 handspun roses on it. Normally that'd have been entirely unaffordable. We were lucky. Funny thing though, the night before the wedding I got a hilarious call from said friend's mom. The Midwest humidity had shriveled the icing so she had to put fondant on, something she hates to do. So she called profusely apologizing that she had to use fondant, but promised to use her expensive imported German stuff that she had in case of such emergency.

One of the kids may get the impression that Mommy or Daddy loves one of the others "More". I am not trying to tie the two together in a creepy way, just comparing the dynamics.

Two leading House conservatives told The Washington Post on Tuesday they do not want House Speaker John A. Boehner (R-Ohio) to move toward a dramatic standoff on the debt limit, signaling a break from the combative fiscal politics they have long championed.

Both Amash and Labrador said they would not criticize Boehner if he moved to pass an extension without strings attached, saying many conservatives want to focus on issues where policy wins are possible.

ItÂ’s also a rare development. Amash and Labrador both declined to support Boehner during last yearÂ’s speaker elections and have long been a thorn in the side of the leadership, often urging GOP brass to be more aggressive, especially during last yearÂ’s government shutdown.

Nevergiveup, Fwannce has long had a very good and aggressive international oil operation (now, I believe, all rolled into one, whereas before there were several major players, all with some degree of state ownership).   And not being idiots, the Fwench will not abandon the biggest best commodity business on earth - petroleum - which also has a bright and endless future.

This little tidbit nicely illustrates - though needing such illustration sort of defines one as an NPR-stupid Beltway airhead, like most Dems and many others - that "sanctions" are a tricky animal with limited utility, dependent on circumstances of each case, and are easily unraveled or neutralized.  The sanctions against Iran are actually an incredibly impressive, nearly unprecedented herculean accomplishment (er, *were*).   You couldn't pick a much more difficult target than an energy-rich country with many borders and one of the longest most distinguished trading and commerce traditions of mankind.

Yet the sanctions actually did bite.  They helped create the conditions for the unrest that the US, under its pathetic and disastrous affirmative action non-entity of a "president", despicably and shamefully scorned a few years back.   It's almost to the point, given the degradation of the US itself, that even very large foreign policy catastrophes such as the Iran debacle simply don't bother me any longer.

It won't "burn" - "it" already is burning.  The burn is not riots in the streets and collapsing power grids and banking networks.  The burn is slow, sometimes insidious, sometimes brutal and instant (lifetime of easily self-provided health insurance instantly ended, with no options to adapt, for example).  It's seen in the mindset of so much of the young (hardly Americans in any meaningful sense), the corruption and decay of institutions, the lawlessness, the racism and tribalism that have been elevated to almost the central organizing principles of the hitherto least racist mixed society in history.  It's already more than half burnt.  No smoke or ashes - just disappearing freedoms, narrowing prospects for prosperity, degradation and cretinization of civic culture, loss of ability to influence the future at home and abroad.

She said that she might not ever see anyone else, but she liked that I knew she could. Well, now she's pregnant, and I'm wondering the obvious. We do have intercourse, but not often. She was away on business near the time she would have conceived. I don't know whether she's ever had another lover. I could have asked that before, but now I'm afraid of how it would come across. Oh, on the Scalia/internment camps thing.

Has anyone ever evaluated FDR's executive order from the perspective of Geneva requirements?  I believe upwards of 40% of those interned in the camps were either Japanese nationals or dual nationals.  Under Geneva, civilian nationals of enemy powers ("enemy aliens") caught on the territory of the advsersary during war-time should be, ceteris paribus, interned/separated from the local populace, for their own safety.

These provisions arose rather obviously from the frequency with this this "oops I'm on the wrong side of the border in this valley" occurred in Europe's many wars, which of course was the laboratory that created the entire Geneva/Hague framework (though the idea of a formal code of conduct for war started with the American Civil War, interestingly enough).  Think of Alsace-Lorraine - and being either German or French, in various years between 1871 and 1945.

So there's the question of whether Geneva *required* the US to intern Japanese nationals.  This along with the espionage issue (there were, of course, real concerns along those lines, quite logical, and I think even based on some actual cases) seem to be as unknown as the general issue is famous/infamous.

There's examples of espionage, not to mention out-and-out treason. During the Niihau Incident immediately after Pearl Harbor, the three nisei who lived on the island turned on a dime to betray their country and their neighbors, including taking hostages, hiding an enemy combatant, attempted murder etc.

Internment on a mass scale could certainly be considered a wild overreaction, but it wasn't totally unjustified.

And if 20 million people died wouldn't that open up a bunch of jobs?

As some of you know, I teach.  I had a student ask for permission to take a final early last semester.

I asked why.

The kids were filing out, as the lecture was over, but there were still 30 or so still in the room.

He said he just got a job with FEMA.

I said "Hey, those internment camps aren't going to build themselves, right?"

The good news:  many of the students (18-25 year olds) laughed knowingly.

The bad news:  the student dropped his eyes to the lower right (for those of you schooled in interrogation... you know what that means).

Odd encounter.  Probably something that was inappropriate for me, in my capacity as a prof to say, but eh.... whatever.  Interesting result.

404 Long before the emergence of the CIA and other Cold War spy agencies, a small-but-daring group of Americans became the countryÂ’s invisible eyes and ears, helping defeat the Axis powers of WWII. Now, almost 70 years later, descendants and other supporters of the members of the Office of Strategic Services are asking Congress to award them the Congressional Gold Medal, the highest civilian honor. The agency was formed in 1942 to coordinate U.S. Armed Forces espionage activity and was the predecessor to AmericaÂ’s intelligence and special-operations communities. It was founded and led by Gen. William "Wild Bill" Donovan, whom President Roosevelt called his "secret legs." Among the other members were actor and Marine Sterling Hayden; famed chef Julia Child; Ralph Bunche, the first African American to receive the Nobel Peace Prize; fashion designer John Weitz; and eventual CIA Director William Casey. -----------

Well that's true...in the 'forced suppression' sense.

Under capitalism, the consumer gets to decide which product or service is the best one...it is a meritocracy.

Cronyism forces products or services on the public which are not 'the best'...and forces the best products to die away, because they cannot compete in the artificially suppressed market place.

Which is fascistic.

Cronyism is anti-consumer...whereas capitalism is pro-consumer.

His work at Willow Run at getting the most power and efficiency out of our fighters, specifically the P-38 did more than anything to help turn the tide in the Pacific. He felt he diminished himself in the eyes of the country and warranted no special favors.

A lot of the control systems, sensors and valves my company makes for refineries are part of the embargo. This would be true of most of our competitors also. So it likely was a choice of return on investment. Selling Crude vs Building refineries. Or stupidity and arrogance that their nuke threat would work. 561 So there's the question of whether Geneva *required* the US to intern Japanese nationals. This along with theespionage issue (there were, of course, real concerns along those lines, quite logical, and I think even based on some actual cases) seem to be as unknown as the general issue is famous/infamous.

Posted by: non-purist at February 04, 2014 06:46 PM (afQnV)

Canada interned people of Japanese origin during WWII, as well. One point that is seldom acknowledged is that, by so doing, they basically ended the possibility of Imperial Japan planting agents in the Japanese communities, and purchasing their silence by means of threats against them or family remaining in Japan.

In Canada, much of the property of interned Japanese Canadians was basically stolen by the agents appointed to "care for" it, but with both the BC Provincial government and the Federal government being Liberal at the time, what else would you expect?

577 There were lots of Americans in the 1930s who wanted no part of getting involved in another European war. The vast majority of isolationists were not pro-Nazi; they just wanted the U.S. to stay out of it. Lindbergh was just the most prominent spokesman for that view. Then there were the Communists who opposed involvement in the early days when the Nazis and Soviets were allies. They turned on a dime when Hitler invaded the USSR and suddenly became vocal proponents of getting involved. See Pete Seeger, for example. At least Lindbergh wasn't a Communist. Most of the pre-war isolationists who weren't Communists reluctantly changed their minds after Pearl Harbor, and supported the war effort after that.

Hah... we ended up with 7 parrots.  I was not by plan and it was definitely not something I'd recommend.  They take 10x the amount of care of a cat or dog.

I love 'em all but if I had it to do all over again:  2.  at most.  Just because they need a buddy.  so 2 is good.

7 was a mistake.  But until that time machine gets invented....

Dog slobber = bad for birds.
Cat slobber = dead birds.

Cats and birds do not mix.  There are exceptions, but rare.

My parrots frequently land ON my german shepherd, and she looks at me asking "um... can I eat that?" and I say "no" and she sulks.

She's just so used to them now that they can roll up and nip her on the tail (it's happened) and she just sighs and goes back to her nap.

Just takes time and a lot of adult supervision.  Never.  Ever leave them alone together.

Our Founders gave their fortunes and in some cases their lives for nothing more than a buzzword according to these anti-Americans.

William Wallace died for nothing more than a buzzword (Mel Gibson's famous "FREEEEEEEDOOOOOOOM" echoing in our ears).

618 I have no idea where he learned that Not just the word, but it's proper use! Conure liked to say "pretty bird", but that wasn't enough emphasis. So he'd say "pretty pretty pretty pretty pretty pretty bird".

636 Farmers are the biggest welfare queens in America. Except Iowa. Every four years they're whores, too. Posted by: Taro Tsujimoto at February 04, 2014 05:28 PM (celt+) If you think it is easy to be a family farmer these days, think again. It is a business like any other, only with a hell of a lot more on the line than some dot.com or storefront. Your family lives there, so if you fail, you don't get to go home. Corporate farming is where most of the subsidies go, anyway. Posted by: tcn TY tcn. That is very true, the small family farmer is being driven into extinction, we are losing a way of life. Some the little bit of what a small farmer got was what kept him in business. Most don't realize that subsidies for years were tied to conservation practices, keeping the most erodible land out of production. Granted that has changed, but it's not a change small farmers caused. It's the big corporate interests that get most of the money and I'm sure helped make that change. FFS Bruce Springsteen gets farm subsidies, that's absurd. All that crap does is drive up the price of farmland and push out the small, poorer farmer. Disclaimer: I farmed my family's farm for 32 years, 1980-2011. Prices were lower many years than when I started, partially due to the govt. distorting the markets. The pittance I got did NOT bother me as it kept us afloat, while the govt. had f'ed up the whole market. Great example, Nixon embargoed soybeans. That led directly to the Japanese investing in Brazil to grow them and become our major competitor and depressing prices.

Girl, we gotcha.

It's so infuriating that you'll note that we're not giving it any play here.

I've been reading a lot of books lately.  You know how sometimes in your life certain key phrases or themes or ideas come up a lot all at once?  Like every time you turn around there's someone saying the same thing?  Reminding you?

Patience.  Steadfastness.  Faith.  Courage.

We hold this line.  We'll be fine.

Slow is fast, fast is slow.

658 Iraq and Afghanistan were not a mistake.  Where are our leaders saying STFU we had to do something and what we did was win.  Obama seems to want to turn that around to make a point about whatever by loosing.

I grew up in the 70s so war is bad etc etc.  I don't want my kid to go off to war either.  However there wasn't a choice.  Osama Bin Laden killed our people and he was supported or at least tolerated by the Afgani govt.  Saddam Hussein tried to assassinate our president.  There is no other time in history where that would be a joke,  I am so sick of these folks making this into a monologue.
