You hate magic?

I in Italy once sharing pictures with the girl who was sitting across from me.  We sent them via Skype.  And it amazed me that the easiest way to share a picture with a girl who was ten feet away from me was to turn it into radio waves, beam them at a box that would turn them into electricity, pour them into the wall, then probably turn them into pulses of light and push those to servers in North America, send them back halfway around the world and undo the first process at the speed of light.

Magic.

And you can imagine that this hasn't gotten any better, given the absolutely frenetic pace at which Kerry has been flying around the planet in his quest for Big! Dramatic! Peace! Deals!

The guy simply is never in the office to deal with ordinary duties such as making sure that the books balance.

I recall the Reagan years, and George Schultz as SECSTATE traveled abroad in any given year about as much as Clinton or Kerry in any given month. Yet Schultz got more done. Never confuse mere activity with actual accomplishment.

100 “Yeah, yeah, I understand the strategy,” Scarborough jumped in. “I just — it’s the stupidest strategy I ever heard. I’m reminded of what George W. Bush said to [former CIA official] George Tenet when he came in and gave him his WMD intel. ‘Is that all you got? Is that the best you got?’”

“If somebody thinks a voter in Raleigh, North Carolina that’s out of work gives a damn about who’s financing 30-second ads, they are too stupid to be in politics,” he continued. “In fact, I would say they are too stupid to be even trusted with common household appliances — say a blender — because they might accidentally stick their face in there and get it chopped off. I mean, you have to be really stupid to think that this is going to work.”

Scarborough also felt that ReidÂ’s highly-charged, personal attacks made against private citizens on the Senate floor demeans the office of the Senate majority leader.

“It’s stunning to me that a Senate majority leader, holding George Mitchell’s spot or Bob Dole’s spot, would be doing this instead of some angry, crafting senator from the South — ‘Hey, go out there and throw some red meat out there,’” he said. “That’s the way it used to be done. I just find it shocking that you have the Senate majority leader using these McCarthyite terms like ‘un-American,’ and no senator on the Democratic side is the least bit uneasy about it.”

There reaches a point, when that old tactic of 'throw-it-out-there-now-then-call-it-old-news'...doesn't work any more.

Plus the fact that Hillary is past her 'sell by' date.

People are more willing to overlook scandals if the candidate has charisma.

And charisma is something that Hillary has never had.

139 "43-year-old man lodges official complaint after overhearing medics talking to his girlfriend about organ donation while he was paralysed but fully conscious in hospital after a stroke"

From the time I first got my driver's license, I had the organ donor endorsement on it. I had been brought up with the understanding that such donations are a gracious, humane, civilized obligation.

I don't have the donor endorsement any more. Two reasons why.

(a) The very unsettling realization that some in the medical community are (as in the horrifying case cited above) playing fast and loose when determining death in marginal cases where organs are potentially available.

(b) That my home state is filling up with immigrants who are organ-donation freeloaders. People who expect and in some cases demand that organs be made available when they need them, but refuse for "cultural and religious" reasons to ever reciprocate.

Until the system changes, I won't go back to the donation endorsement.

I want to see tighter controls on the determination of death. And I want a mutual assistance option where I can specify that my organs be donated only to someone else who is also a donor (or who is medically barred from donating). Remove the freeloaders from the loop.

Lots countries are switching to a model where being on the organ donation list puts you at the top of it should you ever need an organ (obviously you have to have been on the list prior to your need.) I like that idea of a model. The other problem I have is that more states are passing laws that make it so the patients "wishes" aren't changeable if they've checked "yes" on any organ donation box. I personally don't like this, because when it comes to organ donation, IMHO, the choice is more about what the next of kin wants than anything (since they'll be the ones actually living with the decision.) And since most people "make the decision" at the DMV counter, I'm really hesitant to make that some sort of non-overrideable action. That just strikes me as really odd. (I've told my family I'd like to donate, but that I want them to do what they feel is the best.)

Anyway, I asked her if she thought she should have the freedom to turn down a heterosexual or gay male couple. She says OF COURSE because Art!!! And eeewww. But mostly Art!!! Religion, political opinion, moral conviction, NO. That has to be uniform and approved. So if you want to go against the dogma, you'd better claim Art!!!!! as the reason. But, I'm already tied to IE (running it in a Windows 7 VM on my CentOS laptop) for logging into Outlook Web Access which is always running, so I can use that as my work-around. Also, Chromium on the CentOS host supports smartcards, so there's that.

Last time I started to get agitated when they said, "Why don't you just sign up for Obamacare?" we agreed not to discuss that. It's actually probably good for that friend because it causes cognitive dissonance. They know I'm not a racist who hates poor people and yet I'm a Tea Partier. So maybe that means all the negative sterotypes they have of Tea Partiers are not accurate. Almost my friends are liberals, We don't discuss politics. I, in turn can see that not all liberals are bad people because I knew them as people before I knew their political beliefs. Almost all of the same friends are Christians and many are clergy. To me, "political differences" are when a friend and I can't agree to vote YES or NO on the local sewer plant bond package.

When someone fullthroatedly endorses a political agenda which involves massive, intrusive, involuntary, frightening government assaults on my core beliefs? That's a wee bit beyond mere "political differences".

I've now had a couple of previous friendships of long standing come apart as a result. I regret that it came to that.

However, while bridges have been burned, I was not the person who lit the match.

For example, I'm not the one going around saying that people who disagree with me on certain issues deserve to have their careers and livelihoods taken away. Wheras THEY are doing just that.

Never have been able to eat fish.  A little sword fish back in the 60's when mom made it, then the mercury scare.  I can eat shrimp and lobster.  Never have liked fish for some reason.

Oh, but Charlie,  tuna sammies are good.

Processed? WTF do they have to do besides gut it and filet it?

Posted by: rickb223 at April 04, 2014 02:39 PM (d0Dmj)

270 Well, that's where I think part of the problem is. Many people are simply uneducated. I doubt my friends even know what happened to Eich and if they did they would not agree that he should be fired because of his POV. Just as there are various stripes if people within conservatism, there are various stripes of people within liberalism Not all liberals are leftists. Some are idealists who have never bothered to seriously question the political beliefs they were raised with. Maybe that's what we need. Instead of people who are shouting at each other across a divide we need people can articulate the "other" point of view without demonizing everyone on the other side, There is a sociologist who has a book about this. The title escapes me, The subtitle is "Why good people can disagree on politics about religion." Good book

273 It's Slate and not Salon and it looks like the "Purge" was supposed to be a satire à la "A Modest Proposal". See the sock link's update. Unless you're thinking of Salon's Joan Walsh claiming to Tingles that it's racist like "birtherism" to call TFG's administration the "Obama regime" that's also reported at WZ.

280 252 The only Dems in my close circle are cultural Dems. That is, they really aren't ideological at all. Low information. They fill in the D box because that's how mama and daddy voted. I really don't know any real committed lefties. Although my nephew does recycle. Posted by: grammie winger at April 04, 2014 06:30 PM (oMKp3) Have you explained to him how recycling anything other than metal is detrimental to the environment?

282 It's all good.  I've done a lot of fishing in my day. Coastal.  Great Lakes. Farm ponds. Trout streams.  Dad's a fishing fanatic.  And I know fresh..  Damn that's good beer.

284 If someone won't eat "farm raised" fish, whAt the hell do they eat the rest of the time? Where does all your beef, pork, chicken, lamb come from? Or do you nibble on dandelion greens from the backyard? Stick with "product of USA" & the fish is fine. Unless you live on the coast like the lucky few, your seafood is farmed. It's as safe as that farmed raised arugula & kale in "icebox."

It doesn't matter.  The nutjobs who went for Eich won't stop until the big dogs force them to stop.  The good news, in general but not for the victims, is that it will be too late, the damage will be done, and the results will be devastating for the Dems.

289 I'm sorry for your pain. Thanks, but I'm not in pain-except physically sometimes. Of course, I can get distressed about politics (0r i wouldn't be here) and angry of course but I know who I am. whose I am and where I am going. That keeps me from becoming hopeless and for that I thank God. And yes, my friends are good people. They simply lack a lot of information. None of my friends are moonbat angry leftists.

Fishermen are fishermen.  I understand.  But when I pass the seafood case at the store and I see a nice looking chunk of catfish, I'm buying it.  And, from my experience, it is usually damn  tasty.

Being picky with food has never been something I've been accused of.  If it looks good, I'll eat it.
