By The Prickling Of My Thumbs, An ONT This Way Comes [Weirddave]
— Ace Open Blog

Thursday night! I got my BB code chops warmed up (maybe, until last week I hadn't written anything in BB for 15 years), had a nice dinner, I'm feeling good! Lets see how this goes.

Morons In The News

In case you missed it, Moron author Mark Huffman was interviewed about his new book The Toot Fairy on Good Morning Texas this week. Anesthesiologist Turned Author. I asked him why he looked like Jesse Kelly, and Mark said he's not nearly as tall as Jesse. Jesse isn't as tall as Jesse either, next time you see him look closely. He wears shoes with 24” lifts. In any event, if farts aren't your thing, Mark has written several other books and a sextology of short stories called Sweet Tooth about an ethical vampire living in the present day. Personally, I love the Sweet Tooth stories, my wife even referred to the writing as "Gaimanesque”, which is a pretty good compliment considering what a great author Neil Gaiman is. You should check them out, they are $.99 each on Amazon and the omnibus is only $4.95.

Blockbuster Is Back!

Blockbuster has placed a bunch of "Take one, leave one” lending boxes across the country. Cincinnati now has 3 'Free Blockbusters' bringing back the community video store It's a neat idea, and I've seen pictures posted of the boxes across the country. Only problem is that in the pictures I've seen, people seem to be dropping off an equal number of VHS tapes as DVDs. Show of hands, who even has a VCR anymore? *raises hand, but mine is on a shelf, not hooked up. It still works, however*

A Smart Military Blog

The Oldest recruit To Ever join The Marines

At first I was a little jadded reading the story, the 50 year old used connections to get in, and after Parris Island, he was immediately promoted to Corporal and then Staff Sergeant. Seven months later he was made a Captain. "Nothing but connections” I thought. Well, I was wrong:

During the battle of Peleliu, while serving as the division adjutant to 3rd Battalion, 7th Marines, Captain Douglas made trips to the front lines to evacuate the wounded and dead men. During one of these trips Douglas saw that the men were in desperate need of flamethrower and rocket launcher ammo. He swiftly returned to the rear and hand-delivered the men the ammo under heavy mortar and small arms fire. For these heroic actions, Douglas would be awarded the Bronze Star medal. Later into the campaign at Peleliu, Douglas came under fire and was hit by a piece of shrapnel, for which he received his first Purple Heart medal.

Douglas went on to serve in the battle of Okinawa, often being remembered by Marines for running around the battlefield with the vigor of a much younger Marine. He was promoted to major during the battle of Okinawa. Pfc. Paul E. Ison stated that it was after the major had pulled his demolition team aside to assist in resupplying ammo to the front lines that he noticed Douglas had been injured.

Douglas had been hit by a machine gun in his left forearm and was evacuated by the men that he had dedicated his life to serving. After being hit, he proceeded to use his uninjured hand to take off his major rank insignia so that he wouldn’t receive special attention. Ison said, "If I live to be 100 years old I will never forget this scene. There, lying on the ground, bleeding from his wound was a white-haired Marine major. He had been hit by a machine gun bullet. Although he was in pain, he was calm and I have never seen such dignity in a man. He was saying ‘Leave me here. Get the young men out first. I have lived my life. Please let them live theirs.”

That right there is a MAN, folks. No, that's a MARINE. Read the rest at the link.

Scott Sterling!

Anyone remember this?

They also did one where Scott was captain of the volleyball team. That one's pretty funny too, and the bit where the rest of the team pick an unconscious Scott up and rushes to the net to block a shot with his face is hilarious.

One Of The Best Things About The HQ

Is how many smart people there are here, knowledgeable in so many different things, who are always ready to help out if someone needs it. Well, here are some stories of that writ large on the internet:

Moments When Experts on the Internet Came to the Rescue

Here's an example: Last week a bunch of y'all told me how to convert the 9.9 Johnsons I scored into 15s, I might do it but I haven't been able to find a 15 carb yet. Apparently it's a popular thing to do, all the places I've found that sell 15hp carbs are sold out. There's more to the story, however.

Last Saturday, I scored a boat. A 14' Mirro Craft Deep Fisherman, I got it for a song. It was a real mess, full of dirt and leaves, it had a couple of (trashed) seats randomly bolted to the built in bench seats and a bunch of other stuff wrong with it. There were wires sticking out all over it, it had at one point been wired with running lights, including a stern light hanging drunkenly from a broken mast. There was a power strip bolted to the side of the boat for some unknown reason, and holes where other things had been attached then removed all around. The transom was so much wood-colored rot, I put my thumb right through it. The hull was solid, however.

First challenge was getting it home in a truck with a 6' bed. Couple of ratchet straps and a red flag on the back solved that. When I got it home I pulled all of the wiring and crap out of it, used an angle grinder to sand down all the rough bolt holes, pulled the broken nav lights and made a new transom out of a 2 X 10 that I had sitting around. End result: A quite serviceable fishing/runabout boat for the small private lake I live on. I'm pleased.

That Worked. These, However...

I can handle the addlepated commenting system.  But the main posts inability to display embedded articles is maddening.  And I don't mean the online sportsball game.

At least the Pre-Fire Minx 0.7 Alpha edition worked (mostly) well at getting those links and clips up on the page. Well enough at least, for me to copy the URL and take it over to Edge to display.

Last thread, AOP described how I could use "show source" in the pull down menu to copy the intended address.  Got nothing but a 403 error.  *sigh*

What this blogs needs is a good old fashioned 15 hp. carburetor.

Only problem is that in the pictures I've seen, people seem to be dropping off an equal number of VHS tapes as DVDs. Show of hands, who even has a VCR anymore? *raises hand, but mine is on a shelf, not hooked up. It still works, however*

--

I have 4, one of which doesn't work but had a tape stuck in it which saved it from recycling before but as I am cleaning/purging now once I get to it it is gone.

Not actually certain the other three work, and one is a combo VCR/DVD thing.

Posted by: AlaBAMA at April 15, 2021 10:37 PM (i9ZF7)

It's actually quite easy, using this one simple trick.
First, align the vehicle in a straight line with the thing you are towing.  When you back up, put your hand at the bottom of the steering wheel. Whichever way you move the wheel, that is the same direction as the back end of the boat/camper/trailer will go.
Geez, what do you know, I was able to be useful today.

Class dismissed, go drink, but please don't drive.

Alabama... come to work with me, and you'll be driving a 14 pax Ford Transit van, and often pulling a 12' enclosed cargo trailer, for passengers' luggage.

Most the places we frequent have a good pull-through passenger loading zone, which is cool.  At least two Island hotels though, ya gotta back out the way you came in, and there's one downtown Houston hotel where there's no other choice than to have to parallel park the entire rig, whenever there's another car or two at either end of the commercial passenger zone.  It's either that, or get a ticket for loading 'em in the street and obstructing traffic.

The wheelbase of the Transit is longer than the hitch to axle length of the trailer.  When backing down, the thing is doing it's damnedest to jackknife on you, every foot of the way.  Master that thing, and backing a boat down the ramp becomes a breeze.

Eh.....while it's admittedly been almost 20 years, I remember the Crucible as being more of a pain in the ass than brutal.  Lack of sleep - you get maybe four hours of it over two full days of intense activity - is the biggest problem.  Gas chamber sucks but it's over with quickly.  Gas chamber once you're out in the fleet is pretty easy though cause you're wearing full MOPP gear.  Recruits don't get that.

Alinco, ICOM: good gear, usually get the fancy displays and new features before anyone else

Kenwood: Audio is good. OK radios. Haven't had much experience with them

Yaesu: Stronk, like bool. You hit man, hit him with radio, yes? Smash in head, many time, like rock? Radio, he still work.

I'd recommend tracking down the USB programming cable, it's a hell of a lot easier than programming through the keypad. Also a hand mic and a magmount dual-band antenna even if you're not going to be using it mobile, since the #1 best way to get better TX/RX with a real antenna instead of the rubber ducky.

164 We had an OIS in town two days ago.  Wife calls 911, husband is attacking her.  Cops arrive, perp runs at them with a length of pipe, gets shot.  Instantly, the Policing Integrity Task Force was mobilized to think of all the ways to stop a lethal attack without use of force, then grill the cop on why didn't he think of that in the split-second of decision.
The Unitarian minister wrote an op-ed: oh, if only somebody would have done SOMETHING before the a-hole discovered plumbing.  See, it's all OUR fault, because WE didn't do SOMETHING.
Who cares about the life of a wife-beater who attacks cops with a lethal weapon?  Why?  When exactly did this country develop such a big fucking heart for vicious thugs and violent losers?  When are they going to wail for the innocent victims for a change?

nerdygirl, I surmise your parents required you all to wake up early every day, held expectations for all of you to do your best in school, stayed on top of the friends you brought home or visited to make reasonably sure they weren't lying thugs, and other kinds of stuff that normal parents who love their kids do.

I also surmise that the thugs mostly didn't have similar overwatch.  It really isn't that complicated.   Yet, Progda goes out of their way to create new excuses for the abhorrent behavior seemingly every day.

I can see that.  I remember well when I rolled and sprained my ankle while running one year.  I was consigned to crutches for about a month, month and a half.  (I hated those things.)  I went to an undisclosed location for coffee the first day before going to work, and a group of people about cleared out of one of the tables thinking I was going to use it (I waved them off but thanked them.)  Then I got my coffee and was like "Well, fuck, how am I going to get the coffee from here to the truck with these bloody crutches?"  A woman offered to take the coffee to the truck, which I accepted.  I wasn't charged for the coffee because apparently they saw how I was struggling to get about the place.  So yeah, sometimes people don't suck.

I live in a suburb of a medium size city. Most of the housing is nice  single family homes, but years ago the idiots running this area zoned for a lot of apartment housing, much of it low income housing. Almost all of the problems around here come from the apartment complexes, particularly the subsidized housing. A few years ago there were about 5 murders within  a couple of years. All of the perps were young males from low income housing complexes.  None of the murderers were from the single family homes.

Remember when Scrooge's passing off any responsibility for helping his fellow man because the govt existed and did these things and that was condemned in the story?
And now that is where we are as a society.

Not even dementia, but just taking advantage of old folks.     For example, my folks about 10 years ago.  Dad got scammed, totally, for $47,000 (this investment deal sounds really GOOD, son!  DAD, WTF???)  Mom knew but supported Dad (like she had for 55 years), and after Dad died of a heart attack, the 4 sons had to take charge of financial affairs and selling their house.
We had to change Mom's number not once, but twice, because the scammers found her new cell # somehow, and one of my brothers had an extra cell under a phone # he wasn't using.  They convinced her that she just needs to give her new address, so they can send her some paperwork to sign, include your bank account number for fast processing, and *just like that*, all of your "investment money" will be on it's way!
In this case and similar ones, I would completely support vigilante justice.  Extreme vigilante justice.

Maybe the way to deal with this is to make such surgical appliances a "lifetime lease" deal, and, upon the demise of the lessee, the lessor regains possession of the appliance for its scrap value. If that were the understanding from the outset, maybe it wouldn't seem quite as creepy.

284 I learned how to parallel park in a 1963 Cadillac Sedan DeVillle. Later in life, I had to take re-take a driving test, because my license had long expired and I had not driven in about 10 years. I took this test in my wife's Ford Econoline Custom van, a six cylinder, 4 speed manual. I was required to parallel park between two cones in the DPS parking lot.
There was a cadre of Mexican immigrants standing outside, waiting for their turn. My wife informed me later they were discussing amongst themselves, and perhaps placing wagers, as to my ability to parallel park the unwieldly Econoline.
I performed the textbook parallel parking maneuver, nailing it on the first try. Pulled up, backed in 45 degrees, and greased the great 20 foot beast in between the two cones, first try, without any do-overs or corrections.
My wife informs me that the Immigrants applauded and cheered.

291 Well, here is some good news.  One step closer to proving  massive election fraud.   From populist.press, linking to an azcentral article earlier today:

The Arizona Senate has found a venue for its recount of Maricopa County’s 2.1 million ballots.

Senate President Karen Fann signed a contract this week to lease the Arizona Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Phoenix from April 19 to May 14 for the Legislature to house the ballots, which were subpoenaed from the county without a place to store them.

Though two previous audits of the county's election results did not turn up problems, the Senate nearly passed a resolution to jail the members of the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors as they fought the subpoenas in court. When the county lost its legal battle, the Senate still had to figure out where, exactly, it would house 2.1 million ballots.

The county supervisors refused to let the state Senate use county property to count the ballots, so the Senate contracted with the Memorial Coliseum, a state-owned property.

Debbie Doberman...

Couple mentions here of Econoline vans.  Great workhorses, and so were the (inferior) Chevy vans (spontaneous disassembly, vibration), and the near-peer Dodge (last forever, but dilapidated after 3 years commercial service.)

And then comes the new Euro themed vans.  Company I work for uses the Ford Transit as primary.  3.5 Eco-Boost engine.  Nearly 400 hp, and diesel-grade torque.  Better ride by 3x than the Econoline, and handling far better than any "van" has a right to enjoy.  125k miles on the fleet, and mechanical issues are of the "maintenance" sort, with none in the "failure" category.

Competitor's fleet of Mercedes Sprinters are serviced by local NTW franchise.  I'm friends with 'em there.  They tell me that fleet is 100% Shop Queens, parts are outrageously expensive, and take a long time to arrive.

And only the cheapest tradesmen shops use the Dodge (Fiat) van.  I've driven one (briefly).  Ergonomics are for a Scoliosis Cripple, and reliability is on par with the Obamacare website rollout.

I used to really like the GM full sized van.  It wasn't a thing to last forever, but it fit well, drove well and worked well, until it didn't.  Which was sadly, more like 150k miles vs 250k miles.

The Transit is a revolution as to what a non-CDL commercial van can be.  Ford struck lightning with this one, and in today's market, it's absolutely the best of the lot.

308 Had to change the water pump in the Econoline once; to the horror of my wife and pre-teen daughter, I could not disengage the fan from outer pump  housing.
There was much cussing and a 3 pound sledge hammer involved. At one point, the 3 pound sledge bounced off of the front bumper and made positive contact with my right shinbone.
The cussing was monumental, such that the wife shielded the daughter's eyes and ears, and ushered her into the house, while I danced around the front yard spewing invective. They were horrified.
I've pretty much paid other people to work on my cars since then.

363    Yeah, this prompted me to look up the Ellis Act. It was in response to a communist CA Supreme Court ruling, Nash vs. City of Santa Monica. In a nutshell, it allowed local govt. (Santa Monica, in this case) to force landlords to continue to rent, and at rent controlled prices.
The Ellis Act nullified that and said that landlords and building owners could go out of business.
It's been a target of communists ever since.

There's been a lot of inquiry as to "jump to top" or "jump to bottom" comment buttons.

But could you PLEASE include a "Refresh and Remain" at current comment comment function, too?  That's how the Pre-Fire "refresh" worked for me here, by the way.  Click "Refresh", and all the previously read comments were upscreen.  And all the fresh, new comments awaited below, right where one had left off at the "refresh" click.  THAT was the easiest system of all.

"Jump to Bottom", you either have to remember the comment number you refreshed from, or scroll up and go look for what was familiar.  And "Jump to Top" is about as useless as it gets.

Your kindness and coding indulgence are, and shall be, Greatly Appreciated.

What would be cool, for Captcha challenges here, would be to build AOS-centric memes. Say, "select all the squares with weasels in them". Regulars would know that all animals are weasels, and would check all the squares.

405    A ground rod, specifically, the standard NEC 8' driven rods aren't that hot of an earth ground. Indeed, this is recognized as no larger than #6 copper is required to connect them.
A metallic water pipe must have at least 10' in contact with earth to be considered a "grounding electrode", and if that is met, it must be treated as such. Otherwise metal piping must be bonded (safety grounding).
One of the best grounding electrodes is actually a concrete slab with rebar. This is known as a "Ufer ground".

410   "Grounding" is one of the most misunderstood subjects in all of electricdom. It has a theoretical, field theory definition, and then it has practical definitions. That field theory definition is basically and infinite source/sink for electric charge. Think a huge ass conductor so big relative to the circuits of interest that it is practically infinite.
Now, that has maybe a little bit to do with the use of grounding in power systems.  There are three distinct types of "grounding" with power systems, "System grounding", "Equipment/safety grounding", and "Earth grounding" as I call them. The first two are standard terminology, the third is my own.

Oh, hey, knowledgeable people, a little help here would be appreciated. An outside frostless faucet leaks badly when running and needs to be replaced. It is connected to a pex line that is just long enough to reach the faucet, no slack.

Having no experience, I bought a pex tool kit to install a faucet that should have a frostless extension a little longer than the bad one. Decision to make- cut off pex at old faucet and, if necessary, add pex to reach new faucet, or remove crimp band from old faucet and install new faucet with piece of old compressed pex remaining and see if it leaks?

My first thought: can you buy parts or a service kit to replace the seals in the old faucet? If it is a well-known brand name, you ought to be able to get them.

Second thought: have you looked at Shark Bite fittings? They are expensive, but reusable if you buy the cheap release tool. And all you need to do is make a square cut in the PEX, and push the fitting on. Done. I have them all through my house here in AJ, no problems yet.

Miklos,

A "cool" car, ain't necessarily a reliable car.  A blend of a bit of both is a Mazda 6.  It has style, but is Accord reliable.

I'd avoid your preferred VW.  They're great when they're great.  They're not so great when gushing steam along I-20 West 30 miles between exits.

Reliable, though?  Rent a Toyota for the ride, and turn it in after and walk away.  It won't be a cool or an inspiring ride.  But it'll damn sure getcha there n' back.

And THAT, is pretty damn cool.

Shark Bite fittings last about a decade, then fail.  Best recipe is to invest in a base level PEX crimp tool and rings, and squeeze and crimp yer damn head off, and carpal tunnel those wrists into the stratosphere.

The loud CLICK! of a properly secured PEX fitting is a most reassuring sound.

424 >>is a single-wire, 15,000 volt line, with an earth return.
"Skeleton systems" is a term for those single wire, earth return circuits (SWER). With DC, earth return can work pretty well. With AC at power frequencies (50 and 60Hz), because of very complex soil electrical properties, the inductance of the soil tends to make the earth return current follow a narrow channel that follows the overheard hot line. That is, if your power line zig-zags around, the brunt of the return current will zig-zag right along underneath it.  With DC (and AC of different frequencies) that doesn't happen, and the return current can spread out far and wide.
SWER can be somewhat dangerous. Stray voltage. The SWER leg needs to be isolated from the system feeding it, and special ground precautions need to be taken on the secondary transformers fed from it.

Buy a recent certified used Mazda, Honda, or Toyota, and be done with it.  "Cool" is COMPTENNCY, and that means getting there and back RELIABLY, vs. "in style".

The only issue I have had with the line happened years ago. I found I was gettting shitty welds with my Mig welder, and the radio was getting crashing bursts of static. It proved to be a loose clamp where my power drop attached to the main line. I walked out with a portable radio, and the staic worsened as I approached the pole. Clamp was arcing.

431     There were some early attempts at SWER in the US (it's not used much for AC) for rural power lines. One big problem was telephone lines running in parallel. The power return current tended to try to get on the telephone lines, and caused all sorts of noise problems, not to mention shock hazards.
