Even More Evidence Flight 370 Was Deliberately Diverted; Probe Now Officially a Criminal Investigation; Pilots Investigated
— Ace

The Malaysia PM now calls the disappearance "deliberate."

Malaysia's prime minister says the disappearance of Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 appears to be "deliberate."

Speaking to the press early Saturday, Prime Minister Najib Razak said the investigation has refocused onto the crew and passengers aboard the missing plane. He added that despite growing evidence to suggest a possible hijacking or sabotage, all possibilities are still being investigated.

..

Earlier, a Malaysian government official who is involved in the investigation said investigators have concluded that one of the pilots or someone else with flying experience hijacked the missing Malaysia Airlines jet.

...

The official said that hijacking was no longer a theory. "It is conclusive."

..

Sources told the Reuters news agency on Friday, meanwhile, that the path Flight 370 appears to have taken after diverting from its intended route strongly suggests that a trained pilot was still in control of the aircraft.

More clues keep coming in, some of them, of course, contradictory, as they usually have been in this case.

First, the plane was allegedly dropped to 5,000 feet. There is no reason to fly at such a low altitude -- it's difficult and it eats up fuel -- unless a skilled pilot intends to evade radar.

Second, despite earlier reports that the ACARS system was turned off before the cockpit issued its last communication with air control ("All right, good night"), there now appears to be considerable doubt about that.

Malaysian officials earlier said those words ["All right, good night"] came after one of the jetliner's data communications systems - the Aircraft Communications Addressing and Reporting System - had been switched off, sharpening suspicion that one or both of the pilots may have been involved in the plane's disappearance.

However, Ahmad said Monday that while the last data transmission from ACARS - which gives plane performance and maintenance information - came before that, it was still unclear at what point the system was switched off. That opened the possibility that both ACARS and the plane's transponders - which make the plane visible to civilian air traffic controllers - were severed later and at about the same time.

So the earlier report seemed based upon the last transmission from ACARS -- not actual evidence the system had been disabled at any particular time. Also, the way I read this, this seems to strongly undermine previous reports that ACARS and the transponder had been turned off at different times -- because it looks like the guess as to when ACARS was turned off only comes from when its last transmission occurred. Assuming that ACARS only pings a satellite intermittently (which must be true), the last transmission from ACARS gives very little clue at all as to when it was turned off. It can only tell you the last time it was definitely on.

A previous report had suggested that Flight 370 disappeared in a corridor of very little radar cover, in between Malaysia's radar system and Vietnam's, suggesting that whoever stole the plane chose the best possible time and place to disable the transponder. I don't know if that report still holds up; everything seems to be revised 24 hours later.

The Daily Mail now reports that it was not the captain but the copilot who said "All right, good night," but I'm not sure that really matters.

On the other hand, this seems worth looking into:

It has also been revealed that the pilot's wife and three children moved out of the family home the day before the plane went missing.

The report goes on to say that US investigators say that the pilot and co-pilot did not ask to be assigned to fly together, reducing the likelihood of a conspiracy between them.

The Daily Mail also claims that nine people in northern Malaysia claim to have seen either bright lights in the sky, or heard a jet engine, or both, the night of the disappearance.

Investigators told the New Straits Times that they were now convinced the aircraft flow low over Kelantan, which is in the north east - exactly the same area where the villagers and fishermen who saw bright lights in the sky on the night the jet vanished are living.

At least nine people - fishermen, farmers and villagers - have made reports to police about seeing lights in the sky and some said they heard the loud noise of an engine.
These accounts appear to match the conclusions of investigators who say the jet flew low after making a sharp turn and heading west from its course over the South China Sea.

The first report of a 'bright light descending at high speed' came from Alif Fathi Abdul Hadi, 29, who said he saw the light heading towards the South China Sea at 1.45am on the night the aircraft disappeared.

A lot has been written about the captain's ownership of a flight simulator. It wouldn't ordinarily seem very suspicious that a pilot owns a flight simulator, but in the current context, of course, every tiny fact is being examined.

The Daily Mail also says a steward aboard the flight owned a flight simulator as well.

That doesn't seem terribly unusual or important to me, but, again, everything is now being looked at.

10 The flight simulator in and of itself means little to me. I mean, when I fly, I kinda hope my pilot is really into flying and does extra practice at home. His family moving out the day before...now that's definitely something. Question: If the pilot was, as some are alleging, pissed off about some government official being jailed for homosexuality, does that mean the pilot is pro-ghey, and therefore, probably not a jihadist?

16 Best case scenario at this point seems to be an elaborate pilot suicide. Best case in the sense of not a terrorist plot with risk of further bad things. Damn odd, though. On the pilot suicide angle I'm still not sure if the actions taken indicate a long held plan or, because of his skill, an impulsive act. It looks long planned, but maybe he was so skilled, perhaps from the simulator, that he could enact this elaborate plan on the spur of the moment.

Four state lawmakers took money, the sources said. State Rep. Ronald G. Waters accepted multiple payments totaling $7,650; State Rep. Vanessa Brown took $4,000; State Rep. Michelle Brownlee received $3,500; and State Rep. Louise Bishop took $1,500, said people with knowledge of the investigation. .. So the state lawmakers were offered bribes. They accepted the bribes. All this was recorded as part of the sting. And no charges will be filed because they were all black. That's a powerful fucking race card.

It seems the plane was tracked for hours after the active signals were turned off.  That plus the radar avoidance effort makes a suicide by plane unlikely.  At this point, I think the biggest concerns are what happens to the passengers, and where/how will this plane re-appear.

Posted by: Advo at March 17, 2014 08:15 AM (7vbG1)

53 I'm going to put down my marker now: It wasn't hijacked. They're going to discover that the engine-status "ping" signals are an error and the radar tracks are some other aircraft. The plane's ACARS and comms all went down at the same time because that's when the plane crashed, right when it failed to turn up in Vietnamese airspace and right where everyone thinks it was. Fuel explosion or catastrophic engine failure. They'll find the debris eventually. Any takers? I'll put $5 on it.

62 If plane was at 45000 and lost pressure it is possible that the pilots were able to descend quickly to 5000 and remained there until they crashed. This could account for no passenger cell phone communication . That the transponder was turned off is the wrench in a lot of theories though. Maybe something else caused the transponder to be off or the reported timing when it was turned off was inaccurate. The same thing that would have caused communications to be down.

74 The flight sim for that level of pilot was for practicing  unusual types of landings. If investigators are able to recover (or eventually reveal) anything it will be that. Think unconventional landings. That will start to make sense after a trip that was very deliberate in avoiding radar.

By the way, this was the pilot. No co-pilot. Given the level of sophisticated flying, etc.

The movement around 45,000 AGL then down to 23,000 involved some type of struggle.

His wife and kids leaving was either a trigger event or planned. But again, we won't get to know that for some time because the investigators have been deliberately slow with any facts that may indict the pilots. Your guess as to why.

Why did the Malaysians have everybody scouring the Gulf of Thailand, the South China Sea, and the Strait of Malacca when they were holding evidence that the plane had flown west of those areas?

98 I'm going to put down my marker now: It wasn't hijacked. Posted by: Trimegistus at March 17, 2014 12:15 PM (wgOKn) The only problem is that the automatic ACARS handshake after the system was turned off transmits a code that uniquely identifies the plane.

They have relatively good radar systems, but not that good (see the UBL Op). Even a heavy could, at the right altitude and without full government knowledge land in Pakistan.

By the  way, it has been reported there are almost 700 airstrips where that plane could have landed (conventional) given range, etc. That goes well above 700 for "unconventional" landings.

Definitely heading into tinfoil territory with this, but I find it extremely unlikely that there were multiple Iranian fake passport holders on one plane, AND that the pilot's family moved out the day of.

My money is now on the idea that Iran is behind this, and blackmailed the pilot by threatening his family if he didn't do what he was told.  The goal was to have a non-traceable plane which could serve as a nuke-delivery device in case Israel or the US (yeah right) actually attacked the Iranian bomb-building facilities.

133 What use would it be for him to turn off plane communications before he crashed it? -- The suicide theory assumes he didn't want anyone to know it was suicide. Which is not uncommon with suicides. People off themselves in weird ways all the time. Sometimes spending hours right on the edge. Perhaps in his own mind if he just used up all the fuel that wouldn't really count vs aiming it at the ground. ... There was a UFC fighter years ago who died in the desert out west on a hike. He was experienced and said he was prepared, but he didn't bring enough water. And left his cell phone behind. And went alone. No note or anything. Plausible deniability. Odd way to off yourself. But people often do odd, elaborate things when they get in mind to off themselves. Just cause you wouldn't do it like that doesn't mean they wouldn't.

4) No good reason was given for discounting that.

4) The Malaysian authorities are dipshits.

Conclusion: A massive raging fire consumed everything that could float and the rest shredded apart and sank.

Wishing to demonstrate your sophistication by announcing you are unencumbered by the false historical narratives of the past is not a foreign policy. The steward having a setup like that is certainly worth investigating, but is it really a red flag?  A waiter wants to be something else?  That's a first.

208 Elaborate suicide theory also has pilot milking the last few hours of his life doing the one thing that still gave him happiness -- flying. Wife and kids left. Politician he uber-supports in jail for sodomy. He hates his family, hates his country, hates the world and wants to get off. But flying serenely over the ocean -- that still gives him some joy. He uses his last flight to do everything he every wanted to. Terrain hugging low flying to avoid radar. Crazy flight simulator stuff he could never do in real life out of fear. But no fear on this flight cause he knows it's his last. Maybe he expected to be shot down. After hours avoiding radar and being unnoticed -- he aims for the deep blue. Calmly flying over the ocean, waiting till the fuel runs out. ... I'm not saying this is super likely. But it's a plausible theory. None of the theories left seem super likely. We're well into rare oddness land whatever happened.

So this was the first time I've seen pictures of the capt's "simulator" at home. I was expecting a whole lot more. One can actually purchase panels with knobs and switches in the same layout as an actual cockpit and get close to what most people envision when they read simulator.

what he has is a gaming computer with a few hundred dollars of hardware. Calling it a simulator is like saying I have a tennis simulator because I have Wii Sports. (not to disparage the quality of some addons one can get for Microsoft flight simulator...apparently the button pushing side of things can be very accurate. I seem to recall some of the 9/11 hijackers having msfs with addons like this.)

of course, if he saved any "interesting routes" or anything like that its a different story...

221 No, my bet still stands. The engine-status pings aren't the same as the ACARS system. And how do you tell the difference between a system being "turned off" and a system being "blown to atoms by a fuel tank explosion"? The Iranians aren't important. If Iran wanted to put people on that plane, they just send them. No fake passports needed; it's perfectly legal for Iranians to fly from Malaysia to Beijing. It's not as if the fakes kept anyone from finding out who the dudes were, after all. We're all hoping for super-secret terrorist masterminds because we don't like the idea that a plane can fail and kill everyone on board with no warning. But that's how I'm betting.

Posted by: Trimegistus at March 17, 2014 08:49 AM (wgOKn)

222 Yeah, part of the confusion is that no nation wants to reveal the exact capabilities of their military radar systems and air defenses. That's understandably sensitive information. In a case like Malaysia, they probably don't want to admit how much their systems suck. In the case of America, there's probably things we know that we don't want to reveal how we know them.

231 Here's why all these conspiracy theories are loopy The only way someone could steal and hide and refuel a 777 would be if a government were involved. You can't just land a 777 on an airfield in the jungle and then have 50K galllons of jetfuel ready to refuel the thing and get it up in the air again. So if a govt is involved like Iran or NoKo or Pakistan...they already have plenty of planes. No need to steal one from the sky.

232 It would seem easy to rule out the suicide crash, as there seems to be too much planning. The Egyptian pilot that crashed his airliner in the atlantic just did it, no shutting off comms etc. Crashing a plane is easy...slap the co-pilot on the head with a big heavy thing, or get him to leave the cockpit for whatever reason, and nosedive. Easy-peasy. This plane is somewhere, most likely intact. To what end? Idunno

That scenario was pretty simple.         This one, of stealing a plane, getting rid of 200+ passengers, converting plane, and using plane again is quite a bit more complicated.  Essentially, it is like stealing a rare car, and then planning to use the car   in another crime.  Not only have you doubled your chances for failure, everybody is looking for you before you start your second mission.

Well, after you load it up with a nuke, dirty bomb or whatever plus maybe a big blivet full of fuel to give you thousands of miles of extra range, you pick another 777 that you are going to mimic.  If it belongs to somebody other than Malasian airlines, you duplicate the paint job.  You also paint tail numbers on it to match the other plane and set the transponder to match as well.  Put some hijackers on the other plane to turn off the transponder and crash it in the middle of the ocean.  Then this 777 which has been flying silent turns on its transponder which matches the now crashed plane and flies the rest of the way on in to LAX or O'Hare.

not to fly it and land it per se but enough to steer it away from population centers?

that's an interesting theory. it was hijacked, some government intercepted it and crashed it to prevent another 911. and now they have to construct a story rather than admit they can do such a thing, and killed a bunch of civilians

My tin foil hat theory:

The pilot went rogue, he simulated the hijacking at home.  When he went off course, the Malaysian military(or another country) shot the plane down.  False flags and misdirection are being used to run out the clock until they can be sure that all of the wreckage has dissipated.....

There is quite a range of equipment that can be called a flight simulator.  At the low end you have an Apple II runing the flight simulator program.  At the high end a complete full motion cockpit simulator that you are not going to touch for less than $10,000,000.  I am guessing that the pilot owned something closer to the low end like a PC with flight simulator software and some controls.  Something like that is not more than a couple of thousand dollars.

399 Why? Both involve cutting off oxygen. Sincere question. Captain Obvious hit the nail on this one. Now, in order: 1) Anoxia is just the endgame of hypoxia. The former is a complete lack of oxygen, the latter, a deficit. 2) The human body uses CO2 as the driver for respiration. If I asphyxiate you at ground level by cutting off the air, you'll damned well notice it, i.e. Auschwitz. OTOH, if I turn off the oxygen to you in a closed environment and scrub the CO2 at the same time, you'll most likely gently lapse into unconsciousness and die. The Air Force deliberately exposes pilots to these conditions to demonstrate to them just how deceptive the symptoms are when there's no CO2 present.

It does make me wonder, then, how much real benefit an actual pilot with thousands of hours of flight experience could gain from a primitive setup like that.  More likely he used it to memorize a specific route to the last detail.

That's my take.  It's much harder to find a hijacked airliner in a hanger than it is to see a debris field.  If the plane had gone down, someone would have seen something by now.  There's a lot that goes into a jet like this, not even counting all the luggage and freight that they carry that could float almost  indefinitely.

And I imagine every eye is peeled right now by pilots flying over these areas, tanker captains and crews, and authorities along the coastlines, for any signs of this airplane.

A transponder code can be changed but an IFR flight can't just appear out of nowhere.  It would have to be handed off from departure control to an air route traffic control center to approach control so its monitored for the entire trip.

435 >>Hmmmm. All 200-odd passengers realize it simultaneously and before they can raise an alarm, all fall asleep? Again, seems unlikely. From the Wiki article on Payne Stewart's death. >National Transportation Safety Board investigators later concluded that the plane suffered a loss of cabin pressure and that all on board died of hypoxia. A delay of only a few seconds in donning oxygen masks, coupled with cognitive and motor skill impairment, could have been enough to result in the pilots' incapacitation. The 2 pilots and all 5 people on board became so incapacitated in a few seconds they couldn't even put on oxygen masks. All died and the plane flew on on autopilot before crashing a few hours later. And besides, even if you knew something was wrong what would you do? If you've been on an international flight since 9/11 you know they have made it virtually impossible to get into the cockpit without some sort of weapon. Who knows, its conceivable that the plane had some sort of catastrophic depressurization and everybody was killed by hypoxia including the pilots.

Others since then have pointed out that the Israelis would shoot it out of the air if it attempted a nuclear suicide run into Tel Aviv. OTOH, given what whackjobs the Iranians are, my guess would be that they use it as an EMP weapon, whereby it doesn't need to get particularly close to Israel to do the job. Once Israel's incapacitated, then you light off weapons you smuggled in, etc., etc. Crazy, I know. But it *is* the Iranians I'm talking about here.

499 The timeline is rapid ascent to 45,000 feet (which most likely killed the passengers) then down to 25,000, then even lower to avoid detection -- or maybe just because the pilot needed the oxygen present at that level because his mask had run out. Someone was running the plane after the ascent. It would take one hell of a bizarre auto-pilot to accomplish that. I'm pretty much sticking to suicide by pilot, after a long trip to the deepest part of the ocean. I'd like to know how much life insurance he had. Posted by: Ugg Boots I have heard that but there is a lot of discussion as to whether that is accurate. I am not saying it is wrong, I have heard a lot of "experts" say they find it hard to believe the malaysians, military or civilian, would be able to identify the flight without a transponder, discuss how military radar is not especially good at determining altitude. if everything you mentioned is accurate it is suggestive of hijacking, but there seems to be a lack of scientific consensus.

I can think out of the box. I am really surprised that a muslim pilot has not hijacked his own plane out of Kennedy here and drove it directly into NYC. Or Paris or London or LA. But it really doens't make all that much sense to hijack a plane on the other side of the world, putting everyone on alert, and then trying to take off from some hidden strip and fly into what with the whole world on alert? Crash it right away into a city sure, wait till later, makes no sense. I'm open for the possibility that could happen but I don't think it would succeed. And my best bet is that plane is down in the ocean or in a remote land piece

Police had visited the homes of both pilots on Mar 9th 2014 and spoken with family members, one Mar 15th the captain's flight simulator was disassembled with the help of family members and re-assembled at police premises for further investigation. The last ACARS transmission received was at 01:07L, the next regular ACARS transmission would have occurred at 01:37L 30 minutes later. It is not known when the ACARS system was disabled. Initial investigation identified the first officer was transmitting the last radio call at 01:19L. On Mar 17th 2014 Australia announced that they are going to dedicate substantial forces to coordinate and conduct the search in the sectors of the South Indian Ocean. All Australian agencies are reviewing their data to see whether anything can be determined that might help to locate the aircraft. from AVHerald they are investigating the going to extreme elevation, passing out, stalling out scenario Air France aircraft went to extreme elevation to avoid huge storms outside of Brazil. They got ice in the pitot tube and did not realize the aircrafts speed reading were off. They stalled out, passed out and went into the ocean I think they are asking for these investigators to rule it out however. I haven't seen anything about weather being a factor, and it doesn't explain turning off the transponders

There’s speculation that the plane might have landed somewhere. ... “It’s not evident that it was a suicide mission. Perhaps they have other uses for the plane if it’s a terrorism attack. “Perhaps they’re going to try bargain with the West for the release of some al-Qaeda people in return for releasing the passengers who were on the plane.” He says if it was an act of terrorism, there could be a rogue plane out there. “Once their plane is down somewhere you can repaint it, you can put a different number on the fuselage, and if you replace some of the equipment it won’t give off the identifying signal that it would give off normally. could be another reason for the gov's silence negotiations

Maybe this was from the terrorist/rogue government's perspective, a crime of opportunity-they had this disillusioned pilot dropped in their lap and this was the plane he's flying.

It would mean some of the background on him is bullshit/overblown, but those reports are coming from state-run media run by the state that just jailed their main opposition leader on (possibly fabricated) sodomy charges, you might want to take a grain of salt with all of that.

Also regarding the pasengers putting up a fight when they noticed there was little air-remember that this was 1am local time. Most of the passengers were probably already asleep when the flight's diversion began.

Graffiti on the walls, seats that where somehow slashed with knives, clothing scattered everywhere, and a god-awful stench. Most of the time I can't even get a cup of coffee without lipstick smeared on the rim, and thats when the stewardesses AREN'T cooking whatever it is they think they're cooking back there. Just last week I was coming into SFO through some of the thickest fog I've ever seen. Here I am hoping that theres going to be a runway below me and not a row of houses, and I get a call up front saying that the woman in 23F wants the heat turned down. My suspicion is that the lav on this plane went unflushed one too many times, and between that and the chickens flying around in the cabin, one of the poor pilots just had enough. He took a turn to the west and just kept right on going.

Everytime something can be laden with global warming buzzwords it is. As a for instance, last night they talked about the Permian Extinction as a done deal caused by greenhouse gases and CO2 from burning coal fields in Siberia. There are at least 5 good theories for the Permian Existinction and no one knows which one is correct. A real scientist would acknowledge that. So, this is "science" dumbed down for leftards. Think of Seth MacFarland as Jerry Jones, the owner of the Dallas Cowboys and this Tyson guy as any one of the horrible coaches Jones has hired. I don't know if Malaysia changed their rules on shooting down civilian aircraft that is behaving erratically like we did after 9/11 but at this point it makes as much sense as any other theory. Maybe he wanted to get the transponder shut off so he couldn't be tracked before turning to hit his own country. He thought his country's leadership was corrupt and in league with Israel and the US so why not go after them? al Qaeda has been plotting plane attacks in Malaysia since before 9/11. It's a least a possibility.

Posted by: Citizen X

The first thing is even if they wanted to sell off their treasuries all at once, it would bankrupt them.

Think just for a second; what happens to the price of a commodity if everybody sees you dumping them? The price dives faster than you can sell them. They would end up with a giant hole in their balance sheet.

And more importantly this hole would matter. Why? Because the reason they purchase our bonds is to offset the amount of exports sold every year and keep the yuan low.  Dumping Treasuries all at once would fuck their economy over.

608 I cant believe we have thought of it before Its the Nightmare at 20,000 feet from Twilight Zone, with the Shat! Bob Wilson is a salesman on an airplane who notices a gremlin on the wing of the plane during mid-flight. Bob tries to alert his wife and the flight crew to the gremlin's presence, but every time someone else looks out of the window, the gremlin leaps out of view, so nobody believes Bob's seemingly outlandish claim; his credibility is further marred because this is his first flight since his nervous breakdown six months earlier, which also occurred on a plane. Bob realizes that his wife is starting to think he needs to go back to the sanitarium, but his bigger concern is that, if nothing is done about the gremlin, it will damage the plane and cause it to crash; in fact, the gremlin has already started to tinker with the wiring under one of the engine cowlings. After repeated attempts to warn the crew, Bob grows desperate, steals a sleeping police officer's revolver, and opens the window marked "Auxiliary Exit" to shoot the gremlin, succeeding despite being nearly blown out of the plane himself. Once the plane has landed, everyone believes that he has gone insane. As Bob is whisked away in a straitjacket, he tells his wife that he is alone in his assurance of what happened up there. Rod Serling informs the viewers that Bob's conviction won't be long and the final shot reveals why: the gremlin has left evidence of Bob's story, in the form of the damaged wing.

Calling in debt only works when the entity in debt answers to some authority.

Posted by: jwest at March 17, 2014 01:57 PM (u2a4R)

That's not the way it works.  That situation would only be possible if the instrument in question was a demand note, which U.S. treasury notes are not.  China's only option would be to sell their holdings, but that will not affect the amount of interest paid out by the U.S. Treasury.  If China were to dump all of their treasury holdings all at once they would take a hit on the principal and the people who bought them would get an effectively higher rate because they bought them not at face value but rather at fire sale prices, but the rate paid by the U.S. Treasury would not change at all.

630 53 I'll take you up. It's plausible that the radar contacts west of Malaysia are some other aircraft. The SATCOM being some kind of mistake, less so. The chance of the SATCOM system mistaking one plane for another, or just imagining pings outright, is probably very low. Every plane's SATCOM equipment almost certainly transmits its unique identifier to the satellite system at every ping. (Supposedly the radar contacts are also being verified by cross-checking them with earlier SATCOM pings, but I have no clear idea how reliable that process (or that report) is.) Two other, less conclusive reasons: it's certainly not impossible for the plane to have a transponder-shutting catastrophe just minutes after handover, but it would be a notable coincidence. Also, IIRC they have already searched the vicinity of the transponder shutdown without success (wasn't it the first place they looked?)

631 The thing about depressed people is they can function for a while: go through the motions. Due to the break up of his Family life this pilot had reason to be depressed, and saw it coming for was coming for a while. he's a zombie inside, the outside still seems normal. Then one day an event triggers suicidal actions. The arrest of the opposition leader. Now being a family man and not wanting his family in poverty, he has insurance, but knows that if he is found to be the perpetrator then there is no payout. So he must crash the Aircraft where it is likely to not be found, and without a big debris field. (i.e. mostly intact). So he flies as far as he can from shipping lanes, radars, etc. and after killing all the other passengers/crew. ditches in the ocean, the A/C sinks. He is confident CVR/FDR batteries will die withing 30 days, and no one will spot it. The ditching has one big advantage, It does not make a loud seismic event, like a high speed vertical crash, so detection by underwater listening stations is unlikely.

635 My suspicion is that the lav on this plane went unflushed one too many times, and between that and the chickens flying around in the cabin, one of the poor pilots just had enough. He took a turn to the west and just kept right on going. Posted by: Art Griego at March 17, 2014 01:57 PM

Thanks Art. This was very funny in black humor sort of way. I would imagine being a commercial pilot these days is all kinds of stressful.

A lot of crazies fly these days sometime they are your traveling companions. Your mention unflushed airplane lav brought back a memory.  I was on a flight from Frankfort to Mumbi. The bathrooms an hour into the flight were a mess. There was lines for all of the them. In our group we had our on lunatic who decided to add to the bathroom mayhem by practicing his saxophone in the bathroom. When people figured out what he was doing it unified Muslim, Hindi, Sikh and the Westerners on this flight in their desire to throw him out of the plane. I pretended not to know him for entire the flight.

636 Could be the pilot killed the copilot. Donned an oxygen mask then took the plane up high enough to deprive the passengers of oxygen. From there he had total control of the airplane with no interference. Just a thought.

637 Does anybody remember the hijacking of an Alitalia Boeing 747 with 340 passengers on June 30, 1982? http://tinyurl.com/mnzc5qz Interesting story. I happened to be on business in Colombo at the same time at the very hotel where Mr. Ekanayake checked in and started buying drinks all around. He was quite the local celebrity for a few days until the Sri Lanka government gave in to international pressure to take action against the dude. Check it out.

638 If the plane depressurized would the oxygen masks in the passenger compartment automatically drop or is that managed from the cockpit?

I'm not certain how the oxygen masks deploy.  Looking at the patents, I think the system is mostly a simple mechanism.  I think they would deploy "automatically" by pressure deferrential, thus when the cabin pressure dropped, the door containing the masks would have a increased gradient (1 psi difference is big for a 6"x10" door) pushing the door open.

But whatever the mechanism, it's mostly beside the point.  There is a manual means for opening the compartment (that little square can be pushed in, and then pull the door down).  So a passenger could self deploy the oxygen.  But even if they did, the oxygen supply is measured in minutes.  This plane flew for hours.  The purpose of the emergency oxygen system is to allow time for the pilot to get below 14,000 feet, where most people can breath normally.  Stories differ on MH370:  If the pilot (person at the controls) dropped altitude to avoid radar, then emergency oxygen wasn't necessary.  If the pilot stayed at altitude, depressurized for say 30 minutes, then its not likely the emergency oxygen system was sufficient.

Also note, their are 2 ways of providing emergency oxygen.  Compressed gas, which usually has a method to control within the cockpit, or chemical oxygen generator, which has a very limited duration of effectiveness.
