Food Thread: Special Addition --Beer Thunder-Dome [Beerslinger & CBD]]
— Open Blogger

But first, the news...in beer...

Third world problems are once again plaguing first world countries...

Beer porch.jpg

Although this happens to me every spring, I'm sure the media will blame global warming climate change or ozone depletion.
Climate change already to blame for coming beer inflation...

Apparently this ain't gonna fly....

Now, not that I'd ever sit around in a box with my fishing line stuck down an ice hole, but the FAA slapping this down crushes the entrepreneurial spirit of, well, beer drone delivery. Kind of ruins it for the rest of us too. I mean wouldn't this be the near perfect solution to keeping the drunks off the road?

The FDA ain't helping Beer Thunder-dome either.

My guess here is that they're gonna claim that these spent grains the farmers are buying off breweries, and feeding to their cattle, are the primary cause of the methane in cow farts which deplete our ozone layer.

Prohibition is still kicking and can be seen in such legislation...

And a more in depth article on the three tier system, inane beer distribution laws, and possibly some light on the horizon... (warning, NYT link)

I'm sure that there are some here in the horde that prefer some carcinogens with their grilled steaks, but for those who don't, some happy beer news...

Let's get on with it already....

BEER THUNDER-DOME

Stone enjoy by.jpg

Since I hate the tedious project of pairing beer with food when none comes to mind, food mind you, I will pair it with a great driving song ...and at 9.4%, it might just give you red eyes....props to The War on Drugs....

Have you gotten your hands on this '14 edition of 'Enjoy By' yet? If not, ya better hurry. This beer is not built to last, and that's on purpose, by the brewers. As the name suggests enjoy it by 4.20.14. This is not the beer you buy to stock in the wine cellar, that I trust you've converted into a beer cellar already. An annual imperial IPA, Stone always offers a pack a punch with this annual series. This year's smells incredibly dank but it's flavor simply does not live up to it's aromatic expectations. Still, a solid beer.

This full bodied and malty double IPA won't disappoint. That said, I didn't care for the piney finish. But yes, I'll have another.

'White' - Allagash - Portland, ME

Allagash White.png

A clean, crisp, Belgian wheat beer with coriander spice and citrus. It's got a lemon rind nose to it. One of the better selling micro-brewed White beers out of the states right now.

'WTF' or 'Wilco Tango Foxtrot' - Lagunitas - Petaluma, CA -- A Malty, Robust, Jobless Recovery Ale

This Imperial Brown Ale looks like a tree ring when you pour it into your glass. What a beauty! The bitter in the back sneaks up after the sweet front. Or, as the bottle states, "Great principles don't get lost as they come to light. They're right here. You just have to see them again." I gotta a feelin' I'm gonna see this beer again. Hopefully the same cannot be said about the jobless recovery part.

'The Maharaja' - by Avery - Boulder, CO

maharaja_0311-600-128x500.png

In my humble opinion, this is not a balanced beer. Slightly confusing. Kind of like talking backwards...

Rich backbone, I suspect from the malted barley. It's pungent smell is piney with a grapefruit essence. It claims to be regal, intense, fierce and mighty with its hops and malts, but I think the brewer forgot the additional hops. Not hoppy enough for me to call an IPA, much less an imperial. Only 102 IBU's, (international bitterness units, or hops), which isn't much for an Imperial IPA. Avery makes some great beers, but this one ain't my favorite. Avery's recommends it with shrimp cocktail.

How about jalapeños? Yeah, let's go there. Holy hotness...

'Hot-Jala-Heim' - Horseheads Brewing - NY.

This fine specimen deserves both, a soundtrack and food to pair...

This spicy, herb vegetable beer is brewed with jalapeño and Anaheim peppers. The nose is delectable. Think peppers meet honey. It is so money. Sweet going down and spicy going out on the tongue. The jalapeño is on the back of the bite, kinda hanging out, just to let you know who your hanging out with. The heat is a gentle heat. Go for it. Goes down well with chips and a Mexican white cheese sauce. Yeah, I paired that! That, and a chili releno. You MUST get your drones on this beer.

And, just because...and I'm not saying you gotta get out there and get one, just because...

!Viva La Jesus!

'Even More Jesus' - Evil Twin Brewing - Westbrook Brewing Co, SC

It's hard to keep up with this gypsy brewer from Denmark. For now he brews along the eastern seaboard of the U.S.

evil_twin_big_bottle_0013_even_more_jesus.jpg

This moment in cinematic history deems appropriate for such a beer as 'Even More Jesus'.

Decide for yourself. Freewill.
What's in your glasses?
Adios, el tontos.

8 Gotta tout Stone Breweries (the people who make Arrogant Bastard) Imperial Russian Stout as perhaps the best Stout I've ever had in my life. Fresh from the tap, 64 ounce Growler, kept me occupied and buzzed all night long last week. 10.5%. Another great one, and I usually eschew any "added flavors", was Lagunitas Cappuccino Stout. From a one-liter bottle, great beer, you get the cappuccino flavor in the aftertaste.

9 LOL, when I was stationed in Chicago we used to put our beer on the barracks window ledge outside.  If you left it out for more than a half hour it would freeze and the cans would burst.

Friggen' douchebag obamacockslobberer type. Ruined a great old Burbank dive he took over too. Beer tonight, even if it's a 40 of hi-life. Stone IPAs are tasty too. 12 When I was in Charleston SC last summer, I had a pint of Femme Fatale IPA - some sort of collaboration between Westbrook & Evil Twin. Gotta admit, a beer billed as "gypsy-brewed, limited edition, collaboration" all sounds mighty pretentious. But the beer was fabulous.

26 I still think the FDA rule on grain is an attempt by the big brewers (like InBev) to prevent the smaller brewers (like Boulevard) from being able to recoup some costs and keep price down. The price of craft beer has been coming down. No where near natty light levels, but close enough that they might be poaching market share. Doing what the FDA is doing helps reset that a bit (since I'm guessing large scale brewers already have to dry grain to make it feasible to ship in the quantities they're producing it.)

35 So wife and I went out for happy hour last night. Went with in the following order: Boulevard Wheat Crown Valley Big Bison 312. The first 2 should be self explanatory. The 3rd one is from a microbrewery not far from here, and had I realized it was Crown Valley I'd have passed. I never much cared for their wines and their beer isn't much better. It's technically an Amber ale, but it came out darker (almost brown or Scotch color.) It had a funky maple syrup after taste that did not go down well and hung in the mouth.

79 Been brewing at home. Some craft breweries support the home brewers. recently bottled maple ale, english pale ale and pumpkin beer. In carboys trappist, bock and a nut brown ale. Granny smith hard cider bottled too. Lots of fruit wines- mostly apple with cinnamon and nutmeg, cranapple, vanilla. Black raspberry- rhubarb is amazing. That is a lot of brewing. I want to try my hand at that - at one point I collected about 5 dozen bottles with that end in mind, but I had to move back with my parents due to being unemployed and broke, and had to get rid of them. Dad has his own bottles and has tried homebrewing in the past, but I haven't been able to get him to try again despite his professed interest in doing so. He didn't care the results of his last attempt, so that may be a factor. Do you press your own apples for cider, or do you buy the juice?

80 Remembering when imported Thai Singha bottles were labeled "malt liquor" in the 70s - 80s? Labeled "beer" now. Did they change the brew formula of that import? Oh, flee, hours, flee, is it beer-thirty yet? There is NOBODY at work and I so could probably get away with, oh never mind.

83 Currently wandering about in Gluten Free Hell. Trying to learn to adjust recipes using "flours" that combine either tastelessness or a weird under/after taste with great expense. It's all complicated by allergies to almond, coconut, and amaranth flours, of which at least one are in about 60-70% of GF products. I don't have celiac, thank goodness, just trying to cut down the migraines. As for beer, most of it has gluten.

This morning I found a PBR in the bottom of a cupboard with a date on the can of June 2012.  I was going to throw it out, but you can have it.

HR is here.  She has made one batch of beer, and she hasn't tasted it yet.  She'd kind of like to throw some blueberries or blackberries (probably impossible to get marionberries this far south) in the next one, and she has fond recollections of an Empire Brewing wit made with real lavender so that's second on the list.

Actually, we have frozen the apples cut up, and then cooked them into apple sauce, before adding yeast. The purists object, but 18% wine that is flavorful and sweet goes down really easy. I like dry grape wines but this stuff is very tasty. The orchard was extremely productive this year.

106 That beer description sounds good. I developed a prejudice against wheat beers after moving home from Germany and drinking American versions. Got my vat of pork 'n beans simmering on the stove right now which will last me around two weeks.
